On the Grid : 2 Willow Road

"Erno Goldfinger designed this magnificent Modernist home for him and his family in 1939, which has been beautifully preserved along with his belongings, furniture - much of it designed by himself - and collection of modern art including pieces by Henry Moore, Max Ernst and Bridget Riley. Wonderful architectural details appear throughout like the paint colours chosen to highlight different materials, the beautiful spiral staircase and the wooden partition wall that can be folded away to create a large communal area for social occasions. Unlike us, writer and Hampstead resident Ian Fleming apparently wasn’t a fan and is said to have taken inspiration from Goldfinger’s surname for his James Bond villain." - Chrissie Macdonald & Andrew Rae

I’m a huge fan of both modernist architecture and James Bond, so this visit truly exceeded my expectations. It was an absolute delight from start to finish. The staff were exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable—you could tell they genuinely love what they do. From the warm welcome to the informative introduction and short film before the tour, everything was well-organized and engaging. Being able to freely explore the house at my own pace was a highlight, and the staff stationed throughout were always happy to answer any questions. The entire experience was both immersive and inspiring. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and would love to do it again soon!

A must for those intererested in mid-century archictecture and decor. Friendly, engaging and very knowledgeable National Trust volunteers.

I know nothing about architecture or design. Visited because I am a NT member and I wanted to leave the tour having learnt something. On that basis this is a 5/5 tour. The tour guide was superb, full of knowledge, but presented in a way that got the group to think about the house and its design. The guide was an absolute superstar! The house itself was full of unique design features. Wouldn't say all of them would work for me, but this isn't about me, it is about Goldfinger and how he interacted with the world. The tour gave us brilliant insight into his thought process, how he perceived the world and a little about his lifestyle. Overall, a superb tour, and yes, I left this tour having learnt a lot.

Guided tour was very informative. Incredible to see a house stopped in time.

Interesting house full of art and memories. Must book in advance. Hampstead Heath is on the doorstep for a walk. Public loos and cafes in Hampstead 6 mins walk away.

This was the self built Modernist home of Erno Goldfinger's which he built just before the war. He was famous as a Brutalist Architect. Whilst he built the whole house, it is actually a row of three and the outer two were separate and still are (only the middle house is owned by the National Trust). The house inside is just as it was left as it has only had one owner. The house is generally visited by guided tour although I think there are more free form visits too,

If you have any interest in Modernist Style and Architecture then this private house is a "must". It's a family home filled with modernist art, and details of the family who lived here for 50 years, Nothing short of fascinating. Wonderful 1 hour guided tour, book on advance recommended.

Designed and lived in my the architect Erno Goldfinger, this 1930's modernist building was ahead of it's time in design style. The quirky interior furnishing and art work have been left frozen in time, everything as would have been when the family lived here. The house is only accessible by organised tour at 11.00am, 12.00 noon, 1.00pm and 2.00pm during opening times, but can be independently viewed between 3.00 and 5.00pm. A 15 minute video provides a good introduction, the tour of the house then follows and can be upto an hour. The tour guide was very passionate and strident in her views of Erno's architecture and collections. Not photographs allowed inside and no facilities eg toilet, Caffè or disabled access. Good to combine a visit here with Fenton House (17th Century Property Nearby) as a complete contrast in architecture and furnishings.

Owned by the National Trust and built on the site of some old farm labourer's cottages, 2 Willow Road is the homelier side of architectural brutalism. When it was built it sparked controversy, but today it looks in keeping with the rest of Willow Road. Inside is a well-designed, comfortable living space which was arranged for the parties the Goldfingers used to throw. There is a film showing the history of the site and the lifestyle of the family who lived here. The furniture was specially designed and includes a wonderful desk. The only part of the plot which the Goldfingers weren't bothered for is the garden - so most of this land was given over to the neighbours. Opening times are irregular, so worth checking before visiting.

Interested in quirky architecture or modern art? Want to go somewhere different in London? Off the beaten track? This is the place! Designed by Erno Goldfinger (not the chap in the Bond film!), it's a house he built for his family in 1939 (opposite Hampstead Heath) Full of fascinating period pieces like sculptures by Moore and Ernst. There's art by Ben Nicholson and Bridgit Riley and others. It's now owned by the National Trust, so if you're a member why not make a day of it and check out nearby Fenton House too? (nb they don't have a public loo, so find somewhere to 'go' first!)
