The Best Wines (and Wineries) in Canada's Okanagan Valley

"An architecturally dramatic winery restaurant created by self-styled 'glamour farmers,' celebrated for elegant cool-climate Pinot Noir and wood-fired, regionally inspired cuisine that complements the estate's wines." - Joanne Sasvari

Block One never disappoints! Service is always amazing and every meal is an epicurean delight. We were greeted by Anthony was a perfect host who made us feel welcome as if we were really good friends, (wicked set of boots too Anthony). Mirella was our server and exemplifies everything that is good in that role. Did I mention how great the food is? Treat yourself, you will be glad you did.

We had the pleasure of being served by Mark, who was knowledgeable, kind and super fun (we would have loved to have him sit and drink the great wine with us!). The food was incredible.. we had soft shell crab, tomato salad, corn bread (#1 dish), aguachile, and finished with a delicious chocolate log of sorts. We love supporting local and appreciate that the 50th owners do as well! Definitely worth the visit. Great food, service, views, wine and atmosphere!

Went here to celebrate our wedding anniversary and it was just incredible! It’s worth the trip. The design and ambiance is 10/10. Views a decor are top notch. The service is also second to none. Quick, friendly and knowledgeable. We had the trout and duck wings and both were some of the best we’ve had. Fresh, flavorful and cooked to perfection. They also have solid wine pairings for most entrees. Can’t say enough good things about this place. Highly recommend, we will be going again someday.

Google
Had a wonderful wine tasting and dinner here. The food was fantastic and I really enjoyed that there were many options. The water buffalo tongue was really good. The service both for the tasting and the restaurant was excellent. Would definitely come back, especially for dinner. Really beautiful at sunset.

Google
The staff were wonderful — friendly and professional. The tasting experience was absolutely outstanding, and the overall vibe of the place was unique and very enjoyable. It was a great experience overall! My only criticism is that in such a beautiful and upscale setting, I was expecting the restaurant to be just as amazing. Unfortunately, while the space looked fancy, the food itself didn’t live up to the atmosphere.

Nikkia was a wonderful server! She made our anniversary dinner a treat! The food was outstanding as well. Thank you so much for the amazing night. We come here for our anniversary every year and that will continue for ever

Haven’t been treated this well at a restaurant since pre-Covid. The food… I don’t even have words to describe it—absolutely incredible. Compliments to the chef, Nikita! Our server was amazing, the wine was fantastic, and the view made it all even better. This restaurant is truly top shelf. I highly recommend it—just an all-around great experience from start to finish.

Had a lovely Dinner at Block One at 50th Parallel Estates while on vacation from Ontario. Beautiful views, great wine and excellent food - delicious, fresh and well presented. Service was spectacular! Warm and welcoming, and our server, Mark was very knowledgeable and engaging, making our experience very enjoyable. Thank you Mark!! My husband tried the “Newly Fashionable” cocktail…really impressive!. We also enjoyed the Duck Wings and the Citrus Crudo as a starter- both amazing and paired very well. For mains, the Lamb Rack and Halibut both great, and for Dessert the Baked Alaska and the Chocolate Bar - Yum! Highly recommend.

Yelp
This is a gorgeous building and has great views of the lake (last time I was here it was smoky). The wine is good quality though a little out of my price range when it's the eleventh winery of my Kelowna trip. I still walked away with two of their library wines because I have a problem. Staff was nice and friendly.

Yelp
It's always a treat to go to a winery and see the views from the buildings however the food doesn't always live up to the reputation. We had brunch and I ordered the wagu burger. I had never had wagu before and I was looking forward to it. It is highly marbled with fat so the burger should have been juicy. It was not there was a thin dry patty that looked like it was precooked and then reheated 'a la minute'. It's was a disappointing burger. The bread was odd. It had little structure and flattened out when you picked up the burger to take a bite, my sister had a chicken sandwich and she just took the bread off the sandwich and ate the crispy chicken patty. It was just fine, nothing to write home about, it you go maybe go for lunch or dinner not brunch.

