"When it comes to the greatest Danish invention of all time, it’s a toss-up between Legos and the open-faced sandwich. The latter is given the respect it deserves at Aamanns, which has elevated sandwich making to an art form. The lunch menu includes sandwiches made with smoked Icelandic salmon, beef tartare, or pickled herring, and, underneath it all, a slice of organic sourdough bread. Aamanns has a deli and takeout service, but it’s better to visit their restaurant, Aamanns Etablissement. Failing that, stop by the branch at the airport for your last meal in Denmark before you head home."

Tried the restaurant during Dining Week 2021. All of the 5 dishes were tasty, and so were the two types of bread. The service was quick and efficient. The dining room was quite small and a bit loud. Overall, I think it's a good place to go if you are a tourist looking for a modern take on traditional food, or if you love smørrebrød.

Google
Beautiful and great tasting smørebrød combined with excellent service and awesome snaps. We even got to buy a bottle of snaps home (and 4 glasses).

Google
Delicious smørrebrød with a new Nordic twist. The set lunch menu really fills you up and lets you try the traditional varieties. For the price you really need to like this traditional dish already for it to feel worth it ;)

Google
Open-faced sandwich , by Adam A - when in Copenhagen it's a must .. modern interpretation of the classic Danish rye bread sandwich.. We took kitchens choice 5 "small" servings from the menu card , not small at all and very tasty .. herring , tar tar, potato (the classic of the classic) fish and chicken salad.. Some juice also a non alcoholic lunch more appropriate would be to have taken a "snaps" to go with at least the herring.

Google
Really great smørrebrød, with a more modern take on some of the classics. The place is nice and cozy, but a bit too small. We were placed at a table in the corner, where I couldn't even sit completely in front of the table.

Google
It is not just any kind of open sandwich - smørrebrød- that one was here. It's a beautiful modern version of them with delicious and daring flavours. Great bread, great beer and great schnapps. The Øllebrød is also worth giving it a try.

Lovely lunch spot ! Bright, clean, simple decor, friendly service, and very fresh ingredients. Each item was like a piece of art! (Visited back in Jun 2017)

Yelp
A favorite stop on our honeymoon this place really opened our eyes to the amazing world of the open-faced sandwiches know as smørrebrød. We enjoyed a sampling of sandwiches. The rich rye bread on each is such a hearty base to start off the layering. Each sandwich was different but they all share the same theme of rich savory toppings to fill you up. The rare roast beef flavor may have been our favorite. The chicken salad version was a little lighter and tasty. The salmon one was excellent as well and paired well with a rich aioli. We also tried a sort of deconstructed beef version that was tasty as well. 4 smørrebrød was just about the right amount for two people to share and be quite full. We had originally intended to just grab the to go version from the deli but ended up being seated in the more formal area. In the end, we were glad that we got to have the full experience. Part of which is enjoying little snaps of alcohol as a palate cleanser while you dine. Our waiter made great suggestions for flavors, and even though we were more hesitant about the herbal flavors they served their purpose really well. We can't wait to return.

Yelp
Yelp Review 2023 #225: Aamanns has been on the Michelin Guide for years. They have a few locations sprinkled in Copenhagen. They serve smørrebrød (open-faced sandwich) and a nice variety at that. You can get a sandwich without the other piece of bread for about 90DKK average which translates to $10-20. What's nice about smørrebrød is that you can try 2 or more kinds without feeling sick to your stomach. I've visited 2 Aamanns locations while in Copenhagen. What I tried at this location were: Roast Beef Smørrebrød: Roast beef slices with béarnaise, pickled cucumber, mushrooms, crispy potatoes and thyme Pork Belly Smørrebrød: Fried pork belly with apples, cinnamon, kohlrabi and pork cracklings. The restaurant is clean, has natural lighting, has a few tables but it never super crowded so, it was relaxed when I went here.

Yelp
A great place to try smorrebrod after a trip to Rosenborg Castle. I first tried the four that came with the sampler menu. The braised pork was my favorite, followed by the avocado. My group tried the smoked halibut, Christmas pork, and rump steak smorrebrod as well. We got here around 12:30, and it wasn't too busy. By the time we were finishing our food, there was a line of customers. The service was attentive. The prices were okay, more affordable than other locations.

