On the Grid : A Vida Portuguesa

"The neighborhood's crown jewel. After setting a few stores in Lisbon and Porto, A Vida Portuguesa arrived at Intendente with its “flagship” store as one of the first inhabitants of the reconversion. It's hard to define the place in words, since it features a world of vintage Portuguese visual history, so you can and should expect to lose inside its many rooms, but expect to see thousands of portuguese designed products from the early 20th century, reflecting older times when the country was proudly — and foolishly —isolated but also cherished and built brands confidently and with a passion. The graphic languages found here are a designer's fantasy and some of the most exquisite you'll find in Europe." - Nelson Vassalo

Beautiful home goods, food, textiles, and gifts shop. Paper products and soaps/ ceramics are mostly on the top floor and furnishing, food items, textiles and everything else are in the basement. They carry some of the best local artisan wool and cotton products at incredible prices. I wish we could’ve gotten everything! Rugs, bathmats, bedspreads, blankets, tablecloths, placemats etc. Wonderful food selection too, managed to snag a bottle of limited edition Portuguese Olive oil together with many tins of seafood, specialty salt and other jams/ spreads/ sauces.

This was a lovely Portuguese shop with a fantastic selection of gifts, including food items, kitchen supplies, rugs, posters, books, stationery, and more. Unlike some other stores we visited, it didn’t feel overly touristy, which made for a more authentic shopping experience. We found several great items to bring home as a reminder of our trip to Portugal and couldn’t be happier with our purchases. If you’re looking for quality souvenirs or unique gifts, this is definitely a spot worth visiting!

A wonderful shop that you must stop in if you are looking something unique to bring home as gifts or for yourself. There is something for everyone here! Make sure to go downstairs, there is so much waiting there to see.

A chic and stylish shop selling beautiful gifts and souvenirs. We bought a collection of ceramic swallows - they survived the journey home - and will be a great keepsake of our trip to Lisbon.

A Homage to Heritage – The Enchantment of A Vida Portuguesa, R. Anchieta A visit to A Vida Portuguesa at R. Anchieta is a sojourn into the heart of Portugal’s artisanal soul. On this occasion, I was enchanted by their selection of traditional Portuguese soaps, each bar a fragrant testament to the country’s natural bounty and the age-old art of soap-making. The soaps, with their rich lather and delicate scents, are not merely cleansing agents; they are an everyday luxury, a way to bring a touch of Portugal into the sanctity of one’s home. Moreover, the store presented a meticulously curated selection of canned seafood, a staple in Portuguese cuisine known for its superior quality and sustainability. My choice of these canned delicacies was driven by both taste and the allure of their vintage-inspired packaging—each tin a piece of art, preserving the ocean’s bounty. The beautiful blanket I purchased, with its exquisite weave and comforting warmth, along with the soaps and canned seafood, encapsulates A Vida Portuguesa’s commitment to celebrating and preserving the Portuguese way of life. These items are more than mere goods; they are stories of a culture rich in history, flavors, and craftsmanship, waiting to be unfurled and appreciated in homes far and wide.

Yelp
When I visited this location seemed to have already been permanently closed. This page should be updated. Their flagship location near the famous Cervejaria Ramiro is still open and a beautiful store to visit.

Yelp
Wonderful store to get artisan items made in Portugal. Soaps, perfumes a variety of items that are great gifts for family or for yourself!

Yelp
This is a great souvenir shop in the city center, although there are several locations in Lisboa. They have predictable souvenirs like canned sardines and port, to clothing, jewelry, stationery, candles, perfumes, and even children's books. I liked browsing in the store, and there is no pressure to buy anything. Everything is unique and locally made, and most importantly, non-tacky.

Yelp
I LOVE this store and there are multiple locations with slightly similar and some different items. The people are really helpful and nice. The store is clean and well organized and smells soooo good. It's a home goods store and there are souvenirs but really nice ones - of all different price ranges. I bought tiles here and they are so cute. The lady that works there even opened up the drawers so I could see all the patterns before I decided.

Yelp
If you're looking for some gifts for folks back home and can't buy another keychain or fridge magnet, then this is the place to visit. It has better quality products such as high-end soups and toiletries. Some soap bars are 8 euros for a tiny one and 15 Euros for the full-sized bars. We bought 5 bars for family and some stationary products. They also have sardine cans and other food products for gifts. Books are also offered. All products are displayed beautifully and artfully. Give this place a visit if you are fresh out of options for gifts or for something to buy to remember Lisbon for yourself.

Yelp
This is a beautifully curated shop in Lisbon. It is perfect for exploring all the different products made in Portugal. Instead of buying souvenirs at the other shops, I came here to take gifts home. I felt good knowing everything was made locally. I even bought a few items for myself. There are other locations throughout the city. Definitely worth a stop while you're out sightseeing.

