Portland’s Best Bars and Cafes That Play Vinyl Records | Eater Portland

"Downtown Portland has lost many of casual hangout spots that catered to happy hour meetups and low-key business meetings in recent years. Thankfully, the trend is starting to reverse with bar-cafe hybrids like 40 LBS. The Second Avenue location functions more like a conventional coffee shop, but the Main Street space is open later and features a full cocktail menu as well as a brutalist record player nook in one corner for a bit of extra ambiance. The space is industrial and heavy on cement, but colorful murals and a meandering neon-accented bar give the room a more playful feel than the typical factory floor minimalism found at other contemporary cafes." - Ben Coleman

Sip Coffee at These Charming Cafes in Portland and Beyond

"After operating out of a small space downtown for several years, 40 Lbs quietly opened its second location just blocks away from the original. The new lounge is many times the size of the first, with multiple tables that can seat large groups comfortably. Also in the lounge is a full bar, featuring a variety of coffee and non-coffee cocktails. 40 Lbs serves Coava coffee as espresso, batch brew, and several different types of cold brew. Patrons looking for something special should try the Wake n Shake, 40 Lbs’s take on a cold shaken cappuccino." - Levi Rogers

Google
Stopped in here today for the first time. Great atmosphere- the woodsy theme perfectly encapsulates Oregon’s outdoor vibe. Food was excellent- my breakfast sandwich was hot, fluffy bread, egg cooked perfectly. Hot chocolate serviced quickly and was perfect drinking temp. Will be back again to visit Dave the elk!

Google
Tasty, reasonably priced food with both lighter and more substantial options (the smoked pork belly banh mi is great and GENEROUS) and all of the standard coffee/tea drinks. Seating is cozy with lots of cushions, and the music's reliably good. Great place to bring a laptop and work!

Danielle Steward

Google
We stopped in for a quick bite and a delicious coffee to sip. We loved the bagel and english muffin sandwich. Their decor was stylish with amazing textures and details.

Google
I love the decor and friendly service but the banh mi I ordered was surprisingly spicy, as someone who's used to and has a comparably very high spicy tolerance I'm able to handle it but don't think it'll be a pleasant experience for most customers who walk themselves into it unprepared. The banh mi also tastes overly salty, not sure if it's a one time thing but it's not made very well, feels like an amateur doing things the first time and screwed up unknowingly.

Google
Cool coffee shop with plenty of seating. Staff was nice and food was good for coffee shop standards. Enjoyed the breakfast toasts, while the coffee was too light for my taste

Heather Jordan

Google
Very good coffee (got a hot caramel latte) and it was smooth and strong! Love the pastry selection and they are quick with serving. Will grab coffee from here again when I’m in the area

Google
This place personifies the subculture of coffee as cocktails beautifully. They take their coffee seriously, but unpretentiously, and their drinks are both approachable and undeniably delicious.

Google
This is our first time in Portland OR and we couldn’t be happier to have found this amazing coffee place! The food and drinks were as wonderful as the atmosphere. Will definitely come back!

Yelp
This place is perfect for a quick or leisurely breakfast. The breakfast pastries are delicious, and the hot food offerings are both excellent and affordable. There is ample space to sit, the music isn't turned up too loudly, and the staff is kind. The smaller joint down the street is also good for a to-go breakfast (no full-fledged kitchen). Highlights are the breakfast burrito and the banana chocolate muffin. Thank you for being a great establishment!

Yelp
Great stop for coffee especially if you have to charge an electric vehicle. Very easy to access with good line of sight of vehicle! Latte was delicious.

Yelp
The worst chai latte I've ever had. Usually chai lattes are delicious and creamy. The chai I got was neither one of those. It tasted mostly chai spiced and a lot of water. Like super watered down. I also substitute the milk with coconut milk for an extra $2, but didn't taste any coconut milk at all. I'm not sure if the barista forgot to include coconut milk but the chai looked good but tasted horrible. I checked how the chai color looked and it was super light brown, like a watered down chai. Most likely she forgot the milk. It was too late as we got it and left! What a waste.

Yelp
Not too shabb. Pretty good coffee and delicious pastries. The owner is super cool and has a Vietnamese coffee on the menue!! Was delicious!!!

Yelp
If you have been to the other location down the street you know what a great ship this is. I was surprised when the owner opened a new location so large and near his other location in downtown right near the dark days of COVID. He not only opened it but also upped the experience by adding a bar to this location. The interior has a great vibe with wood and warm decor that makes you want to just hang out. Coffee is always outstanding and the bar cocktails are excellent in quality and creativity. Bottle selection in my opinion is spot on for variety and shelf position. Last but not least great service to go with it all. If you are working downtown, staying downtown or passing through you need to stop in and enjoy this great place!!!

