Yelp
Old school diner vibes in the old school flat iron district. There was a bit of a wait, but I was seated quickly as a solo dinner at the long counter. Pretty big menu, but I feel like the pastrami or corned beef are necessities. Potato Latkes: Much more exciting than diner fries. It's crispy all around with a little softness in the middle. Goes great the obligatory sour cream and apple sauce on the side. Really love that this is so common here and not a special occasion. The S&P Regular: We've all been brainwashed into having pastrami on rye with mustard! This was eye opening and deprogrammed my world. The pastrami was thick and full of so much flavor. Very meaty! No rye here, but rather a soft white roll that seemed freshly baked (not from a bag pumped with preservatives). And wow, true game changer were all those finely chopped cherry peppers mixed with Russian dressing. I like spicy food and this gave a very satisfying tang. It was just perfect again the rich and fatty pastrami brisket.

Yelp
This was our second attempt to come here as the first time the line was super long. We did wait a little bit but luckily seemed to beat the line that was present when we left. Grabbed counter seats which I actually preferred to the seats in the back. - Tuna melt: I quite enjoyed this, more than I thought I would. Sure the cheese could have been melted a bit more but the bread was perfectly crisp and I enjoyed the tuna. - Pastrami reuben: I mean the pastrami was fine and the bread again was good. Not my favorite reuben pretty standard. - Split pea soup: Enjoyed the flavoring and the texture of this. - Fries: These were a total miss. I wasn't expecting them to be in the shape of a chip instead of a normal French fry and they weren't as crispy as I would have wanted. The pickles were a nice (expected) addition to the dishes but could have been a bit crisper. Service was great and attentive. While glad we tried it not sure I would necessarily wait when the line is as long as I've seen it get.

Yelp
{Overall: 4.5; Food: 5} Ambiance: 3.5; Service: 3.5 At S&P, the best items on the menu are the sandwiches. The Flatiron Delight reuben is a stand out, and probably the best reuben I've had in NYC. The bread was fresh and soft, the corned beef was tender, and the Coleslaw and Russian dressing turned it into a rich, decadent experience. A lot of the iconic Rubens in New York City consist of a pile of dry meat on slices of dry bread. What S&P is serving is lightyears away from those outdated versions. They have other great diner sandwiches like tuna melts and chicken salad sandwiches. The Kasha varnishkes (buckwheat groats with noodles) was also surprisingly delightful - comforting and salty. S&P maintains the ambiance of Eisenberg's, an old-school deli, that occupied the space before them. It's more of a practical dining experience - several seats at the counter with a few crowded tables in the back. On the weekend, the lines can get very long, so try to sneak in a weekday lunch if you can.

Yelp
Stopped in around 1pm on a Tuesday. 1/2 block from the Harry Potter store. A short 10 minute wait to be seated. Hands down, best Reuben I have ever had.

Yelp
So, I was visiting NYC and really wanted a pastrami reuben! I found this spot and instantly loved the old school diner vibes. I went around 11am, before the lunch rush, and thankfully there were seats at the counter. I also had the matzo ball soup and some fries and omg, the best reuben i've ever had! :D I'll have to come back and try some other sandwiches.

Yelp
Whenever I visit NYC, this diner is a must stop at least once. Walking into this place feels like going back in time. It should, seeing as it has history dating back to 1928! The inside feels like an old school counter service lunch room with decor to match. The staff is always friendly and efficient. The food is classic NYC diner fare complete with pastrami and egg breakfast sandwiches, latkes, burger, deli and hot sandwiches, soda fountain style drinks and desserts and more. Highlights are the Lil' Shonda breakfast sandwich, the Dinkelburger, and the pancakes (sweet and tangy). I've also heard people love their tuna salad sandwich but I have not had it yet. Overall, an amazing diner and a NYC staple.

Yelp
This small diner is old school with friendly service. The pastrami scrambled eggs are very flavorful and the round cut french fries were hot, crispy and delicious. The Ruben was good but I don't usually like the meat cut so thickly, if you do enjoy thick cut meat you will enjoy this sandwich.

