We went here for lunch for the first time today. My husband and I enjoyed the homey and historic feel to the restaurant. The food was delicious! I had the salmon and my husband had the chicken. Well seasoned food and very tender meat and fish. The espresso martini was excellent as well. We also enjoyed the tiramisu and the white chocolate creme brulee! Two of my favorites both on the menu along with my favorite cocktail. A recipe for a winning combination. We can't wait to come by on a music night to check out the rest of it. Thank you for a wonderful experience. We will most definitely be back!

I did not stay at the Inn… I swung by for lunch. Amazing lunch. The fries were awesome. Honestly everything was wonderful. Pretzels, tomato soup, Caesar’s salad, and Fish and chips. My wife and I split each dish and it was a filling lunch. Our bartender (I believe Nathaniel maybe?) was a pleasure. Excellent cocktails. Worth a stop and worth going out of your way for a bite. I wish I took more pictures… Had such a nice meal I’m toying with the idea of getting a room and having a nice dinner, and staying at the inn on day!

My husband and I stayed at the Inn for 2 nights. The room, suite 10, was nicely appointed and very cozy. The stairs leading up to the third floor were old and creaky but that added to the historical charm. We dined in the Flat Five tavern on the first night and the food, service, and live music was outstanding. We chose the main dining room the second night and again delighted in an excellent meal with top notch service. We were in town for a very sad occasion but the staff made our stay comfortable and we felt very welcome. We look forward to returning under better circumstances to enjoy more of the area. Thank you!

First Time Visit! Little confusion when we arrived on whether or not they could accommodate us. I called a few minutes before, gentleman said he could take us but on arrival there we were almost turned away by the hostess. Not the best start but thankfully they made it work. We ended up downstairs which is slightly different from main dining area upstairs but lovely. No live music that night but I’d come back to Try it. The Game Changer of the night was our server Nick! He really made the visit great. Food was delicious and Suggestions were on point. We will definitely be back and happy to find out why many of my clients love it here. Even saw a few on the way out! Can’t wait to come again!

Very welcoming staff - excellent, attentive yet not overwhelming service! It's true about those duck fat fries and pretzel knots- VERY tasty. Specials were noteworthy, portions more than adequate (bag it up!), Quaint cozy atmosphere.... delicious experience!

Hosted a baby shower here this weekend and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. From the initial planning to the last drink poured, the team at 1754 House was kind, responsive, and truly accommodating - especially with a few last-minute adjustments we needed to make. A special shoutout to Kaleigh, who was not only present and helpful the day of but also incredibly thoughtful in the days leading up to the event. Marissa was a huge help coordinating in advance via email, and our waitress Kylie (sp?) was attentive, upbeat, and made sure everything flowed seamlessly. We were a smaller group (~17 guests), but the team made it feel like a full-scale celebration. They offered customizable menu options that worked for everyone - including vegetarians and pescatarians - and even provided a lovely mocktail menu alongside a cash bar, which made the event feel extra special without being overcomplicated. They also allowed us to take some maternity photos on-site shortly after the shower wrapped, which was such a thoughtful gesture. I especially appreciated that they sent photos of the décor items they already had in-house ahead of time - this helped me plan what to bring (and what not to buy), and their existing touches really elevated the space. If you’re planning a special event in the area, I can’t recommend 1754 House enough. Thoughtful team, historic venue, and a genuinely easy, joyful experience from start to finish.

Had a meal with my family and had high expectations after reading other reviews. I had the fish and chips and was very disappointed. The fish was bland and had a very unusual breaded crust on it, not the typical crispy batter. It had no flavor whatsoever and was a bit soggy. I like like unique styles of cooking, but this was not good. The fries which were cooked in duck fat were very brown, but most were not crispy which was odd. Others at my table had the pork roast sandwich and complained that there was hardly any meat, just an egg. The sides of cole slaw with the two orders of fish and chips were basically cabbage soaked in oil, very greasy and inedible to two people. We finished the meal with an order of beignets for the table. Again, disappointed. Usually these are served with powdered sugar. In this case they were heavily covered in cinnamon and sugar. Normally I would say this would be good, but there was SO much of it that we were literally gagging on it. My husband and I came home and we both had stomach aches. The atomosphere was ok, but not charming for the history of the building. The service was good, but sadly we will not be back.

