"Let’s start big picture. Can you give us an introduction to White Rock Lake? White Rock Lake is undoubtedly the main park in Dallas, a city that can sometimes feel like more glass and concrete than green. The sprawling park spans more than a thousand acres, with, natch, a lake at its center. The lake is a popular spot for rowing, fishing, and more, while the nine miles of trails encircling it draw cyclists, birdwatchers, runners, and picnickers. When we arrive, where should we go? Head to the site of the old White Rock Municipal Fish Hatchery, at the park's southwest corner. There, you'll find 50 acres of dense woods and one of the best and most secluded spots for bird- and nature-watching. Coyotes, gray foxes, and beavers all make their homes nearby. How easy is it to navigate? A paved trail circles the lake and is punctuated with a few different spots where you can stop and plop down a picnic. So if we're heading to Dallas, why should we plan a stop at White Rock Lake? With its proximity to downtown, a visit to the lake makes sense for anyone who wants to spend some time outdoors or on the water." - Laura Ratliff
