Wonderful rustic burgers. The burger was in a perfect bite size. Tried the Alternate Beast and 8Bit original with sides of Sweet Potato and normal chips. Love the toasted buns as it added extra crisp in each bite. Love the outermost part of the patty as it was dry and roasted. The bun was soft and sweet. Tasted pretty nice. A nice burger meal overall.

If you're in the mood for a good meal for lunch then come to 8bit. This restaurant is famous for fast food. A bit pricey but the quality is superb, probably the best in Melbourne. Bacon and cheese loaded fries were awesome!! Try it if you are around 231 Swanston St.

Lovely main street American style burger joint. Great location, however the seating leaves a lot to be desired, it's not the most comfy, I might lean more towards takeaway here. Loaded fries are a must have, it sounds like it'll be over powering but it ends up as a good balance. Very traditional styled American burgers but done well. Not too bad on value but a little pricey AND there is a credit card surcharge - be warned.

Had the Altered Beast. A very good burger and the patty was cooked a perfect medium. The beef patty was a bit thin, though... I would have preferred a thicker patty with more juice. The onion rings was beer battered but very tasty with the right amount of saltiness.

Moist, well cooked patty, nice balance of ketchup and mustard. The bun was fresh. Salad was crisp. It's a solid burger. Chips were well seasoned. Very good. This place can get busy and seating is limited. Consider yourself warned.

Google
My favourite place along Royal Stacks and The Gem to get a burger. I always go for the 8 -bit with cheese and the chilli fries and a coke which sets you back about $20. It's consistently good, but there can be a bit of a wait when it's busy.

Google
This has become one of the top burger place on my list. I love the simple and yet delicious burgers. Very similar to those famous burger franchise in US. Juicy and tender beef patty, fresh tomatoes and onions and those melted cheese. YUMS!

Had been meaning to try them out for ages given their reputation, so had pretty high expectations. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Ordered the After Burner and Potato Gems. Wait time was about 10 minutes and they brought my order to where I was sitting. The potato gems were good, but I'm pretty sure they were straight from the frozen McCains bag (but hey, still tasty and crunchy). The burger was ... ok. Patty was moist and well seasoned, bun was soft and fresh, and salad was crisp. However, the mustard completely overpowered everything else so it was hard to tell what the underlying taste was like. Sadness. Would I go back? Yes, but would probably order something else.

Yelp
We decided to visit 8Bit after constantly seeing it decked out with people. It isn't a very large place, but there are still a fair few seats. The 8Bit theme is incorporated really well with the splashes of colour and gaming-style prints. The venue is easily accessible via public transport, as it's a convenient location in the CBD. We both ordered the 'Double Dragon' burger with an added chicken patty and a side of crispy onion rings. The worker expressed surprise that we were ordering such large burgers, but we went ahead anyway. The staff members were friendly despite the busy environment. Their pricing is pretty average, as the burger cost $13.90 and the added chicken was an extra $3.50. The onion rings were priced decently too as a large serving costed $6.00. We took a seat with our restaurant pager and waited for our food to be ready. It wasn't too long before we collected our meal. The onion rings were huge! They were really hot and crispy, and the inside was more soft and doughy as they were coated in a significant amount of batter. The burgers were big and looked great. The beef patties were tasty, and the chicken was crispy. The cheese was melted really well, and tasted delicious with the 8Bit sauce. The lettuce gave a bit of freshness against all the heavy flavours in the burger. The bacon went really well with the tomato sauce and mustard. Overall, the food was pretty good, but if you really dislike the American-style greasy burger, we would advise against trying this venue. We recommend you give them a try if you are a burger fan, as they have a convenient location and great food!

Yelp
One of my pals who lives in Melbourne swears by 8Bit so I thought I'd have to give it a go - at 9:30pm on a weekday. Whoop de doo and glad I did - how convenient as well if you had late night burger cravings! I really wanted a hotdog but they were all sold out by then which is understandable. I settled the After Burner to spice things up (ha...) with japapenos, red onion and chipotle - what could possibly go wrong? Nothing. Every bite was a delight. The proportions were just right, the sauce was tasty and the patty plentiful. The chips were nicely salted as well. Lastly if you don't get anything thing at all, get the nutella milkshake. Because nutella milkshake. Decadent.

