I celebrated my birthday with a lunch at 1947 on Vilakazi Street, and I couldn’t have chosen a better spot. From start to finish, it was nothing short of amazing—warm hospitality, rich flavors, and an atmosphere that made the day feel extra special.
The setting is elegant, right in the heart of Vilakazi Street, which already gives the place a sense of history and pride.
The food? Absolutely phenomenal. My brother and I had the mogodu with dombolo, and it was melt-in-your-mouth tender—comforting, hearty, and packed with flavour. My husband and my brother’s girlfriend ordered burgers ( I tasted the chips and for me personally the best chips I ever tasted) and everyone was raving at the table. For drinks the guys ordered theirs and we had a purple cocktail (completely forgot the name of the cocktail but it was nice, a bit too sweet but nice)
Our waiter was so friendly and attentive without hovering, and it really felt like we were being taken care of by someone who wanted us to enjoy the moment.
Price-wise, everything felt worth it—generous portions, great cocktails, and the overall experience made it feel like a celebration in every sense.
If you’re looking for a place to make a birthday feel special—delicious food, great vibes, and true South African hospitality—1947 is the one. I left full, happy, and already planning a return
