Yelp
Parking: gotta walk a little bit but it wasn't hard to find one close Order then sit and they bring you your food. They have self serve kiosk but also there's a cashier to take your order Chicken was tender and Nong's sauce was perfect. Chicken soup was delicious and super hot. I loved it. Rice was made with chicken broth Service was fast and place was clean. Trash was constantly being emptied as well as the silverware tubs. The pork and rice was so flavorful with so many things going on in your mouth. I thoroughly enjoyed this place and it was such comfort food and well done. Portions were plentiful and prices were fair.

Yelp
One of my favorite Hainan Chicken restaurants ever! I always make it to Nong's for a plate and thai iced tea whenever I visit Portland. The chicken is super tender and flavorful, rice is perfectly done. I love the soup that they give us on the side, nice and refreshing dose of chicken broth. Their thai iced tea is out of the world, and you should definitely get it with ice cream because it's AMAZING with the ice cream!

Yelp
Interesting setup in a kind of food court. Limited seating inside it seems but decent space outside along the sidewalk. We enjoyed the chicken (soup was exceptional). The sauce that comes with the chicken lives up to the hype; I see why they sell bottles of it. The chicken was tender and very flavorful despite seeming deceptively simple. The pork is quite good, totally different flavors from the chicken. I really liked the vegetablez that came with it, as well as the marinated egg. This is a solid choice if you've already tried the Khao Man Gai. The free tea is nice, a soft ginger flavor, and I like the serve-your-own sauces situation, as well. Love this as a relatively affordable, simple, but delicious dinner or lunch option!

Yelp
As a Portland area native, I can confidently say that Nong's has always been THE PLACE for the best Khao Man Gai (chicken and rice) in the city. On my most recent trip back to the hometown, I came with some new friends to show them what Portland's food scene is all about. Quick and easy kiosk - we all ordered the signature Khao Man Gai, cut-up chicken breast over a warm bed of rice. You'll also get a side of their soup and fresh cucumbers. But the star of the show? The special Nong's sauce is what ties everything together. One of my friends almost bought a bottle of the sauce, that's how amazing it is! Everyone loved coming here, and plan to come back again when in Portland. This spot has been the perfect lunch spot for many years, and for many more years to come.

Yelp
You don't know how excited and happy, to be back at this Brick & Mortar, Nong's Khao Man Gai. I waited so long, It has been way too long for my favorite! I got my chicken, rice, livers and chicken skin but my new favorite is the special bitter melon noodle soup, If you love bitter melon you must get this soup. I've never tried anything like this soup ever and it was oh so comfort food, hit the spot good! Guay Tiew Gai Tun Mara, Bitter melon chicken noodle soup, comes with chicken wings, shredded chicken, shiitake mushrooms, gailan vegetables, daikon turnip, with thin angel hair rice noodles. The broth is so refreshing, I can taste the flavors of the spices, along with all the ingredients. It just so comforting eating this noodle dish. I need to find a place that has this or similar. I have to wait so long to enjoy this soup again. The chicken and rice is so good as usual, it sure brings back memories of visiting PDX and my daughter. I am so full and content that I got my Nong's visit in but Sad because we are leaving and I am going to miss it until we can visit again. ( This is a true story!) hehe. I can't wait to be back again, dreaming of this bitter melon soup & chicken & rice!! Nong's Khao Man Gai is a gem and so amazing, one of the best things in life is here!

Yelp
I went here for an early lunch as we were in a rush, and this place hits the spot in speed. There was no line at opening and we opted to order at the kiosk so we can take our time looking at the menu options and customizations. Note the 2% surcharge ordering in the kiosk though. We got the Khao Man Gai piset large and Khao Kha Muu (pork and rice), and as their original SE location, things like the pork and rice are only available in this location. The Khao man gai is good and satisfies my cravings, with a nice ginger sauce and refreshing soup. It's not the best but it is good. The piset large has more chicken meat and also livers/hearts, the latter which I'm not that interested in but worth a try. The Khao kha muu is very hearty but the rice is quite overcooked. The tangy sauce on the side cuts down the greasiness of the dish. This place is fast casual so you bus your own table and get your own cold water or hot tea. We were in and out of here in 30 minutes, which is very efficient. After all, they have a sign that says to spend no more than 45 min eating here if the place is busy.

