If you read my previous 5 star reviews below, you can tell that I really liked this restaurant.
We started dining here more than a decade ago. When Jeff was chef/owner there was a je ne sais quoi, some kind of unnamable quality that made A Table Apart extraordinary. Certainly it was due to Jeff's unique menu and culinary skills. But, in addition, the servers (like Joshua) were there for years and seemed as invested in the success of this eatery as the couple who owned it.
Jared learned from Jeff and took over a couple of years ago. He presents Jeff's creations, generally pretty well. However, the limited menu never changes. In fact, it has become uninteresting, even boring. Jared seems to be just coasting along on Jeff's reputation.
A Table Apart attracts the millionaire Cafe Society crowd. Ordinary people like us, who drive a Honda from Naples Park, look for dining deals. The free Spotlight magazine always has a coupon for a discount at A Table Apart. A few years ago, one could get a free bottle of house wine (using coupon) when ordering two entrees from the Prix Fixe menu (available 5 to 6 pm); now, one can get 50% off a bottle of wine.
We made a reservation and were first patrons to arrive about 505 pm last evening. Our supercilious waitress seemed unhappy to be waiting on tables.
I chose a $36 bottle of Pinot Gris to cost $18 with coupon.
We ordered the Eggplant Caponata to share and each had a pear salad. These were OK, but not extraordinary.
Now, none of the three choices on the Prix Fixe menu at $39. appealed to us. Thus, we chose entrees with additional "UP" charges. These dinners were OK, but way overpriced.
We had Scallops @ $39 +3 = $42. And Prawn Curry @ $39 + 4 = $43. When my dinner arrived with 3 prawn, I pointed out to the waitress that I have previously had this dish and been served 4 prawn. I offered to show her the photo from my older review - see below, but she was uninterested and argued that the dish comes with 3 prawn (she admitted that she has been working here about a month). A comparable meal at a great Indian restaurant like Spice Club would cost about $22. (half this price).
The final coup de grace was when the bill came (see photo). This is supposed to be fine dining, not fast food. But we were bum rushed in less than one hour (gotta clean this table quick for new customers). Moreover, the waitress had not deducted the 50% from the bottle of wine, although I discussed the offer and gave her the coupon when ordering the wine. So, I paid $135. cash and told her that $18. of her tip can come when she corrects the wine price.
I have A Table Apart dining card, for discounts after several meals, but I did not even bother to present this card. Because we are finished with this restaurant.
We ate last week at Wyld's Cafe, which is literally about 100 feet away from A Table Apart. I heartily recommend that restaurant: better food, better ambiance, better service (and with an early dining coupon costing about $35. less).
