14 Plaques That Will Make You Smile

"Baltimore, Maryland, is a self-described “City of Firsts,” and one of the most esoteric of these pioneering actions is the naming of the classic occult game the Ouija Board, which happened in a boarding house that now houses a 7-Eleven. According to Charles Kennard, the first to manufacture the Ouija board, the “Mystifying Oracle” received its name in April of 1890 at 529 North Charles Street when he, Elijah Bond, patentee of the board, and Helen Peters, a strong medium who would later prove to the Patent Office that the board worked, asked the board what it wanted to be called. The seance occurred in Bond’s rooms in what at that time was a boarding house known as the Langham Hotel located at 529 North Charles. Today, that building still stands, but now it is home to a decidedly less magical 7-Eleven convenience store. For years, all trace of the event that created a entire brand of fun occult devices had been wiped away and all but forgotten, save for the efforts of Ouija history superhero, Robert Murch, founder of The Talking Board Historical Society.   In 2015, Murch and the Talking Board Historical Society worked with the city of Baltimore and got authorization to install a plaque in the 7-Eleven that remembered and told the story of Ouija history on the spot. They originally planned to install the plaque during a Ouija convention, but the unfortunate riots that took place in the city that year saw the 7-Eleven ransacked. Undaunted, once the convenience store was put back in order, Murch was finally able to have the plaque installed. Today you can visit the 7-Eleven and see the historic plaque describing the events of that fateful night that changed the game of popular occultism. For more on the story of the naming of the Ouija board, read our article on it here.  (OUIJA and MYSTIFYING ORACLE are both registered trademarks of Hasbro, Inc.)" - ATLAS_OBSCURA

How is this store always closed? Just permanently shut down and let another store operate here! Complete waste of space! In there just standing around talking on the phone! Avoid going to this 7/11 it’s the worse one in Baltimore! ZERO STARS

Very unique 7-eleven being in a pretty historical looking building at the bottom of the monument. Very cool. Also the ouija board was named here!

The staff is always so nice and I think the store is clean and they do a good job

It says this store is open 24 hours but its honestly not which is disappointing to say the least

Google says they're 24 hours, but they close st midnight.

There's a cashier at this location who purposefully rings up your items in a way that does not include your rewards after you put in your phone number or scan the bar code. This has happened on multiple occasions. If it's happening to other people, tons of people are getting ripped off thinking they are getting "deals". He also charged me for two slices of pizza after telling me there was only one slice available.

Tired of this place closing at random hours even though there are cashiers inside. It’s literally 1030 pm. This happened occasionally before, and usually after 12 am. lately it’s become very frequent and is happening as early as 10pm.

Work right around the corner. Never had any problems until today. Went in and the cashier had her toddler asleep on her back as she worked. Forgot my mask in my office and saw others in the store including an employee with no mask. I thought it would be okay as I was just running in for chicken real quickly. When I got inside the cashier was helping a customer with no mask on. As I looked at the hot food case, there was absolutely nothing but 4 Jamaican beef patties. NOTHING ELSE. I asked her if there was any chicken and she said no, then proceeds to assist another customer with NO mask. Why then did she turn to me all they way across the store and tell me I need a Mask???? First of all, she should not be working with her child on her back! Second if a mask is mandatory, then it needs ti be followed across the board. I left without buying anything after I told her she was wrong for singling me out. Will not go back if she is there. and have spread the word to co-workers in my office and the office next door. Terrible experience.

Yelp
Standard 7-Eleven. Lottery, prepared foods, newspapers, soda, beer, snacks, etc... One thing to be aware of - probably due to zoning laws, the signage for this place is tiny, so you need to know where it is or you'll probably walk right past it (like I did). Friendly counterman gave quick service, but only after he assisted a customer buying $60 of lottery tickets. In downtowns of modern America, if there is no bodega, if there is no market, 7-Eleven has become a trusted touchstone for the items we need. This one is like most of the other ones I've been to - well-stocked and convenient. A convenience store, indeed.

Yelp
This 7-Eleven is always dirty, it just feels icky when you go in it. It's unfortunate that it is so unkept especially since it's by the beautiful Washington monument. If you just need a packaged snack though it will do the job. And the service is friendly.

Yelp
This location has gone downhill in the past few years. It used to be clean, with decent employees and well-stacked shelves. Now it's way too crowded, cluttered and chaotic. People from the street follow you inside soliciting money or purchases. The theft situation is so bad that unless you show up dressed in a suit and tie, the staff eyes you suspiciously. I believe a security guard could help cut down on problems and make this a friendly store again.

Yelp
This is quite possibly the worst 7-11 I have ever patronized. Something is ALWAYS broken! Coffee, tea on tap hasn't been available for months. The other coffee machines near the register are typically down. Now, the beverage refrigerator is broken - no cold drinks. Sometimes the fountain machine has no carbonation. As for the register, in many instances, they don't have cash on hand and will not accept cash. Receipts sometimes aren't available as well. They've had many, many employees with poor customer service skills over the years. I would encourage you to visit the other location at 1020 Park Avenue.

Yelp
Not open 24 hours. Nothing wrong with this location except that the listing is dishonest about the times it is open. I've lived in the neighborhood for 7 years and I've never seen this open past 1/1:30am. Just got turned away at 2:07am. Again, nothing wrong with the service here, the times listed as open are just deeply inaccurate.

