As a local guide, it is imperative to rate the quality of service received or not received in any neighborhood establishment. This location has zero reason to still be opened and servicing the neighborhood. On Sunday January 14th, 2024, my usual fish market was closed, however I felt like cooking fish for dinner, so I googled for an opened fish market near me, 149th steam fish popped up, at 500 East 149th street in the Bronx NY. It was within walking distance so I went there to buy my seafood supplies. My total purchase was for $58 dollars and change for several different fish and I left. Upon arrival at my home, I checked on the purchase, and I decided to cook the 2 mackerel fish that I brought, I separated the rest in individual bags and stored them in the freezer. I began to clean the mackerel fish by rinsing in water with lime juice and, salt to prepare a brine to add flavors for my dish, upon inspection into the cavity of the fish, I quickly realized the fish was spoiled, the flesh looked like minced meat within the loose skin, needless to say I would be returning to the store for a refund. I called and spoke with the person who sold me the fish, he instructed me to return the fish and he would refund the purchase, upon arrival I handed the fish to the man at the register, the same guy who sold it to me, I also handed him the card used for the purchase along with the receipt. Mind you the fish I purchased were whole they were gutted and descaled before I left the store. He placed the gutted fish on the scale and told me he would return $6.00 for the 2 fish I brought an hour before for $12.00. he claimed he isn't supposed to accept returns and so therefore no refund for the same amount can be dispersed. I blew up with rage and refused to accept his rhetoric. I reminded him that I walked into the store to buy fresh fish that I could consume, after consulting with his coworkers, he handed me cash in the amount of $12.00 for my full refund for the mackerel however he kept my card and refused to return it claiming that I never gave it to him. People were eating as this was going on, I proceeded to clarify what was going on by telling them they could get sick in this establishment by eating seafood that could cause chaos to their health. This establishment is a dangerous place to do business, I do not recommend this establishment for your steamed seafood, or to purchase anything else they sell that can be safely consumed at home . Please refrain from exposing your lives to foods that can kill you. I will also make a report to the department of health to investigate the process they use to store seafood to serve or sell to the public. Our neighborhood must be respected, we are people too. Anyone wishing to conduct business in our neighborhoods must show respect, and the utmost care and dignity. We the people must protect each other. steer clear of 149th St steam fish located at 500 East 149th Street in the Bronx NY, Their supply of seafood is not fresh, not safe for consumption, furthermore the block is filthy and store owners do not bother to sweep prior to opening for business. You wait...but GOOD things come to those who wait! The food is tasty and the place is clean. The plates are piled up with fries,onion rings or the steamed veggies you choose. Great selection,steamed or fried...and enough for two to share. Oh and you can buy fish to cook yourself at home.

I come here all the time since they first opened. Love the fish soup! I must say I miss the older Asian couple that used to own it. Idk if it’s new owners but a lot has changed since they left. Seems like less portions for the food. And also, I think the seafood should come with at least ONE side. But it’s clean the staff are friendly and the seafood is always delicious.

Friendly customer service, the food was pretty good. Just wish the veggie was steam up alil more. But overall I enjoyed my shrimp, I'll definitely be coming back.

This place was cool. You come in and on one side they have the veggies, and fresh fish to choose, and the other side is where they have a counter where you can buy the food to fry. Also some other variety. Then they have the front counter where you pay and put your order in if you want the food steam, or grilled, maybe on the grilled part because I got mines steamed. Then I also put in an order to get some things fried, they do have a menu for both counters, like some combos, you get a number any counter you order from, but you pay at one. So I had two numbers that I didnt like because my fried food was done before my steamed, making my fried food get cold faster. Overall, I do like the place but I prefer to have my crabs from seafood restaurants beacause the sauce is everthing and here you get seasonings and butter, still good but you get the point. They also have a really good seating area if you choose to sit and eat, that alone is a plus for me, but remember its not a five star dining restaurant, so be aware if someone just walkes in and askes you for money, or something to eat.

I was driving through the Bronx on a mission for a good healthy spot to eat. I spotted this location on the 149th street strip and went in. Despite the surround shops and neighborhood, this was a delicious place to have steam seafood. You can choose grilled and fried also. The vegetables and rice are really good. If you do not like a lot of butter, you will have to tell them to lighten up on it. It was fresh and seasoned well. I enjoyed it.