Google
The host and waitress were lovely. Service was truly great all around. The restaurant itself had a fascinating aesthetic. I loved the pulley lights framing the fireplace. The soups were also great. The French Onion was a bit salty to my taste, but had a good flavor. The clam chowder was actually my favorite that I've had since moving to New England. However, the burger and fries were truly horrendous. They were the worst I've had in over twenty years. I ordered my burger "pink" per the menu, expecting a juicy, flavorful bite with a touch of pink. What I received was a historical artifact. This patty wasn’t cooked—it may have been excavated from the ruins of Pompeii. If I had known my meal would be carbon-dated rather than plated, I would have brought a chisel and a team of archaeologists instead of a fork and knife. Somewhere, a museum is missing an exhibit. The bun and bacon jam tried their best, but no amount of sauce could rehydrate what I can only assume was the final meal of a gladiator before Vesuvius erupted. And then came the fries - they were harder than my will to finish this meal. Each bite threatened my dental insurance. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to snack on obsidian shards, I highly recommend giving them a try.

Yelp
As a chef for more the 40 years I frequently have meals and service at restaurants that I'm happy with and occasionally just so-so. Tonight's planked salmon at 1754 was one of those evenings I can't say enough about the presentation, flavor and overall enjoyment. To the chef at 1754 Thank You for a great meal. To our waitress Nicole, thank you for your great service. Atmosphere in the upstairs dining room is always comfortable. Thank You Thank You Don Sheen

Yelp
Excellent t food, good service and rustic but comfy ambiance. Good choice of cocktails and beer as well. I know this place has been through a few changes the last 10 Years including Gordon Ramsey "intervention" several years back, which we did not like at all. The present owner/proprietor/chef and service staff are on the right path now however. We'll be back soon.

Yelp
I went to the 1754 House for restaurant week, and it was amazing! I still remember it as the Curtis House, but the upstairs dining has been disconnected from the jazzier bar below. The food was well cooked, maybe not wintery, but would be great for summer. The shrimp and corn risotto was beautiful and delicious, and the shrimp had a bit with hint of salt, perfectly seasoned. The white chocolate creme brulee had this thick sugar crust, yet the spoon broke right through. I hope the ghost is as pleased as the patrons.

Yelp
Awesome restaurant in Woodbury that we ended up trying for restaurant week. We enjoyed appetizer, dinner and dessert. Place was quite busy so make sure to make reservations! I loved my sweet corn risotto with shrimp and my husband enjoyed his short rib macaroni and cheese. We will check out the tavern next time as there is entertainment downstairs on certain nights. Small bar area but it's so unique in there because of the age of the building it's very neat! Check it out if you're coming down Route 6 into Woodbury.

Yelp
Great service. I had a crispy fish sandwich that was pretty good. The restaurant wasn't quiet but it wasn't too loud either.

Yelp
One here while I was back home visiting family. Went out for a date night and it was a very nice experience. It's a quaint 18 century home with much of its original charm. The food was good and the service was excellent. If you're looking for a special night out, I would recommend it.

Yelp
I took a break from the hustle and bustle and stopped into 1754 House. This charming and historic location opened in 1754. It features rustic charm with modern touches. My martini was absolutely magnificent. The bartender mixed my drink without fault and the ratios were perfect. The Rona glassware was distinctive and different. I loved its shape and size because it raised the quality of my cocktail. The food could not have been any better. I want to highlight the restaurant-made hummus. It was seasoned perfectly and I could eat it daily. My experience was high-quality with great attention to detail and the staff was incredibly mindful of the guest experience. My only regret is not coming sooner. Read more on IG: themartinibible

Yelp
The 1754 House is such a cute, cozy spot perfect fall or winter dinner. The building is a beautiful historic building that houses an inn, restaurant, and tavern. We dined in the restaurant portion of the building in a cozy room with dimmed lighting and fireplace. We came for a Saturday night dinner and service was great! Food and drinks arrived so quickly. The menu includes nice variety of dishes for every taste. I had the French onion soup, pub burger, and finished with the mocha chocolate pot de crème and cappuccino. Everything was very well done. The burger came with duck fat fries which made them stand out as extra rich and crispy. I appreciated the little extra touches. They started us off with a bread basket with house made hummus. Complimentary bread is so rare nowadays so that was a lovely touch! We were celebrating a birthday so they lit a candle in our pot de crème. They even gave us a little bag of ginger snap cookies with the check. I would definitely return to this charming Woodbury restaurant.