Yelp
We had the tuna melt and the patty melt, both were good sandwiches. The fries were definitely unique and looked like chips Customer service was great and felt like a New York Diner

Yelp
Wanted to try S&P now for a year or so and finally had the opportunity. It was a short walk from midtown south on 5th and I avoided the noon lunchtime crowd arriving 1:45pm and was able to sit at the counter. A server came over immediately with a menu and a water. I wanted to sample a fresh made deli sandwich so I selected the corn beef sandwich. The corn beef was moist and very tasty served on rye bread with a dill kosher pickle and counter side was spicy mustard. I ate the entire sandwich and it was very good. It's not stacked with thinly sliced corn beef like other Deli's. This corn beef was sliced thicker. It did not take away at all from the texture or taste, only the appearance. Personally, I think there could have been more corn beef on the sandwich. No drink, only water, plus $20 including tip. I'll try another sandwich next time as the prepared plates going to others on the counter looked really good! Enjoy!

Yelp
On a Thursday for lunch I traveled into the city and did some research on where to go for a lunch bite. S&P was one that kept ringing out wherever I looked. I set out and was able to take the subway and walk up around 11:45AM. As a party of one, I just sat right down at the counter. There is seating in the back of the place as well, so if there is a line along the wall when you walk in don't be discouraged, observing things it looks like a lot of time it's just a log jam at the front with people paying out and waiting for tables. I ordered a Flatiron Turkey Sandwich, which comes with slaw and on rye. I also added an order of fries and a diet vanilla cola. This is an old style soda jerk place, so the cola you can watch them make it while sitting at the counter. The sandwich was very good - plenty of Russian dressing, a hefty amount of turkey, and just a solid sandwich. The fries, as you can see - are not long and thin but more like a thicccer potato chip cut. Can be loud, but I would recommend lunch here.

Yelp
This sandwich shop I absolutely enjoyed from the classic diner counter and vibrant bustling of conversations while savouring each bite of my sandwich paired with a coffee to start my morning, during my lunch break, or unwind after a long day of work. When you first enter, you are welcomed with lively conversations and plates moving around the diner counter. I ordered two classic sandwiches, which were the Pastrami on Rye and Tuna Melt. What I liked about these sandwiches were the portion sizes and how filling it was. The Pastrami on Rye had the right amount of pastrami and mustard that wasn't overwhelming while eating or trying to finish it. The Tuna Melt was the ideal comfort sandwich that was warm and toasty, especially when taking that first bite that was crisp yet soft. I personally love sitting on the diner counter and watching the preparation of orders coming back and forth. If you wish to sit on the diner counter, there is a bit of a waiting period, but there are additional seating options further back in the sandwich shop. This sandwich shop is near the Flatiron Building and Madison Square Park, which makes it a destination for foodies and tourists or just a place to stumble across while walking the neighborhood

Yelp
Ughhhhh the corned beef and Rugelach are enough to make me pack my bags and move from California to New York. Plus they have real cherry cokes. If you know you know.

Yelp
On a recent trip to NYC I really wanted to check out S&P and I am so glad we did. There was a short wait around 1 pm on a Monday. We got counter seats and ordered from the person behind the counter. We ordered a tuna melt (added tomato), Pastrami Reuben, and fries. Both sandwiches were great and the highlight of the meal was the pastrami reuben. Wow! Fries could have been a little crisper but overall they too were good and I liked that were weren't super salty. You pay at the front with the cashier and its honor based- you tell them what you had and they charge you for that.

Yelp
This is exactly what I expect from an old-school Jewish deli experience in the heart of NYC. The space is small and crowded. The menu is extensive. The service is brusk. We sat at the counter to be able to eat faster. I had a hard time choosing my meal because I was so hungry and everything sounded good. I settled on the turkey club and was not disappointed. Their coffee is surprisingly good for a deli.

Yelp
Stopped by randomly walking around in the area and glad I did. Didn't know how popular it was and somehow went in during off peak hours. Very old school deli/diner. Sat down quickly, food came fast. No frills, just good food and vibes. One of the best Reubens I've had and would definitely would come back if I'm in the area.

Yelp
This place earns complete approval. Their dishes are never one-dimensional. The cost makes more sense when shared. Employees here showed good manners and I felt absolutely pleased. I'll make a point to return.

Yelp
I haven't been since the takeover - thank heavens it is the same! Fun counter service and real diner vibes. The famous tuna melt remains the gold standard y which all others are judged. I asked for new pickles and got them- which is rare at delis these days. I saw the pastrami sandwiches and I must go back and try. The egg cream was good as well.

