Zum Roten Bären

Restaurant • inner city

"Zum Roten Bären, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. Zum Roten Bären is not one of those old-fashioned ones in the city center, but more a meeting place for young people and families and the ideal spot for a good and proper dinner. They serve typical Austrian cuisine in its finest quality. Zum Roten Bären isn't only a culinary delight, but also visually appealing and the traditional interior creates a welcoming feel. There's also a smoking area inside the restaurant or tables on the pavement - also called Schanigärten, which are typical for Vienna's gastronomy."

Strudlhofstiege

Historical landmark • Alsergrund

"Strudlhofstiege, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. The Strudlhofstiege is one of Vienna's most important Jugendstil - also known as Art Nouveau - buildings. In the center of the stairs there's a split fountain decorated with ornaments. Take the 58 steps and you get within seconds from Strudlhofgasse to Liechtensteinstraße, deeper in the ninth district. Thanks to a novel by Heimito von Doderer, "Die Strudlhofstiege oder Melzer und die Tiefe der Jahre" written in 1951, the stairs became world-famous. As soon as its dark, the place looks somehow Parisian and unbelievably romantic."

Altes Allgemeines Krankenhaus Wien

University • Alsergrund

"Altes AKH, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. This area is usually full of students, because several university departments are located here. Every now and then students' parties are happening outdoor and in December there's a huge, kitschy christmas market. But you can also find a typical Austrian restaurant here: the Stiegl Ambulanz. Highly recommendable is the Wiener Schnitzel and some refreshing beer brewed in Austria."

Altes Allgemeines Krankenhaus Wien

"Paco Tapas, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. Owner Patrick Troger scored a coup with this Spanish Mecca. Paco Tapas serves a finest selection of Iberian wines and aromatic ham imported from the peninsula. The bar, which feels much more like a restaurant, is exquisitely furnished and it's exceptionally interesting to sit at the bar having a great view on the chefs' preparing the tapas not in a hidden kitchen but in front of the guests. Don't miss the wonderful Crema Catalana as dessert!"

Nußdorfer Str. 7

Riva Pizzeria

Pizza restaurant • inner city

"Pizzeria Riva, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. With three locations in Vienna, Pizzeria Riva is sweeping Italy lovers off their feet. The authentic pizza recipe from Naples is a sheer poetry and if that fluffy feast isn't enough to satisfy you, there are fancy cakes and pies - our favorite with almond – made by a gorgeous young baker straight from Italy. Without any question, Pizzeria Riva is the only place to go when you're craving pizza after a wild night out."

Zweigstelle Atelier

Florist • inner city

"Zweigstelle, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. This is Vienna's most pompous florist - and in fact far more than that. Next to exotic flower arrangements you find unique souvenirs and intriguing gift ideas. The great selection and the sophisticated florists are without doubt worth a visit!"

Zweigstelle Atelier

Hannibal

Shop • Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof

"Hannibal, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. The brain behind Hannibal, Kurt Spet, is a self-proclaimed globetrotter and imports a diverse range of goods he discovers when travelling around the world. There are Italian deli foods next to interior accessories from Denmark or knifes produced in France. The selection of tableware by Danish brand Bloomingville is impressive and if you're reaching out for something especially unique, go for "Hannibals Box". You can assemble your very own hamper from over 500 products - there's something to suit every pocket."

Wiener Hofladen

Natural goods store • Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof

Their fresh-baked bread is overwhelming, especially combined with their vast selection of honey, jam, mustard or pastes. Their range of goods also includes fruits and vegetable, milk and dairy products. It's open on Fridays and Saturdays and definitely worth visiting."

Sigmund-Freud Park

Park • inner city

"Sigmund-Freud-Park, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. Next to Vienna's university there's this park which is mostly crowded in summer, when students relocate their activities outdoor. Be there in the late afternoon and watch the sun set behind Votivkirche, which is actually one of the most outstanding neo-Gothic building in the world. Inside there are changing exhibitions and a bunch of pomp. Nevertheless, the area around this sacral masterpiece is full of young people and positive vibes."

Sigmund-Freud Park

Votiv Kino

Movie theater • inner city

"Votivkino, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. The Votivkino is one of Vienna's oldest cinemas presenting art-house films for more than 100 years now. The seating couldn't be comfier and if you're up for some independently produced motion pictures, this is definitely the right place. There are several lovely curated film festivals over the year and it's sister cinema, "De France", is located just around the corner in Vienna's first district."

Votiv Kino

Liechtensteinpark

Park • Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof

"Liechtensteinpark, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. This park is surely one of the most beautiful ones in the city center. The Palais Liechtenstein is an impressive building and when booking a ticket in advance, you can get a guided tour inside. In summer there are a lot of families hanging out and enjoying the sun in this unexpectedly quiet area. The famous Strudlhofstiege is just a stone's throw away."

Der Wiener Deewan

Pakistani restaurant • inner city

"Der Wiener Deewan, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. The concept of Deewan, Vienna's finest Pakistani restaurant, is simple: Excellent cuisine, mostly vegan or vegetarian, meets laid-back atmosphere. And the best: Pay what you want (only drinks got a fixed price). There's a buffet with five different kinds of curry made up of high-quality products and self-ground spices. The interior is simple, but cosy and it feels like you're having dinner at a friend's. So can it be any better?"

Der Wiener Deewan

CoffeePirates

Cafe • Alsergrund

"Coffee Pirates, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. Get in touch with the baristas there, they can tell you loads of stories about coffee and also got some insider tips."

CoffeePirates

Jonas Reindl

Coffee shop • inner city

"Jonas Reindl Coffee, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. Though a guy called "Jonas Reindl" is not existing, this café is especially authentic and charming. Maybe because the owner and his father collected the interior for years now - and some of the pieces are more than 100 years old. Their coffee - try the Aeropress brewed one - is excellent and they even offer coffee by changing guest roasters to guarantee variety. In spring and summer there are some seats outside, but just take your drink to go and find a spot in Sigmund-Freud-Park across the street."

Jonas Reindl

Cafe Francais

French restaurant • inner city

"Café Francais, Alsergrund by Maximilian Mauracher. The French community is rather big in Vienna's ninth district - no wonder, Café Francais is located here. The charming atmosphere and the excellent cuisine are the perfect ingredients for a splendid evening with friends."

Excellent coffee and a relaxed atmosphere, all to be found in a small „3rd wave Coffee Bar.“ The tiny coffee shop was probably intended to be a Take Away shop for the students, despite the simple furnishing the room is so cosy and the mood is so relaxed that mostly every chair is taken. The filter coffee of the “3rd wave coffee bar” is one of the best in Vienna. Of course you can also buy excellent coffee beans, various supplies and get the best and friendliest advice of the owner Robert."
