My Top 9 Hostels in Sydney for 2025

"Just steps from the central train station and Chinatown (with a tram stop out front), I like 790 on George for its fully stocked communal kitchen, free breakfast, two common rooms (a games room and a TV room), and organized social events. Checkout is late (11am) which is convenient, and they offer plenty of day trips (for an extra cost) like whale watching and Blue Mountains tours — it’s a no-frills option that delivers a lot of value." - Matthew Kepnes

790 George Hostel is the definition of “it does the job and does not apologize for it”. My room looked like it had seen some things, definitely dated, but it was clean and the AC worked like a champion. That alone puts it above half the hostels on Earth. The staff is the real MVP here. Super friendly, actually helpful, and they kept fixing the eternal problems with washers and dryers like they were running a mini superhero team. Seriously, they smile while doing laundry maintenance. That deserves a medal. Breakfast is complimentary in the most literal sense. Cereal or a sandwich with chocolate spread or jam. Coffee and tea pretending to be enough to wake you up. It will not blow your mind, but it will keep you alive. If you need a bed in the center of Sydney and you are traveling on a budget, this place is perfect. Nothing fancy, nothing fake, just a solid sleep with great people running the show.

The price was affordable and the location is very close to Central Station. I don’t understand why some people gave bad ratings. My personal experience was really good. The room was clean, had a locker inside, and the lift worked perfectly. Overall, I was happy with my stay and would definitely come back!

We stayed for 3days, 2nights. Place is very conveniently located. It’s near the light rail transit, basically in front of the entrance. The LRT travels to circular quay which is the place to go for first time travelers, I guess. Central Station is a walking distance as well.||We stayed in a 3 bed room of the dormitory. Room is adequate for our huge luggages, bed is comfortable, toilet is separate for males and females. The free continental breakfast is served in a kitchen, huge and clean||A minor hiccup though is you have to be very fast in bringing down your luggages if your taking Uber or Didi as there is no proper side parking

Location, affordability, staff, and free breakfast is all great! But, doesn’t make up for the outdated & prison-like vibe. Not much of an engaging social scene. Many in this hostel seemed to be working and/or not interested in other people. Wouldn’t recommend to others unless other hostels are booked-up. Sorry 790. : (

At 6:00 PM on September 5th, I was at the reception desk taking photos of my surroundings for my booking.com review. One of the two receptionists (the one facing the reception desk to the right) was rude, questioning why I was taking photos and demanding that I remove any potentially unsightly features of her. In reality, her ugly appearance wasn't photo-worthy at all. Again, the hotel is excellent in every way. I've read many unkind, even negative, reviews before. However, the hotel itself is quite good. After all, you get a certain level of service tantamount to your payment. There’s always the uncivilized manners of some staff that could definitely sabotage the hotel's reputation.

I stayed there for a while... Every day there was a different issue. The elevator only works about 3 days a week (there are 7 floors and many adults staying in the hostel). Yesterday I found a sign outside my room about a supposed pest control, but no one explained why or what was happening, maybe it’s just routine, but for how much we pay here it would be nice to have the services working 100%. Despite all the problems, there is never a price reduction, not even for those who have been staying here long-term, in fact, the price only goes up! Simply absurd and not recommended.

Only old asian people, they work in sydney and they live here. really boring hostel. Shower on flor 1 do not have hot water, first they give me a room but my bed wasn't made, so they went to make it, and when I came back, they hadn't changed the sheets! They just straightened them. You cant open the windows of the rooms so imagine the smell, everything is old. Is cheaper than other hotels? Yes, but better pay a little more and go to a better one.

Stayed at this hostel for 2 nights back in April (inbetween trips). The thing is that I have stayed in that area before but not in this specific hostel, it's a great location right in front of the tram and so close to central. I liked it at first, theres lifts, the room was quite comfortable and spacious, having your own power outlet and light is a must for me which was good. The kitchen is alright and spacious and they offer some things for breakfast which is nice. Now with the bad. The thing that left me feeling a little robbed was that on the second night it rained a lot and apparently it damaged the water heater. When I went to reception to ask the girl was super apologetic and told me they would fix it first thing in the morning. It was cold and I had to shower with cold water. Next morning I was checking out at 9 because I was taking a 9 hour flight to Asia. When I asked in the reception they told me they would fix the water at 10am. Again, had to shower with cold water. It's okay and these things happen, but I tried speaking with a supervisor and sending an email to complain and they literally never replied. I payed full fare for night where I didn't have access to a hot shower. I wasn't even asking for a full refund, but it felt like they didn't even care. Hopefully they'll improve their customer service.

Yelp
I was just after a warm bed for myself and two others. Unfortunately the windows were shut with no way to open them, the air conditioning wouldn't stay on more than two seconds and the room was hot and stifling with no air flow. The beds were fine, the pillows lumpy, and there were no curtains to keep out the light and noise. I've slept in worse, but I've also slept in better, even at these cheap rates. It did the job, and no more.

Yelp
This is one of the worst backerpacker I ever bin in one of my room mate piss in the bed so we told them and there solutions was to give clean sheets and make him sleep bed and make have to put up with the piss smell they and not change the bed yet. They don't change the duvet for new people they just fold the duvet I've seen four people sleep with the sameone. The don't clean you vacuum maybe three time a week.

Yelp
Awesome alternative to the (more expensive) YHA next door. Clean, friendly, and convenient. As a bonus, the basement kitchen is huge. Also, there's a Global Gossip on the bottom floor and Wanderers Travel is just around the corner (the 790 on George entrance is actually on Rawson).

Yelp
Excellent value & great location. Staff were friendly, place was clean & beds were comfy. The only complaint was the noise of people throughout the night. Must remember my ear plugs next time. Would def stay here again. Very impressed.