Yelp
Pretty compact local mom and pop shop vibe thai restaurant. Very limited menu but very delicious Comfort chicken and rice you will crave in cool weather. We got the penut sauce on side which is delicious delicious. Soup is very good. Over all their food seems simple but subtle full of flavors that is impossible to make at home. Chili oil is very spicy compare to typical Chinese chilli oil from dimsum, be cautious and taste it first before you add on your dish. Self service to order and clean up after yourself, so no obligation on tipping. Chicken skin is also highly recommended but they sell out often and not always available.

Yelp
Food/Drinks: 5/5 Delicious food and relatively low cost. Not a wild beverage selection but some decent options. Everything was very flavorful and filling. Definitely exceeded my expectations. Service/Ambiance/Value: 3/5 As expected. Food court styled service. Shared space with several other restaurants. Nothing exceptional. Service team members appeared to be busy, although I was not absolutely certain what they were doing. Our group witnessed a couple of missed orders by the team for other patrons. Overall Comments: 5/5 Exceeded expectations. Will definitely return and refer to friends. Will definitely aspire to be there early to be any potential rush.

Yelp
Flavors are amazing! Interior was charming. Wish there was more smiles and friendliness for the service.

Yelp
13 years ago, I came to Portland and went to the food truck. I ordered the same thing here as I did 13 years ago and it was not the same. Don't get me wrong, the food was still good, but, the flavor is not the same compared to the 1st time when I had it. I do like that there is actually somewhere indoor and warm to sit. Tea, water, condiments are all self-serve, including all the dishes to the return area.

Yelp
I finally made it to Nong's! I got THE dish of Khao Man Gai, but I substituted steamed vegetables for rice (their "paleo" version, an extra $2). Plus a side of peanut sauce for $2, coming out to $19 total before tip. I'm not sure I'd consider this to be as "affordable" as they used to be known for. In my understanding, this business offers a fairly plain/bland base to the meal, and the appeal of the place is in their soups, sauces, condiments. The soup in particular is a good fit for cold and rainy Portland days, or when you're hungover. The plain chicken/tofu and rice is a good fit for picky eaters, whether they be children or in-laws. I enjoyed the straightforward ingredients and relative "healthiness" of this dish, but I'm not sure any flavors stood out. I got takeout, but the experience was similar to dining in as I believe you order at the counter and bus your own dishes. It's rustic charming inside with pops of color. The entry is shared with neighboring businesses Kinboshi and Snappy's kind of like a mini food hall.

Yelp
Small casual spot known for their namesake khao man gai (Thai chicken and rice with fresh vegetables and soup on the side). They have other things on the menu too, but I don't usually look past the khao man gai, since I love that combination of chicken and rice with their amazing sauce. I do think it was better when I first came here years ago pre-pandemic, as the chicken was a little dry on my most recent visit, but I still enjoy it. On our last visit, we also tried the mango sticky rice dessert, which was fine but not my favorite version of it. Will probably stick to the khao man gai in the future.

Yelp
Very simple and to the point business model. Chicken, rice, soup, and more. They stay busy, and they stay delicious. This definitely a must visit when in Portland.

Yelp
Food: overall amazing, few selections but great taste Service: quick and clean, self-served hot tea and water Ambiance: welcoming and casual

Yelp
Best classic take on a treasured chicken and rice dish. Food that heals the SOUL. If you're feeling under the weather and are around the area, this place is a must try. The accompanying soup is so good and the signature ginger-y sauce that pairs with the meat is perfected. Service is always warm and super quick. I'm barely sat at my seat for 3 minutes and the food is quick to arrive. The place and decor has a familiar energy to it. You're transported to a place and time any SE Asian immigrant will innately and immediately feel nostalgia for.

Yelp
First time in Portland and this was on my list. Very delicious kao man gai and fairly priced! The broth is good and so is the peanut sauce for the gai. You can wait in line to order or even quicker self-kiosk is faster. We opted for kiosk and food came out quick. Kao man gai is Thai person approved here!
google avatar

Gabrielle S.

Yelp
We came here right after a flight and it was such a cold and rainy day in Portland (so the best time to get some soup!). We got the Khao Man Gai and Souper Soup, they were fairly quick. The soup in this weather = CHEF'S KISS! The cucumber on the Khoa Man Gai were also so delectable. We sat outside and our food warmed us right up.

