"Start from the top. What's this place all about?Hip, clean and compact, 1899 is a next generation of Tokyo hotel that was built for a new generation of traveler. Check-in feels more like a local coffee roaster than a lobby, with polished wood and wabi sabi accenting. The design was inspired by a traditional Japanese tea house, but it reflects a millennial audience: adventurous and on-the-go, with little need nor care for overindulgence. So is it a one-off little gem, or part of a chain?Ryumeikan is a century-old Japanese hotelier. But this property, a tea-themed boutique hotel, is quite unlike the rest. Everything from the toiletries in the room to the herbal experts in the cafe are centered around the hot drink and its place in Japanese culture. What can we expect from the rooms?Rooms at 1899 are quaint without being confined. The Superior Double measures about 215 square feet, which is plenty of room to unfold and spread your wings. Fixtures evoke traditional Japanese design: an engawa-style bench, paneling that recalls the tatami-mat styling of a washitsu room. Even the lamps riff on the tea theme, with a look that resembles the chasen whisk used in matcha-making. Tea aside, are there any good eats available on-site?Food's limited to DELI&BAR on the first floor, an on-the-go cafe with various tea-themed items, including matcha liver paste and tea-flavored sausages. There are also matcha-infused sweets, including gelato, waffles, and anmitsu. How's the service?Don't expect pampering—or even room service—but if you're looking for a reasonably priced stay and a consistent theme, this is a great option. Even more so if you're into tea; if you're really into it, ask one of the onsite tea sommeliers for hands-on demonstrations and tastings. And what can we expect from the other guests?They're typing away on their phones, planning a night out in Harajuku and Roppongi. How about the surrounding neighborhood—is there anything fun to do a bit closer to the hotel?Shimbashi is the salaryman capital of Tokyo; during the day, the neighborhood fills with suits and ties crowding into the metro lines. But the convenient location affords easy access to much of the rest of Tokyo, as well as Haneda airport, which is less than 30 minutes away by cab. Is there anything you'd change?We'd love to see more dining options and a lobby bar. The 1899 Hotel is beautifully designed, with a calm, refined atmosphere throughout, and we were very glad we chose to stay here twice on our recent trip. We loved the matcha theme and the complimentary matcha experience - watching it being prepared so carefully was a lovely and unique touch that really set the experience apart. Check-in was smooth and friendly. The rooms were sensibly sized and very well designed, thoughtfully laid out and very comfortable. The location is excellent - a pleasant walk to Ginza and even to TeamLab, and close to two stations - our go-to hotel in Tokyo.

Wonderful hotel, about a 15 minute walk from Shimbashi Station.. The hotel is located in a quiet safe neighborhood .We stayed in 2 different room types. one where the sink was in the bathroom and the other where it was next to the bed. I preferred the former since I am used to that kind of layout but the iother room was very nice too. The staff was very nice and welcoming and the freshly made tea each morning was a great amenity. Its not close to many of the attractions first time visitors like to visit but I didn’t mind it. It made it feel like you were really coming home each night to a quiet restful place. Would highly recommend.

I’ve stayed at many boutique hotels, but this one has easily become my favorite. Beyond its prime location in Shimbashi’s business district, what truly sets it apart is the level of care shown to guests, from the warm welcome to the thoughtful, attentive service throughout the stay. Each day, the hotel refreshes the in-room tea selection and bath powder, a small but delightful touch that never felt repetitive. The highlight for me was the tea service at the reception lounge, where you can sit, unwind, and enjoy their original teas carefully prepared by the staff. I found myself there every single day, it was that good.

The standard double room we booked was the perfect size for us and our 5-year-old. It was very comfortable and clean (by Japanese standards). I really loved the bed because the mattress was firm and my back didn’t feel sore the next morning. Enjoying complimentary fresh matcha at the Tea Counter was also a great experience. Staff was very friendly and they responded to emails quickly prior to our arrival. The hotel was just few minutes walk from the Shimbashi Station and other public transportations, and was surrounded by lots of local restaurants and convenience stores. Overall, we could not have been more pleased with our 6-day-stay at Hotel 1899.

This hotel is well situated within Tokyo for sightseeing. The staff at this hotel were super welcoming and helpful. After getting off a long haul flight, this was a nice hotel to arrive at. The rooms themselves are small (to be expected in Japan and especially in Tokyo) but there was still enough room to move around and store our suitcases easily. The room amenities were nice and I loved the anti-fog mirror in the bathroom. The complimentary matcha experience at the reception was also great. Overall a great stay and we would consider staying here again in the future!

