25 Places Commemorating Women Who Were Ahead of Their Time

"Women pilots had been barred from participating in the celebrated Cleveland Air Race, so in 1929 they decided to start their own. The Air Race Classic was instantly met with public criticism, with the women almost being forced to each fly with a man, but they refused to race under such conditions.  Despite the obstacles, 20 women pilots started the 2,700 mile race from Santa Monica, California, and, with Will Rogers serving as starter, raced to Cleveland, Ohio. The racers included Amelia Earhart and film pilot Ruth Elder as well as women who had been drawn to the rare opportunity in a heavily male world of aviation. Some pilots soon faced problems, including from suspected sabotage, and one pilot caught typhoid fever. Another had a fatal crash. Yet 14 finished, an impressive number for any long distance air race in the early days of flight. Following the race, the women reconvened in November of that year and decided to start the first women pilots organization. They sent letters to each of the 117 women pilots in the country and heard back from 99. Thus the Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots was formed.  Their headquarters is now in Oklahoma City near, coincidentally, the Will Rogers World Airport, and on their second floor is a museum dedicated to women pilots. There are displays on Harriet Quimby, the first woman to get a pilot’s license in the United States; Bessie Coleman, the first African American female pilot; Tiny Broadwick, the first woman to jump with a parachute from a hot air balloon; Bassica Raiche, who built her first biplane in her living room; early German aviatrix Melli Beese; and women in the space program like Sally Ride.  There are also numerous personal objects belonging to Amelia Earhart, who was the first president of the Ninety-Nines. These include her good luck scarf and elephant bracelet, which were left with her mother before her last flight, as well as her goggles and even a lock of her hair." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Good little museum to learn more about women in aviation. Felt a little dated on the presentation, but some of the displays upstairs were well done.

To know courage is to be brave. I cannot drive, cause I am too scared. To be in this museum , and feel the soaring courage of these legendary women, these amazons, these goddesses! They chose to fly, when women barely dreamed. I was thoroughly overwhelmed. Many perished trying, still others flew. They were subjugated, harassed, sabotaged, yet , they flew. Blessed are the brave.

Truly a gem of an aviation museum a short walk away from Tulsa International airport. Not very well known, but so very worth the visit. Small but interesting gift shop. The office personnel down stairs will open up the museum upstairs and it's a self guided tour through many well documented display case. Entire history of women's aviation is covered. A must visit stop for all history buffs and aviation enthusiast

Google
The Ninety Nines Museum of Women Pilots, is small museum but represents a collection that is both world class and worthy of far more attention. I was astounded to find it tucked on the edge of the Oklahoma Will Rogers airport. The club was the first women's flying club in the world. It represents so much for women overcoming bias and demonstrating that they are just as capable as men. Do yourself a favor and visit,. This place deserves far more attention than it gets.

An absolutely stunning collection! So much important history is contained inside these walls. I was amazed at the Jackie Cochran artifacts

Google
We loved it!! So wonderful to read about all the great piolet s and their accomplishments. If I could give 10 stars I would! I'm hoping next time the gift shop will be open.

Took my daughter here after a professor recommended that we go. It was a very educational experience for us and we enjoyed it! We never knew how much women contributed to the aviation industry.

This museum was unexpectedly educational. Lots of pictures, with interpretive signs. The space is small, but filled with history of women pilots. I learned so much about women in flight.

Yelp
Came on a Tuesday at two different times, but the museum wasn't open. Museum entrance is on the second floor, but the museum may not be in business any longer. Posted signs said that it was open today, but all doors were locked.

Yelp
This small museum is filled with interesting information. It is uneven in the quality of the artifacts and information provided, covering some areas very well, some not very well, and some simply disjointedly. It would benefit from a modernization since it is, technologically speaking, like a museum straight out of 1995.

Yelp
I went in downstairs, in an unfriendly voice I was told the museum was upstairs. I go upstairs and was waiting behind a person at the desk for quite sometime being ignored, so I left. No "I'll be with you in a moment" or anything. They didn't seem to want my business. It might be a nice museum, but my lack of reception was discouraging.

Yelp
Great exhibits on the WASP's, air races, astronauts, airline, & cargo pilots. Very well organized & acknowledges women who played a large role in the aviation industry. Also has a small gift shop offering t-shirts, books, & other aviation themed items.

Yelp
This gem of a museum should not be passed up. The museum of Women Pilots houses treasures of The Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots, a non-profit organization that was formed in 1929 by Amelia Earhart and 98 of the 117 certificated women pilots at that time. From the early days of aviation to modern days, see artifacts and information of pioneer women pilots like Harriet Quimby, Amelia Earhart, the Wasps, Thunderbird Nicole Malachowski, airshow performer Patty Wagstaff, and astronaut Eileen Collins. Fly a simulator, research women pilots, see the largest collection of women air racing memorabilia around. A must for anyone with an hour to spare while at Will Rogers Airport.
