Over the past 12months burger joints have opened up in and around the city, with most succeeding in various ways. The heart of the success, is the burger, without a great burger there is little chance of success of a great burger joint.
8bit in Melbourne CBD is a burger restaurant that, you guessed it, serves a variety of burgers and sides, as well as a selection of "gourmet hot dogs". This week I visited twice. The first venture into this funky venue I ordered the FATAL FURY with Jalapeño & Cheddar Sausage, Cheese Sauce, Chilli Beef, Jalapeños, with a side of onion rings. On paper this hot dog ticked all my taste boxes, so I was really looking forward to munching down on my Fatal Fury. Unfortunately this dog was Fatal, but not in a good way. Firstly the Jalapeño & Cheddar Sausage, had no flavour and was actually unpleasant to eat. The chilli beef was bland with little heat. The best part was the bun, but unfortunately it's bum was soggy which made it really hard to eat. So with fatality of the dog I was praying that the onion rings would save the day. Not to be. The onions itself, nice, but too much batter and undercooked.
So as 8bit's core product is their burgers,I felt it only fair to go back for a second time and sample their burgers. This time I ordered the 8BIT WITH CHEESE. Beef, Tomato, Lettuce, Red Onion, Pickles, Mustard, Cheese, Ketchup, 8bit Sauce. With a side of chips. This was a step up from the hot dog. It was a good burger, but not great. I think it was the beef patty that let it down. They advertise it as being served medium, but mine was serve well done. In fact it was very well done and lacked flavour. The fries, disappointing. I got served the scraps, with only a few fries that had potato in them, the others just small chucks of over cooked chips.
In a time that the burger is the flavour of the month and a great deal of good burger joints out there, 8bit just need to work on their beef patty. The only redeemable part to 8bit is the price.
