Yelp
This place is always a vibe! Small, but mighty! This is always on my list of places to stop by when in Harlem! It never, never disappoints. And yes, have not tried a drink I didn't like. Next time you are in Harlem, it's a must try! I promise it will not disappoint.

Yelp
Intimate vibe, jungle-esc decor, unique, and complex cocktails. A sexy spot to end the night or just feel like the main character in your life for once. They do an artful job of making a small space seem like you have a lot of seating options and are private away from others. They also have a covered outdoor area, but it lacks the charm you find inside the bar. Reservations recommended, especially for more than 2 people. We sat at the bar and were able to watch the bartender create our drinks and as it was a but slower, and later that night, explained each element which was a cool experience. Overall great service, felt very welcome and guided on further drink choices based on what we liked. They do have mocktails as well. Definitely a favorite spot uptown!

Yelp
Came here and was seated pretty quickly. A reservation is necessary if you want to guarantee yourself a table. The inside is warm, lots of blue and ambient lighting. I ordered BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA. This drink is was fruity, herby, spicy, and flowery. It was so good I did not order anything else. This place is quaint, cozy, and loud. It's not a great first date place.

Yelp
Nice dark little upscale bar in Harlem. They're really about specialty cocktails so your own personal signature drink might not be the move. For example, they make no espresso martinis and had no Hendricks gin when we went. Ambience is nice and staff are great and professional. Prices are high but that's NYC!

Yelp
We got here in time for one drink. The drink was good. I need to come back and try several more to actually have a feel for their cocktails. However the ambience is almost like a speak easy which is great!!! If you wish to be discreet and have a great place to catch up with a friend this is the spot. Keke was cool and friendly.

Yelp
I made a reservation at Sugar Monk to meet with a colleague. I ordered a shiitake mushroom infused gin martini and I can honestly say that's one of the best drinks I've had in a very long time. The vibe was cool and the service was fine. But that drink alone was worth the hour long trip from Brooklyn. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
We stopped by for drinks after dinner- I had the Over the Volcano drink and my friend had the martini. My drink was absolutely delicious- sweet and tart but not overwhelming in either taste. The bathroom was also a pleasurable experience as well- it was low-lit, clean and smelled amazing.

Yelp
This was a great experience ! The boyfriend and I stopped by for date night and we loved it. Amazing vibe & atmosphere! The cocktails were perfectly crafted by our bartender, Caesar (hope I got his name right!, gentleman with braids). Very unique They have a great selection of cocktails and the story telling made the cocktail experience even better! We'll be back to try out the food! They have a 20% gratuity added to the bill.
google avatar

Yelp
Very cute spot, the kind of place where you can talk without yelling which is nice. Drinks were good. Automatic 20% gratuity added which I haven't really seen before at bars but all good. Would return next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Yelp
A-yooooo. Solo trip. Dropped by to start the night off. I'm going to keep 100. I had The Queen of the Desert. Perfecto!!! The vibe, drinks and service tonight was 5 out of 5. Cheers!

Yelp
This place gets better and better every time I go! I'm particularly dazzled by the customer service (above and beyond) and the amount of effort that went into these curated cocktails is MIND BLOWING! This go round my table decided to get the Truffle Popcorn. It was light, perfectly seasoned and a great addition to my cocktail. Talking about cocktails... I've been in this gin kick and decided to get the Ugly Beauty. Sugar Monk did a great job at taking this floral liquor and added warm additions that made this one the best things I've ever had in life. That being said I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Had a wonderful evening here; this is a great date night spot! Sugar Monk is pretty easy to find--Google Maps took us directly here, where we followed the directions to the entrance and rang the doorbell. Within 30 seconds, the door opened and we were led to our table. The ambience is great. Dark, candlelit, and cozy. The chairs were comfortable and I appreciated that they had coat racks! We enjoyed looking through the online menu at the many options for cocktails. I love when menus show what glass cocktails come in. I ordered the Billy Budd cocktail and enjoyed it! I had a view of the bar, so it was cool seeing the bartender put together the drinks / add the garnishes. Would definitely return if I am in the area again!