Yelp
Nong's is a cute place to go to! It's in this mini food strip by a Ramen restaurant and sandwich shop. The seating area is limited but there's a lot of outside seating. The service is fast! Love how attentive everyone was; I ordered the chicken peanut and I thought the sauce was good, but would love more seasoning. My plate was plain, which is nice if you'd to season everything yourself. All in all, a nice place and will definitely come back to try other things on the menu :)
google avatar

Lydia C.

Yelp
Food: fast and fresh! I chose half black and half white as regular. The rice and chickens tasted very good and not to mention the soup the only thing is missing is the traditional green and red sauce that's usually seen in Asia but this is decent! Service: the staff will serve your plates to your table, and the one that helps us is very helpful and kind. Ambiance: super casual

Yelp
The chicken was good! The pork was more up my alley. Both of the Thai iced teas were good but not the best I've ever tried. The food was yummy. It had a very home cooked, your mom just made it feel & taste. Very authentic. You order at the counter, take a number then find a table (if you're dining in). We got our food pretty quickly. You have to clean up after yourself once you're finished. Cute little place tucked away. I never realized Nong's was right by Snappy's and Kinboshi ramen. Not much dining space inside but they have tables outside still. Overall, it was a good experience. Glad I tried it. I would definitely come back to eat the pork again or try other dishes.

Christina K.

Yelp
Nice local eatery. Nothing fancy but nice and bright. Beautiful music in the background. Indoor and outdoor seating. Friendly and very quick service. Our food was hot and tasty! Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Karen S.

Yelp
Simple menu, everything is delicious. Love the super soup when I'm under the weather or craving comfort food. Often order the Khao Man Gai with crispy chicken skin on the side. The pork dish has richer, bolder flavors when you are looking for that. Most everything is gluten-free friendly if that matters to anyone in your party. Simply food, quality ingredients, cooked really well.

Yelp
Love the hole in the wall vibes here and that its dog friendly at the patio seating. I came for a quick stop during a roadtrip looking for a nutritional asian meal and this was the perfect spot for it. The food however was a bit more disappointing than expected as I wish some chicken skin came without being of extra charge, and the piset (large size khao man gai) came with more veggies like the peanut one. The peanut one felt way too dry as the rice was plain white rice unlike the seasoned rice of the regular version and the sauce was very thick. Having the gingery fish sauce of the regular dish if you are able to eat it would be my recommendation so that you avoid flavor fatigue. We also got the thai iced float and i think it was very meh for lacking the thai tea flavor, the volume (i maybe got a good 4 sips of thai tea of it), the taste of icecream not being as flavorful or creamy. i wouldnt get it again. You buss your own table here afterwards but i can tell the previous customers didnt properly clean up after themselves because every single outdoor table had either food, used utensils or plates left behind :( i wish the customers were better about bussing their own tables here. Theres a lot of flies by the bussing station which is kind of close to the tables so if you don't like that, this may not be the right place for you.

Yelp
Nice little spot with plenty of seating both indoors and outdoor. It also had a sauce fridge that has different soy sauces, chili oils, garlic, and ginger. We ordered the larger version of the chicken and rice as well as the pork and rice. The chicken was very soft and the sauce provided a rich flavor to the dish. When wanting a more subtle flavor, you have the rice and then the broth on the side to sip on. The pork was drenched in sauce and so tender and full of umami which the rice and greens soaked up. It came with a hot sauce that I wasn't quite sure what to do with but tasted like Tabasco. Staff were super friendly and brought our dishes to us with the number we got. Other than that, it's all self serve/bus so you can grab your own water and then clean up your plates when you're done.
google avatar

Yelp
Actually the best meal in Portland. I dream of the chicken&rice and the peanuts tofu dish. They have amazing service. Ice cream is top tier too! There can be a line/ it is hard to find a seat but otherwise amazing.
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
Their chicken dish is a staple in Portland. It tastes nothing like normal Thai dishes and is really flavorful without being heavy like normal Thai dishes. Very light and similar to hainese chicken. Their Thai tea and Thai coffee were not good lol
google avatar

Sandy H.

