At 8:00PM on a random October 2025 Saturday evening we found ourselves in Tyler Tx headed back to Houston. The 1836 Kitchen is a casual, slightly upscale restaurant with good food, good value and very good service. There is originality in the traditional TX dishes like CF Steak, Shrimp Tacos or Nachos. In fact the Shredded Pork Nachos were all one needs to eat, offered exceptional flavor at a very fair price. In fact, the next day, a slight craving to repeat the meal lingered, always a good sign. The Shrimp Tacos included three plumply stuffed Tacos with juicy and fresh tasting shrimp plus flavorful and original refried beans. There was a slight hint of a Latin American flair that lifted the dishes beyond the standard Tx-Mex look and taste so familiar across the SW. The service was exceptional, professional, friendly and helpful. A bit of additional focus on details with consideration to plating and presentation would be a great plus, yet the quality, quantity, and flavor was well above average. The restaurant was moderately busy with customers including three large parties and a private group in the upstairs private dining room. For what appeared to be a sound-lively room, the noise level and atmosphere including cloth napkins, on lacquered wood tables, was fine. A long vibrant bar makes-up one side while offset by a half-wall and an open staircase to balcony seating giving the room the effect of an old west saloon complimented by interesting modern lighting. All good and well worth a visit!