Overall, we had a pleasant stay here. The rooms are on the smaller side as expected in a lot of stays in Tokyo, but they're designed very functionally. The matcha tea ceremony was a cool experience, and literally everything down to the bathroom toiletries were matcha/tea-themed (they smelled amazing btw). The hotel itself is situated in a pretty quiet area, about 10 min from two different train stations. Best part of our stay was definitely the breakfast - everything was freshly prepared and tasted amazing - honestly we looked forward to the breakfast every morning. It's not a huge buffet with lots of American-style choices (pancakes, bacon, hash browns etc.) so I can imagine some travelers might not enjoy it, but it was probably the best breakfast I've had in any hotel.

Lovely hotel! I love the matcha theme and the hotel and room smelled so lovely. All the amenities were matcha scented. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They helped us out to send our luggage to our next hotel. The hotel and the room was very clean and close to the train station. Will definitely come back

We stayed in this location which was great. Very close to train stations and the local area of Shimbashi. The hotel was a great stay overall, wonderful service and friendly staff. The rooms although small (as expected in Japan) were comfortable and cozy. The amenities were incredibly nice and the tea theme throughout the hotel was great. Will be staying here on a future Japan trip.

Very cute tea-centered hotel that's not too close to stations, in a quiet neighborhood with lovely interior design/amenities! This was our sixth and final hotel in Japan during a recent 2-week stay. This was surprisingly far from the nearest subway entrance for being located in Tokyo, and we ended up taking a couple taxi/Ubers since our feet were tired by this point in the trip! The ground floor is a cafe which had pretty limited hours, I think there were complimentary matcha/tea hours in the morning but I never personally saw them open... also I believe breakfast is down here and it seems like it was included in the past but it was an additional charge when I visited in June 2024! As for the room - very modern/high-tech and lovely! The entryway light had a motion-sensor and while there wasn't a ton of space (this is Tokyo after all), they managed to make the existing space feel roomy! The toilet/shower area was huge compared to the other hotels we visited, this may be partly due to the sink being in the main room area next to the desk/bed. I was pleasantly surprised by all the face/bath amenities available in a box next to the sink, as well as the snacks/fancy tea bags with the water heater and tea cups! Something else unique about this room was the tablet next to the bed - this had the alarm clock, useful links/Q&A, as well as extra controls for lighting. It definitely wasn't necessary but it felt like a fun detail that elevated the experience just enough! For the price, I would've expected a bit more of a central location, but overall I still had a great experience/relaxing experience here!

Matcha and green tea themed hotel with a matcha restaurant on the ground floor. Take the elevator to the second floor for check-in. Don't miss the complimentary different styles of matcha drinks served by the check-in area in as traditional a way that one can. I like the bamboo water ladle. The rooms are spacious for Japan big city standards and feature green tea toiletries. Even their light fixtures mimi the matcha frothing brush. It's located quite close to a lot of eating and drinking districts. Interesting craft breweries are a block away. Tamiya model store was a fun place to stop and look at, too.

A small Japanese tea house hotel that has the old Japanese traditional tea influence with the modern day meals that was set up in the dining area. The typical Japanese hospitality at the front desk seems to be the norm everywhere you go. The front desk clerks were very helpful in accommodating us. The room is small but we've stayed in smaller hotel rooms before so the accommodations were sufficient. The bed was firmer, but it was fine. The breakfast buffet was very good for the price. Easy location to walk to the train station.

This hotel is considered as a "tea hotel" and I can see it. The ambience is clean and has a modern tea feel. A lot of woody vibes which reminds me of the Muji Hotel. Service is great like any other service in Japan. It's close to Ginza which is one of my favorite cities so that's a plus! The reason why I scored them a 4/5 is for the following reasons: they offer free breakfasts however it's always the same so after three days in a row of the same breakfast items, it gets mundane. This is a small hotel so there are not many rooms available. I'm use to staying at more Americanized hotels so the room we had was too small for my liking. The bed is incredibly hard. My body was sore throughout the whole trip and this is coming from someone who frequently naps on the floor. If you're going there and looking for omiyage (gifts), I would highly recommend purchasing their matcha waffles and teas!

A bit out of the way, but very nice. Venue is new and the place shows it. A/C is new and works great. I upgraded to a Superior room and am enjoying it very much. A 10 minute walk from JR Shinbashi station. Rooms are not as big as Dai Ichi, but amenities are new and of the latest technology. The price is much better than the the big name hotels near Tokyo station. Very pleased.
