This place is amazing. Really worth entering and a key monument of Carolingian architecture. Don’t miss the Throne of Charlemagne (it’s upstairs and is only accessible with a guided tour) and Charlemagne’s reliquary. It was the coronation church of the Holy Roman Emperors for over 600 years! Love the interior. Stunning! 🤩

The tour is so good! The guides are knowledgeable, the cathedral is absolutely beautiful, and the history is genuinely insane. From and American perspective, just about everything that you learn about is older than everything in the United States. It really broadens your perspective on history!

Very beautiful place. The architecture is stunning inside and out. The golden statues of the houses in the alter are opened to the public every 7 years. They are gorgeous. It's free - donation boxes and 1 euro for a leaflet.

The Aachen Cathedral is absolutely worth your time if you’re interested in history or architecture. It was built in 796, which makes it one of the oldest cathedrals in Europe as well as being among the first 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites ever listed. The cathedral is most famous for being the final resting place of Charlemagne. With all this standing inside makes you literally feel the history. The architecture is extremely beautiful with a mix of different styles from different periods showing you how different eras left their mark. The cathedral treasury has a good collection of relics and other artifacts that help tell the full story of the place. When we visited we were there on Sunday and it was somewhat packed with people, so on weekends it can get crowded. However the accessibility makes up for it. If you’re in Aachen, well then you better see this historical landmark. Because this cathedral is not just an important religious site but also a piece of European history still standing strong after countless centuries.

Aachen Cathedral, known in German as Aachener Dom, stands as one of Europe’s most historically significant ecclesiastical structures. Commissioned by Emperor Charlemagne in 796, the cathedral represents an enduring testament to Carolingian architectural ambition and religious devotion. Its status as one of the oldest cathedrals on the continent underscores its foundational role in the development of European sacred architecture. The cathedral’s importance is further heightened by its direct association with Charlemagne, who was interred within its walls upon his death. This connection has long contributed to the site’s reverence and its cultural and historical prominence. In recognition of its exceptional universal value, Aachen Cathedral was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Notably, it was among the earliest sites ever to receive this designation, reflecting both its architectural distinction and its deep historical resonance. Overall, Aachen Cathedral embodies a remarkable convergence of historical significance, architectural heritage, and cultural legacy. Its early UNESCO inscription affirms its standing as a landmark of international importance.

I’m not a religious person by any stretch, but this little cathedral radiates a mystical aura that sneaks up on you. The artwork on the walls and ceiling sits close enough to admire without squinting, and the octagonal layout feels delightfully out of place — almost like a distant cousin of the churches in Istanbul. A small space with big presence. Absolutely worth every minute.

The cathedral was built in 796, one of the oldest cathedral in Europe, belongs to the first 12 World Heritage Sites lister by UNESCO. This cathedral is most famous for being the resting place of Charlemagne - the emperor who defined the shape and character of medieval Europe. Here is also the coronation church of 31 German kings from 936 to 1531. The cathedral is a blend of history of architechture and decoration: Carolingian, Byzantine, Gothic, Neo-gothic, Baroque. Every detail is amazing

Yelp
Stopped here as part of our tour of Aachen and definitely not disappointed! This was actually our first stop because I had read some of the history behind the Dom and was absolutely fascinated. We had also read some of the myths surrounding the Dom and new we had to go. The interior was amazing! The ceilings are absolutely beautiful and incorporate so many different styles. The artifacts on display humble the observer due to their antiquity and history. Since we had read up on the Dom before we went, we didn't do the tour, but I wish we had since the tour takes you to parts of the Dom that simply aren't open. I could go into the long history of this place, but others have covered that. I recommend taking the tour and reading about the Dom before you go and take time to simply appreciate the beauty of the building and artifacts!

Yelp
A jewel of Aachen, the central structure of the cathedral is from the ninth century; it was at the center of Charlemagne's domain. The architecture is beautiful and as cosy as Aachen itself.

Yelp
As the most crucial building in Aachen, every tourist needs to visit the Aachen Cathedral, even if you just stay for 5 minutes, it is worth every second. This impressive monument is the oldest Cathedral in northern europe and in 1978 it was added to UNESCO's world heritage sites. For 600 years (936 1531) it witnessed the coronation of 30 german kings and 12 queens and therefore is the most historical building in the city of Aachen.

Yelp
Possibly the most beautiful cathedral in Germany if not Europe. So much history attached. A must see if you're in the area.