Yelp
We went to Keloena on wednesday to visut my daughter who recently moved there. While she was working, my husband and I decided to have lunch at Block One restaurant at 50th parallel estate winery near Lake Country. My daughter and her boyfriend had eaten there a week prior and really enjoyed it. My husband and I are serious foodies and dont go anywhere without reading views or recommendations from people we trust. Block One exceeded our expectations. First the view what a spectacular setting to enjoy delicious food. I ordered the adobo charred stealhead trout on coconut curried rice with charred golden beet slices. Omg my husband irdered seared scallops with asparagus tom yum and chicken skin gremolata, trout roe . Very good also. We both had dessert baked aladka for me and chocolate bar with malted mousse fleur de sel. Both pretty sweet. Can't say enough about the mains though. Bought a bottle of signature Estate red. Our server kindly let me sample profile and estate while I sipped on a crisp white. Recommenfed Menu changes to summer festures July 9th. Go now for the stealhead.

Yelp
When looking at staying in Vernon we started researching restaurants and found 50th parallel. It was close to where we were staying so we looked for resos. This was a bit confusing as you can't book a lunch reso and a tasting reso... or at least you can't through open table. I started with one and then tried to add on the other and it would only allow me to change my first reso... so we went for lunch but did not end up going to the tasting room/ trying any of their wines. Partly because we just didn't want to wait in another line after having finished our lunch. The venue itself is lovely and as we learned very sought after for weddings. We saw a gorgeous brida party walking around to the private rooms for them and then into their event hall a few times. This led us to inquire and apparently they are booked for 3 years and start around $30 000... Food wise, we did enjoy our meal. We started with duck wings that were so good but very saucey. The guys in our group had the chicken sandwiches and my friend and I shared some starters. They were all pretty good but the service was sort of slow and just felt flat. Like a joeys or earls at best Where it just felt like a chain style place We'd for sure give it another chance and maybe dinner would be a better experience, but not sure the prices are fitting for the value of food/ service you get.

Yelp
We were at predator ridge and saw the sign for 50th parallel winery so we decided to head over for some wine and food. When we pulled up it is a beautiful location, it's very grand and sleek appearing. We went inside and it was only 2pm on a saturday with maybe 10 people doing a tasting and three tables in their restaurant. The young girl asked us if we had a reservation and when we said we didn't she seemed so disgusted with us for trying to come and check out their winery. She ended up telling us they had no room for a few hours so we walked around and made it to their restaurant. Again, three tables. So we asked the young girl when they'd know there was time for us to have some food and wine. This girl as well not impressed we didn't have a reservation but said ok we can seat you. Our server was fabulous. She was super efficient and friendly. We went with a few glasses of their pinot noir rose, fresh focaccia, and luau pizza and everything was wonderful. The food was so warm and fresh. We would come back for the food any-day but make sure you make a reservation here as they don't appear to like walk ins.

Yelp
Block One Restaurant just opened!! I have enjoyed both the lunch and dinner menus. The crab cakes are the best I've ever had!! All crab! The forno roasted asparagus was such a treat! The chef has designed a menu that is carefully thought out and includes fare for vegetarians, and gluten free options are excellent. Mainly locally sourced with a culinary garden that will supply the kitchen all summer! Don't miss out on this fantastic new restaurant on Okanagan Lake!! Ten minutes from Predator Ridge! Great service, delicious food, and absolutely gorgeous location. Go for a wine tasting and stay for a delightful lunch.

Yelp
A brand-spanking new winery in lovely Lake Country, BC. Their tasting room is rustic, modern and temporary, but welcoming and comfortable too. Specializing in Pinot Noir, that blew the socks off this Syrah lover. Honestly, we are normally not fans of red wines of the north Okanagan, but this wine is different. Unfortunately for you, it is now sold out and they are taking pre-orders for 2014 - success does have it's problems. :) They also have a lovely selection of whites; a Riesling that tastes like no other I've ever tried (it's actually pleasantly a tad sweet versus sickeningly sweet), a lovely Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, and Rose that is true and actually good (not for zinfandel lovers). Really happy with this new addition, looking forward to seeing their grand plans become reality over the next few years.

Yelp
Had amazing food and wine here at Block One! Great brunch spot ! Highly recommend checking them out!

Yelp
Food was ok but the service was bad. The rating was mainly for service. We had a big group and we have made reservation ahead of time. We arrived at 10 mins after 3pm. We knew there was happy hour and that's why we went there. When we have arrived, we were told that there was no happy hour because that section was not opened. It's ok then we settled in the 'dining room'. The 'so called' happy hour section was literally just at the lounge area. Upon questioning with the manager, we were told that we could actually sit there. So we moved over there but the waitress wasn't happy and was very unfriendly to us. The waitress H did not come to us throughout the whole time but she went to other tables to chat and talk and laugh. We felt quite disrespectful. This is definitely an unpleasant experience to all of us.

