The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa

"Start us off with an overview. The coastal road between Camps Bay and Llandudno is a conservation area so it’s undeveloped—fynbos-clad mountainside to one side and the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean to the other. You wonder where the hotel is until you round a curve in the road and catch your first glimpse of the hotel, which is named after the Twelve Apostles mountain range that runs parallel to the coast from Camps Bay to Llandudno. Built into the contours of the mountainside, there’s a lot of hotel packed into its relatively small footprint. The imposing white hotel buildings are all above the road - accessed by vehicle via a ramp, which brings you to a carpark and the front entrance. Like all Red Carnation hotels, it’s a grand entrance with a plush, mirrored interior and lots of staff to welcome you. Definitely a soft landing, especially after a long-haul flight—fear not, you’re in experienced hands. Who else is staying there? It's a mix of international visitors from all over the world. Onto the good stuff: Tell us about your room.Initially a little disappointed to be allocated a room facing the mountain, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Quiet and tucked away, I could fling open the sliding door and tune into the fynbos fragrance and pre-dawn chorus of the birds. I’ve heard that the sound of early morning traffic on the coastal road may be disturbing to light sleepers, but the sound of the ocean makes up for it. Sea-facing rooms have views of passing ships, cavorting dolphins and the magnificent sunsets. Flamboyant, old-school glamour best describes the Twelve Apostles’ luxuriously appointed rooms, designed and decorated by the owners, the Tollmans. Although every room’s layout and decoration is slightly different, the overriding effect is riotous pattern (wallpaper and fabrics match), sumptuous layering (throws and cushions galore), elegant mirrors and original art. The bathroom had a roomy tub, large shower, double vanity and very good lighting. Optimal sea views from rooms on the upper floors. Were there other features that impressed you?Enriched with botanical extracts, the in-room toiletries are unique to Red Carnation hotels and available to purchase in the spa. What are the dining options here? There are two restaurants, which is a good thing because the closest restaurants are 15 minutes away by car in Camps Bay. As extravagantly decorated as the guest rooms, Azure’s blue and white interiors would be a great date-night choice—a combo of watching the sun sink below the horizon, excellent cuisine and fabulous wines (try something from the owners’ South African estate, Bouchard Finlayson). Chef Christo Pretorius’s food is predictably good, such as beef fillet drenched in Cafe de Paris butter and a side of crunchy golden fries. His tasting menus (even a vegan version) are a treat, too. Breakfast, included in the rate, is a decadent affair, especially if you enjoy the complimentary freshly shucked oysters and bubbly. The mountain-facing cafe now specializes in sushi and seafood. Afternoon tea is often themed - for example, all things pink in October in aid of breast cancer awareness. The Leopard Bar’s best tables are on the terrace for sundowner cocktails. Anything stand out about other services and features? The award-winning spa, tucked below the hotel, has a loyal local following. There are two swimming pools, and a cute 16-seat cinema (with drinks, popcorn and candy, of course). The hotel runs a complimentary all-day shuttle to the V&A Waterfront, which is about a 20-minute drive away. Bottom line: worth it, and why?On the one hand it’s isolated, on the other it’s beautifully remote. The Red Carnation service and hospitality is impeccable. If you’re planning to visit the Constantia wine route and tour the Cape Peninsula, from Llandudno down to Cape Point and all the way round to Simonstown and Kalk Bay, you’ll be well placed." - Jane Broughton