Yelp
I LOVE this store! I visited solo for the first time in 2019 and bought a rug and some cute souvenirs. I loved it so much that I returned in June 2023 with my husband and he enjoyed it too. Great place to grab quaint gifts and souvenirs while in Lisbon!

Yelp
This store was a great find during my travel through Portugal. Was able to find some unique great items which were made right in Portugal. I would recommend to anyone

Yelp
This tiny shop is not your typical souvenir pot, for it offers an eclectic collection of treasures that you might not find in other shops. They an array of scented soaps for both men and women, some very cool ceramics, and stacks of blankets that will remind you of your trip to Portygal. The whole place has an antique feel to it , almost as if you were stepping back in time. The only issue I had with this one was that some of the prices did see a bit high.

Laura B.

Yelp
Wander into this shop and feel you can trust each item here. Wide, lovingly and carefully curated selection of gifts to make your loved ones swoon (and get something for yourself while you're at it). Everything is made in Portugal so you're supporting local artisans, not just churning junk. The sales people and owner were attentive, each adding to our experience. A salesperson pointed out a way I could improve a selection of cork place mats (5 euros each) the owner gift bagged a pair of earrings even after they were beautifully board. It's clear there's more than a profit motive here. A gem and a rare find--we got everything from little bottles of booze to coasters to handmade jewelry.

Yelp
Is it pricey? Yes it is. Will you want to give them all your money? Quite possibly. A Vida Portuguesa is not your average gift store. They have collected speciality gift items and souvenirs from all over in their beautiful shop. It's filled with beautiful treasures. I spent at least a couple of hours browsing through their amazing collection of soaps, rugs, throws, porcelain, postcards, oils and chocolates. If you want to take something special back from Portugal this is the place. I had read a lot about Claus Porto soaps, and they 'apparently' are Oprah Winfrey's favorite thing from Portugal. Well I had to see/smell them for myself. You see these beautifully packaged soaps as soon as you enter the store. They smell and look amazing, I just knew I was going to end up spending a lot of my money here (glad to have come here on the last day) But I'm so glad that I did. A trip to this beautiful store makes your trip complete they have so many amazing things. It's definitely a must see and I'm definitely coming back with an empty suitcase and a loaded wallet :)

Yelp
My favorite store in Portugal. I could have spent hours there. I left with a beautiful Papelarias Emilio Braga journal-sketch book and a swallow silver pendant necklace, along with gifts. I love this store

Yelp
I was just walking around the neighborhood on Sunday night, and as it's one of the few places that still had light on, I was drawn to it like a moth. Walking in, it felt like a small store, but as I walked through to another room, and another, I realized that this place is bigger than expected. Eclectic is most certainly the word to describe its collection. There are scarves, toys, trinkets, soaps, jewelry, bags, candies, cans of sardines, stationery... No reason and rhyme at all. Some of the items seem geared for tourists, and some seem to be for nostalgic locals, as the package of some candies and stuff look like what you may remember from childhood. Anyway, I had fun browsing the store, and was able to do some last minute souvenir shopping for something a little unusual.

Yelp
Yay! This is a cute little shop selling homeware and souvenirs. I especially love the fact that they have some of the discontinued Claus Porto soaps; the melon one smells amazing.

Yelp
Wife loved it. People were queued up to get inside before it opened.

Yelp
(12/18/2016) A gorgeous store with beautiful and special Portuguese items. They're really selling you on the atmosphere, and we were buying it. Place was packed, looked like locals and tourists alike. Prices were high, as you would expect for such real estate. We bought some fancy locally made soaps. A lovely place to peruse, almost in a museum-like atmosphere. If you like pretty packaging, this place is for you.

Yelp
Fun little shop of Portuguese goods. A WALL of soaps, half a wall of sardines, and tons of kitchen stuff--I got some fun hand made trivets. We also got a cool puzzle of a historic map of Lisbon for my father in law. Lots of little notebooks, and some basic touristy type stuff, but nicer/ not made in China. Staff was friendly and helpful. And very nice that they offered to give me extra bags with their pretty labels on them for the gifts, and allowing me to package the items later so they don't get all smashed up and wrinkled before giving the items away. Nice touch. They have more than one of these shops--we passed another one somewhere in our walk that had more of the ceramic stuff, it looked like. Happy with what I found here.

Yelp
It is a pretty cool shop in Lisbon. You can get a big range of local products, like sardines, olive oil, ports, liqueurs, soaps, and much more. They also have a lot of nice hand crafted articles, like famous Portuguese swallows, drawings, painting reproductions, etc. The shop is located in a beautiful old venue. Why did I only gave it 3.5 - 4 stars? The prices are quite steep and I loved just browsing around and looking for some inspiration and ideas, however I didn't buy there anything. If you are looking for a nice gift for someone this might be a good place to start.