Yelp
Awesome open faced sandwiches. Made to order, delicious sandwiches. Perfectly combined fresh ingredients to please your palate. Instagram-able foods here!! Cute dining area. Eat there or take out. Presentation is everything. You won't be disappointed when you go here. The sandwiches are so delightful, amazing, and delectable.

Yelp
Going to Copenhagen without trying the smørrebrød is like coming to San Francisco without having one of those absurdly expensive sourdough bowls of clam chowder at Fisherman's Wharf. OK, that wasn't a great parallel because there is far more variety with smørrebrød, which is a uniquely Danish creation, an open-faced sandwich that may have any combination of toppings on a piece of buttered rye bread. A lot of places serve it in the city, mostly in small kiosks and crowded delis that require you to know what you're ordering quickly lest you confront impatient customers behind you in line. The Danes are really laid back except when it comes to their smørrebrød. That's what makes Aamann's Take-Away the ideal place for a virginal smørrebrød eater like myself because they have all their beautifully constructed sandwiches on display. All you need to do is point... you know how to point, don't you, Ed? You just put your finger in the air and... point. And point I did. At the Roast Beef with Nectarines, Walnuts, Romaine and Shallots (see photo). And at the Salmon with Cabbage, Dill and Crispy Bacon (see photo). And also at the Turkey with Fennel, Dill and Tomatoes (see photo). In short order, they were recreated photogenically on an oblong plate (see photos). Understand I was there at close to 4PM since I was hungry after a long afternoon tour of Hamlet's Castle in Helsingør about an hour or so away. You would think pickin's would be slim and service rather surly, but that was not the case. The staff was more than cordial, and they were more than happy to serve me, the lone customer eating smørrebrød at that hour. The take-away part of the operation looks like an upscale deli with modern white cafe tables (see photo). I had the place to myself, so I could truly enjoy the meticulously constructed sandwiches without interruption. Total price for my order came to around 55 DKK, which is approximately $10. Chef Adam Aamann has put a truly fresh and local spin on a traditional Danish treat, and the best news is that he has opened a new Aamann's near Union Square in Manhattan. San Francisco next, please. FOOD - 5 stars...fresh, creative takes on smørrebrød delighted this tourist AMBIANCE - 4 stars...place matches the food SERVICE - 4.5 stars...very nice and attentive no matter how close to closing it is TOTAL - 5 stars...a must-eat when you're in wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen

Yelp
I thought that I have to try open sandwiches 'cause I'm in Denmark. I found this place after googling. Ordered a sampler of 4 open sandwiches, but was disappointed. All I remembered was that they were small, salty and the bread was hard. (the pork was dry too) I'm not sure if the sampler of that day was below their average or Danish open sandwich is just not my thing. But the presentation was beautiful and the waiter was friendly.

Yelp
This place is just ok. The food isn't as good as I expected. I came here because my friend recommended, but I didn't really like what we got.

Yelp
This was one of the food highlights in Copenhagen! Amazing open sandwiches on dark rye bread, paired with aquavit (Scandinavian schnapps) if you don't have any plans involving open heart surgery after your meal. This stuff is strong. I came here for lunch and it was quite busy but I got seated without much wait. The menu offers several cold and two hot smorrebrods to chose from. I went for the herring, something I hadn't tried before, and the cooked ham with bacon and asparagus. The flavours on both were just divine. I had a glass of wine and some tab water as well and must say that 2 of them were plenty for me. They do recommend you go for three but you'd have to be very hungry to manage that. I take off one star because it is a bit overpriced, even for CPH standards. Other than that, I would 100% go back and can't recommend it enough!

Yelp
Just to sum it short, I'm a foreigner in Denmark who has lived in this country for 10 years and still find it difficult to have a cold lunch in the form of smørrebrød like the native people. That said, it doesn't mean that I don't enjoy having really well-made Danish open sandwiches. Since I don't eat smørrebrød often, I have to make sure the ones that I intake must be of good quality, or I would be sorry forever. So, no to føtex's 3 for 30 kr offer. Aamans, in my most honest opinion, serves one of the best smørrebrød in town. They might not be the traditional kind like Ida Davidsen, but still, it's something that even I could be excited about as a foreigner :P Halfway into December, I booked a table at Aamans for lunch time and found out that they have (only) Christmas menu. To be honest, I'm not fan of herring in any season, but my lunch mate could testify that it was good. My salmon was super as well, with the salmon so thick and moist. However, my favourite piece was obviously the tartar. I must admit that my love affair with raw meat is something of a recent affair but the tartar and roe smørrebrød was so good I felt like declaring my love to it. We downed the smørrebrød with Herlsev Julebryg which I wasn't such a big fan of (sorry IPA, I could never learn to love you) but all in all we had good experience at Aamans. PS: Make sure you book your table, this place is popular and can get pretty crowded during lunch time.

