How a Lunar New Year Trip to Richmond, British Columbia, Taught Me How to Embrace Being Asian American

"A private tour led by Robert Sung that the author took to 'understand the context of the community'; the guided experience 'enlightened me to the Canadian take on Asian immigrants and culture' and helped knit together the meaning of the neighborhood's landmarks and food stops." - Rachel Chang Rachel Chang Rachel Chang is a travel and pop culture journalist who contributes to Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, and more. My husband and I booked this tour as we love food and culture. We were so lucky to get Bob as our tour guide. We had a day that allowed us to slow down, take in the sights, culture, lessons, traditions and food of Vancouver's Chinatown. We loved our day and getting to know Bob. Be ready to have full tummies, happy hearts and some lovely memories.

Google
Hands down, this is the best value for your food tour money in Vancouver. What's not clear from their website (as of June 2025) is that you get three yummy tastings along the way, and a full delicious dim sum meal at the end. The guides have chef/restaurant experience so the samples and meal are of high quality. Also included are entrances to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, and two other sites, plus a lesson in Chinese tea. We learned a lot about Chinese culture and history. Plan for a long (4+ hours) event with lots of information provided, along with personal stories. And plan to be very full at the end!

Visitors in our own city. Bob brought Chinatown to life in a way regular trips never did before. He is a great storyteller and has curated a great combination of history, culture, and food. Highly recommend it to discover or rediscover an experience rich area of Vancouver

We have done quite a few food tours and this one is the absolute best! Bob was a fantastic tour guide who treated us like old friends and challenged us to have a conversation instead of listening to a walking lecture. He is a wealth of historical and food knowledge, presenting information in a way that is easy to understand and appreciate. We sampled a variety of Chinese foods. Most we've never had before and loved everything. The dim sum lunch was also an impressive spread and delicious. We really enjoyed the sampling of gardens and cultural centers that really put the history of Chinatown into perspective. This is a must do in Vancouver!

Google
Bob is the best. We’ve done maybe 15 tours in various towns - both food tours and cultural tours. Bob is the best tour guide we’ve had. He’s a bright guy, a proud Chinese Canadian, and is very passionate about sharing his heritage. It’s a food tour, but he introduces a TON of fascinating cultural info into the mix. Super interesting. And the food is great, and, plenty of it. Don’t miss this!

Google
This is more than a simple food tour, the cultural aspects of Chinatown explained by Bob made for an incredible tour. The food was also incredible.

Google
Wonderful tour! Bob did a fantastic job in explaining the history and meanings of Chinese culture in Vancouver. The food samples that we had were wonderful. Highly recommend for people who are interested in the history of Chinese immigrants in Vancouver.

Google
This was a superb, varied and tasty tour through Chinatown. Bob Sung lead us through Chinese-Canadian history in expert fashion, with visits to museums and storytelling. He is an excellent teacher, and we learned many new aspects of Chinese culture. Food was delicious, sampling barbecue, custard tarts, apple filled buns, and dim sum. Finished at a tea shop for savory aged white tea! We can’t recommend this tour enough.

Yelp
I have mixed feelings regarding this tour. I learned a lot about the contributions, discrimination & the hardships the Chinese went through as Canada was building their country. I found Thomas a very knowledge, patient, & informative about both the culture, traditions & food. I found Bob (the tour company owner) over baring & rude to us at times.

Yelp
We highly recommend this educational Chinese culture and food experience with Bob. He does an excellent job of trying to have everyone in the group interact. By the Dim Sum lunch, we were all chatting about our travel experiences. He goes into Chinese culture and history, and explains the history of the Chinese in Vancouver. We had Chinese BBQ, apple pastries, saw a professional tea maker, and had an all-you can-eat Dim Sum lunch that was excellent. Book with Bob, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Bob, our tour guide was very informative and personable. At the beginning he mentioned that he wants to tour to resonate with everyone so don't be shy and ask questions or add comments. Our group was from all parts of the US including the tour guide... he was from Hawaii so we got along great from the get go! Lol We was lucky to have such an amazing group of awesome people! We talked story with each other and found out a little about their life in their part of where they call home. Anyway, back to the tour.. lol His knowledge about the history of downtown Vancouver was very informative and easy to understand. He includes everyone in his discussions and asks question on how certain things relate to you. I think that really helped to bring the group together! The group dim sum lunch was awesome and good time to find out more about the others. My only complaint is that we visited three tea shops and one member really wasn't into tea. I love tea but I think maybe if we had another different stop it would have been better. Whether you like tea or not, I recommend this tour because of his knowledge of the history of Chinatown! And of course for the good food you get along the way!! ;)

