BEDBUGS AND DISHONEST - do not stay here. DO NOT STAY HERE - bedbugs and dishonest. The hostel is infested with bedbugs. Really, really badly. I woke up and saw 10 on me at one time. Usually you only know they exist from the bites - to see this many is a very bad infestation. The owner is aware of the bedbugs, but misleads guests, and does not treat the bedbugs correctly to get rid of them. She 'treats' the problem by changing the sheets of each bed daily, which hides the evidence but does not get rid of the bugs. When I confronted her with video and photo evidence, and 3 dead bugs in a bag, she said 'everywhere in Madeira has them'. When confronted with the evidence from Google reviews that guests had complained this week, last week, last month about them, she then said 'what am I supposed to do about them, I fumigated 6 months ago. If I tell people they will not stay here'. I checked with other guests. All had bites. Many had been yold by the owner that these were mosquito bites and that the mosquitoes were bad at this time of year (they are not). The owner seems to rely on the fact that most guests are young adults who do not know how serious bedbugs are. I became quite unwell from the bites. I developed a rash all over my body and had difficulty breathing. This kind of allergic reaction is not uncommon. Fortunately this was able to be treated with steroids, inhalers and antihistamines by the pharmacist, but had this required a hospital stay, I would have had to pay for that. I was offered a refund, but everywhere else that I could have stayed was very expensive. I eventually managed to get the owner to pay for alternative accomodation for me for the last 3 nights. Another guest went home a week early because the owner refused to provide alternative accommodation. But my expenses do not end there. I will have to throw away any leather or fabric items that cannot be washed at 60 degrees. This includes 2 pairs of walking boots, raincoats, my wallet and my bag. If I take these things home, I will infest my house. My insurance company will not pay for this because there is evidence the hotel knew about the problem. So far, the owner is refusing to compensate me for these items. If I do not do this, I will have bedbugs in my home and will have to pay thousands to get rid of them. Do not stay here. If your teenager has stayed here, do not let them bring their bags into the house or you will have to pay thousands to get rid of bedbugs from your house

BED BUGS. I’ve booked the hostel in January (the trip was in August) and I already read the reviews about bed bugs but I thought that the hostel would take care of it before I was going on my trip. The first night I noticed some bites on my body and sent pictures to the staff. They told me it’s mosquito bites. A few days later I woke up at 4 am and couldn’t sleep because of all the itching and scratching. I had bed bugs all over my body. I showed the staff and they refunded me and payed for medicine and I also switched hostels. I had some friends in the same room in the hostel and I told them about the bed bugs. One day after I left there was a new person moving into the hostel onto the same bed. The staff didn’t do anything with the bed, only changed sheets. It’s a cheap hostel but it’s not worth it because of the bed bugs. And I’m not the only one who got them from the hostel. The staff was nice and helped me so that was good. I still have bed bugs even when I got home. In my neck, my face and all over my body. Not worth it. Almost ruined my trip

Clean little hostel with helpful stuff. Shared bathroom and shower. The location is perfect, close to the center, the beach and for a good price. There is also two grocceries nearby, which I found beneficial, that I didn't have to walk far and lug bags around. Hostel can be quiet actually, but if you are with bunch of careless people, who need to shower, use hairdryer and make a mess on the stairs in the middle of the night (1-3AM), it can be annoying. But this is not the problem of the hostel itself, but their guests. I enjoyed it here

Wouldn‘t recommend if you actually wanna sleep at night. The walls are thin like paper, you hear literally everything. The staff wasn‘t really friendly nor super rude, but it wasn‘t really welcoming. A bit unhygienic, no bins have bags, especially the bin in the toilette should at least have a bag in it. All in all it‘s okey if u don’t need any sleep at night.

BEDBUGS AND IRRESPONSIBLE! There were bedbugs in the room next to mine, and the hostel staff said nothing. I only found out because other guests told me. Instead of closing the room and treating it properly, they just washed the sheets and rented it out again the next day. NO specialist cleaning, no warning, nothing. This place is unsafe, unhygienic, and dishonest. Avoid at all costs

The hotel is rather small one. In general it is located in a great place, close to the city center. Whats important the hostel offers a parking place for 6€/day which is a rly good price. The place was very clean and well organized and the staff was very friendly and helpful. It has some drawbacks - and the biggest one is that its a loud place. Walls seem to be very thin, and the kitchen downstairs can be heard by all guests if someone is loud in there

Bedbugs. Despite getting a full refund, dont go there if you want to enjoy your holidays. We had bedbugs in all 4 beds of the room.

I never thought I would have to write a one-star review, but I feel it’s important to share my experience regarding my stay at this hostel. Check-in was smooth, and the staff was friendly. My bed was prepared, and everything initially seemed fine. However, later that night, I noticed bed bugs on my pillow and blanket. I immediately turned on the light and observed multiple bugs. I was very concerned and sent an email to management, as there were no staff available at night. A newly arrived guest also noticed similar issues on his bed and decided to leave. Another guest mentioned he had raised similar concerns earlier but was informed that there was no issue. He mentioned experiencing bites, which raised concerns for me about cleanliness. Feeling uncomfortable, I packed my belongings and left the hostel at midnight to find alternative accommodation. The next morning, management responded, stating that such an incident had not been reported before. They refunded my stay, evacuated the room, booked a new hostel for the affected guests, and offered transportation assistance. I appreciate their prompt response; however, the experience caused unexpected challenges. I visited a pharmacy for treatment and was advised to seek further medical attention if necessary -- which I ended up at emergency for this. I requested coverage for medical expenses, but the hostel management agreed to reimburse only the pharmacy costs. While the hostel has since taken corrective actions, I hope they implement more rigorous preventive measures to ensure guest safety and comfort. For fellow travelers, I recommend checking bedding and surroundings thoroughly upon arrival and considering accommodations with round-the-clock staff availability. I appreciate the management’s efforts and hope this feedback helps improve the experience for future guests.
