The 15 Best Things to Do in Lisbon

"A bronze statue of Fernando Pessoa greets visitors at Café A Brasileira—the beloved poet frequented this joint to sip absinthe. One of Lisbon’s oldest (and perhaps most famous) cafés, this circa-1905 institution was, in its heyday, a grand place for writers and intellectuals to convene. Today it's a bit of a tourist trap, but don’t let that deter you. The Art Deco backdrop, complete with dark wood, splashes of brass, mirrors, and a black-and-white floor, is like a piece of Portugal’s heritage, reborn." - Alia Akkam, Chadner Navarro

"Old-School Elegance at A Brasileira Open since 1905, A Brasileira was once the choice of Fernando Pessoa, the great Portuguese poet. You can sit beside him just outside, next to his bronze statue. Back in the day, this place was a hangout for writers, artists, and journalists. The location, in Garret Street, is great—just a step from the popular meet-up spot Largo de Camões. You can get there by subway (Baixa/Chiado Station), tram (Nº28), or on foot (go down Misericórdia Street, up Alecrim Street, or up Garret Street)—or come from one of the many streets of Bairro Alto)."

It's historic, beautiful cafe in centre of Lisbon. Art deco in style, frequented by notable visitors in the past. However, nowadays more like typical tourist spot, lacking in authenticity. We tried their pastries and they were very average to say the least. Coffee was good and the service friendly. Prices standard. It's worth only visiting for ambient. Watching nice people around or sitting centrally located on a busy street. Also inside is very nice decor.

Google
Stepping back in time to 1901 this is the oldest coffee shop in Porto, amazing atmosphere, smooth cold coffee with perfect presentation. The espresso is ever so slightly bitter but nothing to complain about, definitely worth the visit. Wait staff have impeccable manners and are very friendly.

Google
my friend said “let’s get a beer here and pretend we’re tourists” 😂 this is a really historic place (you can tell by the building and the antique decor is also beautiful) but it’s in a super touristic spot in lisbon… so it’s a bit expensive and you’ll get a seat if you’re lucky. anyways, there’s usually a musician nearby making magic, so you might get a free show 🫶🏼

Google
Very beautiful and historic cafe in the centre of Lisbon. In a good weather you can enjoy outdoor seating, but inside is also very chic and beautiful. They offer wide variety of pastries and also good options of sandwiches and salads. I must say espresso and Pastel de Natas is a must try combination.

Google
Very good food. Good service, nothing wow but not bad. Price is a little on the more expensive side but still not an arm and a leg. Try it but not a place to go back to necessairly. All in all, good food, good service, 4/5. Price is the only "negative" thing.

Google
I had the best Pastel de nata here, creamy custard with the flakiest tart shell. There were a lot more layers of those beautiful pastries than in other places. Every bite was so satisfying. 🤤 Ambiance was impeccable, it was full of historic charm and elegance. Staff was friendly and polite. Happy customer! 😃

Google
A very touristic place in the very center of Lisboa. We had a breakfast there, this place has a proper package for it. It expensive, but you pay here not for food, but for history and legend,- if you are ready. Surprisingly sweet enough fruits, tasty coffee and you can find a place to sit in the morning. They say that it's overcrowded during the day later.

Google
A true Lisbon classic! Café A Brasileira, founded in 1905, is one of the city’s most historic cafés. Frequented by great figures of Portuguese culture, such as Fernando Pessoa (whose statue sits on the terrace), the place breathes literary and bohemian history. The setting is stunning — the interior architecture is elegant and well preserved, with details like mirrors, carved wood, and an old-world charm that transports you back in time. It’s the perfect spot for a break with a coffee and a pastel de nata in the heart of Chiado. A must-stop for anyone visiting Lisbon!

Yelp
My friends and I came here for lunch and were lucky to beat the rush. I've heard people come for the pastries and coffee, but we really loved the food. We shared the OCTOPUS, CODFISH, and the BEEF BURGER. ENJOY! PS: If it's hot outside, sit outside. It's warmer to be inside. :)
google avatar

Nina C.

Yelp
Came here mostly to take in the historic interior and have a quick snack after a long day of travel. The coffee was good but the breakfast sandwich was okay, mostly because it was somewhat cold. Not sure if that is how that dish is supposed to be served.

