A Capella Books has been a staple of downtown mom-n-pop book shopping for as long as I can remember. They carry both new and used titles intermingled on the same shelves so that you only have to look in one place for what you want. The books are well-divided into major categories, as well as more minor, specialized genres (ie: Beat Generation, Atlanta flavor, and sections for cult authors ie: Dave Eggers, Hunter Thompson).
As a reader with pretty picky tastes, I've always been happily surprised at what turns up on the A Capella shelves. I've found out of print and autographed books for completely reasonable (and sometimes cheaper than reasonable) prices. Though the selection somewhat depends on what they order used, they have a much more tasteful array than most other stores that carry a lot of used product. There's a good mix of titles for the literary, the mainstream, and the research-oriented.
My one quibble with the store might be their lack of periodicals. I'd expect a store of this nature to carry a decent slew of literary magazines and journals, but they don't really even have any other than McSweeney's, which is a disappointment. Still, their selection of other books beats most other new and used stores if you're looking for things besides the bestseller lists.
They also have a small side room where live readings and musical performances sometimes go on. The range of authors and musicians they bring in vary from literary to local. The only one I've ever been to was a small and very peculiar reading by musician Ian Svenonious (from Nation of Ulysses, the Make*Up and several others), which was interesting to get to see.
A good store in a city that seems unfairly devoid of literary flavor.
