3.5 stars. Last month, 16 Handles opened a new location in the heart of Times Square. Today, I finally got the chance to stop by and try them out. I was super excited since this is only my 2nd time trying 16 Handles, with the first time being several years ago. Like most 16 Handles stores, this location is fairly small, but it does have a second floor with a nice seating area.
This location looked very neat and clean, as expected from a new store. Positioned by the entrance is the toppings bar. All of the toppings (cereal, cookies, candies, and gummy bears, just to name a few) looked fresh and neatly displayed. Towards the back of the store were the machines for the soft serves, which included the ice creams, frozen yogurts, and sorbets. There is even a large fridge in the back with pre-packaged items (ice cream cakes, soft serve sandwiches and pre-packed pints) to grab and go.
I must say that I was surprised to find that the toppings bar was completely open, and customers were allowed to self-serve. For some reason, I was expecting the items to be more contained and for the staff to do the serving. I knew that a lot of places have relaxed some of their covid protocols, but I was still taken aback by this. So much so that I changed my mind about ordering frozen yogurt and instead got a smoothie, knowing that the staff would have to make it behind the counter (and away from the open toppings bar). I ordered the Acai Elixir, which had acai, strawberries, blueberries and, of course, fro-yo. The smoothie was refreshing and was not too sweet but at nine bucks a cup, it was a bit steep.
Tip: at this location, as part of their covid protocols, they currently do not allow for sample tastings.
