Yelp
Smothered pork chops, yams. If you get these you will be unable to resist them the next time. I tried. Get two of the cakes for dessert to go with the two full meals you will get. Please set up a franchise in the old Luby's on NASA Parkway so I can eat your food every day.

Yelp
This is It Soul Food is definitely missing something to make it worth a trip. It has a lot of hype so was definitely excited to try it but I was quickly disappointed with service and the food. A group of us tried ordering online it wasn't working quite right and they forgot to turn off the things they were out of. We tried again to order over the phone but that didn't work either so we decided to take drive and order in person. It's a cafeteria style set up. You can see the foods that you are choosing. Between my friend group we tried the fried chicken and smothered chicken both I could do without. Their sides are pretty decent for the ones they did have. Apparently the Mac and cheese must be good because that's what they were out of. Overall wasn't really impressed, don't see a need to return if I'm back in town.

Yelp
The staff was great it was our 1st time there visiting from Austin. I got the Oxtails with rice Mac & cheese candid yams. My taste buds are very southern even though I'm from the Midwest. But the food was good. I was also complimented on my cologne. By the way it's ( CALLED ODYSSEY )

Yelp
I came here while I was working in the area. I ordered online and went in to pick it up. It was ready, and packaged with everything I need but there was a small hiccup with pickup. The lady giving me the food was adamant that I confirm the order, which my phone was not allowing me to do. So she wouldn't let me take the food although it was paid online and she could see the order on my phone. A different lady came over and explained it to her, but I have to say, this is not the friendliest group of people. In fact, when I walked in, I saw someone that I knew and was talking for literally 30 seconds and this same lady that wanted me to confirm the order came from behind the counter and interrupted my brief convo to see if I had an online order. Like why would you need to do that?! It was rude and awkward. Now the food. I got the fried chicken plate with green beans and Mac and cheese. Was I impressed? Hell nah. The chicken was cooked well, but not seasoned to perfection like I was expecting. The Mac and cheese was bland to be honest, not a speck of pepper in sight. Green beans were gross in my opinion, tasted like canned ones to me. The little cornbread muffins were cool, nice addition. I also got a big red kool- aid which was fine. Maybe their other dishes are better, but based on this particular meal, I wouldn't go back for that - especially at $17.

Yelp
My husband and I tried out This is It Soul Food from the Humble location! Starting with the variety of authentic soul food options all the way up to phenomenal service Brandon provided! This spot gets 5/5 stars!!! Also if you're looking for a stiff drink that'll have you feeling right don't skip out on the daquiris! Trust me, you'll thank me later!

Yelp
Yes, yes, and YES!!! This is it! I have been searching for great soul food in Houston since I'm not originally from here. I was invited after church to come have a great meal, and boy, was it ever. The cafeteria style service was excellent. It was hard to decide what main entree to order, so now I have to go back and try more. I ended up with smothered pork chops, candied yams, greens, and rice with gravy. The desserts were just as varied, and I'm a sucker for peach cobbler! All in all, the portions are definitely sufficient. I didn't think I would finish my food and one sitting, and now I'm in a food coma. It's probably going to be one of my regular spots!!! Oh and they have a daily special for college students for 10 bucks too!!!! Gotta show ID.

Yelp
Stopped by for some tea cookies x for my mom and catfish. I enjoyed that there was not wait and the staff was very kind. The tea cookies were fresh and the catfish was hot and fresh also. I enjoyed that I was able to buy fish alone and that the restaurant was open past 7:30pm. I will return again,

Yelp
The catfish was cold. The green beans were delicious. The server appeared to be having a bad day. But the cashier was phenomenal!

Yelp
Food wasn't great, but to be fair, it was late. The ambiance was unpleasant. I can't fully explain it. It's a local restaurant, but it doesn't feel welcoming. It's buffet style with staff who weren't very attentive. I won't be coming back.

Yelp
No thank you... the food itself just looks unappealing- I did try the yams and cake ...both were a no for me. I've passed up this restaurant a few times in the past- and should have did the same this go round.

