On the Grid : 1872 River House

"This hotel is very well located in Ribeira. The staff is friendly, and the rooms offer beautiful panoramic riverfront views. It's wonderful eating breakfast in such a comfortable room. You can hire bikes from reception so you can cruise on the boardwalk by the river. This is a place where things happen at the pace and rhythm of a city that is both traditional and modern." - Ana Bárbara & Armindo Araújo

What a fabulous place to stay in Porto. Located right on the Duoro River, everything is a short walk away (albeit with some stairs at times). Bruna greeted us and was a gracious and welcoming host. The room was lovely and comfortable. Breakfast (and our servers) was superb and we enjoyed everything about 1872 River House, especially the personal touch.

Wonderful location, great room with views. Removing 1 star for air conditioning not working. We visited in June and it would have been nice to have ac, but we were ok with the fan and open windows. We used the provided transfer to/from the airport, with no problems. I would recommend this hotel

We had a wonderful experience at the 1872 River House. The hotel itself was charming with thoughtful details in our room such as a handwritten welcome note and cookies and an amazing view. The room itself was spacious, clean and the bed and pillows were very comfortable as well as the room was very quiet despite being in a prime tourist location. The breakfast every morning was wonderful from American coffee, espresso and an assortment of cheeses, yogurt and other breakfast delights. The staff were kind and attentive going out of there was to make our stay enjoyable. One day we had a tour booked for early in the morning and we would be able to attend breakfast and the staff made us "to go" lunch/breakfast bags hand delivered to our room before we had to leave for our tour. The location of the hotel made it easy to explore Port and Gaia due to its central location and allowing us to take it the city and offerings maximizing our vacation. I would definitely stay at the 1872 River house again. Our wonderful room was cleaned everyday, our beautiful view and central location with breakfast included made it an amazing trip to Porto and a wonderful deal.

I selected this hotel for the uniqueness of the rooms and location on the river. What I didn't know is that it is the last hotel on the tourist strip. I would have rather been closer to the walking bridge and dining with the buskers. However, it was only a 5 minute walk and I saved $30 per night by being further away.||The staff is superb. I was only expecting a continental breakfast, but was offered a fresh omelette! I was surprised when my ingredients came on the side, but maybe that's a European thing. Plenty of options on the buffet to compliment my omelette. I was unable to take advantage of the meal two other days and had a bagged breakfast on my door handle. Two different meals which was a nice change.||The room was comfortable and completely quiet with the windows shut. I was last in the hotel to take a shower one day and had a cold shower. Didn't make that mistake again.||I liked that this hotel was right next to the taxi stand for my longer travels. On Sunday they move around the corner due to church service. I also admit, I took advantage of McDonald's hot fudge sundae for dessert. But I worked it off the next morning using their patio as my workout facility -- they clear all the tables and I used the bench for dips!

Wonderful small guesthouse with very attentive staff. Nothing was too much trouble. ||Very accommodating in terms of early arrival and very early departure. Organised taxis and food bags to go as missed breakfast and always replied to e mail enquires very promptly before we arrived. Breakfast was good, tea and coffee available all day in dining/ lounge area. ||We had three rooms, the 2 river frontage rooms are beautiful in terms of decor and stunning views but can be noisy at weekends. The noise is from the other side of the river, so not the immediate locality and is we believe limited to local festival periods. |The city view room was quiet. ||The guesthouse is located centrally, an easy walk along the riverfront and close to restaurants, historic highlights, and the old city tram stop. It is a building of character that is part of old traditional Porto. ||Would definately stay again.

We were pleasantly surprised with this Botique-ish hotel. It was spacious, clean and quiet even if on the busy river front street. Parking was close and the service (except breakfast the last day when we couldn’t get hot wggs) was great. We had breakfast there every morning. I would stay here again without a doubt. Everything is up from the hotel, but then most things worthwhile are!
