I had lunch at S&P a week or so ago when I was in NYC for a spontaneous solo Labor Day weekend. The banners and signs that say things like "Under one name or another since 1929" and "Continuing fine quality since 1929" tell the story of this restaurant. It's been open since 1929 with some changes in ownership and name (it was called S&P before it was Eisenberg's and now it's back to S&P) during its long history. You have to love a place that has their history on their menu.
But the changes in ownership haven't it changed too much. It still has so much character. When I walked in around 11 am on a Saturday, it was definitely busy. But one of the reasons solo travel is great? You can take that one spot left at the bar! So I got seated at the bar right away (the wait for tables was not long). The service is fantastic, and I had happily ordered and pulled out my book to read within a couple of minutes.
S&P's menu is as classic as the decor. More. For breakfast? So many choices! Lox, eggs, and onions. Scrambled eggs with pastrami (the Lil' Shonda). Matzo Brei... Not feeling breakfast? Classic sandwiches - pastrami, corned beef, tuna melt, corned beef and chopped liver, egg salad, roast turkey... Or maybe you want a burger? Or some classic Jewish deli dishes like kreplach, potato knish, matzo ball soup, kasha varnishkes, borscht, latkes, chopped liver...? So much to choose from! I mean you just know a place is old school and legit when they have melon with cottage cheese, banana and sour cream, and chilled half grapefruit on the menu, right?!
On my first visit to S&P last week, I could not pass up the chopped olives and cream cheese salad and a vanilla egg cream. So simple and so delicious. Just a great lunch. I can't wait to go back and try more. Just a classic. History, great service, great food, and egg creams and other classic fountain drinks!? Just a fantastic spot. Can't wait to go back.