Yelp
We chose the menu "sampler" of open faced sandwiches during the lunch hour. I was impressed by the combination of flavors and how each plate uniquely stood out from the rest. I found the pickling motif very intriguing and enjoyed the feeling of freshness it added to a number of the plates. A few of the plates' sauces were perfectly infused with complementing flavors as well. I think a table of four could easily have been filled by what the two of us attempted to finish, unsuccessfully. Many of the beers available were made special for the establishment itself, and the one I got was a delightful IPA that was not too filling. The staff was friendly and the space well-lit and decorated. I highly recommend!

Yelp
The pictures look so pretty on the website so we booked for both Sunday lunch and Wednesday dinner. For Sunday lunch we ordered three open sandwiches plus tea. The potato sandwich was all right but two fish sandwiches were outstanding. They were just so delicious and pretty. The quince tea was very smooth with nice smell. We think open sandwiches here are better than those at Royal Smushi and Schonnemann. For dinner one of us ordered 4 course menu and the other had to order a la carte. They are not flexible to accommodate for food restrictions. Food was so beautifully presented that we started to take photos which we usually don't do this kind of thing. The dinner plates and bowls were art pieces themselves. We also like the light greenish color of the wall and cute herb plant pot on each table. Food was good but not a "wow" as we experienced at its lunch and a few of other restaurants such as No.2. Taste cannot compete with its appearance. Highly recommend for lunch though.

Yelp
Scandinavians love their smørrebrød (open-faced sandwich), both simple and elegant ones. Aamanns takes this to a gourmet form, while remaining truly Danish - sild (herring), ost (danish cheese), tartarmad (raw beef). Each one is made with such delicate care that you have to restrain yourself for a minute to admire its artistry. The combinations are exciting yet it never feels overreaching its roots. Truly an exemplary New Nordic cuisine. I had (1) Icelandic herring with thin slice of apples and creme fraiche, (2) beef tartare with tarragon jam and almonds, and (3) blue cheese with jellied plums and hazelnuts. Each one is decorated with different greens and ornaments to give great individuality while keeping a clean flavor. The winner of the three smørrebrøds is the blue cheese! If there is one complaint, it's the rye bread itself - the backbone of the smørrebrød - which I felt is about 95% right, just a tad too tough on a bite. Otherwise it's perfect. You'll never see sandwiches the same again. Post-Aamanns, I have always put an extra effort to jazz up my office lunch sandwiches :D

Yelp
This was my first stop in Copenhagen. If you want traditional Danish food and drinks you need to come here. Order some open-faced sandwiches, snaps, local beer and just soak in the culture. It's not cheap but you are paying for the quality. My favorite were the salmon and beef!

Yelp
Liver pâté smørrebrød -- a warm, timeless Danish classic! Aamanns embodies the quinteseential Danish smørrebrød. Open faced sandwich, this restaurant is modern, with classic choices of smørrebrød. You can't go wrong with the liver pâté smørrebrød, which is served warm, on buttered rye bread, with the pâté topped with sautéed wild mushrooms. My mouth salivates just thinking of how amazing this sandwich was. Their chicken salad smørrebrød is a classic, and the salmon is topped with a dill sauce and mustard seeds that I could eat over and over again. Clearly a favourite with the locals, Aamanns does take-away and caters for those who want to serve their amazing sandwiches for a festive gathering. Truly one of the best sandwich shops in all of Denmark, Aamanns is not to be missed-