Yelp
I live across the street from this 7-Eleven and got accused of stealing because my glasses was in one pocket and my money in the other, made me empty out the other without a police present and found nothing in my pockets that belongs to the store. This was my coffee and cream etc. stop because it is just across the street from the senior building where I live. I had made my coffee, got the donut that I like and a small bag of small bag of pistachios nuts and was ready to pay but as soon as I arrived at the counter to pay, that's when the search began in front of everyone in the store!! The little small bag of pistachios was taken from the top of my rollator by the person working behind the counter to pretend like I was trying to steal . I looked for the small bag of nuts, he had removed it from the top of my rollator and took it behind the counter so it would appear that I was stealing. This happens around about 10: 10-10:15? something Saturday, 5-11-2024. Two African Americans women was in the store at the time and was very unhappy in the way I was treated and wanted to go back into the store for me with the money I was going to use to pay for my products. I have been going to this store location for years! Not any more . To be accused of thief in front of people being a senior citizen living right across the street in historic MT. Vernon risking losing my apartment over a couple of dollars? And then he made me empty my pockets and nothing came out but my glasses and my money to pay for what I want. If I had waited a few more minutes the market in my building would have been open and I could have gotten the donut there and cream for my coffee because I had ran out, that is why I went there in the first place. Just was not my day!! This store has been having problems for years. I remember when the 7-Eleven was a fun place to go!, Not not more. garrettdelores9@gmail.com. Westminister Sr. Apartment.

Yelp
Worst customer service I have ever witnessed in my entire life. Absolutely ridiculous! Guy was extremely rude and disrespectful, it says they are open 24 hours, I arrive at 1am and the door is locked. The guy looks at me then goes back on his tablet, we knock on the door, saying that it is supposed to be open 24hrs. You would think a GROWN MAN would not leave a young lady outside in the dark at 1am, or at least tell me hey we are closed (although they are supposed to be open 24 hours). NEVER shop here. After this I will not give these people a single penny I have. If there was a zero star rating, I would rate it zero stars, but even a zero is too generous for the atrocity of the service. The only words that come to mind when I think of the customer service here is abominable, odious, ghastly, appalling, and just plain horrendous. If you cannot abide by your company hours of staying open, then maybe you should not be working there at all.

Yelp
Very small. Not the cleanest. Staff isn't very helpful or friendly. The location isn't the greatest either but not the worst. Usually isn't many people so you can get in and get out fast.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Just moved to the area, and all I had with me was a credit card and debit card. I read online from the 7/11 guidelines that they are one of two providers who offered money orders for credit and debit cards. I asked two of the clerks if they did money orders for debit/credit cards, and they refused. I asked if this was just their store's policy or if the corporate office was not offering the service. They started screaming. "We told you we aren't going to do it! Leave! We have worked here for years and never did that. We aren't going to start now, so stop wasting our time. Why are you still asking?! Come back when you have cash!" Several witnesses nearby were in awe, and two offered to corroborate should I file a report. Horrendous service. Would never go back.

Yelp
(03/11/2012) We get that corporations are evil and modernity has destroyed the historic charm of Baltimore's Mount Vernon, but the 7-Eleven is here and it is what it is supposed to be: convenient. A friend talked me into a post-St. Patrick's parade binge snack, the infamous Beef Patty. It was cheap ($1.39), warm and pretty tasty. They only had the "mild" that day, but still, the meat filling was highly seasoned with black and cayenne pepper, maybe garlic powder and some cumin, and of course, salt; the pastry crust was yellow with tumeric and hint of curry powder, was tender, somewhat elastic-y. Man, if only the things came deep-fried... * next up, the anatomically defying Buffalo Chicken Roller.

Yelp
Convenient to my house and always there when I need it. This location used to be the old Buttery Restaurant when I was a kid, but you'd never know it by the renovations that they've done. It's a standard 7-11, not great and not bad. It's good when I'm in the Charles Street area and need a quick snack or a drink - which is exactly what it's designed to be. Sure, it's a modern eyesore next to historic monuments, but so was the Buttery when it was there and no one ever bitched about that, so as far as I'm concerned, I'm okay with it being there. It serves its purpose, especially when the next closest 24/7 convenience store is on Calvert and Eager and a pain for Peabody students to get to. You won't be able to get to it when there's a major event going on down on Charles Street, such as the Baltimore Book Fair or the St. Patrick's Day parade, because it's always mobbed - be aware.

Yelp
I'm a 7-11 junkie because I always get twizzlers and cheeseburgers from there. The customer service at this one is pretty good. It's quick. They're friendly. I wish they had more food though.

Yelp
7-11 is a couple of blocks from our apartment. It's a good little convenience store, and for what it is always manages to stock some kind of option or alternative for what I'm really looking for. For instance, they don't carry anything organic, but when you're in a bind for a fresh pizza, eggs or milk at 12:30am, 7-11 is a dependable provider of the basics. They get 3 stars because in comparison to WaWa, Circle-K or Hot Spar in Japan, I'd actually stop at those places regularly to get delicious, fresh, vegetarian healthy food and drinks regularly.

Yelp
Here's a new convenience store near the Washington Monument. Convenient, but a bit of an eye sore at night against the nightscape near the monument.