Yelp
I read the positive reviews and went to BLOCK ONE at the end of my trip in Kelowna. I'm not sure if they switched the chef but it has gone down hill from food to services if the reviews online are anything remotely close to true. I would leave zero stars if I could. The food was awful to mediocre for the price and to make it even worse it is not even close to authentic. All the food I ordered was terrible, and as a Korean, I felt ashamed that they labelled their oily, low quality duck wings saturated with excessively sweet sauce as "Korean-Style Duck Wings". Don't spend your money here, there are so many better options in Lake Country than this place.

Yelp
Food was incredible!!! They use Two Rivers meats - ethically raised beef... it was so tasty. Delicious tomatoes and greens from their garden. Appetizers to die for. The scenery is stunning, the architecture is amazing. Such a hip venue. The warm Okanagan air is luscious. We will be back!!

Yelp
4.5 I stopped by early in the morning, right when they opened, for a quick tasting. Their facility is welcoming, open and modern. They have a small tasting counter at the front but no restaurant and a limited retail section. They have two choices for their wine tasting: a choice of 4 or 8 (or maybe it was 6, I can't recall). I opted for the cheaper one. The tasting for 4 comprised of 2 whites, 1 rose, and a red (they only make 1 red). All four offerings were really solid. The Gewürztraminer wasn't overly sweet, and their pinot blew me away. Availability in Vancouver is somewhat limited. It can only be purchased at private liquor stores. It's a bit of a drive from Kelowna, but it's well worth it.

Yelp
We have enjoyed the various menus and even a wedding at this breathtaking, award winning vineyard! Come for the wine, enjoy all that the fresh menu has to offer and stay for the interesting architecture and amazing lake views! Great staff and a couple of owners who are passionate about their wines, and your experience. We love 50th!

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with amazing food! I had the beef tartare and it was excellent. My friend had the truffle macaroni and I wish I had ordered that. The service was amazing and fast and the wine was so delicious I joined the wine club. We went to the Fab 5 wineries in Kelowna and this had better wine and scene art than any. If you are in Kelowna this is definitely worth the drive north

Yelp
50th Parallel is bringing a very ritzy feel to the wineries in the Lake Country area. They have updated their look from what they had last year to the point where they are building a spot for weddings, people staying etc. slowly becoming a boutique winery. The tastings at 50th are not free, however, the wines are very delicious and worth the experience. My favorite of theirs is their rose, although, the 2013 is better than the 2014 they currently have (bought a case for my wedding). The rose is a pinot noir rose, which means it's a very fickle rose to get right (hence the pref for the 2013 over the 2014) but that also means this winery knows what it's doing because to grow Pinot Noir means you are taking a risk. Overall, this winery is a great choice if you are looking for that grape, and is a great alternative to some of the other more "known" wineries.

Yelp
Tasting fees always put me off vineyards, from the moment I step inside. Maybe it's because I feel like I need to life one of the wines so that I can get the fee waived or because I don't actually think you should charge that on wine you are trying to get people to like. This place just redid it's tasting house and in the past I've found this place to be quite pretentious, having to call for tasting appointments and such. The staff were friendly, though I felt like they didn't take us all that seriously because we were under the age of 30. They do have some great wines, though I wished that there was more red wine available, but the vineyard might be too far north to yield a good red wine crop. This place is still relatively new, so I have high hopes for the future.

Yelp
We had a bad experience although the restaurant came with good reviews. Upon arrival we were seated at a table exposing some of our party to direct sun. It was a very hot day so we asked to be relocated to another table. The hostess seemed very reluctant to accommodate our request and in the end led us to a high topped table that was not accessible to my wife who has mobility problems. There were several open tables in the restaurant, to which we pointed to one, and told it was reserved. There was no signage to confirm her claim, however at our insistence she reluctantly seated us. When our server finally came to our table, she was rude threatening to have us kicked out for our bad behaviour. Her bad attitude prevailed throughout the evening, responding curtly to any and all questions regarding the menu. Our party was frustrated but polite. When we left we couldn't help but notice the server and the hostess staring and pointing to our party. The following day I left a message with the owner, to inform her of our bad experience, and three days later, no reply. They say that the fish rots from the head down, and I believe that applies here. We won't be retuning to this restaurant ever again.