Yelp
I've had food from both their take away shop and the restaurant (takeaway is excellent and I've reviewed it before). This review is for the restaurant. I went for dinner with three others and we got to taste a large portion of the menu. The service and plate presentation is really lovely. Everything is beautifully plated and, if you care for visual presentation at all, you'll pause to admire the perfectly cubed vegetables before you wolf them down. The wall decor seems like fun Rorschach inkblots in Wedgewood colours: silhouettes of farm animals mirror imaged in white on a pretty blue background. Certainly the delicious painted outlines of duckies, piggies, and cows stirred up my apetite for the food to come. Unfortunately, several of the dishes were over-salted and the chef used a heavy hand without tasting it seems. Since their menu changes seasonally, it's not very useful for me to list the items I had as they probably won't be available at a different time. I'll just say that my starter was good and the dessert and cheese plates were good, but the small dishes in between were very salty and I could not finish one of them because of the salt. I'm sad that the food didn't live up to their appearance, because they make beautiful looking food. But ultimately it's the taste that counts and based on taste alone, I wouldn't go back (at least not for dinner).

Yelp
Service was great and friendly. The interior is small and has 11 or 12 small tables so we had to wait a few minutes. English menu is available. Lunch menu is solely open faced sandwiches & drinks. The food was spectacular. I got the potato one and the flavors were impeccable. I was also going to get the fish of the day one but they had already run out by 1:30 so I asked out server what her favorite was and she said she liked the beef tartare and it was the best! The flavor was great and and the textures were so good, it was topped with cucumber and small chips for a crunch. I also took tastes of my families sandwiches and both cheese ones off the menu I would definitely recommend. They were my favorite after the beef tartare one. The chicken salad, salmon, liver pâté, and herring were also all excellent. They really pair texture well with taste leading to an amazing meal! At then end of your meal get up and pay at the counter. Restroom also available inside.

Yelp
Stunning and tasty food!! Anyone visiting Copenhagen needs to try smørrebrød (open faced sandwiches) and this is a great place to do so. The menu is simple with 8-10 options where you choose either 2 or 3. And pair it with some beer, wine or home made akvavit. Great atmosphere, but not a huge location so I'd recommend making a reservation. Negatives were the mediocre service and price (~150kr for 2, ~$20 or $10 per sandwich). They didn't welcome us or present menus for almost 10 minutes at which time they could only produce one menu for our 3 person table since all others were in use. I'll probably be back sometime when hosting some visitors to DK.

Yelp
Oh what fun it is to try little open face sandwiches that come with all different types of toppings. Dont like one? No worries, try the next little sandwich - which I bet is going to be mighty tasty. Open face sandwiches are a Danish classic. It was on our 'must do/eat' in Copenhagen list. What better place to go then Aamanns, a famous establishment for making yummy sandwiches while making sure they use quality ingredients. We tried four types Beef from Grambogaard - Slices of grilled sirloin with chunky remoulade, horseradish, crispy onions and chervil. Absolutely amazing and my personal favorite. The horseradish wasn't overpowering but provided a bite. The creamy remoulade and the medium rare beef that was served cold. New Potatoes, chicken skin, almonds and ramson. Quite delish! The chicken skin gave a salty crunchy aspect, while the potatoes were cooked just right. Organic eggs with shrimps with green asparagus, dill emulsion and rye crumbs. This was my husband's favorite, which is suprising because he is not a huge shrimp guy. All were awesome. In the deli, they also have a good selection of chilled beer, wines and soda to have while dining and also some for purchase to go.

Yelp
Even though they don't open till noon on Sunday, it is worth the wait. The service was great, just the right amount of attentive. Our waitress recommended a few smørrebrød fillings and we chose three of them and three more. 6 for two people was the perfect amount for brunch. We also tried two aquavits, which they make on site and pair very well with the smørrebrød. The rye bread one is very bready and hearty and the apple-horseradish-lemon is both strong and refreshing. Delicious, non intimidating and perfect for a light brunch near the castle and treasury.

Yelp
There are a lot of great places for smørrebrød in Copenhagen. Aamanns was fantastic. I had their smoked salmon and chicken salad smørrebrød and it was delicious and beautifully presented. Two smørrebrød is enough for one person. Service was great here. I definitely recommend coming here and would come again.