Yelp
8bit's new CBD location is in the perfect spot to get a huge amount of customers (and far easier to get to than their previous Footscray store), however if you are planning to eat in, their seemingly always packed store can be a little off putting. I finally took the plunge recently and while it was just as difficult to get a seat as I imagined it would be, we managed to luckily get one before our food came. I had their 8bit with cheese, and thought it was really nice and a good filling burger. Their chips were also quite nicer than the average chips you get in some burger stores. However I found their onion rings not so great. Their service was good, and hopefully in the future if their store quietens down a bit it'll be easier to eat in more often.

Yelp
I heard about this place when I was perusing my yelp app one afternoon, and due to the rave reviews that it got I decided to go an check it out. The problem was that the line outside was huge, and I really didn't have all that much time for lunch, so I decided to come back here for dinner recently. Well, the lines were still pretty long, and it was probably fifteen odd minutes before I got my burger, but it was certainly worth the wait. I would probably recommend you take away since there aren't a huge number of seats in here, but then again it is on Swanston Street. Once again, I've found a place that does some decent chips (along with topping) and a really good burger. I just have to find the time to wait in line.

Yelp
I've been meaning to go to 8bit in Melbourne ever since I saw it pop up on IG almost two years ago or so...it just so happened they opened up a CBD location recently so you wouldn't have to trek out to Footscray. BONUS!!!! I already had 2 burgers over the weekend but this was 2 years coming so I forced myself to down a Double 8Bit with Cheese and it was glorious...medium rare patty with great sauce and cheese...and a bun that doesn't overwhelms. Really affordable and really quick burgers with the fun gimmick to boot. Sides could use some work though, as the onion rings were battered like Little Mac in Punch Out! Just a little too much...

Kobie D.

Yelp
Probably the best quick burgers you would find be in the CBD. I had the mushroom burger and it was delicious Being fairly new to the CBD it is quite busy. I was surprised the staff don't wear hair nets too. Worth a try

Yelp
The hunt for Melbourne's best burger joint continues and sadly is far from over after a visit to 8bit's city location. I should say that my visit happened to coincide with White Night which may have affected the standard of burgers, however the issue was not with their staff or service, it was with the burger itself. The patty was just dry and overcooked - it was a rather large thin number - unlike your standard burger thic/ round concoction. I think this may have affected the end result as maybe that is the shape of their usual patties and that is what they usually cook, as the burger I was served was overcooked and nearing the point of crispy at the edges, meaning there was no taste to the burger really at all. The 8bit sauce was a welcome addition in the flavour department, however obviously nothing can really be done when the burger patty itself is a let down. I should note that despite being under the pump on white night, the staff were still happy and helpful, sadly the product just let them down in a big way, so much so that I can't see myself wanting to make a return to give them the chance to redeem themselves, especially when there are other places in the CBD that deliver on deliciousness!

Suzie R.

Yelp
8bit is a great little cheap eat right in the heart of the CBD. It's usually busy so has a good atmosphere and it's bright and funky. It's very much a quick eat/take our place so while there's not much seating it's usually possible to get a seat without too much of a wait! We had hotdogs and potato gems! Hot dogs are tasty, we had the Brit dog and wonder dog, both were yum and they are pretty big. They were happy to adjust our order slightly as my other half didn't want all the toppings on his. It's fast food, it's not fancy but is nicely presented, tastes good and is a step up from most comparable places.

Holly K.

Yelp
Really bad service. The counter staff are more interested in socialising amongst themselves and their friends that walk in than serving customers legitimately lining up at the counter. Having said that the kitchen staff are friendly and working efficiently. The wait for the food (if you can get it ordered) is around 15 minutes. The gems are surprisingly fresh and delicious (though a little salty).

Mark R.

Yelp
Should be called 2-Bit burgers. Shocking service. Ordered 2 burgers and a shake but only received 1, luckily we hadn't left the store. They then took the burger out of the bag and placed it on the counter as they couldn't identify which one they had given us. The remaining burger was ordered without an ingredient due to an allergy issue. We saw they realised they had included the ingredient and opened the burger and used their fingers to scrape off the item and then bag it for us. We highlighted the issue and they said there were sure there was no ingredient remaining. Not wanting to cause a fuss we left only to find the allergy ingredient was covered over with sauce. I liked the old school Atari shop theme but that's where the best part ended. Someone will either die or sue them. They have a great peanut shake.. The boss needs to do some quality control.

