Clean, comfy room. Very nice staff. Grim looking corridors but not at all unpleasant rooms for a hostel. Decent location, safe area close enough to everything you might want to see. I'd stay again.

Place seemed to be under furnished. Although good for one night, it has no frills whatsoever. Just beds and a closet and dresser. the mattresses were okay if you like harder beds (I do, so it was fine). But the bunk bed was kinda hard to get on because there was no ladder. It's a hostel, do there are community bathrooms. However these were very clean and well maintained. Overall, good for a cheap, short stay, butfor anything of length there are definitely other options.

Some useful facilities, such as the laundry and tea/coffee making facilities, but shared bathrooms are poor, no air con in rooms means they're unbearably hot in summer. The first room we were shown had signs of bedbugs (they then moved us to a newly refurbished room with no bugs.)

40 Berkeley is an excellent hostel. Our family stayed in one of their nicer options, a "one-bedroom apartment". It had a bedroom with a double bed and private bathroom, living room with two sofas to sleep on and a kitchenette. Mostly updated, except for the bathroom, it was comfortable enough and had a nice view, as it was on the top (7th) floor. Location is non-touristy, in the South End. The theatre distrust is nearby. Most guests are younger travelers from all over the world. There's a nice courtyard off the lobby, as well as large common areas inside. The staff is friendly and helpful. Most parking options are several blocks away, though. Definitely an option to consider if you're a family on a budget. Kind of refreshing to get away from the sterile chain hotels, too.

Rooms were ok, floors could be cleaned better, but beds were made well. The communal showers need to be maintained more, since there were often leftover items from other tenants. Otherwise it was sufficient for an overnight stay on a budget.

Stay away if you can afford to! Its cheap... for Boston. Don't know why hotels are so expensive here, I've found better value for money everywhere, even NYC. The bed was terrible and the room so small there was no place to open the suitcases. The hostel was hot, humid, noisy, in disrepair and I never noticed any cleaning. You will need earplugs if you stay here! Breakfast was ok, but the staff hardly spoke English. Found mould on the bread one morning. The staff didn't seem to care much, but replaced the bread at my request. Location is good: a lot of stuff to do on walking distance, but overall I wouldn't recommend staying here.

Lovely bathrooms, and some semi helpful staff. But the biggest issue is the heat/ air con as you are forced to sleep in a furnace. They promise a ceiling fan in every room, but this is not the case. Instead they provide you with a single floor fan with barely enough power to move a curtain let alone cool a room with 4 people. Because of this you're forced to open your window, but then the ongoing construction work in the hotel will wake you up at the crack of dawn. Really disappointing, as the one thing you want from a hotel is the ability to sleep, but due to the heat and the construction work, this is impossible.

Really decent, well located hostel. The staff were helpful, the rooms were just what we needed - as were the bathrooms, the social areas were fine too (board games/computers/books available). A con would be the lack of air conditioning and only small fans in the bedrooms which got very hot at night. I would stay again!
