1953 Bar and Restaurant

Had a great meal here tonight, we didn’t book but they managed to squeeze us and and we are very grateful because the food was amazing. We recommend booking do avoid disappointment!

Was part of a large group, +30, we pre-ordered to assist the kitchen. Good menu options with several house specials. A wide variety of starters, mains, rice, nan breads etc. were served all hot with the sizzles sizzling. Feedback from the group was all positive and we certainly enjoyed our meals. Staff were attentive, but not overly so, and did a great job serving the food and meeting the drinks orders. Will definitely be back!

Really impressed with 1953 in Galashiels. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel right at home—super friendly and just the right amount of attentive. The food was absolutely spot on. You can tell it’s made fresh, and every dish had that “wow, this is good” moment. It’s not often you get great food and great service in the same place, but they’ve nailed it here. Left feeling full, happy, and already talking about when we’ll come back.

Service was nice and fast. The food was nice. But... The portion size versus the price was the downside. One non alcoholic drink, chicken starter (very small), rice, chicken dish, and a chapati, and the extremely small piece of ice cream cost around £35. And I was left still feeling a bit hungry.

Takeaway for delivery bought for first time from here, it was cold and delivery man rang and asked me to wait outside house, but waited an age on doorstep. Excellent flavours but had to use my imagination as to what might have been if it was hot. Can't get the basics right, and not authentic Nepalese, and won't use again.very disappointed.

We have been to the 1953 a couple of times already and were never disappointed. Very friendly and welcoming staff, an extensive menu with options to please every taste, excellent food quality, all in a lovely cosy atmosphere! Worth a visit every time! Since the place is usually quite busy, booking a table is absolutely recommended to avoid disappointment.

Just got back from Christmas Day meal... it was absolutely delicious... the staff are wonderful and attentive... we found the portion sizes perfect... just enough to fill you up without feeling stuffed and there's minimal waste... nice touch when we were leaving, were given a bottle of wine and decent mug... thanks to you all for making our xmas easygoing.... 👍

My wife and I stumbled on the 1953 whilst in Galashiels to see Hamish Hawk at MacArts. Since then we have made several trips to eat there, last one this evening. Absolutely love the food, and the staff are wonderful. I cannot recommend them highly enough, well worth the journey.