Yelp
Street parking. Indoor and outdoor seating. Order at the counter with staff or on the kiosk. Take a number and find your seat. Staff will bring your food to your table. Hot tea is available for free. Chili sauce and other condiments are available in a tiny fridge. Ordered the large khao man gai with a side of fried chicken skins. The sauce that comes with the dish has a tiny kick to it. Winter melon soup paired well with the dish. Chicken was tender. Bus your own table at the end.

Yelp
Nong's is Portland comfort. Not that it needs another review, but this is just to emphasize the reputation Nong's has in the food scene in Portland. Nong's is simple and straight to the point - chicken and rice. Is it the best chicken and rice you'll everrrr have? No. But Nong's does it right and it is consistent and good everyyy time. I love Nong sauce and while it's hard to pinpoint the exact taste, it is like a soy sauce-peanut-chili-vinegar blend that is savory, sweet, tangy, and a bit spicy, I love their Super Soup, it is their chicken soup with rice, chicken, and vegetables. It is the perfect sick soup or just soup for all the cold Portland days. I recommend all my visiting friends to go to Nong's, and they have yet to be disappointed. Nong's is consistent, and in 2025, consistency is sexy. Nong's is great, Nong's is good, Nong's can do no wrong! Next time your chicken and rice meal prep gets boring, you know where to go.

Yelp
Perhaps I am thinking of Hainan Chicken, but the Thai version is not close. No skin, the meat is just blanched so it doesn't have all the aromatics like it should have. The rice also lacks the oomph and punch from chicken essence (aka, fat). Soup was also very average. The sauce for the chicken, I guess I am not used to it. However once I added a lot of ginger and the sauce to the meat and the rice (eat it together with cilantro), it tasted better (perhaps that is the magic combination). Free liver on the side which was nice. I can see why this place is highly rated but it is average for me.
google avatar

Neelu Y.

Yelp
My dad and I love Hainanese chicken rice and were excited to see how the Thai version would compare. We stopped by for dinner and ordered the Khao Man Gai, Khao Kha Muu, and Thai Tea Float. We decided to sit outside since it was pretty busy inside. The only downside was that occasionally it was a bit stinky whenever the breeze picked up. Next time I'd try to sit inside. While the Khao Man Gai was delicious, we both agreed that we prefer the Hainanese version more. Surprisingly, of the two dishes we ordered, we both preferred the Khao Kha Muu (pork). It was very tender, juicy and flavorful. The Thai Tea Float was great as well, but wasn't as strong as we expected. I'll definitely be back for the Khao Kha Muu the next time I'm visiting!

Yelp
THE best chicken and rice I ever had !! aka KHAO MAN GAI also got the braised pork (KHAO KHA MUU), equally delicious. the homemade sauces are bombb and definitely elevate the dishes. Also amazing story of the owner -- from an immigrant with $70 to a small food cart to now multiple restaurants -- so proud! Also big kudos to being able to expand and still keep the food authenticity. Food came out so quick! Appreciate the little details too such as free yummy tea and the cute packaging on the wrapper and bag (: A must eat if you're in Portland!!
google avatar

Yelp
4.5 stars for Nong's!! I placed a delivery order for Nong's and everything was still delicious upon arrival! I will say I was a little surprised that my meal came wrapped with parchment paper because I didn't know they do to-go orders like that, but I didn't have any issues eating anything. I ordered the piset khao man gai, mango sticky rice (summer special) and thai iced tea. khao man gai was delicious! there was plenty of chicken and I wish I ordered more rice on the side. The star of the show was definitely the mango sticky rice! It was soooo so good and they definitely don't skimp on the mangoes. Lastly was the thai iced tea, which I -.5 stars for because it wasn't the best ive had and had an after taste. Overall i'll be back and would love to eat at the restaurant to get everything fresh!

Yelp
Atmosphere: Simple, casual atmosphere with some outdoor tables Food: The Khao Man Gai was good. Broth was very tasty. Chicken and Rice was simple but good. Maybe a little overhyped for being a fairly standard dish, but it was good. The chilis added some definite kick Price: Around $17 for the large Khao Man Gai. It's pretty filling portion Service: Friendly staff at counter. You go to counter to order and they bring it out to you. Bus your table after. Parking: street parking. Can be a little crowded in the area at times
google avatar

Ivan K.