Yelp
I came here with my 3 cousins and we had a delightful brunch. I split the brunch tower with one of my cousins. It was filled with meats, cheeses, bread, and fresh fruit. It was a great brunch. We sat inside. The inside is quite cozy, with a dark and moody interior. The serving staff did a great job. We wish we could've sat out on the patio because it was a classic European vibe. All in all a great experience. There is also an amazing shoe store called Zilian Chiado down the street. Make sure to check out that place after brunch here!

Yelp
Always a busy place, sometimes you'll wait in line a few minutes but it's absolutely worth the wait. Celebrating 120 years next year it's one of the best coffee houses in the city. Neighbor to Livraria Bertrand (the oldest bookstore in the world), Brasileira do Chiado, as we natives call it, is a people-watching spot as writers, poets, politicians all stop by for a coffee and their delicious pastries. There's even a statue to Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa you can sit next to. Don't miss it.

Yelp
This place was on so many blogs and reviews but I do not think it was for the food. The atmosphere was nice and the selection was broad but the items we ordered were a disappointment. We ordered a selection of croissant items and I could not bring myself to take a picture. The stuffed croissant looked like it had been left out all day with the avocado already blackened on the edges. The ham and cheese croissants were literally smashed. We ordered a custard croissant and it also was dry and crumbly, not at all what we expected from a custard croissant. The stars are for the collard greens and potato soup of the day. I would not return.
google avatar

Lauren T.

Yelp
Came just for dessert and coffee. The caramelized pear was pretty good, and I really liked the crumble with it. The tiramisu didn't taste like tiramisu and seemed more liked biscuit with cream.
google avatar

Yelp
Just because it is close to the one of the oldest library in Portugal, we stop by for coffee as it was getting cold... The place was built 1905 as their table napkins marked it. Coffee was great but not the dessert choices.

Yelp
We stopped by here at the end of our trip in Lisbon . I heard it's famous all over Portugal . The decor is 1920's . Very quaint . They were very busy . Not a lot of sitting , but they do have outside. We next to another couple. We enjoyed our coffee and pastries . Service was good .
google avatar

G T.

Yelp
Great seating outside but the food was bla. Croissant was stale. Ham and cheese tasteless. Cesar salad good but dressing not like normal Cesar. A little sweet More like ranch. No anchovies.

Yelp
This is a great historical Cafe opened since 1888. There is a status of a famous author outside the restaurant. The ambience inside is very nice. We had the Portugese Tart (2.2 Euro) and Docaria Conventual (4.9 Euro). They were delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for a glass of wine, really nice place, lots of character! We didn't eat here but the desserts looked AMAZING!

Yelp
Love the aesthetic of A Brasileira. Food was decent but nothing remarkable. Service was a bit slow for being fully staffed on a weekday during opening.
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
Here is what I have learned: influencers jobs are to make mundane things look beautiful. You spend money there, with the expectation that you will get beautiful things too. Yet I have been sitting in a tourist trap sardined behind an American waiting 20 min for one pastel de nata. It has arrived, plate is stained with other people's fingerprints and what looks like grease and cinnamon from possibly another dish? Lesson for you tourists: don't believe tick tok, the only way to travel is by getting lost and experiencing things first hand, without influence. Just an average pastel de nata. Not worth the time and discomfort.

Yelp
good place to eat food , drink and enjoy music. stuffs are really helpful, server are really good especially ivan , thank you ivan . i always recommend this place , will come again if i come next time to lisbon

Yelp
Don't understand the low rating. Is it in a touristy area? Yes. Are there lines? Yes. But you can't deny the history of this place in Portuguese coffee culture. If history isn't enough to convince you - the food should speak for itself. I've been here for coffee, bfast and a small drink. This is more of a bfast spot than anything else - or a small bites and a drink. Where else can you grab a coffee at the same place as icons such as Fernando Pessoa and Amalia Rodrigues. The beef croquette is always a hit but honestly have never had anything I didn't like here. Definitely recommend this spot for anyone who is in Lisbon for the first time. Make sure to read the first page of the menu to understand the history (it will definitely increase your appreciation of this place).
google avatar

Leonardo D.

Yelp
The food was lovely. I ordered the pancakes, and they came fluffy with lots of fruit and chocolate sauce with granola. The orange juice was fresh as well. I would give this place 5 stars, but the ambiance is not there for me. It was unbearably hot, and if you're seated in a spot where the sun hits you, you're going to absolutely Fry out there as the umbrellas do little to help you. The service was nothing special, but we received our food in a timely manner and there were no issues with it.
google avatar

Eda U.