Yelp
A huge plus about this restaurant is that they don't put pork in EVERYTHING. You are able to enjoy cabbage, green beans, pinto beans and greens made with turkey not pork so two of the 5 of us were able to enjoy veggies. We ordered oxtails, fried catfish, fried chicken, mac&cheese, candied sweet potatoes, white rice and banana pudding. We are self professed food snobs because we all cook really well but we enjoy eating out. We were given a very generous portion of the oxtails which were cooked very well. They were very tender and had plenty of gravy. Basic gravy, not over salted thank goodness. I had read a review that they were bland but that was not our experience. The fried catfish could have been fried in my kitchen cause it was finger licking good. Well seasoned, not over salted with just the right crunch. The fried chicken was basic. Sides were good, service was good although the cashier didn't know about Yelp and my freed drink. She didn't want to honor it when I showed it to her in my phone but in the end another lady came from behind the counter with my free soda . What I liked the best? Good food and NOT over salted. Great job guys!!

Yelp
I've been wanting to come here for the longest. I've heard so much about this place but I just happened to come upon it while searching for the food hall and found it. I ordered the bbq ribs with yams, cabbage and Mac n cheese and of course a slice of butter pecan cake. The Mac n cheese was wonderful. The cabbage was good and the yams were ok. The ribs tasted like they had been frozen for awhile but they were tender and slathered with plenty of bbq sauce. The catfish was seasoned well and the pintos were ok. I would recommend coming to try it out. They do have daily specials. College students get a discount with ID. The service was good and quick. Nice ambiance with music playing. They keep this place clean. I will be back to try something different.

Yelp
This is a very yummy restaurant, super nice and friendly staff!!! The ambiance is very warm and casual. You can bring your family here. We all had the oxtails, collard greens, mac n cheese and candied yams. My boyfriend loved their black eyed peas. The cornbread was off the chain!!! We come here from Los Angeles, California. It's a must experience and try the dranks, slushy!

Yelp
This place is so good I once drove there one morning from Dallas just to have lunch with my family. After hanging out with my family for a couple of hours there I drove back to Dallas. The wood has been great for decades. I do miss the old neighborhood and the people that lived in the area. I always get a great meal and blessing when here. It's not just the food but the tag have always made me feel like family. They did give me a great to go package for the ride back to Dallas. #jesus #love #family #texas

Yelp
Beyoncé was definitely right, this is by far the best soul food joint in Houston. Lol got my food to go At around 1 PM and I am just now waking up to review at 6:00 PM.. The location is located in Third ward.. Inside there is plenty of seating, with a daiquiri machine if you are a drinker. It's a good spot to come alone or with a group. The service is always great when I go. As far as parking goes, they have there own parking so that is not an issue. The food was very good m, well seasoned and has a home made feel to it. I ordered the ham hocks with macaroni, rice and candied yams. I would say I was not a fan of the macaroni, it was watery and had a crafty taste to it, not like the baked soul food macaroni I am used to. But other then that there are still other sides that I am sure will be great. 5 stars from me for sure !! Definitely check out ThisIsIt soul food if your ever in Third Ward!! You won't be disappointed
google avatar

Yelp
I came here on Sunday just before lunch time and there were not many people in there. I ordered the ham hock with candies yams and it was good. Huge portion too. Servers were friendly. It was pretty good priced too and they have college deals everyday. Food 8/10 Service 7.5/10 Ambience 7.5/10 Price 7.5/10

Yelp
Hi, Thank you to this is is for putting love in the food I so scrumptiously devoured. I know we all have our days, so I'll keep returning as long as you promise to keep loving what you do! Thanks!

Yelp
We traveled to Houston from VA on a foodie tour and ran into this place decided to stop by and give it a try ... first of all the lady at the register was rude af , the food was bland , cornbread was meh, strawberry daiquiri was trash , thank god I didn't spend $31 on their oxtails .. I can't Imagine what that taste like ‍ I'm sorry but this place WAS NOT IT ! Cant always believe reviews on Tic Tok ‍

Yelp
Ordered Grubhub. All together $50. Was visiting Houston from Minnesota. I ordered the oxtails, cabbage, sweet potatoes, and white rice with gravy. They were stingy AS HELL with the gravy. Rice was just dry as heck. Oxtails? Not seasoned good enough. Tasted like oil, and meat. Cabbage? Tasted dirty. I hate to say it, but it did. It wasn't even well seasoned. They definitely should've sent more salt with the meal. Best part was the sweet potatoes. Very well seasoned. Tasted like my mamas sweet potatoes pie. They get a E for effort.

