My Top 9 Hostels in Sydney for 2025

"Just steps from the central train station and Chinatown (with a tram stop out front), I like 790 on George for its fully stocked communal kitchen, free breakfast, two common rooms (a games room and a TV room), and organized social events. Checkout is late (11am) which is convenient, and they offer plenty of day trips (for an extra cost) like whale watching and Blue Mountains tours — it’s a no-frills option that delivers a lot of value." - Matthew Kepnes

790 George Hostel is the definition of “it does the job and does not apologize for it”. My room looked like it had seen some things, definitely dated, but it was clean and the AC worked like a champion. That alone puts it above half the hostels on Earth. The staff is the real MVP here. Super friendly, actually helpful, and they kept fixing the eternal problems with washers and dryers like they were running a mini superhero team. Seriously, they smile while doing laundry maintenance. That deserves a medal. Breakfast is complimentary in the most literal sense. Cereal or a sandwich with chocolate spread or jam. Coffee and tea pretending to be enough to wake you up. It will not blow your mind, but it will keep you alive. If you need a bed in the center of Sydney and you are traveling on a budget, this place is perfect. Nothing fancy, nothing fake, just a solid sleep with great people running the show.

Its a really solid hostel. Nothing flash, but very functional and meets your basic needs. Props to the young aussie lady and two dudes with cool hair styles for running a tight ship and been ultra helpful and friendly on the reception desk. Also the other woman with a dope playlist and good fashion sense. And props to the housekeeping team, its a thankless jobs but you guys look like you actually enjoy it and the cleanliness and team camaraderie didn't go amiss. (Sorry don't know names) Shout out to Magna too the in house magician with a paint brush. The place has character and your not served my robots or zombies. Also unlike Azzuro Darling Harbour this place isn't falling apart and with foul smelling drains. Breakfast is cheap and cheerful, bed frames squeaky but beds nice and comfy, ample storage space in locker and decent showers designed in a way that doesn't flood the entire floor after only a few uses, unlike many other hostel I stayed in. Room always felt fresh and air con worked fine. Great central location a minutes walk from Central Station and Chinatown. With World Square Coles and Market City eateries and shops close by. And the light rail line running parallel to hostel. Would definitely recommend for short or medium term stays on a budget. :) Will stay again if I return to Sydney. Keep up the good work!

I appreciated that the staff were friendly and the bedsheets and toilets were clean. However, there is a relative lack of amenities and comfort, which is reflected in the lower price of this hostel compared to others. Each floor had two toilets and two showers, but 1 of the toilets on my floor was spoilt. There is only 1 elevator for the whole building meaning that sometimes I had to wait fairly long to go up / down. The only charging ports were in the lockers, which made it inconvenient to use my phone. Don’t get me wrong, this hostel does do the basics unapologetically, but if you have budget I’d recommend paying more for a better hostels.

You can practically taste the air in this place. The windows do not open and appear to have not been for years, it’s stale and grim. I understand it’s a budget hostel but this isn’t okay. WiFi works in some parts in the hostel but did not function in the room at all. If you are a young backpacker steer well clear, you will not meet any like minded people, it is well worth paying a bit extra and staying in nomads. Kudos to them for offering free pizza, but the run down outdated prison like rooms, grim smell, and crap WiFi makes it a waste of money. Whilst the NYE period justifies higher prices, just shy of 1000 AUD is an absolute robbery for a place like this. Staff are helpful and location good though

Checking in out staff are relaxed & very helpful. Basement laundry area was lacking in ventilation, consequently rather smelly as you exited elevator to head to kitchen. Self serve cereals & bread for toasting at breakfast with typical Australian spreads was as good as expected - better than some budget hotels. I Twin bunk bed had linen that was too narrow & the quilt/doona barely covered the double bed sized mattress.

The price was affordable and the location is very close to Central Station. I don’t understand why some people gave bad ratings. My personal experience was really good. The room was clean, had a locker inside, and the lift worked perfectly. Overall, I was happy with my stay and would definitely come back!

We stayed for 3days, 2nights. Place is very conveniently located. It’s near the light rail transit, basically in front of the entrance. The LRT travels to circular quay which is the place to go for first time travelers, I guess. Central Station is a walking distance as well.||We stayed in a 3 bed room of the dormitory. Room is adequate for our huge luggages, bed is comfortable, toilet is separate for males and females. The free continental breakfast is served in a kitchen, huge and clean||A minor hiccup though is you have to be very fast in bringing down your luggages if your taking Uber or Didi as there is no proper side parking

Google
Location, affordability, staff, and free breakfast is all great! But, doesn’t make up for the outdated & prison-like vibe. Not much of an engaging social scene. Many in this hostel seemed to be working and/or not interested in other people. Wouldn’t recommend to others unless other hostels are booked-up. Sorry 790. : (

Yelp
I was just after a warm bed for myself and two others. Unfortunately the windows were shut with no way to open them, the air conditioning wouldn't stay on more than two seconds and the room was hot and stifling with no air flow. The beds were fine, the pillows lumpy, and there were no curtains to keep out the light and noise. I've slept in worse, but I've also slept in better, even at these cheap rates. It did the job, and no more.

Yelp
This is one of the worst backerpacker I ever bin in one of my room mate piss in the bed so we told them and there solutions was to give clean sheets and make him sleep bed and make have to put up with the piss smell they and not change the bed yet. They don't change the duvet for new people they just fold the duvet I've seen four people sleep with the sameone. The don't clean you vacuum maybe three time a week.

Yelp
Awesome alternative to the (more expensive) YHA next door. Clean, friendly, and convenient. As a bonus, the basement kitchen is huge. Also, there's a Global Gossip on the bottom floor and Wanderers Travel is just around the corner (the 790 on George entrance is actually on Rawson).

Yelp
Excellent value & great location. Staff were friendly, place was clean & beds were comfy. The only complaint was the noise of people throughout the night. Must remember my ear plugs next time. Would def stay here again. Very impressed.
