Yelp
I'm not a coffee snob. Honestly. I enjoy the social aspect of grabbing a cup of (hopefully good, strong, full of flavor but not pretension or systemic racism or misogyny) Joe. I'm also particularly fond of a place you can sit, read, and feel at home. Loaves and Witches checks ALL those boxes. I start my day with a cup of coffee, a book, and a place where I can be surrounded by my tribe. LGBTQIAA+, pagan, sane, artistically forward, progressive, and fiercely strong. Great baked good, outstanding staff, and a communal environment that I've only found in the cafe culture of the most sophisticated cities in Europe. A place to find some peace, but also to invite a friend to sit and catch up. Where all are welcome, unless you hate that kind of sentiment.

Yelp
Loaves & Witches is a fun spooky themed cafe that serves great coffee and baked goods. Since it is close to Loyola, expect to find a crowd and a tough time getting a table next to an outlet. I ordered the Coven Cold Brew, which was creamy and flavored with cinnamon & brown sugar. I also tried their Choco-chip cookie which had a crispy edge and soft middle. The place itself is decorated in a cool modern take on a witch's lair. With tasteful wall paper and a tin ceiling, always great. It has plenty of seating around and free WiFi. They have several WiFi options, the correct option as of 1/25 is "L&W 5G - Guest" with PW: cafe&coven

Yelp
I've been eyeing this place since they opened a little while ago and finally stopped in to wfh the other day. It was a little busy, but I was able to find a table to work and they did a great job getting customers orders placed and out. I liked how they really leaned into the witch theme and how many menu options they had to offer. I'm not a big coffee girlie, but the staff did a great job suggesting something flavorful. The shop is pretty spacious and nicely put together. All ages are welcomed as there were children there enjoying yummy drinks and sweet pastries. I tried the caramel latte and cinnamon roll, yum. I have a peanut/tree nut allergy, so I love that their pastries' display list their ingredients.

Yelp
New favorite coffee shop alert! This place is fantastic - from the ambience to the espresso to the baked goods and super friendly staff. We loved spending time in such a welcoming and cool space. Kid-friendly and very welcoming of our 1 & 4 year old. They have high chairs which was a lifesaver. Parking was easy to find right in front. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Aja and Lisa made ordering my daughter's vegan birthday cake so easy! Not only was the cake beautiful, it was so good! You would have never known it was vegan We decided on a chocolate layer, a vanilla layer, with caramel in between and covered in chocolate buttercream. So very tasty!!

Yelp
Such a cool bakery and coffee shop. Love the friendly vibes, cool interior design, friendly staff, and most of all vegan everything. Plenty of gluten free options too. It's a bakery and things sell out, so go early if you want the best selection. My London fog tea was delicious. Cinnamon roll and banana blueberry muffin outstanding. Plenty of street parking and outside seating too.

Yelp
I have no idea how I'm barely finding out about this spot as I've walked past here plenty of times. The place was PACKED on a Sunday afternoon but the line went fairly quick. Despite how busy they were, the cashier was extremely friendly, smiled the entire time, and answered any and all questions from every customer (and apparently everyone had plenty of questions that day haha). I had an oat milk latte which was okay but nothing that truly stood out. I also tried their onion bagel with vegan butter and a vegan blueberry muffin. The bagel was DELICIOUS and I will definitely be coming back for more. The blueberry muffin was pretty good as well. Pastries are a bit pricey but definitely worth it!

Yelp
I've been to Loaves & Witches now twice and it's growing on me. I think since they're still new, they're still ramping a few things up, as the second time I went they had far more options than the first time (there were very few loaves the first time I went, for example). The vibe of the cafe is so cool: music isn't too loud, the staff aren't shouting, the decor is fascinating, and it feels like a place you want to hang out to work. They have a decent amount of table space inside and some outside on either side of the corner if it's warm enough. It's as advertised: very witchy. It's also a very queer space, and one that anyone can feel welcome and comfortable being themselves in. The first time I went, I got a rosemary bagel toasted with butter. I was a bit disappointed to see the butter come in a plastic to go container with a plastic knife, but the bagel was so incredibly delicious that I forgot about that. The second time I came I got a slice of pumpkin bread which I devoured quickly. I also had tea which they steeped well, although I wish they had more flavor options. They still offer water for patrons with plastic disposable cups, and I wish they had some reusable ones for people who are staying there. I definitely want to keep coming back to see what they offer!

Yelp
Would've liked this place more if there was not so much plastic. Plastic silverware, plastic water cups, plastic cups of cream cheese, which could easily be eliminated by spreading it on the bagel. That would also eliminate the need for a plastic knife to spread it with. Also had to ask for more cream cheese since serving of cream cheese was so chintzy. Rosemary bagel was tasty, cappuccino was good. Downtown prices. Cashier was friendly .

Yelp
I went to order a regular coffee but the cashier upsold me on an Americana and it was cold

Yelp
Seriously, what a gem! Randomly found this place on the winter solstice no less. Its adorable. Staff were so kind. Great coffee! Tarot decks on the tables even and I got a pull I needed to hear so badly. Will be back for sure.

Yelp
Their vegan baked goods are 10/10. Stopped by here after lunch, and although they were out of quite a few things, I was able to snag a pumpkin scone and a blueberry banana muffin to go. I'm not usually the type of person to eat both in one sitting once I got home but they were so good I ate both! Whoops. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Super cute cafe in the hood. I stopped in on a Sunday afternoon for an onion bagel with cream cheese. I was able to bring my bagel outside and sit in their outdoor area. It was nice that the knifes they had were not plastic. I wish they had different options for cream cheese spreads. I will be back to try their other items on the menu.