Cape Town Travel Guide - Vacation & Tourism

"It's hard not to miss this five-star oceanfront property because it's the only building on its stretch of the scenic drive to Chapman's Peak. Each of its 70 rooms has either a sweeping view of the 12 Apostles mountain range or the Atlantic Ocean where it's not uncommon to see seals sunning themselves or whales breaching. Between the adjoining spa and the food and drinks served in the fabled Leopard Bar, guests never even have to venture into town." - Katie Jackson Katie Jackson Katie Jackson is a New York City-based writer who covers travel, food, and more. An Unforgettable Anniversary Stay — One of the Best Hotel Experiences Ever!! We had the most amazing anniversary stay at the 12 Apostles Hotel for the night — quite possibly one of the best hotel experiences I’ve ever had. The weather played ball, was absolutely perfect, and our sea-facing room was sunny and warm in mid winter Cape Town and offered spectacular views of the bay on a pristine, sunny afternoon. From our balcony, we could share a glass of bubbles absorbing the 360 degree views of the shimmering ocean but also the tranquil swimming pool and the 12 Apostles mountains as backdrop — pure magic. The room itself was stunning: beautifully appointed, and decorated, spacious, and incredibly comfortable. My partner, CariAnne, was completely blown away: full kudos , chapeau, credits (not sure that I will be able to lift the bar any higher in future). I’ve stayed in some really good , top hotels — in my previous business life: 12 Apostles easily matched / surpassed those experiences. One of the highlights was the breakfast: a luxurious spread featuring fresh oysters, champagne, smoked salmon, super crispy bacon, and every imaginable accompaniment for a truly indulgent start to the day. What really stood out, though, was the service. The staff were exceptionally attentive and warm, making us feel completely at home throughout our stay. We will definitely be booking again for next year. The 12 Apostles is a rare gem — world-class hospitality in a breathtaking setting.

My bestie and I both had our birthdays in June, so we decided to celebrate it with a weekend away @ 12 Apostles thanks to her son Darryl for arranging the stay. We were met by the friendliest staff; everyone went out of their way to make us welcome and our stay memorable. We had the best fish at Cafe Grill. The Breakfast was outstanding; the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. Especially Henry who came to warm our room and also bought us extra blankets. We loved the Spa and the Movies. Really the best birthday celebration ever...

We just popped in for a drink, was amazing. Upon leaving our car gave problems- Teboho (spelling might be incorrect) and another worker assisted us so kindly and friendly! Was the best service ever making us feel comfortable even ordering us a coffee while we wait. Will definitely be back because it was just so nice. But all the staff are so helpful and friendly !

We had the privilege of doing the high tea at 12 Apostles' Leopard Lounge and we loved it! The service was exceptional, the treats were delicious and the view was absolutely amazing. But what really stood out was the beautiful serenade we received for our birthdays. Very special and highly recommended!

If you're ever heading to Cape Town and want to make some really special memories, I’d absolutely recommend staying at this hotel. I’ve always liked the Red Carnation group , wherever I go, their hotels have that warm, personal touch. It often feels more like visiting someone’s home than staying in a typical hotel. While larger hotels might offer more in terms of choice, this one really focuses on quality. It's a little way from the V&A Waterfront, but they run a free shuttle every hour to both Camps Bay and the Waterfront, which makes things very easy. I stayed for four nights and joined two full-day tours organised through the hotel. Both were excellent. Our guide, Mr Bongani, was fantastic – a knowledgeable and friendly local who made everything run smoothly. We did a Peninsula Tour and a trip to the Winelands, both of which I’d highly recommend. Thanks to his planning, we managed to see quite a lot without feeling rushed. The room was absolutely lovely and kept beautifully, housekeeping came in twice a day and everything was always spotless and thoughtfully arranged. Breakfast was generous, with loads of options, and the hotel has two restaurants and a bar. I had both lunch and dinner there and really enjoyed the food, if you're staying, do make time to dine in.! There are also swimming pools with stunning sunset views, which was a real highlight. When I return to South Africa, I’ll definitely be staying here again , and for longer next time. ❤️

We went for high tea and oh was I delighted the place was beautiful and so was the view. The leopard lounge was stunning and so was our server named Rati. She made sure we were comfortable and that everything was running smoothly. Thank you so much to the staff and management at Twelve Apostles for an amazing experience. I hope to be here soon again

While the location of the 12 Apostles Hotel is undeniably stunning, the overall experience was a major disappointment. The service fell far short of what one would expect from a so-called 5-star establishment. Staff were generally unfriendly and unwelcoming, making the stay feel uncomfortable rather than luxurious. The rooms are dated and clearly in need of maintenance — far from the standard you’d expect at this price point. Sadly, this hotel did not live up to its reputation and was well below average in every respect except for the views.