Yelp
Stars are for the ambiance only. Service was slow, waiters were tired? -it is 10am- or not in the mood for serving, coffee so so. Just you can check the place for ambiance and for drink and eat somewhere else.
google avatar

Stan H.

Yelp
Now that I am thinking about my experience here and why I ended up here, it was more like a tourist trap I'd say along with some of the other reviewers here. I felt like my tour guide was trying to sell me stuff from Lisboa as opposed to naturally give an actual tour. The coffee was good but I don't think there was anything special about it. It is just overpriced because they gave themselves a name and have a beautiful interior. We couldn't enjoy the coffee inside and I had to take out and keep moving.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious pastries and coffee!! The service was excellent. They seated my wife and I and 4 of our children in only 15 minutes on a busy Friday lunch hour.
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
We stopped in for a quick lunch after a morning of shopping. It was challenging to get a table for five. We were able to get a seat inside, and service was slow. I know we are American, however, it shouldn't take 15 minutes to get a beverage (still water) after ordering. The food came out quicker, and was good. The portions were the right size. Overall nice experience for a quick lunch. The pastries in the case looked great. Unfortunately, we didn't try any here.
google avatar

Jess C.

Yelp
Popular afternoon coffee place, always long line for dine in. Takeout is fast. The nata here is fine - not the best place - but they also have a variety of other Portuguese desserts. Worth stopping by overall.

Hootergirl M.

Yelp
We ate outside in September and it was great people watching. The food was decent but the highlight was the fresh caipirinha. Wow that became my new drink during the trip. Try it there. one place did make it with sour mix or something not fresh so not as good as here. service was good.
google avatar

Heather F.

Yelp
So we came here the first day. This is the restaurant by the man who brought coffee to Portugal from brazil. You can't miss it with the big green umbrellas and huge outdoor seating. It's worth it to come for a quick bite of a croissant and coffee to say you ate there. The coffee is good but the other items are pricey for what they are. I guess you are paying for the experience :-) Tip: They call coffee a bica here
google avatar

Catherine W.

Yelp
Feel like it's a tourist trap. Went there for coffee, pasteis de nata and a few pastries. Not impressed at all. It's a beautiful classic restaurant though for you to take a few pictures.
google avatar

Michelle A.

Yelp
My second time here since I live far away from Lisbon. The cafe still the same, their pastries and coffee still the same the last time I tasted it 3 years ago. Still delicious and fresh! This place was packed and needed to wait outside to be seated and that tells a lot and continued to impress me.
google avatar

F F.

Yelp
Service was garbage. Dude just stood there watching everybody while not doing his job. When I waved him into reality he's like oh sorry sooo early in the morning... it was 10:45 am lol. Food was sub par and coffee was weak. Not for me
google avatar

Jacques R.

Yelp
More fuzz than buzz! It is well located but they think they are the best in town and make you feel like it! Coffee was good ... service, well could be MUCH better. We are not doing them a favor walking in and drinking something. So for me ... been there done that! Better places put there.
google avatar

E W.

Yelp
The coffee is good but I agree with some of the comments that it's not that impressive, but their scrambled egg is something I've never had before, which is so fluffy while the egg yolk in it tastes like over easy. The menu breakfast combo also has more than just fruits and pudding, not like some comments suggested(COVID blunder?). It is pricier than other places in Lisboa but nothing as pricy as east Coast :) and dollar was more valuable than euro while we were here, so not much to complain. The plus for me is that I like Pessoa and this wa Shia favorite place. Fan bias
google avatar

Steve C.

Yelp
Way too expensive for a coffee here. The place is very nice looking but way way overpriced. $2.50 euro's for an espresso, not a double but a si gel, is outrageous.

Bob B.

Yelp
Food is good, service is bad. They did not put our order in and did not make us aware until an hour later. The reviews are correct about bad service. Maybe you will be the lucky 2 out 10 that get good service.

Monaco C.

Yelp
This place is a tourist trap. It has nice ambience with seating outside and gorgeous design in the inside. That's the only reason why I give it three stars instead of one. Breakfast is equivalent to a continental breakfast you get at holiday inn. Pastel is good, but not the best. So go there if you want nice ambience but don't care much about quality of your breakfast.
google avatar

Nathan G.

