My beautiful Bride and I were running errands and stopped in at the 99 Bar & Saloon. We were greeted right away. They were busy but still had seating available. It looked like a bartender and a waitress were working the front.
We were brought water and menus immediately. Our waitress answered the questions we had and took our order without hesitation.
I ordered a WeldWerks Hazy IPA, and my Bride ordered a vanilla milkshake made from simple ingredients, milk, eggs, and sugar. My sip was yummy, and she thoroughly enjoyed the rest.
As is our usual one plate, two forks routine, we split a double Breck Burger with fries. The patties are smashed, so the double gives you about a six-ounce burger. We ordered the bacon pepper jam on the side since we were not sure about it, and we added a bowl of white cheddar sauce.
When the burger came out, they had already split it and plated it separately for us. Nice surprise. It looked delicious, but before we took a bite, we noticed there was only one patty on the “double.” The cheddar sauce was great on the fries, and the jam was good too.
When we mentioned it to our waitress, she immediately apologized for the mix-up. She took both plates, fries, and sauce, back to the kitchen. She told us they would start over so all of the food would be fresh and hot. She said the cheddar would cook too much. She was not joking.
What a character move. The little bit of jam we had tasted was smoky, bacon-forward, almost like a BBQ note, but not really a sauce. It was delicious, so this time we had them put it right on the burger.
When it came back out, it was well worth the wait. Even smashed, the meat was juicy. The sauces together on the burger were divine. The fries dipped in the cheddar sauce were too. So good, I just had to order another IPA.
They absolutely owned a mistake and turned it into something better than okay, which honestly blew my mind. It was not even that big of a mistake.
We are already making plans to drive back into town.