Yelp
We recently attended my son's football banquet (youth) and I was just blown away by the entire event. The room was a redisgned garage that was awesome looking and perfect for our group event. I plan events for my school and I will keep 1754 house in mind. The food and drinks were amazing as well. We enjoyed salmon, roasted chicken, chicken tenders, roasted potatoes and roasted root vegetables. My husband- who never enjoys veg- has been continuing to rave about these. Such a positive experience will bring the two of us back soon to dine in the restaurant area.

Yelp
We were visiting Bethlehem Connecticut for a weekend getaway and decided to try out this spot, on a cold night in January few weeks back. Upon arrival the parking lot was filled with cars and was difficult to find a spot but we eventually did. Once we got into the restaurant FOH was definitely lacking, we weren't greeted or welcomed so we just waited by the entrance. Hence I'm taking off one star. They could do better in that regard. After about 10 minutes we were led into the back room which was really nice, and our server definitely made the experience better, he was warm, smiled alot, was knowledgeable and gave good recommendations. The food was really good with big portions. I had to get a takeout.

Yelp
Great experience at 1754. I was lacking today with my pictures because I wanted to get to eating. I came in for lunch with my two friends and one of those friends with her children. The staff were all very nice to the kids. Our waitress was great offering to bring the kids macaroni and cheese first. Baby Loretta gave a thumbs up to the mac and cheese she kept wanting more! I ordered a beautiful cappuccino as my drink. It was smooth and creamy. My burger was very good with homemade pickles. The fries were perfect nice and crispy. I ordered the apricot bourbon bbq smoked wings to bring home to my husband. He re-heated them in the toaster oven and they still tasted amazing. I got lucky and he gave me two. The smokey wing with the whipped bleu cheese - Yum! Hope to get back to 1754 soon!

Yelp
One of our fave spots in Woodbury! Whatever you order, don't forget to get a side of duck fat fries. You won't regret it! Check out some live music downstairs at the Flat Five!

Yelp
As we passed through the area, I saw this historical building & restaurant pull up. The building has a plaque that says it was built in 1736. Inside, the place was busy on a Sunday though there were plenty of seats available -- so I thought it a bit strange that we were asked if we'd be done in under 2 hours. To eat, we ordered the charcuterie board and the chef chose a blue cheese, 2 meats, peppers, and pickled onions in a mustard cream sauce. Great choices! My husband had the special: gnocchi pesto with pulled chicken mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes which was a bit too cheesy though my heirloom tomato risotto was excellent!

Yelp
We had a bridal shower here. The food was so delicious - everyone raved about the tasty offerings. The ambience is unique and charming. We had an issue with service and the owner/chef was extremely helpful and generous in addressing the issue. A top-notch venue that impresses on every level.

Yelp
I absolutely loved this place. Spontaneously stopped in for lupper with my husband. Sat at the bar. Place was still quiet. Our bartender was great! Loved the ambience! Old New England restaurant vibes all the way! Romantic & quiet but if packed, probably very lively. Had their burger on gf bun. Only 2 things on their entire menu cannot be made GF. The Pub burger (amazing flavor) and duck fat fries fries (perfectly crispy) were among the best I've ever had!!! I'm super picky about both! I highly recommend this place and plan to come back again!!!

Yelp
Okay, there is a small cafe behind the 1754house called the Flat Five and it is DELIGHTFUL! They have live jazz and an excellent modern menu. A bit on the pricy side, although keeping with the Litchfield County vibe. Great musicians, who know the repertoire. (Only draw back is they burned the duck fat fries, LOL) Appetizer of Olives & Brussel sprouts, really tasteful. Good food and great adult atmosphere!

