The Orpheum Theatre is located in the heart of historic DTLA. It's a historic a theatre meaning there's no parking but if you look on The Orpheum website, the surrounding parking availability is listed. The walk to the building felt safe but keep in mind it is DTLA so keeping aware of surroundings is always a good idea. When entering the building, patrons go through a metal detector and a bag check. The easiest way to check in was via electronic ticket which was quick and easy.
The lobby area housed the merchandise for the show I attended. Again, the Orpheum was built in early 1900's and as such it is compact yet grand at the same time. There is also a large bar on this floor. If looking for a more low key ambiance, the bottom floor has a small, traditional but lovely bar, extensive bathrooms that are very clean and modern, and a beautiful dark paneled lounge type area. The bottom floor really called to my history major senses with the vintage furniture and comfortable seating. There is also a snack area that sells popcorn in a cute box.
Again, the theater being built before ADA, it's all stairs but there is an elevator for the disabled. The seating itself goes in line with the time period it was built. I'm 5'2 and there was no leg room. Also, to get to most seats, there are stairs. I'm very clumsy, and there was no railing leading to my seat. I am very grateful to the usher who assisted me. What a hardworking gentleman. This man had to take my hand and lead me to my seat. It was dark, I felt I might fall and this human basically saved my life by going the extra mile at amazing customer service. I got to my seat safely but I would recommend getting to your seat when the house lights are on.
The acoustics of this place were astounding. I was in the balcony area and the sound was crisp and clear. It was a beautiful show. Again, being an older theater, it was humid. If you visit during summertime, I'd recommend wearing something very light. I had on bracelets and a necklace. I had to take them off because it felt like moisture was building. There is no coat check available. There is very little space between you and the next person. Every time someone from my row came or went, we had to stand up to allow them access. It's one of those situations where being extremely considerate of those around you is required. The seating is not friendly toward the tall or bigger butted person's. This is the reality of an older building.
There were so many thing to appreciate about The Orpheum. Marble staircases. Intricate hand painted ceilings, hand carved balusters, grand chandeliers, gorgeous railings, historic light sconces, it's lovely. And I love that it is being preserved yet utilized. Hoping people respect the history of the place for generations to come to enjoy.
Overall, it was a very organized concert experience. I'd absolutely go back again.