Yelp
The food here is always so comforting. Every time I feel like I'm getting sick or sad I get soup from here. The chicken is good quality which I appreciate. The broth is flavorful without being too salty. The veggies are always crunchy and never mushy. I can't say much about service or ambience because I've always done take outs.
google avatar

Bebe C.

Yelp
Well known for simple Hainin chicken and rice, and very consistent in flavor and portions. Rice with special chicken marinade was very flavorful
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Nong's KMG only has a few items and they're really good with it! After ordering, you get a number and find your own seat either inside or outside. I ordered the #2 which is a large portion of the chicken rice. There's also a sauce bar containing sweet soy sauce, soy sauce, chili, and ginger in a little fridge that you can use. Overall, the chicken is juicy and cooked well. The rice was a little plain and the soup was just a vegetable soup. Overall with the sauces and main dish, everything was flavorful. The ginger lemonade was very gingery but delicious. The Thai tea can be made with coconut milk if you prefer a non dairy Thai tea.

Yelp
A friend of mine is in town visiting from Mexico and she said she wanted to have Asian food for lunch. She specifically said she wanted "soup and rice". So my husband and I decided to take her to Nong's because we haven't been in awhile and it's my husband's favorite spot. It was pretty busy when we showed up around 1pm but luckily we were able to find a table to sit right away. It's a walk-up and order/bus your own table type of restaurant and they give you a number to place at your table. Water is also self-serve. The restaurant is small and has Asian music playing in the background. Staff was super patient and super friendly. Everyone was so happy, chatting amongst one another and laughing. The food is so good and such great comfort food. My husband and I bought got white meat with our meal and my friend got dark meat. Our dishes also came with a small bowl of broth. The rice is also cooked in the broth so it has a little flavor but each of our plates came with a soybean/ginger sauce for the chicken that everyone loves. My friend loved it so much that she purchased 2 bottles to take home with her to Mexico.
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
I would recommend getting their OG chicken and rice with extra sauce. That sauce was something special and packed with flavor. The chicken was nice and juicy, the soup was heart warming. Everything about the dish was just perfect. The peanut chicken was good too though I'd recommend getting their original chicken and rice. The restaurant had a very cool vibe and the self service tea was a nice addition. Definitely have to check this place out!
google avatar

Jeremy R.

Yelp
I feel like this place is an obligatory stop when coming to Portland. I feel like getting your Hainanese Chicken Rice is a must. This location is a lot larger than their Pearl District location and has more seating. Sharing is caring when you're food touring Portland and so sharing the large combo was a great way to try it all. Chicken and rice were flavorful, this was our first time ordering the peanut sauce on the side, it gave a different flavor profile and it was delicious. The sauce is always great too. Fried chicken skin was nice and crispy, and the steam veggies made me feel somewhat more healthy, hahahaha! You bus your own tables, however, when you receive your food, the wait staff were really nice and friendly, they were constantly picking up the bins with the plates so they kept it real clean. Service on the inside was great too, staff helped with picking out the right things to order. As always, always delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
After 10+ years of hearing about Nong's and saying we'd try it next time during each visit to Portland, my husband and I finally decided to give in. I had high expectations for this place because of all the hype around it, but was not impressed. The rice was overcooked and the chicken was bland. The sauce was good though and necessary to give the dish life. My husband ordered the chicken rice and peanut sauce dish. It's your typical peanut sauce but the dish comes with broccoli, which was also overcooked and very limp. Indoor seating is limited, they have covered picnic tables outside, and street parking only.
google avatar

Abbe K.

Yelp
A wonderful spot to get warm, deeply flavored broth and a side of veggies, too, broccoli with the greens and stalks. The service was quick, the tables clean, and the white-meat chicken and rice was prepared perfectly. Slightly sticky rice and moist chicken. I'll be back!
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
I've been going to Nong's ever since she opened her cart in Downtown. Today was the first time I ordered the often recommended Pork and Rice. Delicious! The pickled greens, "relish", and dipping sauce complemented the meal well. Use the chili sauce sparingly as it's hotter than the usual. What I couldn't stomach were the dense mushroom pieces, yuck. But this is more on me than them. The setup is inviting and hot tea is free! Parking is a bear.
google avatar

