Booked a two-night weekend break for my wife's birthday, and wanted a hotel near enough to the rail station, and the city centre, but without being too corporate, or too noisy. Found 24 Royal Terrace, and on arrival was delighted. A very friendly welcome awaited, and our second floor room was gorgeous (there are no ground floor rooms and there's no lift). |The hotel has a colourful and eclectic art collection adorning the walls, and is also a destination for whisky afficionados. The resident expert, Tony, will tutor you through a tasting, or simply impart his encyclopaedic knowledge of world whisky to you if you want guidance. I was fortunate enough to partake of a 1963 Glenmorangie which was their whisky of the week - I couldn't resist it! Oh my, what a treat - it was such a nuanced and complex dram, with vanilla, caramel, sherry, and myriad other flavours, with a hugely long finish. It will live long in the memory - just a shame a bottle is c.£2,000!|The room was beautifully appointed and decorated, with a huge, very comfortable, king sized bed, free-standing bath with dividing screen, and an ensuite shower and WC. Ample wardrobe and storage space, dressing table, and a wall mounted TV. There's a pay-minibar, plus complimentary still and sparkling water, good wifi, and a Dyson fan. The breakfast is extensive and plentiful, and there's a lovely rear garden. The hotel is in a quiet cul-de-sac in an historic Georgian terrace in the lee of Calton Hill. A lovely spot near enough to the centre. A great find, and a very enjoyable stay.