Yelp
I loved the service , food and atmosphere was really great for family, couples or groups.

Yelp
Houston's This Is It soul food restaurant located in the shadows of Texas? Southern University is a staple of the community for more than 60 years. I must admit. I've been enjoying the delicious meals for 40 of those 60 years. What I can say is the quality of the food in terms of selection, seasoning, freshness, and portions haven't changed that entire time. in recent years, they added a daiquiri machine and maybe a television but for the most part in their current location you can still select ox tails, turkey,l wings, fried fish, collards, mac & cheese, black eyed peas, etc. has maintain a level of quality for a very long time. I might add that I feel people of all ethnicities and all races could come here enjoy a meal and I feel very comfortable going in and out of the restaurant and in the restaurant itself.

Yelp
This Is It restaurant was Great! The food was awesome, the service was wondering, Big up's Tasha and the rest of the staff setting was nice Mills from The Sunshine State

Yelp
This is a cafeteria-style restaurant with traditional soul food. I'm not a fan of fried or smothered dishes, so I chose the baked chicken and my daughter had the meatloaf. My husband went with the pork chops. You get your choice of 3 sides, so together we had the Mac & cheese, cabbage, pinto beans, mashed potatoes and green beans. The sides were better than the entrees, which lacked seasoning. The meats were bland and needed at least salt & pepper if not garlic or season salt. Overall it wasn't bad but we weren't thrilled with the meal for $60. Service was great and the dining room is well attended.
google avatar

Sidney L.

Yelp
The food is the best soul food in Houston. The place is always clean. You can see the attention to detail. I always eat there, best to have the food hot and fresh. The service is off the hook, lot's of joking and fun. Once you sit done they don't forget you. Tasha comes out constantly to make sure your every need is taken care of. The prices are reasonable too!!!

Yelp
Yelp only lists their Blodgett location, but they've opened a new one in Humble, FM1960 at Townsen...that's where we went. I'm going to give you an honest, no BS opinion here, based upon my reflections and observations. The restaurant occupies a large space, that at one time housed a piano bar; they've kept the performance stage, in the back of the dining space. I'm not sure if they use it or not. They serve cafeteria style, so you can save a bit on tips. I initially thought that the prices were a little stiff, at least for daily dining. At $18 a meal, its not in my affordable daily dining range, which typically tops at about $10. That is, until you see the serving size. My gods, it was enormous! My wife and I had plenty for the two of us, and took home enough for a third meal! Given that, it came down to about $6 a meal, which is a steal! So I want to commend them for great value! The food was displayed behind glass (thank you) on a steam table. Most of it looked really good. We were there around 6:30pm on a Saturday, and the meatloaf looked a bit dried out. The ribs looked kinda sparse--they were obviously what were left. We ordered the delicious-looking smothered pork chops, yams, mashed potatoes, and mac'n cheese. These turned out to be tremendously yummy, and they came with a couple pieces of cornbread, to boot. TIISF thoughtfully places to-go containers and bags in the dining area, making it unnecessary to return to the serving line to get them. A final note: the young man behind the counter serving up the food was very pleasant and personable, and even threw in an extra pork chop (I hope that does not get him into trouble...it truly served to cement a good impression I had of the place.) Food: 5 stars Service: 5 stars Ambiance: 3 stars I recommend all of my Humble, Kingwood, Spring, and Atascocita neighbors give this place a try...you will not be sorry.

Yelp
I've been going to this restaurant for years and they have great food! The reason I am giving 3 stars is because they are never consistent. When the food is good, it's very good, but when it isn't, it blows my mind that the food is from the same place. For instance, I love their mac & cheese on a good day, but many times i've also had it when it's either extremely dry, bland or watery. I enjoy their smothered chicken as most of the times i've gotten it, it has been tasty. I want to give a higher rating but I believe the food consistency can be worked on.