Yelp
Beautiful coffee shop with gorgeous interior and good coffee. I love hanging out here though sometimes their hours are confusing. We've gone there only to find them closed when online it says they are open. The coffee is really good. I hope they keep using Oatly milk as it just makes the best lattes. They use Coava coffee, a really good local company. Sometimes the music is too loud but at least it's good, so I can enjoy it, though when with friends they have says it was too loud. This place is one of my favorite coffee shops in Portland, and anywhere. It's really beautiful and airy and overall has a great vibe.

Yelp
Wow. I loved their original location and this new one is also so classy. They've added excellent cocktails to the new space as well as their excellent coffee based drinks. Great folks work here, one of the best coffee shops around. Hope to return again soon.

Yelp
So I do like this place and I do get coffee here about twice per week. Good space, nice music playing, and friendly staff. My issue is that 40lb have raised prices recently on just plain coffee and discontinued their loyalty punch card. This makes me consider the frequency of my visits and tip. If I'm getting black coffee to go do I really want to pay +3$ and then tack-on .50$ because it was poured into a paper cup? 12 oz. of coffee even with overhead has to be 1.25$ even at full retail mark-up that's just 2.50$ per cup.

Grace L.

Yelp
The coffee is great. I love coming here. I've been going to 40 lbs since they originally opened. It's my go to study spot, my "I just survived finals" spot and just a great place to get the best avocado toast! The only reason I can't give them five stars is because the last few times I've tried to go down on the weekends and according to their website and social media they should be open. And they're not. Tried to reach out to the owner and got nothing back.

Yelp
What a cool spot! I absolutely love how much space and seating they have to offer. As of right now they don't carry any gluten free (GF) food or pastries, but I hope that changes in the near future!
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
One of the more elaborately decorated coffee shops around town. A great mix of zen and modern. Always great coffee as well as snacks and baked goods. Wanna come check their cocktail hours out soon.

Yelp
Very hip and yummy coffee shop in downtown Portland. They served up a unique Fig All Spice Latte that was a perfect start to my day. My only ponder, it is February and they are still celebrating the holiday season...

Yelp
Love every single thing about this place! Fabulous coffee, delicious pastries - including figgy scones and croissants from Bakeshop, my favorite bakery - a super cool interior and vibe, stellar customer service, plus a full bar! Yep, you heard that right! Whether you need a coffee and pastry to start your day or a cocktail or glass of wine after work, 40 LBS coffee & Bar has you covered! Located on the bottom of the One Main building, which has one of the best looking lobbies in town, right near the World Trade Center, it's definitely worth seeking out. They actually have a smaller location just a few blocks north on 2nd with the same coffee, pastries and sophisticated yet casual vibe, but I like this location best. Inside is all natural wood, a long counter along the window that is fantastic for people watching, plus several tables and nooks to hang out in. fir Those working in the area, you can stop in and grab a bottle of wine to go. They even have a small section of gifts - candles, cookbooks, tea. Whatever your craving, coffee or a craft cocktail, you can't go wrong here!

Yelp
Visited 40 LBS Coffee + Bar before exploring Downtown Portland. The safe was patient & kind as we asked questions and explored their menu. This coffee shop + bar was extremely cute, clean, and vibrant. Looks perfect for a coffee date, quick stop in, and or a chill place to work. We ordered: 1 espresso shot 1 hot green tea 1 latte

Yelp
Nice decor, a little expensive for the sized cups but the coffee had a delicious flavor! Service was good but I went in around 130pm on a Friday so there weren't too many people there. Didn't try any of the food, just had a small oat latte.

Yelp
Stopped in for a coffee and quick breakfast before taking a walk down the waterfront. Delicious! I tried their coffee special of the day while my husband had their drip. Both were great but the coffee was so excellent, I wish I had done something plain to better taste the roast. We also had their avocado toast which was way fancier and tastier than I expected. (Who knew?!) My husband also decided to have a bahn mi for breakfast because why not? Honestly, that was the highlight. So good.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop w/ some food options & lots of room to settle in for a quiet reprieve in the afternoon when you get tired to walking around. Espresso came w/ a glass of sparkling water.
google avatar

Bonnie R.

Yelp
The locals know this is a gem of a place. It has everything we love from delicious coffee made by sweet people with kind attitudes to a beautiful authentic NW-inspired aesthetic with several seating options. And only locals know they have several excellent inexpensive surprise food options - many of which are Vietnamese with super fresh ingredients. Banh Mi bites are a must. Rice bowl with pork belly. Or a stepped up avocado toast. And the best surprise is the lovely mixed drinks and small but excellent selection of whiskey which you can enjoy throughout the day but we downtown workers run to in the short window of time before they close early evening.