Yelp
I don't understand why the CBD location isn't as good as the 8bit in Footscray ? My food/experience was great - everything was appropriately crispy, tasty, & fresh. Yes they were busy but it was lunch time & it is the city - so that's expected. Good places are busy for a reason ! All I know is that it was so tasty that we were still trying to finish all of our food even if we were full (shared between 2 people) - it was too good to leave behind. Honestly ranked pretty high on my top 5 burger list now. Wanted to try more off their menu since they offer hot dogs, shakes & gems. So defs coming back here to have food comas for sure - 10/10.

Mercedes L.

Yelp
Don't bother with this place. I made the mistake of trying 8bit after reading several blogs giving them glowing reviews. While the employees are nice and the food arrived quickly, the quality is horrible. The onion rings were mushy and the fries were blah. The meat patty isn't terrible but the burger as a whole is not worth it. My chocolate Nutella shake was watery with fake flavors. I'd try anything else over 8bit.

Jeany L.

Yelp
Just like in Footscray, I ordered their 8bit with Cheese. My patty was slightly dry compared to the one that I had but I don't mind. Love the buttery bun!

Mem R.

Yelp
I'm gonna cry just thinking about the takeaway I got from 8Bit, but I'm gonna write this review anyway, through my tears. So a couple of weeks ago I was in Melbourne to get a tattoo and I spent six hours under the needle, out in the sticks. On the train on the way home I was on the hunt for a decent dinner meal I could grab and go with... but it was getting very late, and options were getting very scarce. Enter 8Bit and their 11pm closing time. I rocked up at 10:50pm and ordered a chicken burger, potato gems and, after some serious consultation, a peanut butter shake ("it kinda tastes a bit like a pretzel" SOLD). I diligently carted the food back to my accommodation with me via tram, and once home I unwrapped my treasures. Everything was so good. Weeping. I'm a fiend for a good chicken burger, and 8Bit's is amazing. Delicious crunchy chicken pieces rather than a huge chunk of breast were a real treat... as were the potato gems. Gems as a side at burger joints are still such a novelty for this visiting Hobartian! I LOVE GEMS. Ok, I'm ok. It's going to be ok. I'll see you again one day, 8Bit. P.S. she was right about the peanut butter shake *_*

Yelp
I was never a fan of massive queues, and the few times I found myself in the vicinity of the Footscray store, that's exactly what I was confronted with, so I had not tried an 8Bit burger until the CBD store opened. I didn't go at peak time, so I didn't have to wait long to get my burger. No mucking around this time, just the 8Bit with cheese, straight up. I have to say, it's probably the best cheeseburger I have had in a long time. The bun wasn't too heavy, the patty was flavoursome (wonder what cooking fat they use?) so all in all a tasty experience. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the exceptionally loud hip hop playing in store. It pretty much killed any chance of a conversation. Perhaps a subtle hint to get your burger and get out?

Yelp
Over the past 12months burger joints have opened up in and around the city, with most succeeding in various ways. The heart of the success, is the burger, without a great burger there is little chance of success of a great burger joint. 8bit in Melbourne CBD is a burger restaurant that, you guessed it, serves a variety of burgers and sides, as well as a selection of "gourmet hot dogs". This week I visited twice. The first venture into this funky venue I ordered the FATAL FURY with Jalapeño & Cheddar Sausage, Cheese Sauce, Chilli Beef, Jalapeños, with a side of onion rings. On paper this hot dog ticked all my taste boxes, so I was really looking forward to munching down on my Fatal Fury. Unfortunately this dog was Fatal, but not in a good way. Firstly the Jalapeño & Cheddar Sausage, had no flavour and was actually unpleasant to eat. The chilli beef was bland with little heat. The best part was the bun, but unfortunately it's bum was soggy which made it really hard to eat. So with fatality of the dog I was praying that the onion rings would save the day. Not to be. The onions itself, nice, but too much batter and undercooked. So as 8bit's core product is their burgers,I felt it only fair to go back for a second time and sample their burgers. This time I ordered the 8BIT WITH CHEESE. Beef, Tomato, Lettuce, Red Onion, Pickles, Mustard, Cheese, Ketchup, 8bit Sauce. With a side of chips. This was a step up from the hot dog. It was a good burger, but not great. I think it was the beef patty that let it down. They advertise it as being served medium, but mine was serve well done. In fact it was very well done and lacked flavour. The fries, disappointing. I got served the scraps, with only a few fries that had potato in them, the others just small chucks of over cooked chips. In a time that the burger is the flavour of the month and a great deal of good burger joints out there, 8bit just need to work on their beef patty. The only redeemable part to 8bit is the price.