Yelp
Very nice hospitality, ambience, food and service was awesome. This was a few of our first time visiting Houston. Would recommend this place. I had some other pork chops and mashed potatoes and green beans. Everything was really good. Will definitely be back on the next visit to Houston. Thank you, Houston!

Michael J.

Yelp
I was disappointed with the food here. I was expecting more flavor from a soul food meal (smothered chicken, cabbage, yams, and rice & gravy). The service was good, but the food was not worth the price. I would not recommend this restaurant to others.
google avatar

Towanna S.

Yelp
Food was really good and staff friendly. Real soul food made with love. Place was comfortable and casual.

Will S.

Yelp
Overrated... everything lacked flavor. The iced tea earned them an additional star, and the pie was moist. The pork cutlets were extremely dry, and the rice was mushy... unfortunately, this can't be the top soul food in Houston.
google avatar

Gwen S.

Yelp
Succulent real southern food made just like my mama's! If your in H-Town go hit you sum!
google avatar

Kashara B.

Yelp
In my opinion. They should just stick to soul food. The strawberry cake was amazing. The sweet potato pie needed some work. Their gumbo had a lot of chicken bones in it. I was shocked! I wish they would've had more shrimp and sausage in it. I love their hospitality!
google avatar

Amari M.

Yelp
My first time In Houston, and I was told to try this restaurant. Baby everything was delicious, the people were friendly, very clean. Hands down the best fried chicken I've had in a long time. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Kristin A.

Yelp
I'd been hearing great things about this place since moving south so I was more than excited to try it out. I wanted it on a busy Sunday so I decided to order online. Definitely a bonus since I fully expected the line to be out of the door upon arrival. Now in my soul food pickup life experience, I figured it still wouldn't be ready when I arrived despite being given a pickup time. Boy was I wrong. Not only was it ready, it was stored in a pickup locker where I used a code to grab my order. I didn't even have to get in line or interact with staff. Awesome and efficient because line was indeed out of the door. That's pretty much where my excitement ends because I wasn't impressed with the meal, sadly. I ordered the fried catfish plate with Mac n cheese, greens, black eyed peas and cornbread. The fish was fried too hard so it just tasted fried and lacked flavor. Also they weren't full filets like I expected. They looked like filets cut in half which made it draw up more while being fried. The mac n cheese was soupy and had a powdered cheese flavor so I couldn't eat it. The black eyed peas were the best things in the order - with a little hot sauce. The greens were okay but a pinch salty and the cornbread was old and hard. Given the results, it wasn't worth the money spent. I was expecting so much more.

Yelp
I have heard lots about this place and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! It was my first visit there and I was welcomed upon entry. The staff provided good customer service! I placed my order and took it to go. When I made it home it was fresh and tasted wonderful! I will definitely return!
google avatar

Ashleigh B.

Yelp
I'm just going to be honest. I was very excited to come here, but this was not it at all. Before I walked in I was already anticipating the smell of soul food. Unfortunately that was not what I smelled instead I was hit with a very interesting smell of cleaning products mixed with some other weird old smell. I wasn't going to let that deter me from getting the food I came for. I ordered the oxtail plate that comes with rice , I got gravy on my rice, mac & cheese cabbage, side yams, side of peach cobbler, and a large Kool-Aid. I am very disappointed to say that the food is very much lacking. it was not seasoned and some of the food just had no taste at all. I am the type of person who supports small businesses but I also have to be honest when I choose to review a business. Very hopeful for the food and super excited but I will be honest and say that I probably will never return here again due to how expensive the food is versus the taste. In total I paid almost $50 and did not finish my plate because the food to me just was not good at all.

Yelp
The best soul food in Houston! I have been there a couple of times, first time I had the oxtails, amazing!!! Second time smothered pork chops the best!!

Crissy Y.

Yelp
This was our first visit to this establishment today. We really enjoyed the friendly staff and clean environment. Delicious fried chicken, yams, corn bread, sweet potato pie, and Mac & cheese.
google avatar

Jeffrey H.

