"I'm seeing that Bend, Oregon–born vegan burger restaurant Next Level Burger is expanding to San Francisco with a location inside the Potrero Hill Whole Foods at 450 Rhode Island Street (between Mariposa and 17th Streets), opening August 24; it's the chain's second California spot (there's one in Concord) and one of six locations so far. They serve a variety of vegan burger patties: their “signature” mushroom-and-quinoa patty topped with avocado and vegan “cheddar or swiss style” cheese plus roasted garlic-thyme mayo (egg-free), other patties made with black beans and quinoa or black chia seeds and quinoa, and they also offer Beyond Meat patties — a meat-y, plant-based option that uses red beet juice for a bloody simulacrum and competes with the Impossible Burger; customers can add tempeh “bacon” for extra non-meat flavor. Sides lean healthy with salads, a three-bean chili, and sautéed kale, but there are indulgent options too: crinkle-cut fries cooked in organic sunflower oil, tater tots, and shakes made from soy or coconut soft serve. The new spot will open alongside the Steep Brew beer bar inside the Whole Foods." - Caleb Pershan