Yelp
I liked this cafe. It is very centrally located in a busy restaurant / shopping area of Lisbon, historic and atmospheric, and is in all of the guidebooks and is therefore touristy and somewhat more expensive than average. Service was friendly and prompt, and not killer expensive - we had two coffees (excellent as always in Portugal), two sparkling waters and two delicious glasses of Portuguese Moscatel for 18.60 Euros which seemed about right for being on the terrace, right in the middle of a lively scene with street musicians and all. If you want an inexpensive cafe with no tourists, stay away. However, we had fun and would recommend it to experience this lively part of Lisbon over coffee and drinks. Two things I experienced here and not elsewhere in Portugal: first, this was the only place I went to where the waiter brought the check unprompted. Probably this is because it is touristy, and we did not feel rushed in any way. Also he shouted for us (politely, "Sir, Sir!") as we left, I guess thinking we were leaving without paying. He then saw that we had left a 20 Euro note under a glass so it would not blow away, and was apologetic. Moral of the story - pay the waiter directly in Portugal even if he leaves the check at the table, as this is apparently the custom.
google avatar

Malcolm L.

Yelp
I don't understand the 3-star rating. Excellent scrambled eggs and bacon with a delightful black current pavlova on the side. Lovely interior and nice terrace. Great service. Yes, a tad more expensive than some cafes, but worth the modest premium imo and still a great deal for those used to US prices.

R L.

Yelp
Complete ripoff. I was expecting this place to be a tourist trap but I thought I'd give it a try given the history of this establishment. First off, any price is double of any other restaurants in Lisbon. I ordered the "menu especial", which included the bacalhau as entree and a rice pudding as dessert. Yeah it was definitely "especial": - the fish was raw in the center. Waiter couldn't care less. - waited 45min for dessert, had to ask for it - when it finally came out, no rice pudding, it was just a few slices of fruits - $25, boom! Add a salad and 2 drinks: $65. A properly cooked bacalhau is about $12 to $14 in other restaurants. This place tags it at $24 a la carte and it's probably not safe to eat. Cooks may make mistakes but the miserable service following this was the straw. What a shame.
google avatar

Esther L.

Yelp
I had an amazing pastry here and loved it so much that I came back for it the next day. Everything else was okay but the pastry was awesome.
google avatar

Angela A.

Yelp
Espresso 5 stars, service 1 star. It's clearly a fancy, touristy cafe so it's not the friendly, casual town square experience we've grown to know and love. The staff was pretty nonchalant and, while the decor is notable, there isn't a ton of atmosphere or people watching to do. The espresso was more expensive that elsewhere and more expensive than the menu online indicates (2.5 euro instead of 1) however it was fantastic, if you're into it being very strong. We didn't try any pastries. Free wifi.
google avatar

Dorothy Y.

Yelp
A beautiful 100 year old coffee shop/restaurant. Service was friendly, lots of wine selection and finger food. Servers were friendly and food was brought out quite quickly and fresh. We enjoyed
google avatar

Ameya B.

Yelp
This is a true tourist trap. Me and my colleagues were in Lisbon and landed in this place while searching for some local flavors. One look at the menu, and you'd realize that this place is just unreasonably expensive. We ended up just having a few beers and we charged €3 for a small 200 ml can. That's a bit much given many restaurants in the locality serve pints in the range of €4 - €5. Service is OK. If you happen to seat outside, good luck getting the servers to attend you. Inside seating probably gets better service. The only reason why they are still in business is, they are always open. On Sunday, during noon time, most restaurants in the area were closed for business (Shocking!). 2 stars just for the fact that they were at least open!

Kiia L.

Yelp
This place is fine, very pricey compared to other cafes nearby. You have to flag down the waiters every time you want something. I ordered fries which never came. The coffee was good and so was the fruit smoothie.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
Take pictures (this place is beautiful) and then do yourself a favor and save your time and money for a more worthwhile spot. We stopped by the outside seating area for some evening drinks and people watching. After 10-minutes, our server asked if we'd like a menu...then we never saw her again. Our entire section went without service for another 30-minutes. My husband tried to order inside, only to be told we had to place our order with our outside server. When he explained that we had no server, the bartender shrugged her shoulders and walked away. We, along with several other tables, ended up leaving. Fortunately, there are many other places nearby with far better service that were willing to take our money without wasting our time.
google avatar

Taylor H.