Yelp
Well, I have mixed feelings about this establishment. First off the food is served cafeteria style which is fine. Everything looked fresh and delicious. It was piping hot that too was fine. The price is a bit steep for the amount of food you get but in this day and age, it is what it is. I always say good food ain't cheap and cheap food ain't good. That being said I believe that there was a serious lack of seasoning on our soul food. One of the biggest reasons you go to a soul food place is for the seasonings. I'm sorry but I didn't taste a speck of salt, pepper, garlic, season salt, nada damn thing. I was disappointed about this. I also heard that the movie Jason Lyric was shot at one of their two locations in Houston, Texas. So next time I come back and I will be back let's put some soul in them beans, cabbage, pork chops, and baked chicken. The mac and cheese was off the chain so was the cornbread. The service was very good everyone had that southern charm. And while we were there it got crowded quickly so I may be the only person complaining about the seasonings. Lololol. The ambiance was cool I felt right at home in the 3rd ward...
google avatar

Jonaya P.

Yelp
Very disappointed in the meal I had. Fried chicken with yams, and macaroni & cheese. Nothing baked about this macaroni AT ALL. The yams lacked flavor tasted like they barely put anything in it. I was scared the fried chicken had maggots in it or something cause it looked old & stale. The cornbread had a funny taste and was nasty definitely wouldn't eat here again and sadly this was my first time.

Latoya T.

Yelp
Nasty!! I will never go back. The rice and gravy taste watery, the cabbage is hard, oxtails are hard, not to mention the Mac and cheese is nasty!

LaTanja B.

Yelp
LBG-This Is It's customer service deserve an excellent rating because I got a smothered chicken plate and they forgot to put the rice on the plate I called and Tasha apologized and said immediately come back in and we will comp the meal. Tasha deserves Kudos for her great customer service. This type of customer service makes a customer want to come back and recommend the restaurant to others. Great job Tasha

Yelp
Oh God where do I start? this is my 3rd visit this restaurant, but My first at this new location, I had the pork chops, rice, cabbage, and of course gravy. I also had tea cakes for dessert that reminded me of my grandmother. I will sneak back soon as I can!!
google avatar

Yelp
Food and service is horrible!! Don't waste your time for the unseasoned undercooked food or the abusive customer service.
google avatar

May M.

Yelp
I am visiting from the Bay Area and so I haven't had too much soul food, but I went here and the worker gave me a sample of the ox tail (which was hella good!) but I was feeling chicken. I liked the Mac and cheese, the green beans, and gravy but I was not too big of a fan of the actual grains of rice. The fried chicken was ok but I guess it was my third fried chicken in two days. Next time I'd probably get the ox tail instead. The green beans was 10/10!!! The cornbread was 10/10 also!!! They also used foil to separate my fried chicken so it doesn't get soggy from the gravy and rice. Workers are nice:) Would come again and try the other food :)
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
This is it? This is...almost it. To avoid the confusion with the menu, for the last few years I always ordered This Is It to-go. They have a delivery system that allows you to pickup your order contactless, in a small locker. Unlike others, I don't mind the Mac & cheese, it's not soulful as in it won't clog your arteries, but it's not offensive by any means. It's understated, shy mac. When fresh, their cornbread is nice so long as you're on team slightly sweet cornbread (like grits sweet or savory is a divisive topic). They continuously forget the gravy to my to go mashed potatoes, so I can't offer an accurate opinion & the smothered chicken is aight. Their candied yams could easily be made into a pie & my mother (a sweet potato enthusiast gives them her stamp of approval). I never have any issues parking and although I've never seen the same staff member twice, they're always friendly when I speak. My last trip in, they forgot my to go order, which cost me an extra 5-10 minutes, but all and all, I wouldn't say this is it, I'd say, This...could use a bit of improvement, and while it's improving, I'm here to support!

Alicia M.

Yelp
Food was bland no salt nor seasoning I was hoping it was gone be a lot better portions were good tho a big plate of tasteless food gravy wasn't good cabbage taste like it was just boiled

Yelp
We had delicious oxtails and bbq pork ribs. This food is delicious and one of my regular spots for delicious soul food. Side note: they now offer daiquiris and they only have greens on Sundays