Yelp
TDLR: food is a combo between Jewish deli and classic diner but expensive. My fiancé and I were so excited to try this place after all the hype we've seen on social media. The ambiance is a classic old school diner right off 5th Ave. Highlights: matzo ball soup, knish, pastrami Reuben and chopped liver. Their tuna melt was also good but nothing special and especially for $17, I expected a little more than American cheese and tuna. Their burger was honestly a miss - it was more bread, tomato and lettuce than meat and the patty didn't have much flavor. The service was quick and efficient even though there weren't that many servers. I would come back to try the pastrami Reuben with chopped liver though!
google avatar

Yelp
Food (4/5): We ordered the matso ball soup, S&P burger, Reuben, onion rings, and fries. The matso ball soup had a spongy texture and didn't have a thick flavor. The fries and burger were decent though. Service (5/5): Service was fast with them taking our order quickly and getting the food out quickly. They refilled our water reasonably frequently. Ambiance (4/5): Place feels like an O.G. classic sandwich shop. There is bar type seating and then seats in the back. There's only one restroom. There's also holiday decor when we came in January. Overall reasonably nice.

Yelp
Took a long time for three of us to be seated, but well worth it. Cute diner style place with food that's way better than most good delis. My boyfriend and I split a hot Reuben sandwich with corned beef and fries. So so so good that I've been craving it days after. Our friend got pea soup and latkes. He was very happy. Can't wait to go back! Excellent staff!

Yelp
It's a nice friendly place with some tables in the back and a bustling counter with really tight seating and well prepared comfort food. I should have had the soup instead of the corned beef and chopped liver on rye with Russian. The corned beef was simply prepared but the chopped liver was strained as if through a sieve. No matter, the sandwich was tasty but next time I'll get their homemade soup. That split pea looked sumptuous.

Yelp
I stopped into S&P for lunch on a whim and I'm so glad I did! This place is a throwback in the best possible way. I sat at the counter and didn't have to wait but when I left there was a long line of people waiting to be seated. Ordered: Matzo ball soup ($10)- the matzo ball was fluffy and the soup not salty (you can add your own). It had a few carrots in the broth and was natural and delicious. The perfect way to warm up on a cold day. Corned beef sandwich ($18)- the sandwich was a nice size but not massive like you'll find at some other delis. The price is more reasonable too so this was good with me! The rye bread was fresh and the corned beef warm. It came with a pickle. The corned beef wasn't extra lean but this didn't bother me because it was flavorful. I'd order this again. I look forward to returning to S&P again soon to try other things on the menu!

Yelp
Food amazing Service amazing Location fantastic Cleanliness good Wait time 10 min at lunch time

Yelp
This Jewish deli/diner is one of the best in the city if not the best. It has that old school feel to it where bar counters are first come first serve and there are tables in the back. I highly recommend to try at least sides/sandwiches/soups. The fries and onion rings are also very good. You pay at the end towards the entrance by telling the people what you ordered, this is not wait for the check kinda place.

Yelp
I had lunch at S&P a week or so ago when I was in NYC for a spontaneous solo Labor Day weekend. The banners and signs that say things like "Under one name or another since 1929" and "Continuing fine quality since 1929" tell the story of this restaurant. It's been open since 1929 with some changes in ownership and name (it was called S&P before it was Eisenberg's and now it's back to S&P) during its long history. You have to love a place that has their history on their menu. But the changes in ownership haven't it changed too much. It still has so much character. When I walked in around 11 am on a Saturday, it was definitely busy. But one of the reasons solo travel is great? You can take that one spot left at the bar! So I got seated at the bar right away (the wait for tables was not long). The service is fantastic, and I had happily ordered and pulled out my book to read within a couple of minutes. S&P's menu is as classic as the decor. More. For breakfast? So many choices! Lox, eggs, and onions. Scrambled eggs with pastrami (the Lil' Shonda). Matzo Brei... Not feeling breakfast? Classic sandwiches - pastrami, corned beef, tuna melt, corned beef and chopped liver, egg salad, roast turkey... Or maybe you want a burger? Or some classic Jewish deli dishes like kreplach, potato knish, matzo ball soup, kasha varnishkes, borscht, latkes, chopped liver...? So much to choose from! I mean you just know a place is old school and legit when they have melon with cottage cheese, banana and sour cream, and chilled half grapefruit on the menu, right?! On my first visit to S&P last week, I could not pass up the chopped olives and cream cheese salad and a vanilla egg cream. So simple and so delicious. Just a great lunch. I can't wait to go back and try more. Just a classic. History, great service, great food, and egg creams and other classic fountain drinks!? Just a fantastic spot. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my meal at S&P. Staff was kind and service was fast. Ambiance is that of an old school diner, comfortable and friendly. Food: the tuna melt was good and the serving was generous. I do wish however that the cheese wasn't kraft singles, for $17 I would hope for higher quality cheese. It was a good sandwich nonetheless 4/5. The pastrami on rye was phenomenal. The quality of the meat can be tasted in every bite. Simple, to the point, not much you can mess up on this kind of sandwich. While I do wish the pastrami serving was larger like other restaurants (Katz), the lower price point and staple sandwich gets the job done especially for the comparatively lower price. 4.5/5