Yelp
- the entrance is indiscreet - very romantic and a great date spot - drinks are expensive ($22 original price plus $4 auto gratuity) - everything is delicious - good service

Yelp
Our final birthday stop of the day. We sat at the bar. It's very dimly lit with a few candles hither and thither. There are goat hooks for bags and coats under the bar (yes I mean goat). I played it safe with a pear tree and Pablo had a Ugazu - served in a bowl, the strega /sodju combo pulled him in. Both cocktails were well crafted and the alchemists were pleasant and enthusiastic. The cocktail list is extensive and creative and it's a question of taste and your own imagination as to what you will pick. The building is small and unmarked and you ring a bell to enter, the hostess was very pleasant and welcoming. We did not really feel any "vibe" but it was a quiet midweek night. It was a young crowd and we were significantly older - though I thought our parkas were quite trendy.

Yelp
One of the best cocktail bars uptown. The drinks are awesome, and the truffle popcorn is a fantastic addition to satiate your palate in the interim. The ambiance is stylish and inviting, making it the perfect place for a night out. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, enhancing the overall experience

Yelp
This place is an interesting cocktail bar (like hello, you couldn't tell by the name?!?) but honestly, I am here for it. Sugar Monk is like fancy cocktail bar with a side of woo woo, you know. Loves: + You walk inside and already feel like there's incense in the air, bc THERE IS + Drinks are spectacular (Note: If you want to extra like my friend and I, order the "Marie Laveau" and "Grateful Matador"... the former had smoke and the latter had fire) + My drink had palo santo on it which again, a bit woo woo but I liked it + Really lovely service from our host and servre + Really nice outdoor space if you can get a side seat vs. somewhere in the middle The other things I would add here are: 1) tip is already included so expect each cocktail to be $27ish when all is said and done, and 2) most seats are fine but some like the middle tables outside can feel a bit tight. All in all, we had a good night out here and loved our drinks and the whole experience. Keep it up, Sugar Monk! :)

Yelp
I've been to Sugar Monk before when they first had opened, and I recently went for my birthday after my homegirl took me out for my birthday. I'm never disappointed with sugar Monk ever!! The drinks are one of the best drinks you could ever have, because it's handcrafted and special made by legit curated bartenders. I might as well just call them elite bartenders. Every drink, every emphasis on the glass of a drink is very detailed. I'm an old-fashioned girl and the way they make their drinks with a smoky machine and give you that smoky flavor of a cocktail is beyond words. Their tapas are really good . The decor is very intimate, I would recommend this as a date night or a meet up with your friends. It is small, but very intimate... It is a speakeasy, so you may just walk past something, and may not even realize it because it's like a black covered front it's not visible too much, but once you find it, you'll be very happy with how it looks inside. Our waitress was amazing. She recommended some of their popular drinks. The tapas were very fulfilling, I had the dumplings which were really really good like I said this is an amazing place to have avery cute date night, or a link up with your closest friends. Also, the music is very very good jazz, such a great vibe. I can't wait to go back there. I heard they open a new spot as well. I'm going to check that one out too, but never disappoints. Thank you for the phenomenal service. See you soon!!

Yelp
Cool ambiance, unique and fab cocktails and tasty light bites. Indoor and outdoor seating. Reservations preferred.

Yelp
I've had Sugar Monk on my radar since pre Covid. I finally got a chance to visit and it was soooo worth the wait! The ambience, the vibes, the music, the bartenders.... Everything was so enjoyable!! These bartenders are truly gifted. Just watching them make drinks had me in awe. I made reservations via Resy for 11pm on a Saturday night. We were immediately greeted and given the choice between indoor or outdoor seating. We went with indoor.... WOW... the textiles, color scheme = totally gorg inside!!! I knew the cocktails would wow just from watching the bartender make it. I started with a Queen Of The Desert which was sooo good. If you're a tequila lover this is the drink for. Perfectly balanced with a nice kick. We also had an order of the truffle popcorn (YUM). Sugar Monk is now my go to "let's grab a drink" spot. I can't wait to return!

Yelp
Pretty cozy cocktail bar in Harlem. Would recommend a reservation but they do have some outside covered seating that isn't as nice. The cocktails themself were interesting. Lots of layered flavors.

Yelp
What a delight to pop in, since Sugar Monk is right next door to Aloft. Decor and very accommodating staff made for a lovely evening with new friends. Perfect spot to tell stories and laugh. Reading the menu is its own adventure, and I enjoyed my mezcal cocktail. Cheeseboard was decent. Will definitely be visiting again.

Yelp
Sugar Monk's vibe is so dark and sexy, it should be called Idris Elba. We managed to snag lots of happy hour drinks (5-7pm), and the Billy Budd was by far the best, with its warm spices. The Queen of the Desert tastes like any other margarita-like drink (fruity, tart), and the William Blake is strong enough to have you seeing stars--like Idris Elba. See what I did there?