Victoria F.

Yelp
Well I ordered the Korean chicken burger with siracha mayo so you would expect maybe too much flavour (if that's even possible) but unfortunately it is bland bland bland. I could only taste butter. As for the 8bit with cheese it just tasted of mustard. And was said to be a standard burger covered in grease and sauce by my partner in crime. I'll give this place a miss next time. Might be good if your really drunk Also leaves a horrible after taste and a feeling of wasted calories

Tomas Z.

Yelp
Has Melbourne reached peak burger yet!? Apparently not because 8-Bit just keeps expanding. While there are burger joints going up everywhere the team here have really gone all out on the theme and branding - this will be the most instagramable takeaway bag you will ever see! We love the fries and the burger options are slim but well made. One criticism is the sauces used which are all brought in and nothing to write home about. It would be nice to have a little more variety. Still excellent fast food. There is usually a little wait for food to come out but it's worth it. You will struggle to find a table if you have a group of more than two people so better to come here solo, as a duo or get take away and enjoy the sights on Swanston st. Yum burgers!

Sara K.

Yelp
I ordered the burger and loved it, especially the fluffy bun and succulent meat. The layout was small and cozy which I liked but you need to beware that you might end up eating your messy food at a window seat where people constantly walk by. I bought the loaded fries and it was very very spicey so if you're someone who can't tolerate spice make sure to tell them which ingredients you should disclude in your order. Overall it was a great experience and would definitely do it again!

Li K.

Yelp
Love, love, love the hot dogs! Definitely worth it! The burgers are really juicy and tasty. Really like the different selection of burgers but my favourite are the milkshakes! Seriously! They put real ingredients and not just some syrup! Hands down the best milkshakes ive ever had! The food is a bit pricy but its worth it!

Your M.

Yelp
This place is garbage! The worst place I've been to in years! The staff were very disrespectful and refused all my orders! Like HOW HARD IS IT TO SCRATCH A MANS BALLS!? Isn't the customer always right??? Horrid service! Sad!

Joanna H.

Yelp
In time this will hopefully improve to become a great place, but at the moment they need to do work on improving the visitor experience. The retro arcade décor is cute, but the lack of air-conditioning on hot days, the loud music and the staff who seem to not quite know how to take orders make it a not particularly pleasant place to visit. That's a shame because the food is pretty good. The chips are better than most burger places with a lot of flavour and just the right amount of crunch. The burger was tasty but they also follow the annoying trend of slightly under-cooking them.

Matthew P.

Yelp
The chicken Burger was damn fine. The beef burger let it down a little, abit dry. The chips recovered to deliver a solid 3.5.

Kevan W.

Yelp
Here from out of town and had craving for a burger. Wow, quite impressed by what this little hole in the wall diner offered up. Had the "Altered Beast". Waited 4 min and was delivered a piping hot, very tasty, perfectly cooked burger on a fresh bun. Damn. That was a good burger. Turn the crappy music down a bit and offer WiFi and this would be five stars. Note: didn't try anything other than that burger

Tom L.

Yelp
Awesome branding and concept. Graphics look great. Burger was a bit hard to taste, overpowered by too much salt. I will try again though

Matthew S.

Yelp
Well, I have been in the ultimate burger challenge for some time now and although I don't post them all, after some research I went to 8bit tonight and I think I have found burger eden! What is the benchmark on a burger, seeing as there are so many hit or miss places claiming they are the best, only to be disappointed, today I was liberated. In 'n Out Burger is the global benchmark for made to order, fresh produce burger and 8bit was so very close. The fact that they get that chat on the edge of the party, and whilst thin is so, so moist and flavourful, it's a great tasting patty. You can taste beef! The American cheese is authentic and fresh tomato and lettuce. If there is one element to the burger was the bun, was it the type of bun, not sure, but it appeared a little dry. That's an observation, not a criticism. The mustard, ketchup and what appeared to be another sauce, was tangy and cut through the beer and cheese - of course I had to get the Dragon (close to a double, double with bacon!!!) Overall a solid burger and arguably one of the best burgers I have had on our shores! Of course I had to get the loaded fries to close out an absolute indulgence, or perhaps gluttony! I was in food gluttony heaven.... The place is well laid out, the service is friendly and the food is prepared and delivered efficiently and with a smile. Thanks 8bit, I'll be back!