Yelp
This place has it all. Got a large #2 chicken plate with a side of veggies. The broth and rice were excellent. The chicken was slightly dry but the amazing sauce makes up for it - it's a bit gingery and has a kick to it. Add a wing into the broth for $1 is a steal. They were out of fried chicken skin so couldn't try it. Also tried the soup noodles with bitter melon. If you like bitter melon you'll like this soup. Portion was reasonable for the price. Lastly, you must get the coconut ice cream. They sprinkle toasted coconut flakes and it just hits the spot after the chicken meal. Note that the chili condiments are super spicy!!! Also there's free tea, garlic, and ginger condiments. They keep it in a mini fridge and it's self-serve. You also bus your own table. Packed on a Friday night around 6pm. Would definitely come here again!

Ryan B.

Yelp
Lived up to the hype. Our family of 7 shared the Giant Chicken and Rice. The sauce made it!!!

Yelp
we have eaten at Nong's for over a decade- it's always good, fresh, healthy, simple, quality ingredients prepared well. Recently, we've started getting side orders of chicken and broth, to use as ingredients for things we cook at home. Simplifies my life and saves tons of time. tortilla soup. chicken salad. chicken mole. chicken sandwich, chicken casserole. Nong's chicken is moderately priced and works great with any recipe that calls for chicken as an ingredient.

Yelp
I think this place is overhyped. It's not bad food, it tastes like some simple breakfast or lunch food a mom would make. No wild flavors which I kind of like so it seemed a bit bland to me. I was most disappointed w/ their signature dish, just plain chicken & rice. Comes w/ some peanuty sauce for a bit of flavor, but still just too bland for me. Your white grandma would like it tho. I thought the Pork & rice dish was a tad better, mostly cause of the chili vinegar sauce it came with. Their new special Bitter Melon soup was pretty good. Like a more tasty chicken noodle soup. I liked that u can add on some chicken liver or skins but the liver didn't come w/ any salt & I liked the street cafe vibe. it's counter service and they'll bring ur food & u bus ur table. It's a small building that is shared w/ 2 other shops.

Yelp
Overall Thoughts: I had high hopes for this popular spot, but was ultimately disappointed. It specializes in its namesake, khao man gai, which I ordered and is basically the Thai version of Chinese Hainanese chicken rice. However, the chicken was disappointingly dry. The soup was light and aromatic, but I wish the flavor/saltiness was stronger. I also got a side of peanut sauce, which was a good move that gave additional flavor to the chicken/rice. I liked both sauces a lot-- the peanut sauce was creamy and robust in flavor, and the ginger sauce that came with the dish was lighter and tangy. If only the chicken were more tender, this dish would've been very solid. The prices were reasonable ($15), and I was quite full afterwards even with the normal portion size. It was quite crowded at 12:30pm on a weekday, but I was able to find one of the few empty stool seats facing the window. There was no line when I came and the food came out fast, but by the time I finished around 1pm, the line grew longer and there were people waiting for seats. Overall, they could've had an off-dish/day, but I personally don't think the food here is worth the hype. -- Price (relative to peers): 4.3/5 Food: 3.2/5 Ambience: 4.6/5 Service: 4.5/5 Overall Value: 3.5/5

Yelp
What's up: After all the drinks, we were starting to get hungry! My friends had previously ate at this place on a previous visit and wanted to come back to get more of their yummy food. I also noticed that fellow Yelpers recommended this place, so let's see!! Parking: Street parking. Environment: The place was busy when we arrived. Process is to place your order at the counter or at the self order kiosk. Grab your number and then proceed to grab a table (indoor or outdoor); you can also grab your own sauces/chilis and hot tea or ice water from a side counter. Food does come out fairly quick and a staff member will bring your food out when ready. Restrooms are through the door, down the hall (look for the sign). What was ordered: - Khao Man Gai (chicken and rice, tasty) - Khao Kha Muu (pork and rice, good) Yay/Nay/Meh: Yay. Overall, the food was good. You get a bowl of soup to accompany your food but other than that, it's pretty much no frills and self serve. Credit cards are accepted.

Yelp
So good! Could not get enough of their chicken and their peanut sauce. Great place for a quick eat. Thai lime iced tea was refreshing.