Yelp
Found this spot on yelp . Honestly the ambiance is so cute and it's just such a nice vibe . Perfect for a date night or low key drinks

Yelp
Such a cute hidden gem! It's totally hidden away and you have to ring a doorbell to get in. The space is very cute and cozy. Tucked away and kind of dark. The drinks were fantastic. I'm not sure if you can go wrong because all of the ingredients are so exotic and cool. Ask your waitress or bartender for a recommendation and they'll almost certainly give you a good one!

Yelp
The perfect special occasion, first date, impress out of towner spot in Harlem. The green velvet chairs and dark green walls inside are so sexy and the covered outdoor seating is equally stunning. I really appreciate how they breakdown the different flavors of all their drinks (including mocktails), so you know you'll like what you order. My recent favorite is the Ugetsu. You don't see many places making soju cocktails, and this one was unique and refreshing. Worth every penny.

Yelp
Incredible cocktails, you have to buzz to get in and the madame is lovely. I really would love to return- cocktails before seeing THE BLACKENING at Magic Johnson's AMC at 125th! Awesome. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
Delicious & Different cocktails! This place had an excellent attention to detail, perfect lighting and a happy hour! The service team was friendly and informative as well.

Aelise N.

Yelp
Love the ambiance and great service however gratuity is automatically included at 22% so one drink ran me $25. No mixed alcoholic beverage is worth $25 with an oz of liquor in it. No thank you

Yelp
Everything its just Amazing the drinks all of them brings a new story ,And the ambience its really nice. We love smell of this place keeps you calm and comfortable our server she was Amazing

Chris B.

Yelp
It certainly was an experience, the overall decor and vibe of the place is very chill and relaxed. The presentation of the drinks range from mysterious to extravagant, which is honestly selling it short. Definitely needs to be experienced in person. Not the spot for food as the menu is more lil apps to tease or munch on. That being said, awesome after spot from dinner or work

Yelp
Beautiful place Indoor and outdoor seating Great ambiance and vibes Definitely a speakeasy vibes for sure Amazing staff Happy hour is from 5p-7p Tiny but memorable Parking in the area isn't too bad Our favorite drink so far is the Queen of the desert Will try most drinks and report back Reservations are a must The black truffle popcorn is delish but there needs to be more. I would give 5 stars but we would like to see more on the food menu. Will return soon to try more drinks and for a great time.

Yelp
My date and I arrived in the neighborhood early for our reservation at Red Rooster and decided to check this place out a few blocks away for a quick pre dinner drink. Ended up staying for 2 rounds it was so good! On a Tuesday around 7pm the place was maybe a third filled with people, with more coming in the longer we sat. The cocktails were really delicious, the best being the Billy bud (I believe). It had a subtle sweetness, with acidity, and fresh/bright. So friggin good! Also tried the highball, Queen of the desert, and a mezcal cocktail. Everything was expertly made, impressive, and delicious. Definitely a bit of a pricey drink spot, though you do get what you pay for (in a good way). 20% tip is included on the bill.

Yelp
This is an upscale cocktail bar in the heart of Harlem. It used to be a bit of a hidden gem, but it is now quite popular and trendy. The entrance used to be very unassuming. I don't think they had a sign, just a script logo with the initials "SM." Now they have outdoor sidewalk seating in an enclosed tent so the storm door entrance is much easier to spot. The main bar is very small. They only have 5 or 6 tables. It's very dark and mostly lit by candle light. Because of the moody, mysterious, romantic feel, I would almost recommend it for date night. However, when I went most recently, the music was very loud so it might not be ideal if you are trying to have an intimate conversation. Their cocktail list is top notch. Most drinks are $17 or $18, but that's not uncommon for NYC. Back in the day, they had detailed descriptions of each drink and the menu told a story. Now in the pandemic age, they have a sleek QSR digital menu. The cocktails are organized around themes. Each drink ingredient is thoughtfully categorized. I had two cocktails. The Queen of the Desert was very tangy and citrusy. Although it had habanero, it was not very spicy. The cucumber garnish was a nice complement. I also tried the Billy Budd. This is a drink for ginger fans. Even though I don't usually like ginger, I still loved it. It had just the right amount of sweetness and the cinnamon and allspice added perfect flavor. The ginger candy garnish was also delicious. Though drinks are the main attraction, they also serve light bites but I've yet to try the food menu. Given the limited seating, I recommend making a reservation. It's definitely worth visiting for a speakeasy-esque cocktail experience.