Yelp
This place is great! My group was staying around the corner at the Lisbon Poets Hostel. We had easily slept through our included breakfast and were getting towards that "hangry" stage. A Brasileira was literally around the corner, behind where the Baixa/Chaido station staircase leads, and has a huge patio with outdoor seating. There was nowhere to sit outside, as the weather was gorgeous and it was around 1pm at this point. However, there was seating downstairs, so we made our way to the basement. This actually worked out beautifully as everything was actually marked up on the menu a Euro or two for the patio seating; so we basically ate at a discount! We ordered a bottle of wine and a bread basket with spreads. Bread isn't free, but we knew this when we ordered so it didn't come as a surprise. Since we had a bread basket, I ordered a side salad, my husband got an omlette, and my sister a plate of pork and vegetables. The food was unbelievable! Everything was so flavorful and while the portions were large, me just getting a side salad was a good move and I split my sister's meal. At the end, we were pretty full, but a case of deserts kept catching my eye. We ordered a single glass full of custard topped with cinnamon. Holy moly, that was ridiculously good! Loved, loved, loved this place. I really enjoyed it, and you can't be the location.
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
Worth a stop given the history of the cafe, the beautiful space, and quality coffee (order a "bica," which is what they call espresso in Lisbon). Be forewarned, however, that the service leaves something to be desired. If you're not staying nearby, just hop on the metro, get off at the Baixa/Chiado stop, take the escalators up to Chiado, and you'll run right into A Brasileira at the top of the stairs.
google avatar

Angel W.

Yelp
We went here twice as it was just outside of our hotel. Both times were for late night drinks and our first experience was great. The second time, the server was incredibly rude, saying they didn't serve wine by the glass or small bottles, which we knew to be untrue. The location is great though and at night there are usually buskers there performing, which is quite nice.
google avatar

phil b.

Yelp
I've never penned a review with ZERO stars but theres a first time for everything. ZERO stars cuz we left before we could be served or greeted as guests. Here's why. Stopped in last evening. There was one table free outside but it needed to be cleared and cleaned. I asked the waiter if we could sit and he obliged. After about 15 minutes he came back and cleared the glasses but left the table filthy. Never greeted us or smiled or even brought a menu, as he did for another group that came after us. He was rude and unfriendly. In fact, for some reason he didn't want to serve us so we left. Worst experience of our 3 week trip in Spain and Portugal.
google avatar

Jing X.

Yelp
Basically is not amazing as expected. The coffee is common and pasties also have other alternatives around there.
google avatar

Tiffany B.

Yelp
We were told by our Tuk-tuk tour guide that this place won the prize this year for best pastel de nata, and we can see why! This storefront is also just beautiful inside and out, and is constantly packed with people. Everyone needs a sugar high. And this is a great place to get one. Hard to believe there are so many purveyors of this one particular dessert--they truly are everywhere. Also hard to believe their populace isn't as large as the American contingent, knowing this is the national snack of choice and appears on most breakfast bars and menus. The place is crowded, so you can just sidle up to the bar and knock one of these back on foot. Be sure to ask for the canela (cinnamon). The one weird thing, not unique to this spot, is that they don't want you to pay straight away/ up front. Which can become a bit of a pain in the behind if you just want to eat and jet. But when in Rome. Or Lisbon, as the case may be.
google avatar

Eunice C.

Yelp
Left the table after waiting for a server for more than 15 minutes. It doesn't matter how good a coffee place is if there is no one to take your order.
google avatar

Jewel Y.

Yelp
Great location and great old world atmosphere, but that's it. I came here to check out this historic cafe which was a favored haunt of intellectuals such as Pessoa. There is a bronze statue of Pessoa sitting outside the cafe and just like every other tourist, yes I did take a picture with it as well. This cafe benefits a lot from its historical charm but the service and the quality of the coffee and dessert did not live up to the beautiful setting. The coffee was disappointing and the queijada was just dense and bland. It's an ok place for a coffee break given its location and history but don't expect outstanding quality coffee.
google avatar

Qype User (Lisbon…)

Yelp
The place is great, you breathe history! Unfortunately it is pricey, staff is not nice at all and you have to wait a loooooooooong time, even if it is only for a cafe! Take a picture with the statue of Fernando Pessoa and go spent your precious time somwhere else!