Yelp
This feels like a classic New York spot from the moment you walk in. Old lady at the cash register, long retro bar, and quick service. The sandwich was really good, I don't know why I expected it to be worse but it really surprised me. I do think it was a little pricier than it should have been but that's the only thing that was in the way of a 5 star rating. I got the Reuben with pastrami and sauerkraut on the side. So good

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful service! The Flatiron Delight sandwich was delicious and decadent. Great old school diner vibe.

Yelp
Was visiting NYC on a work trip and came across this place while looking for counter seating at a diner nearby. What a gem!!! Upon doing some research on my way over, I immediately knew I needed to try their famous tuna melt. As soon as I placed my order, the waitstaff behind the counter delivered the crispiest raspberry lime rickey to quench my thirst, thus setting up what was to be an excellent meal. The tuna melt was the perfect ratio of tuna and melted American cheese and I almost had to order another!! Alas, I returned the very next day to again try another all-star sandwich on their menu: the patty melt. This next sandwich was a strong follow-up to my first visit the day prior and, albeit being a bit messy, satisfied my craving for classic diner food during my lunch break. Ultimately, I cannot wait to return to NYC and revisit this amazing spot.

Yelp
Such a delicious and simple tuna melt. One of the best I've ever had hands down. The crispy bread with the piping hot tuna and cheese.. chefs kiss! Staff was super friendly too and brought out bread that would make me feel safe! Woohoo!

Yelp
An old-school diner. I waited for about 30 mins for Saturday lunch. I think I got lucky because the queue was much longer when I left. The food is very affordable! But vegetarian options are very limited. Once you get a seat, the service is quick. I ended up having an egg salad sandwich as a main and potato latkes as a side. The egg salad sandwich was very, very average. I mean it's egg and mayo in standard white breads. I can make a much better egg salad sandwich. The potato latkes were good. Loved the crunch.
google avatar

Aimee H.

Yelp
You can skip the line and order at the cash register if you want takeout! My order was ready in about 15 minutes :) I got the matzah ball soup and it was perfectly savory and comforting. But the real star of the show was the corned beef and liver sandwich. I was blown away by how tender the beef was and the generous amount of liver spread they put on the sandwich. And im a big liver fan so this was one of the best sandwiches ive ever had. Havent tried Katz yet so not sure how they compare but the prices are cheaper here for sure so i will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Just enjoyed a wonderful & nostalgic visit to the 70s and brought my 20 yr old son for the Time Machine trip! I ordered the S&P Regular on REAL rye bread (pastrami, cherry peppers & Russian dressing) with a chocolate egg cream. The pastrami was lean & thick cut. The balance of the salty pastrami with the sweet Russian dressing & the slight bite & heat of the peppers was simply magnificent. The egg cream was made as I remembered too. My son had the corned beef on rye with old school spicy brown mustard with a chocolate shake and a side of latkes. Damn those latkes were SO DELICIOUS! Traditional & hand made and seasoned perfectly served with sour cream & apple sauce. Just outstanding! The majority of the restaurant is red pleather barstool counter seating with a few tables in the rear and the decor is EXACTLY as it should be...black marble countertop with white veins, stainless steel backsplash & grill station visible to all. White globe lanterns high overhead and a staff that smiles and cares. If you like Katz's without lines & tourists...S&P is it!!!