Wow a Gem! I loveeee seafood so when my partner told me about this place I was so geeked! I live in the neighborhood so I alway passed by this place; so glad we stopped in! Nice sized restaurant with plenty seating. Friendly staff(the sweet lady at the cashier was lovely) she was very patient while we scanned the vast selection of a menu they provided. Affordable for what I ordered: King Crab with Shrimp Steamed platter, Fried Whiting,Shrimp and Chips. Freshly cleaned and well seasoned deliciousness came right at me! A cute shake of lemon and hella butter. I was in heaven. I'm coming back for the Green Lipped Mussels darling! Did I mention that the place is CLEAN! No rotted fish smell, clean tables,floors and counters. That's rare ya know. Overall, come get some good ass grub. PERIODT

I stop at this fish market frequently for their steamed fish. The staff is always friendly, helpful and pleasant. There store also doesn't smell fishy and unpleasant like the fish market near prospect ave. (Fresh fish shouldn't smell fishy). They offer a large variety of sides that you can have steamed along with your fish choice. There's a salad section where you can make your own salads as well. Also, there are a few seasoning options that you can choose from as well unlike a lot of other fish markets in the same area. You can also opt to have your fish fried or grilled instead of steamed. Last but not least they offer fish soup as well. I highly recommend this fish market.

Came here previously just to purchase crab legs for a fish fry event I was having; but today I came by to get cooked food since light house was too far. This will now be my go to place for cooked seafood when I don't want to make the trip to Harlem. I like the order system they asked you how you want it cooked and seasoned, sad that they dont offer the do it yourself season station. Overall the food was delicious fresh and plentiful; Location is a plus close to home for me. The fried snapper wasn't crispy enough for me next time I'll get lobster & shrimp as well.

I like this spot. Fresh steamed seafood and veggies, very healthy. Just wish it wasn't so pricey. You can purchase your seafood choices and pay by the pound. The veggies have a set price. It all gets seasoned to perfection and served in a platter within 20 minutes. Always purchase your food to go, very limited seating, its rare to catch a good seat here. In conclusion, I still love the steamed lobster tails, shrimps, crab legs, and tilapia with all the vegetarian condiments.

As others have said, it don't have the fishy smell of many fish market and the quality of the raw fish for sale seems high. Visible prep areas seemed clean. I wanted a cooked meal, and the steamed catfish and veggie plate (#6) was generous and tasty. Seasoning is basic but satisfactory; don't expect anything fancy. The food took a while to prepare, so call at least 15 minutes ahead for pick-up. Unless you are homeless, it is not the kinda place to wait around or have a sit-down meal if you can avoid it. The place was quite chilly during my October visit and the ragged chairs and placement of the tables between the open raw fish cooler and the breaded seafood case is not an inviting set-up.

Ordered the side order of fried shrimp. The side order came with 10 medium shrimp coated in panko breadcrumbs and what seem to be ole bay. I really wanted to like this place however the shrimps were overdone and tasted heavily of old oil. The staff however are very friendly and the place is very clean and does not smell terribly of fish like other fish markets. One star for friendly staff One star for cleanliness

as this virus still continues customers in the store not wearing masks coughing while waiting on the line and no one that works in the store inforcing anything i walked right back out.

Ive worked in the Bronx for several years and I cant believe I didnt discover this place sooner. Ive walked past several times but never gave it a second look. There is a wide array of various types of fish ranging from sea bass to catfish to mussels to crablegs. In the fridge are various sides such as corn, potatoes, brocolli...all the great fixins that one would require in a steam pot. You just pick whatever you want and put it in your bucket. For those who dont feel like picking out their own seafood you have the option of choosing from a menu of platter options. On the other side of the restaurant is food already prepared that just needs to be heated.. I was so amazed at how cheap my food was. A got a whole tilapia, a quarter pound of squid, and all my fixins and everything only came up to $10.00. You can add any seasoning you want with extra anything for no additional fee. Talk about a great deal. The prices are so reasonable compared to other steamed seafood establishments that ive visited. I am definitely going to be a regular. I dont like going to the Bronx however I think this place is worth a trip across the Triboro.

This place over priced the food is NASTY ordered food it came to 100 dollars I paid cash mind you no EBT !!! the broccoli wasn't cook neither was the cabbage or corn Nasty Nasty Nasty the lady at the front also has a nasty attitude they horrible and the food is disgusting don't go here if u want real good seafood !!!!Go to Kim's Fish Market the best !!!!

My fave seafood place in the neighboorhood. Fish is fresh and deliious. Service is great. Restaurant is clean and bright. Definitely worth a visit.

i always drop by before n let them grill the salmon ,now they want to charge extra $5for grilling.the service are slow now not like before they always talking ..i would not recommend to anybody u have a long wait.
