Looking for the right balance between affordable and luxurious when booking a hotel can sometimes feel impossible, and I thought we'd found it in 62 Castle Street.
A short distance from Lime Street Station and only 5 minutes around the corner from 'the shops', it's a great location if you want to be central. The exterior is unassuming, leading you into a lovely reception area - the kind where the receptionist is at a desk rather than a form of large podium, with lots of high backed leather chairs and the radio playing quietly in the background. Check in was simple, and we took the lift to our room.
The room itself was super impressive, with huge windows, and a small step down to the 'lounge' area from 'the bedroom'. Nice bath toiletries were provided, and a tray of coffee/tea/hot chocolate and some oaty biscuits. The bedding was the kind that you never want to get out of, and large statement mirror for when you're getting ready.
Unfortunately, we also found a number of flaws in the experience, hence the three stars. It was a super dark room (as in no main lights, leading us to flicking basically all the switches to try and discover what controlled what), and really noisy from both the hallway and room next door. The sink felt really low, and we were both taller than the showerhead, which was just frustrating. Free wifi is available, but was inconsistent throughout the stay.
Doors are locked after 10.30pm, but there's always someone on duty to let guests in, plus a phone number on the door if you can't see anyone at the reception desk. Interesting to find in a city centre hotel, and good to know that they're conscious of safety.
With so many hotel options in the city, I think we'll be trying somewhere else for our next visit.