Yelp
Cool newer coffee and bar spot in downtown near the World Trade Center building. The decor was very pleasing and had this nice vibe to it. I liked that you can get either a cocktail or coffee/tea. The selection of spirits were pretty good. I had a London Fog and enjoyed it. Next time will have to try a cocktail.

Yelp
On our last morning in Portland we stopped by 40 LBS. Such a great aesthetic and vibe inside - and hot, fresh coffee! My only regret is not having breakfast there....next trip! Friendly staff, too. Can't speak to the lattes, but if you're looking for a great spot to meet with friends, grab a quick cuppa or get some work done in a beautiful space, 40 LBS is your spot!

Yelp
A wonderful gem and a must see when in Portland!! I highly recommend the ham and cheese croissant and a latte. Great taste and beautiful coffee art!

Yelp
Great soy milk cap and latte, nice interior, friendly personnel. Good location too, nice outside seats.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee shops to frequent when I'm in the downtown area. Housed inside an office building on the first floor, I've had their drip coffee, matcha latte, and their normal lattes and all have been fantastic. The employees are always friendly and the drinks come out fast. A couple of coworkers I went here with ordered food from here too and spoke highly of their food offerings. Solid spot for coffee, I'll continue to come back here whenever I'm in the area!

Nathalie P.

Yelp
Great location, service, tables/set-up, menu. Sometimes it gets load with the a/c or some system that's the only drawback I experienced, but I was sitting in the back so might have been closer to the source

Christopher B.

Yelp
Great space. Espresso is good. However their cold brew is consistently bad - weak and watery. I keep forgetting this and ordering it again and then it ruins my coffee experience. This is a consistent problem over the last year or more, so avoid the cold brew!
google avatar

Jaclyn S.

Yelp
Loved this place for working -- came back a few times during my time in Portland. Really adored the mochi matcha donut!
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
Great coffee spot with well-made coffee, pastries and friendly staff. What more could you ask for? Nice little tables to work remote for a time before seeking out another shop in the downtown area.

Andy M.

Yelp
Best place to hang out downtown. Indie vibe with friendly staff, great coffee and freshly made snacks. 5 stars!
google avatar

Don V.

Yelp
The coffee is good, but the Vietnamese is probably the best we had in Portland. Definitely recommend the banh mi or bun! Satisfyingly surprised with the food.
google avatar

Heather N.

Yelp
Great coffee, very consistent quality and service. It's one the reasons why I miss going in to work everyday.
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
Croissant sandwich and latte were great. Officially giving Starbucks the boot. This place is a must try.
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
Great customer service. Great coffee. Great atmosphere. 10/10. I had the oat milk latte and the bf had a mocha and an Asiago bagel with smoked salmon cream cheese - said it was great and generous with the schmear!
google avatar

Yelp
This 2nd location for 40LBS is heavenly. Maintaining it's classy ambiance similar to the first location, it offers a wonderful place to sip coffee, engaging conversation, and delicious pastries. For the after work crowd, a sweet location for drinks. Highly recommend!

Dar T.

Yelp
Delicious, smooth coffee. Lots of alternative milk options. Delicious syrups (combine the vanilla and cardamom for a really delicious oat latte!). The almond croissant was fresh, flakey and delicious. The yogurt parfait filling and tasty - they offered honey without having to ask (the yogurt is unsweetened). Highly recommend.

Yelp
I went in the mid-afternoon for a beverage break with a co-worker. We had great service. There were many domestic brews on tap, as well as a decent selection of whiskeys to choose from. We will definitely had back again the next time we need to find a place for a drink.

Tamara L.

Yelp
I've been coming to 40lbs since they opened and have loved every visit! My favorite is snugging up in a corner while sipping a delicious cup of java. Great service has me coming back again and again...and now that they offer craft cocktails, I'm an even bigger fan. Highly recommend!

Chris H.

Yelp
I am still getting to know this place and explore its offerings, but so far I have found the espresso drinks to be very good and the food well-prepared and tasty (tofu banh mi and chicken spring roll). During my 2 visits staff were friendly and helpful. I give it a solid 4 and a half stars, but I think it has potential to move up to 5 stars.

Robert H.

Yelp
Great cappucini and lattes. Chill vibe to the space. The staff really know coffee, and the scones were good. Gotta come back for the bar, which looks interesting, too. Will definitely be back when visiting Portland!

Jenny B.

Yelp
Absolute go-to spot in Portland. Beautiful space-- perfect for working during the day with happy hour cocktails afterward. Great spot to host work parties too-- much more intimate than some other spots downtown.

Frank L.

Yelp
I've only had their coffee so far (which is as amazing as the original 40 LBS coffee shop), but rumor has it they have a vegetarian Bhan Mi now, so I'll definitely stop by to try it as soon as possible!