Yelp
Consistently one of the best dining experiences in the Woodbury area and worth the drive if your not local! Today we stopped in for a late lunch and the service was terrific, thank you Melanie. The clam chowder is rich and smokey, served with their homemade bread. A go to classic is the fish and chips! Thick cut, tender pieces of cod, lightly battered and fried. Accompanied with a generous portion of duck fat fries! The tartar sauce is the star of the dish! Enjoy!

Yelp
Our friends invited us to try the 1754 House and we were blown away by our experience! Great service and the food was excellent. It's been a while since a meal excited me with how good it was. The space itself was cozy and historic. We loved it!

Yelp
We went to one of our favorite dining venues for a relaxing Saturday afternoon lunch. And it did not disappoint. Menu selections including 'specials' were inviting. Our service was outstanding.. We requested Julia, who has been our server during previous visits, and she was delightful. Today we'd like yo give a 'shout out'. to bartender Blake, and Scott ( another server) for their courteous and attentive service. The presentation of menu choices was appealing and did not disappoint. For anyone that hasn't tried 1754, it is a 'must try'.! We look forward to our next visit.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience we had. There is just something so special and authentic about this restaurant, you can just feel it immediately when you arrive. The staff is super attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and wine selection. The food is very fresh and seasoned just right, everything we had was delicious and thoughtfully prepared. Honestly, this is my very favorite restaurant and I will always remember what a magical experience I had there, so thank you Chef! K

Yelp
Best food in the area. The Onion Soup is second to none. Pretzel bites are delicious. Amazing cocktails also. The service is incredible and the entire staff is friendly and attentive! My favorite restaurant in the area by far!

Yelp
We had a solid time at 1754 House the first time we ate at the restaurant a few weeks ago. We started with the baked brie - it came with crostini and fig jam. Really delicious. We both ordered the steak frites -- what can I say, I'm a sucker for steak and fries. It was cooked really nicely at medium rare and tasted delicious. The fries were salty and flavorful too. The ambiance is old school, and feels like you're in an old timey dining chamber. Pretty cool. Where it stumbled was in the service. Our server was friendly, but rarely seen. Near the end of the meal, she disappeared for half an hour after we had finished eating. I'm one of those people who hates waiting forever for the check, and this kind of put a damper on an otherwise excellent evening. Altogether a great dinner and despite the service misstep, I'll be back sometime.

Yelp
1754 House is a beautiful Inn, Restaurant and Tavern. It is a historical inn and resort that hosts many events, including weddings and dinners. I loved the rustic charm of the dining room and the fire place made the room feel cozy. All of the wait staff, from the bartender to our waiter to other waiters were so nice and friendly! We did order a few appetizers including, Fired Roasted Shishito Peppers, Roasted Brussel Sprouts and my favorite of the night Cauliflower Gratin! All the appetizers were incredible. So delicious and they were enough for 6 people to share. For dinner I ordered the Sweet Potato Cod and wow that cod was cooked to perfection! The cod had a delicious lemon flavor and it just melted in your mouth. The potatoes with the cod gave it some nice flavor and texture. I loved the greens on the cod as well for some extra crunch. The lemon butter sauce was perfect because it did not over take the taste of the cod, but elevated the flavors!

Janet B.

Yelp
Greasy sprouts, overly oily salad dressing. Had the special, a fennel salad. Apparently the kitchen doesn't have a mandolin as the few bits of fennel were thick and tough and the salad was so loaded with thick slices of red onion it was inedible. Hope the server told the chef but even so we still had to pay for it. Don't offer a free drink or dessert, just don't charge the next customer who complains for bad food! Won't be back!
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
Ambiance was nice, food was ok. Service was pretty spotty at best meaning no one cleaned off table after appetizers so table room was tight. Did not understand that part. Doubt I will be back...

Yelp
2nd visit to this lovely place on a few months. Clients are greeted well and benefit from plenty of waitresses eager to make your experience enjoyable. The brunch menu is worth the try and we felt the professionalism of the kitchen. I just wish the service would be a little faster, I was under the impression that most of the crew was in the dining area, and not enough resources in the kitchen. Kudos for the little gift that came with the check, a simple testimonial of the talent of the pastry chef. A solid place for sure.

