On the Grid : 1872 River House

"This hotel is very well located in Ribeira. The staff is friendly, and the rooms offer beautiful panoramic riverfront views. It's wonderful eating breakfast in such a comfortable room. You can hire bikes from reception so you can cruise on the boardwalk by the river. This is a place where things happen at the pace and rhythm of a city that is both traditional and modern." - Ana Bárbara & Armindo Araújo

1872 River House, Porto, Portugal - Explore & Book

"Tumbling down towards the Douro, the historic Ribeira district is a beguiling jumble of sun-dappled squares, crumbling townhouses and laundry-strung lanes. At its very heart, right on the riverbank, sits this sophisticated little B&B - a tall, skinny mansion in salmon pink, reached via a stained-glass walkway that casts colourful reflections over the cobbles outside. Born in 2014 from the ashes of a 19th-century building damaged by fire, it ticks all the boxes for an easy break in Portugal’s buzzing second city. The eight rooms (some facing the water, others the street) are impeccably restored, with sleek furniture, sink-into beds and swish rain showers alongside exposed stone walls and heavy wooden shutters. The friendly team will point you in the direction of museums, galleries and restaurants, and the famous port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia are just across the river. And when you tire of sightseeing, feasting and wine-tasting, you can amble back to the lounge and relax with a drink as barges chug slowly past. Highs An unbeatable location near restaurants and sights - and Tram No.1, which rattles along to the beach, stops right outside We loved the views over the Douro from the lounge and many rooms Breakfast is served until a lazy 1pm - perfect for indulgent holiday lie-ins Smiling staff who are passionate about their city and keen to make you feel at home You’ll get a handy code providing free WiFi across Porto Lows A couple of rooms have open-plan ensuites (not for those who like their privacy), though toilets are enclosed Not ideal for kids, with no extra beds or baby cots and a serene atmosphere that's best suited to couples or friends Some street noise, particularly from the City View rooms Don't expect a full-service hotel; this is very much a B&B and it's not staffed around the clock" - Abi Dare

1872 River House (Porto, Norte) 33 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"For all its old-world charm and tourist appeal, Porto — one of the oldest settlements in Europe — comes up a little short with respect to attractive hotels. That’s why it’s important to book ahead if you’re planning on staying at a sought-after guesthouse like 1872 River House. It’s perfectly positioned and smartly outfitted, but it’s only got eight rooms." - Tablet Hotels

This hotel is incredible. I honestly don’t understand how it’s not rated 5 stars across the board. The location is perfect, right on the river, and it’s easy to get around Porto from here.||We’re really picky with hotels since we travel a lot, and this one checked all the boxes. Our river-view room was quiet, the bed was super comfortable, and the view was gorgeous. Breakfast was great too.||When we visited (early September), they were fixing the main AC units in the rooms, but they had a portable unit in our room and it worked totally fine. No complaints there.||What really stood out was the service. Bruna welcomed us with such a warm smile and was so helpful, it instantly made us feel relaxed after a long travel day.||If you want a quiet, comfortable, and charming spot that’s not right in the middle of all the crowds, this is the place to stay. We will send everyone here.

Right on the water with so many restaurants and great views. Worth the cost. Lovely breakfast. The staff was very helpful answering all my logistical questions. Would love to have stayed longer. Highly recommend this boutique guest house of only 8 rooms in the old section of town on the edge of all the action. A wonderful restaurant right next door, not to be missed! Note there are 2 ways to enter the house. The top being the easier way. 😉 Highly recommend!

Loved the 1872 River House. It was the perfect location. We did not have a river view from our room, but our room was right off the entry hall where we could open the stained glass windows and look out at the river and the city. Our room was small, but comfortable. The staff was outstanding! They had had problems with the air conditioning, and had to put a portable unit (and rather unattractive, I might add) in our charming room. They went to great lengths to compensate with wine, cookies, welcoming drink, and a full breakfast. The breakfasts were great. Several nights I needed to ice my knee, and they gave me the ice and offered to call a doctor if needed. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Perfect location, comfortable rooms, fabulous hosts and a great breakfast. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and also gave us nice extra perks (wine! food!) because they had to use a portable AC unit while their main AC is out.

1872 River House has a great location, right on the Duro River, next to a McDonalds. It's clean and the staff are very attentive, though no staff after 10 p.m. on the premises. Nice morning breakfast. My only complaint was thus: My wife and I were on our honeymoon and the rooms advertised as double beds are in fact, two single beds shoved together, but separate. The room on the other side of us also featured the same arrangement. Even the photos seem to fudge on this one, so buyer beware and that's the reason for three stars.

Wonderful location, great room with views. Removing 1 star for air conditioning not working. We visited in June and it would have been nice to have ac, but we were ok with the fan and open windows. We used the provided transfer to/from the airport, with no problems. I would recommend this hotel

We loved staying here. The location, staff, and breakfast were great. The rooms were a bit small but comfortable and clean. The staff were great; thanks to Berna, Maria, and Theresa.

I will recommend this spot over and over again! Great for solo travelers or couples. You couldn’t ask for a better location, nicer staff or cuter room. This place is everything your instagram dreams of. And the homemade breakfast was delicious!