Yelp
We didn't wanna spend $30 on a pastrami sandwich so I did a bit of searching for a good spot that has pastrami and hot dogs. This is a fast paced, hustle and bustle, in and out, kind of diner. We were seated at the counter facing the cook and the grill. So I took a short video of him in action! Lots of people standing in line to get into this place. But it moves quickly! I think it took us 10 minutes to get our seats. My bf only wanted a pastrami on rye though I think the griddle sandwich would have been a better choice. I chose the chili dog since we didn't have a hot dog throughout our trip! What's a trip to NYC without trying their hot dogs and pastrami?? So here we are! PLATTSBURGH - Basically a chili dog. It was bursting with all kinds of flavors from the chili, mustard, and onions! I like how the bread is lightly toasted too. Though, there wasn't anything special about the hot dog but it was very tasty! 4/5 PASTRAMI ON RYE - I guess it's a NY thing to not toast the bread when having a pastrami sandwich unless it's on the griddle. Not many slices of pastrami, but it was tender and fatty unlike the packaged pastrami you get at a supermarket. I enjoyed the meat though you only get a few pieces. That's why the price tag on this is about 1/2 of Katz! If you're not wanting a mound of pastrami, this is the place to go! Won't cost you an arm and a leg! And you get to try very good pastrami. Though I feel a few more pieces of pastrami would have been a solid sandwich for the price paid. 3.5/5 If I'm ever back in NY, I'd definitely would get a griddle sandwich! I'll keep S&P in my bookmarks!

Yelp
Best pastrami Reuben I've ever had! The women at the counter suggested the Pastrami versus the Corned Beef, which was obviously the best choice.

Yelp
*New favorite diner has been added to the list* This was another online find but I'm SO glad I tried it. It definitely lived up to its reputation online. This tuna melt is the pinnacle of a classic tuna melt sandwich. (This and the Golden Diner tuna melt are top 2 in the city hands down.) The latkes were absolutely perfect and I love their chip style fries. I've never had these before and they were DELICIOUS. Possibly my new favorite style of fry as they are perfect for scooping. You might have to wait in a small line but it's totally worth it. Service is standard. Interior has a long diner style stool seating with a few tables in the back. Definitely a classic joint. 4.9/5

Yelp
Awesome old school counter, stopped in for a tuna melt and it was amazing. Perfect texture on the rye bread, melty cheese, tuna salad, filling and delicious served with a pickle spear. Head inside, take a seat, pay at the counter when done.
google avatar

Yelp
Giving S&P Lunch 5 stars for the hot dogs alone - they were easily the best hot dogs I had in a long time (or ever haha). The buns were toasted to perfection, the dogs themselves were cooked perfectly, and the toppings (sauerkraut and mustard) really elevated the hot dogs. Also absolutely loved the classic counter top experience - I feel like I don't see much of that anymore in Manhattan. Will definitely come back again to try their impressive arrays of sandwiches and their patty melt!
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
this place is always packed at lunchtime and for good reason. I got the pastrami reuben and matzo ball soup and both were amazing - the pastrami melted in my mouth. Staff are very friendly and attentive but do expect a wait to be seated and for your order to come.
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Amazing deli experience. The food is simple and effective. The vibes are classic and casual. The wait staff was quick and friendly. The tuna melt was worth the hype, can't wait to come back and try more of the classics they serve up.

Yelp
I went there for their new pop up "A Place Called Pancake" and it was awesome. The service, the vibe and the food were all outstanding. It's a small place, but it's def worth going for either the pop up or just in general. The pop up has really cool cocktails and I 100% suggest the Swing Set.
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
Wholesome diner fare, served with a smile. Food - Truly satisfying! The pancakes I had were hearty and buttery, the way I like them. My wife was impressed by the onion rings, ranking them among the best she's ever tasted. I'm eager to return for the club sandwich. Ambiance - It's a straightforward diner that's unpretentious and relaxed. Service - Quick and amiable, a perfect score from us.
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
Great diner vibes, menu is not over complicated and everything has some great meat options. On a Sunday morning at 9:15 we were seated right away, but it definitely started it full up when we were leaving. I got the corn beef hash, which I was told was homemade - it was giving canned consistency but tasted like the real deal so it was so good!!

Bill B.

Yelp
Great old timey spot had the Billy Joel perfect! Service was excellent and fast too Wait was only about 10 minutes
google avatar

Dan K.

Yelp
S&P is now part of my culinary tour every time I come to NY. Borscht, S&P Regular (pastrami, cherry peppers, Russian dressing), egg cream - they have all the great Jewish deli classics and the world is better because of it.
google avatar

Daphne L.

Yelp
Old school diner feel with friendly staff! Ordered a corned beef on rye to go- thicker cut than I get elsewhere but super moist and melted in my mouth- almost deliciousness! Also got a scoop of chopped liver! The $8 portion was generous and very creamy- I had opted for no crackers but regretted that choice once I realized how large much they served me. Loved every bite

Yelp
Nice service tasty pastrami Reuben if a bit chewy my cousin had the tuna melt, which is very nice

Yelp
Charming little sandwich shop that gives you an old school vibe that isn't common these days. Got a turkey ruben that filled me up for hours.