Kk K.

Yelp
This was yummy hit-the-spot junk food on the go... Definitely a step up from McDonald's and love the quirky decor and branding but it was not lose my mind good

Cassie P.

Yelp
Visiting from the states, and this place was the closest to comfort food. We have it a try and it didn't disappoint! Me and my mum had 2 altered beast burgers with both onion rings, fries , and loaded fries! 10/10 what we were looking for !

Ruth W.

Yelp
Worth trying out, burger meat could be more substantial but the flavours are good and the fries are pretty taste.

Phoebe H.

Yelp
I've visited 8bit a couple of times now and so far have not been disappointed. The food taste incredible, the staff are lovely and the whole setting is refreshing as a restaurant, but familiar as a theme, and I love that :)

Michael H.

Yelp
DON'T GO IF YOU'RE HUNGRY Burgers are delicious been there 3 times if not more 8 bit with cheese is delicious as is the altered beast Both 9/10 - 10/10 for taste. It had me licking wrapping for the delicious sauce........ If you're hungry when ordering....go somewhere else. They told me it would take 15 minutes it took 35. As tasty as it is it's small and not very filling. So if your hungry not the place to go. Taste 9/10 - 10/10 Value for money 7/10 Service 5/10

Mónica M.

Yelp
amazing succulent burgers!!! I personally loved the rare patty, means the beef was juicy and complimented the super soft bun. Only mark down is that there was way too much tomato sauce / mustard in mine!

Kirsty M.

Yelp
The best burger I have ever had in my life, bar none. The Golden Axe is where it's at, end of. Perfectly cooked, crispy chicken, so juicy and tender with all the right sauces and condiments. It was heaven. It was super busy in there but the food was brought out promptly, and I didn't even care that I was cramped in a corner staring at a forlorn piece of coleslaw on the counter - the burgers were well worth every second.

Laura H.

Yelp
Atmosphere - this is where I think they could have done better. The theme of 8bit could have been more utilised and made the environment more fun. The seating is not good as it's just the stools which are taken by people waiting for take away. Not good for groups or even couple. Quality of food - burger was good and partner had the hot dog. Both were good although not memorable. Also had the strawberry cheesecake shake and peanut butter shake and both were very good. No free tap water available which is a rarity but always a thumbs down. Value - average for area. Service - no issue.

Chris P.

Yelp
Okay I guess. I'm not sure I like how my burger was medium rare. Some people may like that but I prefer not to risk food poisoning. I hope I don't get sick. Otherwise the burger seemed fine.

Gurr S.

Yelp
Burger place with a nice vibe... There is a game arcade machine as the name of the shop suggests..the price range of the burger is around 12-14 so a lil bit expensive but the composition of the burgers are really good. I always order milkshakes because it is great. The service isnt bad either..

Raif K.

Yelp
This STRICTLY a review on their 'vegie burger' It just didnt taste nice at all...I tend to stay away from 'mushroom' patties as a rule due to them usually being a cop out but everyones been talking this place up so I thought I may as well try it. Now, I understand this isnt the usual burger and the 100s of 5 star reviews for the regular burgers say they had a way different experience. So my warning is: If you are veg, do not get this burger here...its just not good enough.

Jean L.

Yelp
Very friendly staff. Burger was disappointing as heard good things about the place. Big bun, lots of sauce but tiny lettuce and tiny beef patty. Chips were overly seasoned with salt...

George T.

Yelp
Expectations were high coming to a recommended burger joint. How disappointing it turned out. One couldn't tell the difference between the 8bit cheeseburger & the one from McDonald's! At least the fries were seasoned.

Marle T.

Yelp
Good place, nice vibes but omg I wish the staff would stop dragging the chairs across the ground. Pick them up, clean, that way people can enjoy their food without that god-awful concrete-on-steel sound.

L S.

Yelp
Had the double dragon burger and wasn't disappointed at all. In fact it was one of the nicest burgers I've had in a long time. However the one letdown for me was the lack of space for such a busy store. And I would have to say the wooden stools are really uncomfortable. But when it comes to food and hygiene I give them a good thumbs up.
