Neighbourhood spotlight: Capitol Hill, Seattle - SilverKris

"An independent arts hub centered on flexibility and experimentation, featuring two intimate theatre spaces with moveable seats, drapes and lighting that allow radically different stage configurations so audiences rarely sit in the same room twice; it serves as a creative incubator for local performance and community arts programming." - Megan Hill

Went for next fest NW from Velocity's 2024. I am all for uplifting and enjoying contemporary dance artists. But this is just no my cup of tea.Maybe this is too experimental for me, I'm more used with Meany's Center UW dance spectacles. I felt most of folks were family or friends of the artists and remaining 10% were just too drunk or drugged, finding anything funny. Even the organizer made fun of the last act. Which doesn't show too much faith in the program. It would be really hard to try this place again. But the place and installations seem new, good lighting and sound quality. Staff are really nice.

A very close friend of mine moved to the 12th ave apartments leased by community roots. While visiting, my friend and I were headed out to grab some food and one of their neighbors walked about of his apartment NAKED to go grab his laundry. It was brought to the attention of the leasing lady, and nothing was done. She told me a camera was put up buy one of the neighbors pointing in the direction of my friends apartment (his girl has a protection order so by law (I mean either way, by law) putting up a camera in a public space without the consent or knowledge of all parties is illegal. The leasing lady's response was - "it's not pointed at your door it's pointed in the direction of your door" when I was helping my friend move in there was a sign by the elevator stating that someone stole their dead Dad's blanket from the laundry and would appreciate it back. So other tenants are also stealing laundry from the common area. I'm not a tenant but I often Visit... I recommend you stay away. For your safety and your sanity. And to the owners... GET A NEW LEASING AGENT. THE CURRENT IS NOT DOING HER JOB

The 12th Avenue Arts Center in the heart of Capitol Hill is an excellent venue for living and creating art in the city. It also happened to be perfect for 3D projection mapping! For a Seattle Art Walk a few summers back Lumenarius (then Sensebellum) had the opportunity to activate the facade of the new architecture with custom content created by area artists: Liz Tran, Frank Correa, and Dylan Neuwirth. Each artist employed a scale model of the building to paint, layer, and sculpt with as a template for the material. Come show time and the building came to life with animated murals of light as composed by said artists. Thank you to all involved and may the building shine on with excellent art for all time!

I came here from out of town for Velocity’s dance festival. It was wonderful for the most part. Nice clean spaces/studios. The staff was friendly and accommodating. There are adequate amount of spaces backstage with 3 dressing rooms, a shower, 3 bathrooms, and a green room. ADA compliant. The studio space is a black box while the main stage has risers that fit about 75 chairs. Marley floors in both spaces. The space is conveniently located among many eateries, bars, and shops, so it was fun to wander around in my free time. One concern that I have is that there is NO CHANGING TABLE anywhere in this space. I came with my 1 year old and was struggling to find a private space to change him every time. Management should really look into this!

One of my favorite small theaters in Seattle. I have seen great shows with fantastic acting. Very impressed with Theatre 22 as a company, who performs at this venue often.

Google
Great facility, modern look... Really enjoyed the show

Google
Another shameless exploitation of artists on increasingly artist-hostile Capitol Hill. While they make it appear that this an arts hub, in fact it is 'affordable' housing for anyone (not artists) with a bunch of private eateries and a couple of small theatres. Lame and offensive.#ToneDeaf.

Yelp
I came here on Jan 27 2024 for the Alice in Shadowland show. The facility was beautiful and clean. Staffs were friendly and courteous. Restroom was appreciated. We enjoyed the show very much! Parking in Cap Hill was always a challenge so some of us took the light rail. I found the Seattle University Campus parking lot and just walked from there.

Yelp
I attended a play here on 11/14/18 called White Snake which had an all Asian cast. It was alternating with another play during it's run from mid Oct-mid Nov for ReAct Theatre: Seattle's Multi-ethnic Philanthropic Theatre. The play we saw was in the larger of the two theatres. Very intimate sitting not too big pretty sure everyone in the theatre would have a good view no matter where they sat. The company I work for actually help build the building so it was nice to actually go inside at least this part of the building. Definitely a wonderful venue. The lobby is nice and open and there are plenty of places near to grab a bite before a show.

Yelp
I don't know why this is listed as apartments on here, but it is a wonderful performing arts venue! I have seen everything from circus arts, to plays and musicals here. It is an intimate space with all the necessities - conveniently located restrooms, ample snack selection for intermissions, and bars and restaurants directly adjacent to the front entrance. The big lit sign outside makes it very hard to miss your cue to enter, however parking can be a challenge - after all it is CAP HILL! I usually park on a perpendicular street to 12th a few blocks away and walk over. There are so many businesses along 12th and it is so walkable that I haven't felt unsafe at night in the area. It probably helps that there is a SPD precinct in the area! Anyway, support the local arts and come out here for a show - you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
This is a nice way to see local talent and a good date night. There is a bar and a restaurant in the lobby. There are two stages, the one we were in seats about 40 people. The two person play we saw was very well produced. One of the actors was great, the other was fair. These guys put on a professional production on very few dollars. Worth your support.

Yelp
Location location location! This establishment is centrally located on Capitol Hill, near many excellent restaurants and cool cultural establishments such as Neumos and Elliott Bay Books. An intimate space perfect for seeing performances, I come here every so often for a Strawberry Theatre Workshop production (and then occasionally eat next door at the delicious and seemingly-always-open Dumpling Tzar). For anyone who has been to the previous Strawshop establishment, the 12th Avenue Arts (completed in 2014) could be considered a fancy new upgrade, while retaining the charm and intimacy of the old building. There's still a small cart that offers beer, wine, tea, and the like before the show. The interior stage area where, the action takes place is reconfigured on a per-show basis and has been home to such production greatness as the all-women acted "Frost-Nixon" and brilliant "Proof." Parking, however, is another story... You will probably need to park in front of some poor sap's house a few blocks away to get a remotely reasonable parking space or sell one of your kidneys for a garage parking pass (especially on a weekend).

Yelp
Great venue for watching small plays! They have a bright and open atrium complete with beverages for purchase to take into the theaters. Main stage offers a u shaped seating arrangement. We felt like we were a part of the play given we Cohen reach out and touch the actors (we refrained this time!) can't wait to watch more plays here.

Yelp
Cool venue for watching shows! Just wished the signs to the shows were a bit clearer, got a little lost inside haha. But other than that the theater is in a convenient location next to bars and restaurants, so you could get a quick bite before heading in

Yelp
A unique combination of affordable housing, two performance spaces for theater, dance and music, and restaurants coming soon. Developed by Capitol Hill Housing with the help of many community organizers, 12th Ave Arts is a welcome addition to the hill. Currently, three theater companies are presenting shows in rotation. Check out http://www.blackboxoperations.org for more information. Restaurants are being built, and look to included U:don Noodle Station, Vostok Dumplings and Rachel's Ginger Beer. The building has a large, bright lobby and is well suited to host community events and gatherings. 88 apartment units fill out the top 3 floors. Unfortunately, there is no parking garage, so you'll have to walk, bike, bus or find street parking!
