On the Grid : Street Art

"Venice has always been a home to the arts. Starting in the 70s with studios from the likes of: Jean-Michel Basquiat, John Bladessari, Dennis Hopper and Ed Ruscha on through it's gentrification - Venice remains a haven for artists of all kinds. But the art of Venice has never remained inside 4 walls. Take a walk around and on virtually any block you'll find large scale street art and murals - some rich with history and some sprayed over daily." - The Branding Farm

Located in a reconverted warehouse at Santa Monica Airport, the artist studios at this cultural stop in Santa Monica are definitely worth exploring. With free entrance and the opportunity to meet emerging artists, interact with them, and discuss their art, this is a place I highly recommend for a brief visit that can be completed in about 45-60 minutes.

Very nice and interesting works of all kinds... Lots of creativity!!! Personally I don't feel comfortable entering other artists studios... I prefer an open gallery... But, some intimacy sometimes work.

Local Art Center with several small buildings on the campus. Sponsors "Artists in Residence". Nurturing. Worth your support! Has several great events every year.

One of the best hidden arts organization in little Santa Monica, highly recommended for a visit, a drink, a great exhibition.

Yelp
Cutting-edge and timeless art by brilliant local and international minds. The curation of the 18th Street Arts Center Events is absolutely world class! In a city so often known for it's monetary focus, the center refreshingly keeps it's focus on the art and artists themselves, refusing to become blinded by art world commerciality.

Yelp
I never knew this artists' sanctuary even existed until last Sunday when I stopped by their 2nd annual fundraising event called BAM Fest. BAM = Beer, Art & Music, a perfect combination on a sunny afternoon. 18th Street was closed off to provide parking for food trucks & bicycles. I saw The Green Truck there, as well as Border Grille. 20 breweries donated beer from booths set up in a private courtyard flanked by galleries, where 4 bands provided live music. I only had time to stay for an hour, so I missed all the bands except Speedway (alone worth the trip from Redondo!). The event was packed but very well-organized. A bike valet was looking out for the crapload of parked bicycles. Maybe the reason I had no problem finding a spot for my car was because so many people rode their bikes. Beer and music were included in the price of admission ($35 advance, $40 at the door). All proceeds went toward funding spaces for artists to work & show their work.....a very good cause. The arts need support, especially in rough economic times. The festival attracted a great crowd. Despite all the free-flowing beer, people were upbeat without a hint of rowdiness. I love a good party on a Sunday afternoon and I'm guessing I'll be back next year when I will try to allow more time to hang out and enjoy the day.

Yelp
Came here for an art-show, it was very interesting and different from any other type of art I've ever seen. I really enjoyed a fresh perspective and seeing different artists express themselves!

Yelp
I love this place. I'm not sure if it's open to the public, but whenever I come over, I find it calming and pretty cool to see all the things that are being created here.

Yelp
My friends and I attended the Champagne Social yesterday, April 19th and were truly disappointed in what we saw! We felt there was such a lack of "art" among the studios and artists. We felt the best part of the day was the food and champagne and that should never outshine what is trying to be achieved. It's been many years since I visited the studios but I regretfully will never return. I commend these artists for "trying" but what I witnessed from the first tour of the Guatenala and Kyrgyzstan artists was sad and pathetic. They provided "art" consisting of a speaker producing gurgling noises and a styrofoam blob on the wall while the other artist provided colored photo copies of pictures taped on his wall. These are things a 5 year old could do! I am not sure why these artists were not vetted properly before this event to insure what art they would be showcasing. You should always respect and appreciate that the community comes to support artists but not insult us with such a lack of it. My time was very valuable yesterday and I felt it was not respected but insulted!

Yelp
18th Street Art center rocks and their BAM fest is so much fun. I've gone the past two years and can't wait for more art, music, and awesome beer!
