Yelp
4.5 stars-Wonderfully friendly down home style bakery and lunch stop. Learned of Slice of Pie before going on this trip to the area and they reviewers were spot on. Pretty little college town halfway between St Louis and Springfield. First thing you see when walking in is a six or eight foot case practically filled to the edges with pies of many types and two different sizes. The young lady at the counter could not have been friendlier or more helpful. More on that later. Specials now are fresh Strawberry and Millionaire pie-a cream, fruit, and nuts concoction. These pies are gorgeous and it will most likely make it a difficult decision what to choose-both for right away and to take home:). American & Dutch Apple, Country Custard, Blackberry Cream, Peach, Peanut Butter Lust, etc. Cream Pies such as Chocolate Silk, Lemon, Coconut, etc. Quiche, Cakes, two different types of Pot Pies, Brownies. Menu is so appealing.
We chose to go ahead and have lunch here also. I chose the Chicken Mushroom Pot Pie but unlike the photo I saw online this was a quarter slice of a full 10" pie! Much larger I think then the six-inch mini pie in the picture. Heated to a piping hot and served covering the plate. The filling was spectacular. Meaty, herby, mushrooms, corn, green beans, etc. Absolutely delicious. Loved it. The unfortunate part was that due to either how it was stored or heated, the top crust was not crisp and the edge crust was too dry for my taste. But as a whole it was still a delight. Served with a large, soft, fresh, made roll. Sooo goood. DW chose a chicken salad sandwich-the only one on the menu. Mayoee(?) chicken mix with purple grapes, mandarin oranges, almonds, etc. Served on a croissant looking roll that was quite sweet, surprisingly. The roll was dry. The salad not real flavorful. Served with chips. Could have been better.
After much questioning and debate we chose to take the young staff members recommendation and pick the one she said was fresh today-Blackberry Crumble (over the Chocolate Cream and French Silk) Served with real fresh whipped cream. They offer not only two sizes of whole pies but also two sizes of slices, whole and half. The whole is a quarter pie, similar to my pot pie and the half is an eighth of a pie. We went half slice and it was plenty big enough for two-or a hearty eater. The mound of whipped cream on top was a sight to behold. Interestingly, they sprinkle more of the crumb topping over the cream. Detracted a bit imo. The pie was served slightly warm. The crust here was outstanding. Buttery and baked perfectly. The filling was generous and with a nice blackberry flavor. Not really strong, but nice. We also chose to take an eight-inch toll house pie with us for future enjoyment on our road trip. This was a good meal in a quality establishment. Wish I lived closer to try more often. But my mid-section says good that I don't Tip-on Tuesday they do half slice half price deal.