N M.

Yelp
Went back last weekend and it remains painful. Blake is truly the worst bartender I've ever experienced.
google avatar

Stuart H.

Yelp
Great American food in a really old building. There isn't much to say that hasn't been said in other reviews already. The clam chowder is one of the best we've ever had, with a rich creamy, bacon flavor. The bread was served with delicious hummus and was just an amazing start to the meal. We split a burger and it was really perfectly cooked the way we'd asked for it, and just absolutely delicious with the pickles and aioli on it. The fries were super crispy but not overdone, and the only problem for us was they were overly salty due to the use of flake style salt. Next time we'll ask for the fries without salt I think.

Garrett G.

Yelp
Brussels were heavy and oily. $30 steak frites - tiny, chewy sirloin and a pound of fries. Sweet bacon jam too sweet altered an otherwise savory dish. My wife said her fish and chips were good. Service was good.
google avatar

Mas P.

Yelp
If I could give more than 5 stars I would. The service was out of this world. The host and our waiter (Brad) were amazing. Very complimentary. We felt at home. The fire place was a lovely and eating in a toasty room on a cold night was amazing. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures; however, we ordered the sea-salt beet salad which was delicious, the French onion soup had such good flavor, and the steak frites including duck fat fries that should not be missed!!!

Jacquelyn A.

Yelp
Haven't been since it changed ownership. Went for brunch and it was lovely. Food was very good. Interesting take on pancakes. Charming spot! Good service.

John C.

Yelp
Service was good. Food was decent. Atmosphere bland. Overall a good experience. Just want to try something new.

Yelp
What a beautiful place... The ambiance of the 1754 is on point. Decorated with a colonial style & feel like-- feeling very classic and cozy. There is a main dining room and (I believe?) a more lounge/bar area located below (different entrance). They have a wide array of food, from apps and small plates to burgers & salads to full on entrees. They also have a full wine list and cocktail list. When my friend and I went, it was late so we just decided on drinks, charcuterie, and soup as a mix-and-match type of situation, but it was just as amazing!!! I will definitely be going back for a full dinner sometime in the very near future.

Yelp
Amazing food and a wonderful room to stroll up to after dinner! Baked brie with apple butter was really yummy!

Yelp
Food is excellent and well prepared. Service was pleasant and efficient. The dining room is comfortable and relaxing. One of the oldest inns in Connecticut.

Yelp
Terrible service.. we had to ask for refills and ice. We were a party of four and our entrees were just ok. The food was lukewarm and pricey. Disappointed

Good food, great service. Historic 1700s house with wonderful ambience. Owner is a great supporter of the Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department.

Yelp
A friend and I were out on a Saturday Adventure traveling around the state looking for things to do. When we got hungry in the Woodbury area we searched YELP and found this fabulous gem. It was mid afternoon and so it was not busy. We were greeted and seated quickly, and our server was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We chose a specialty Manhattan which was smooth and delicious and the perfect accompaniment to the fresh oysters. They were flavorful with the perfect brine and texture and served with a raspberry minuet and a light cocktails sauce neither of which was needed. The menu is small but there is a great choice for every palate and judging from our meal, the kitchen is focused on providing a high quality, flavorful meal over variety. I chose the plank roasted salmon with honey and Dijon mustard, roasted fingerling potatoes and harvest vegetables. I was a little concerned that the Dijon would overpower the salmon, but it was a mild glaze upon perfectly cooked, perfectly sized salmon. The roasted sides were sweet and a great accompaniment. My friend chose the sweet potato crusted cod, also excellent, with a thick moist cut atop well season greens. A healthy but satisfying meal. We chose to share cafe mocha dark chocolate pot de crème which was absolutely decadent. It was flavorful and chocolatey with our being too much after a full meal. The coffee was excellent. The decor is a nod to the name of the restaurant and inn but upscale and modern. It was the perfect ending to a great day!