Yelp
A Vida Portuguesa, I'm diggin you. my husband and I just happened to find this little goody on the way to eat at Kaffehaus next door and were pleasantly surprised. the store is known as a "stationary" store, although it seemed as though they only had a few postcards + notebooks. the rest of the store was filled with soaps, tiles (of course), blankets, fun wooden items like a honey dipper and tapas platter. the very friendly cashier told me that their factory store is located nearby (Largo do Intendente, 23), so maybe they have more of the stationary? regardless, I was into the eclectic offerings. we both bought notebooks/journals that were handmade in Lisbon.. great souvenirs, for sure. you should come..

Yelp
Believe the reviews. If you prefer to live your adventures as a traveler (not a tourist) -- this place is for you. Seeking out some special keepsakes from beautiful Lisbon, my mom and I trekked over to A Vida Portugesa based on the recommendations of locals (and yelpers, of course). We arrived to the shop (tucked into a small side street) and it was floor to ceiling of beautiful art, decor, ceramics, books, goodies, etc. I was especially fond of the prints with swallows (special to Portugal) and some of the very nice ceramics and small Portugese toys, handcrafted. We also got a beautiful chocolate bar to enjoy with a coffee later, while strolling back to our hotel! Whether you want something authentic for yourself or need a gift for someone back home, this should definitely be your stop. Leave all the trinkety crap for the "tourists" and start experiencing like a traveler -- A Vida Portugesa!

Yelp
I don't really get what A Vida Portuguesa sells; it's a strange mix of food, bath stuff and paper supplies, but that last part of course makes my heart beat faster. They sell great postcards and I have to admit: for every single product, the packaging is awesome.

Yelp
Although when you enter you think this is a typical touristy place, it is not! This is almost like travelling in time (specially for the older generation). You can find almost anything here that is genuinely Portuguese, from bars of soap to hair products, swallows to saint shrines. Everything has that kitsch feeling but at the same time collector look. It is pretty nice, if you are in Lisboa do not miss it. Bring something home, a piece of Portuguese history, it is product design at its most. Even if you don't want to buy anything at all, go in the shop and entertain yourself with some of the stuff they sell, I know I do! They have proper sweets, canned tuna and Licor Beirão! You can even buy gift boxes to take home for a multitude of stuff! Go there for a walk, the store is inside of an old building that still retains its former look, just like an old wine cellar. The only bad thing I have to say about the store is that it is a bit expensive, I understand that with the fact that it is the only one out there that does this kind of stuff! Very good indeed!

Yelp
This is the place to do all of your souvenir shopping in Lisbon for absolutely everyone on your list: your two-year old nephew, your fashionista friend, your foodie pal, your impossible-to-shop-for brother, and your grandmother who has everything. It's an upscale, well-curated collection of the very best that Portugal has to offer - from beauty products to shoes, sardines to wool blankets. One of the locals we befriended told us that A Vida Portuguesa is beloved around town because they resuscitated several companies that were about to shutter when their old-school products had fallen out of favor, replaced by shinier, less expensive alternatives. A Vida Portuguesa brought them back, including some fabulous skin creams and shaving supplies that they just don't make like they used to. I cannot sing A Vida Portuguesa's praises enough...definitely check them out when you're in Lisbon.

Yelp
This store takes you back in time, at least as far as Portuguese items are concerned. Here, you can find Gorilla Bubble gum, Couto toothpaste and AC Brito Colognes to name just a few. While these brands may not have a lot of significance for non-Portuguese the common trait is that they are all but extinct and can only be found here. It's a neat retro store and definitely worth the visit.

Yelp
THIS LOCATION IS NOT CLOSED!! I JUST VISITED IN LATE JULY 2016. Whoa, this place is dreamy. Talk about one-stop souvenir shopping. We bought delicious tinned fish (so many to choose from, in packaging gorgeous enough for gifts), gorgeous soaps, jewelry, embroidered napkins, toys, ceramics, and chocolate. And they also had liquor, books, art, kitchenware, and more. Everything is positively gorgeous, all made in Portugal, and I would say not at all expensive for the handmade goods you're getting. In fact, I totally disagree with the reviews that call it expensive. (We got so many little gifts for people for 5-10 Euros, and I bought a gorgeous necklace for 25...) And the folks working there were so sweet and helpful. Our whole family, kids included, had fun shopping here. Don't miss this place. (And in particular, if you want gifts, go here and you won't have to spend one second shopping anywhere else!!)

Yelp
Pre-globalization store, better than a cheap museum.

Yelp
Nice, vintage inspired goods, ample choice of canned sardines (local specialty), books, toys, clothes, azulejo tiles. Some sweets, kitchen utensils, soaps, excellent items to bring back home.

Yelp
Smallish store but got some great goodies for my trip back home. They have an amazing Rosemary honey, olive oils, port wine, chocolate gifts, ceramics, soaps, etc. If you are looking for classy gifts versus the tacky souvenirs, this is the place to come to. The personnel working there are helpful and pleasant as well.