Yelp
This place has mastered the art of mixing drinks. They have an ample list of drinks. Thelonious was by far my favorite, well balanced. Vibe was perfect; intimate, speakeasy like. Perfect for a date. Service was excellent.

Yelp
Excellent cocktails and a very cool speakeasy vibe with attentive service. I've always enjoyed my drinks and the experience. Sugar Monk is a go-to in Harlem for good drinks and great vibes.

Yelp
The drinks here are AMAZING! The atmosphere is full of light smoky essence (because of the drinks that require flame) but it's not overbearing. The drinks are strong so it's not for the weak! But they are beautifully crafted and tasty. I've only been once but have been telling everyone about this place. The ambiance is sexy, social, yet intimate. The lights are rather dim which makes the vibe even more appealing. You have to ring the bell the get in - gives the feel of exclusivity.

Yelp

Yelp
This location was a treat as a native New Yorker. Located in the heart of Harlem it's everything extraordinary when you're inside. I suggest sitting at the bar if it's a small party or having reservations if it's a large group. The hostess was AMAZING she was very tentative to my needs. The bar tender was quick with our order and that's exactly what I needed. Parking is tough but it's the city, walk

Yelp
The best Negroni I've ever had. Loved the herbal after taste. Oh and the venue, a beauty. Would come back.

James R.

Yelp
The cocktails are as tasty as they are an experience. They have cocktails for each mood. The flavors are uniquely sugar monk. The warm, sensual decadence of the bar only enhances the taste.
google avatar

Danielle D.

Yelp
This is the cutest find. So unassuming from the outside but once you enter you quickly get sucked into the chic decor. The details make this intimate place very welcoming. The drinks were clean, nicely balanced and refreshing. And the bites were the perfect treat to snack on - we tried the octopus, truffle popcorn and chicken empanadas
google avatar

Yelp
Reasons why I enjoy this establishment... . Dim Lighting . Great for a date night . Interesting and delicious drink menu . Beautiful ambiance . Intimate setting . Friendly mixologist . Great service and the list goes on and on... I'm a fan of this speakeasy!!! A great addition to the Harlem community!!!
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
What a fun and unique place! I'm not usually a cocktail girl but the spicy margaritas Antoinette made us were exceptional. The truffle popcorn is unforgettable. And the ambiance and velvet seating wrap it all up in a bow. We went on Halloween (great choice) and really loved the live music, too!
google avatar

Jaleesa S.

Yelp
Wow! Normally being wowed at a place is a good thing but that's not the case here. More like wow I'm in disbelief this really happening Let's start with the drinks! We got the Tehuana, Daphne Old Fashioned and William Blake All were very boozy but lacked balance in their flavor profile. A solid 3 out 5 stars ..but at $22 a pop and an advertised speakasy I'd like to see them knock it out of the park So why the 1 star?!? They literally had us choking, like literally eye watering choking. Apparently they have a drink on the menu that requires them to light a chili pepper on fire; the space is small and not well ventilated so my entire table, several tables near us AND THE SERVERS all start coughing. We had to stop our conversation for a solid 5 mins to allow the fumes to dissipate because the fumes would get in our mouths while talking and cause further irritation. Our server acknowledged all the coughing and said "yeah its the smoke from the chili peppers".. If you have a drink on your menu that causes all your patrons to cough and causes eye irritation you gotta remove it from your menu. Nice ambiance and decor but 1 star for not taking the well being of your guests into account. I would never go back
google avatar

Yelp
Cute Harlem speakeasy with great drinks, service, and food. Try the Pear Tree cocktail and the Moussaka (if you're hungry). They also make a bomb Negroni if that's your thing.

Yelp
This has to be one of the best bars in Harlem!!! This spot is truly a vibe with excellent cocktails and good company. I'll be back here every time I return to NYC. Great customer service all around!

Yelp
Fabulous service, ambiance and drinks. This is our favorite bar so far in NYC. This is a hidden gem in Harlem.

Yelp
Sugar Monk was fantastic. Excellent vibe and service, and they take larger reservations, which was great for my party of 5. I tried a bunch of drinks including the Ruby my dear, Marie laveau, Round midnight and Oblivion. The Ruby my dear and round midnight were particularly amazing. Taramasalata was also great, maybe a little salty but a good snack. Wonderful addition to the area!