Yelp
1854 House has quickly become my favorite place to have dinner and drinks in Woodbury. As I normally dine alone as sit at the bar - I appreciate conversations with the bar staff, servers, front of house staff and the occasional visit from the Chef. Blake, Nolan, Jim (or Tim sorry), are professionals that truly enjoy their profession. They are professional, friendly, engaging, attentive, and flat out enjoyable. The upstairs bar is cozy, and a great place to meet friends, locals, and folks visiting the area, without the noise of a dozen flat screens and blaring music. The tavern downstairs has been remodeled and is a perfect place to meet up with a larger group of friends and listen to more progressive music or live entertainment. Nolan has been tending bar downstairs and has great plans to extend the craft beverage selection as well as the entertainment. He reports that he is ideally looking for local talent to book time and entertain guests downstairs on a more lively and casual environment. The new owners have invested a good deal of money into renovations and upgrades and have plans to do even more. This is a place to stop by, relax, enjoy an excellent meal (I haven't had one that hasn't been extremely enjoyable - and skip the overcrowded, noisier places - when you want a change - and not spend a fortune. The prices are moderate / reasonable benched against other places in the area - and it is totally non pretentious. It's just an easy place to relax and enjoy - in a "upgraded Connecticut Yankee" Inn.

Yelp
Just did takeout. Free range chicken and vegetables were salted so excessively it couldn't be eaten . Also had fish and chips. Fish was ok but truffle fries were drowned in oil and excessively salted. Not going back

Yelp
The excellence starts at the entrance podium. During all of our many visits, this podium has been managed by Scott, who gives his best and a guarantee that your dinning experience will exceed your expectations. Consistently it has been superb. The service, cocktails, wine list and food are the best in our area. I recommend everything on the menu. I have been most impressed with the freshness and preparation of seafood dishes offered, including the raw shell fish and delicious clam chowder. The wait staff is extremely knowledgeable with regard to the menu and how items are prepared. The dinning rooms can get a bit noisy, especially if you are seated near the bar, which for some reason is in the middle of everything. I have enjoyed the many reincarnations of this restaurant, but this the crowned jewel. You will enjoy an exceptional dining experience, Scott and staff will see to it.

Yelp
We've been here only once and enjoyed our meal. Formerly the Curtis House it has been revamped from top to bottom and looks amazing with a whole new menu, new owner and chefs . For me, the menu is slightly limited because I'm not a meat eater but I tried the Mac and cheese and fries , my husband ordered a burger and everything was very good. Very positive experience.

Yelp
We had dinner in the tavern and it was a great experience. Would recommend , our waiter, Tim was very pleasant and knowledgeable

Yelp
Beautiful meal at an affordable price along with a pleasant staff! The organic beet salad, risotto and cod were extremely tasty. For drinks, try their espresso martini with Baileys.

Yelp
Atmosphere and food always amazing. Friendly staff. Downstairs is really Cool with Live music.

Yelp
We had a family get-together for brunch yesterday and found this place excellent. The surroundings were charming, the service was attentive and the food was terrific. Nothing pretentious, just good stuff, well made, nicely presented and tasty. The first of our party ordered a charcuterie platter before the rest of us arrived and it got there just as we did. It was a generous array of meats and cheeses that could have easily been a meal for two or three. Delicious bread, bleu, brie, cheddar, sopressata, genoa salami, calabrian peppers, pickled onions, three types of mustards and jams. It was memorable. High quality, but not overwhelmingly huge entrees (great corned beef hash, btw) some accompanied by duck-fat french fries. Need I say more? Worth a visit for sure. Unfortunately for me, I live more than an hour away or I would put this in the rotation for repeat visits. It's midway between members of the family, so this may well become a common meet-up point.

Yelp
Great Birthday Dinner with My Favorites and My People. Quiet early dinner and busy fun after 7. Wonderful meals every bite was memorable and dreamy. Not much in leftovers but we are rolling towards the door.

Ann D.

Yelp
We had dinner there last night and it was really good. Two of us had the pork roast special - enough food that we could easily have shared it. The third person had the skillet lasagna which was very good and also large enough for two to share. Cocktails seemed a little light on the alcohol. Wines by the glass had a pedestrian selection although there were several nice ones by the bottle. The atmosphere was casual and wait staff very nice. We will return.

Excellent service, great food. Will definitely be back! Phenomenal clam chowder and steak and eggs. Cod was out of this world!