Yelp
I'm into witch stuff so I was excited to drop by this place and made the trek north. Unfortunately I felt it was a bit of a let down. The staff was friendly. The coffee good. the pastries outside of the bagels looked great too. The witch element comes into play through cool design choices, a handful of art pieces, and tarot cards throughout the place. Unfortunately everything felt way too expensive for the actual experience. The space itself felt a bit uncomfortable, loud, and smelled like the sewage so I never felt quite at home or enjoying of the space. I love the concept, the community, and the vegan options which I don't find often-it just feels like maybe the space was rushed and they'd do better with some growth love and a different space. I wish them well but I probably won't be coming back.

Yelp
I loved this place - the vibes were amazing. The staff was so kind and plenty of seating for everyone. They have a wide menu of drinks and foods. I got the iced chai latte and it was delicious. Can't wait to try their baked items next time!

Jessica G.

Yelp
I really want to love this place. The pastries are to die for, but the drinks are just ok. The latte I had was too strong, and the tea lattes I've had are too weak with barely any flavor. I keep coming back for the coffee cake and cheezecake. The FOH staff needs more training on sanitation and food safety though. The baristas seemed to be hygienic enough. While sitting and waiting for my companion for several long minutes, though, I noticed the cashier pull down her long hair and make a new ponytail. She then continued to twirl her hair, touch her face and her phone, and also wipe her nose with her fingers, all without washing her hands even once. I also watched her pour customers' coffee, touch customers' plates for pastries, and toast bagels... all still without washing her hands. Quite disgusting. I actually avoided ordering any pastries even though that was the main reason I went.

Yelp
I just ate the best everything bagel from Loaves & Witches! I can't even share a pic because I inhaled it immediately. So thrilled to have such an amazing business in the neighborhood! You can just feel the sense of community and good vibes coming from this place. It's almost like someone has cast a spell.

Yelp
I was very disappointed. I ordered an iced matcha latte and they did not mix matcha powder well. In the picture you can see chucks of matcha. If you are going to put it on the menu, do it proper.

Yelp
Great new coffee/bakery shop in Edgewater...Wonderful comfy atmosphere with friendly staff and delicious cold brew and baked goods...What's not to like?

Yelp
Friendly staff and the salted pistachio coffee is a 10/10. Also recommend their pastries!

Yelp
The bagel I had here was so fresh and delicious. Not to mention the overall vibes of the place were great. Love the astrology themed cafe! Will be back here, have yet to try the rest of the pastries.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! there are so many TASTY gluten free/Vegan options. It is spacious with the best staff! They are so kind and make you feel so welcome. This is my new favorite local coffee shop/hang out spot. I also have to compliment the staff, they know my name and create an amazing vibe.

Emily S.

Yelp
As somebody whose tried to visit every coffee shop in the Edgewater area, I have to say this place was pretty disappointing. The coffee is fine and somehow manages to be at least 2x the price of what it should be. The cafe has a cool vibe but seems to value style of the space over the actual substance of the items you receive. Metropolis, down the street, is a much better deal with much better coffee.

Yelp
Loaves and Witches is a wonderful coffee shop! We went there for the first time on Tuesday and have been back three times since (it's Thursday). The ambiance is lovely and calm: there is a lot of seating room, the music in the background is perfect, not too loud, everything feel spacious and welcoming (their wallpaper is amazing, by the way). The staff is helpful, very friendly and kind to everyone. And every single thing we have tried so far (drip coffee (refills are $1!), latte, cappuccino, lavender scone, cinnamon roll and bagel (yes, I know, we have eaten a lot) was amazing. Their vegan options are phenomenal and they also have plenty of gluten free options. Two small suggestions as they continue growing: more savory options in the pastries menu would be great, and yes to further reducing plastic use (although they serve coffee in ceramic mugs and their cutlery is metal, so I think the earlier reviewer stating that there was too much plastic might have been there at the very beginning, when things were getting settled). Anyway, love the place. Go check it out. If you like pastries, coffee, and kind people, you'll love it.

Yelp
Tried this place via a recommendation from a friend. And wow, I love their coffee and pastries. The whole vibe. Their customer service is amazing too. Shoutout to Julia Goodmann. Try their cinnamon rolls they are insane (in a good way)

Rob P.

Yelp
Lovely addition to the neighborhood and they are on the way to be more than your typical coffee shop. It is missing its polished seen it their delicious baked goods. You guys need to work on your customer service training with your staff. Every time I go into your business the checkout staff is extremely rude, condescending and not trained well with your menu. I literally am ordering a pastry and coffee. Smile, be friendly and not make it about yourself. I had to wait minutes as they looked at their cellphone for messages and finished their conversation with their "co-worker" about how hard their job is. Really, what a bunch of lazy morons. It's a coffee shop, customer service is key.

Claudia R.

Yelp
Great place to sit on a weekend morning and enjoy a cup of tea and fresh bagel (or cookie) and work or watch the world go by. The staff are AMAZING!

Danielle C.

Yelp
Got a Strawberry Cupcake and an Iced Cookie Butter Americano. I don't think I've had a cupcake so moist and the frosting melts in your mouth. I'll definitely be back very soon!

Sare G.

Yelp
A really lovely addition to the neighborhood! Great overall vibes + very queer friendly. The coffee is stellar - a very classic menu focusing on quality! The food is incredible - most everything is vegan AND there's gluten free options that are GOOD. Like "I can't tell this is GF" level GOOD. This alone is really hard to find in coffee shops (or ever..), let alone the combination of v/gf. You can tell they are committed to creating standout items, both sweet and savory. Also very aware of allergens and trying to be as inclusive as possible about that, which is rad.