Yelp
Bob provided a very informative and entertaining experience for our conference delegates that joined the tour. There were 24 if us and we ended the tour with lots to think and talk about with very full stomachs! Well done Bob and team! Thank you!

Yelp
This was a fun and relaxing tour. Our guide was so kind and thoughtful. He did a great job of explaining so much about Chinese culture, history, and architecture without boring us one bit. Loved this tour so much. Some highlights were the storytelling centre, the brand new cultural museum, the tea shop, and of course the gorgeous gardens.

Yelp
We did a private tour with Bob, and it exceeded our expectations! Learning about the culture made the food even better. I highly recommend this tour. Thank you, Bob!

Yelp
Wonderful tour & delicious food!! Loved seeing the Chinese gardens & guide got a perfect family photo of our family of 4. Really appreciated the history & visiting the museum & herb spot. To help future guests plan, note that you won't be eating right away -,my teenage son wished he had breakfast, but was totally stuffed by the end.

Yelp
Bob was an amazing tour guide. He was so accommodating with our small child & was nice enough to book us last minute. A Wok Around Chinatown tour touched on many aspects of the Chinese culture including history of how the Chinese arrived in Vancouver. Bob is Chinese and well known in the community. Because he spoke the language & was able to communicate with many of the vendors it made the tour feel very authentic. Come hungry because you will eat a ton! The markets are so neat to see & the herbal shops were my personal favorite. We loved his tour so much that we also took the Granville Market tour and we were not disappointed.

Michael P.

Yelp
Bob was an excellent tour guide. He shared his personal experience of growing up in Vancouver's China Town, and enlightened his guests with his Chinese family traditions. His thorough and clear instruction of Chinese culture, history, food, and writing was very enriching and fascinating. The highlight, of course, was the Chinese food. The final meal was one of the best Chinese meals we have had. The opportunity of meeting travelers from all over the world was a lot of fun as well. I strongly recommend this tour to anyone who appreciates Chinese food and heritage.

Yelp
Wonderful, fantastic tour. The tour guide Robert, was extremely informative. He was very clear and entertaining in his explanations of Chinese history and culture. He had the right amount of walking and eating on the tour. He took us through the Chinese garden, through different shops, to a wonderful restaurant and a FANTASTIC tea shop. I would highly recommend this tour!

Julien G.

Yelp
Robert is an excelent host, he will bring you to many places around chinatown and his comments rage from historic to culinary excelency. The lunch was delicious and the menu curated by him made me discover new dishes. Do not hesitate to book him and enjoy the tour!

Gary S.

Yelp
We did both the "Wok around Chinatown" and "Wok around Granville Island", and both were excellent! This is a very personable tour and Bob is extremely knowledgeable of the customs and foods that you will experience. Because Bob is Chinese/Canadian, he is extremely knowledgeable of both Canadian and Chinese foods and customs. You will not go away hungry! You will eat during the tour and have plenty to take back with you. This was probably the best, most interactive, tour that we have ever been on. If we ever get back to Vancouver, we will do both of these tours again, if for no other reason, just to interact with Bob! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!

Yelp
My partner and I went on this fantastic tour around Chinatown with Thomas today. I hugely enjoyed his insight and stories into Chinese Culture and how it arrived and evolved in Vancouver. Even though I live and was raised in Vancouver, the tour taught me a lot of places and history that I never knew of somewhere so close by. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in great food and a great journey into Chinatown past, present and future! The tea ceremony and dim sum was amazing too!