Yelp
Came here for dinner as a group of 5. We got there as soon as it opened (6:30pm on a Saturday). Reservations are recommended, as it filled up pretty quickly after we'd arrived. The only smørrebrød on the menu was a trio, so we ordered that as an appetizer to share. I was a little disappointed to not have more smørrebrød options after reading so much on yelp about 'the best open-faced sandwiches in town', but was pleased that they were really delicious. Quality over quantity! The rest of the food was very good as well - the chicken tartelet (like a chicken pot pie but less creamy, the lamb, the pork terrine. Beautifully presented dishes, on very nice ceramic dishes (kh whurtz) add to the elevated experience. This seems worthy of three $$$s and not two, especially for dinner - we shared appretizers and each got a main course, a drink, and no dessert, and barely walked out under 500kr/person.

Yelp
Once staffed properly the food and service was lovely! Fabulous Danish open faced sandwiches for this Los Angeles family wanting a local experience. All were delicious!

Yelp
I visited this establishment back in Copenhagen Dining Week '14 and was really impressed. The dishes was superb and quite unique at a very reasonable price, because of the event. I explicitly remember getting a fish soup with some glass cabbage strings/noodles, which was really good. Unfortunately when we came back about half a year later it was very different and the dishes was not so exciting this time. The only thing I remember was this piece of pork that has been made in sous vide, which I've gotten a million times before. This time we also had to pay the full price and to me it didn't quite hit the mark. So I am going to judge this on the lowest common denominator.

Yelp
Aamanns has two parts: one is the best open-face sandwich (smørrebrød) place I found in Copenhagen (after lots of testing). The other part, right next door, is a sit-down restaurant. About the sandwiches My favorite was the beef tartare. Once you eat their sandwiches, none other will compare. About the sit-down restaurant Everybody who isn't from Copenhagen talks about Noma. Noma didn't come from nowhere. There are a lot of other top-tier restaurants in the city, and this is one of them. The interior is all wood paneling and minimalist design. The cuisine is definitely Scandinavian updated. Or as our waiter put it, "About 10 years ago, some chefs decided they didn't like Danish cuisine, so they kept the best parts and remade it." Each plate that comes out is arranged to look slightly like a scene from nature or a work of art -- but feels minimal and not too fussy. I loved the freshness of the tomatoes arranged to look like a little colony with globs of cream and diced onions. Somehow, they do magic with potatoes, leeks, and other simple ingredients. The flavors are always fresh and crisp yet unexpected and compelling. Gluten-free notes: I brought gluten-free bread from a nearby bakery and they made me gluten-free sandwiches. Amazing! Delicious! At the sit-down restaurant, nearly all of the dishes were naturally gluten-free.

Yelp
The braised pork open-faced sandwich is delicious! The diced pear and walnuts completed the pork well. Portion is not big...more like a snack between lunch and dinner.

Yelp
One of my favoret places in CPH, open sandwich is a very typical dish from Denmark. Aamanns made the best open sandwich, the pricy but it is total worth it, the taste balance is very good. Strongly recommend to try the one with beef tartar, that is my favorite!

Yelp
Pathetic service. Went there before their closing time : 3 PM (2.55 PM) and was told that they are closed for take out but they can sit us and we can eat.. we said alright, but then another lady at the restaurant came out and said they are closed. We had walked with 2 kids for 20 mins and requested that they please accommodate us, but to no avail. I asked for the supervisor and Runa(the person who (un)helped us mentioned hat the supervisor and manager are out. People working there are on a power Trip.. would be great if the management looks into their attitude and work ethic.

Yelp
We came here on a walking food tour of Copenhagen. Hands down the best smorrebrod we had in Copenhagen.

Yelp
We usually stop by Aamanns at least once a year. In the beginning we thought the Open Sandwiches was fantastic. This time we were disappointed by the excessive amounts of sauces/relishes/mayo's and lack of true toppings. For instance the egg and shrimp sandwich only had 3 small shrimps on it. But the sandwiches are still creative and I think we just came at the busiest time and therefore things just maybe was not to par. The service however was so rude and argumentative and terrible that I am inclined to only give them 1 star. We informed our waitress that 3 in a party of 8 had severe peanut allergies, 2 had tree nut allergies and one was allergic to carrots and one to apples. The waiter didn't seem very concerned but since we have eaten here several times before and since the kitchen always have been careful we felt safe anyway, and reminded her to please make sure the kitchen knew and that no one could have anything with peanuts. The wait times were long and we had to remind our waitress of drinks, water etc. When we asked for a more water we were told in a snappy voice that the bottle was standing at the table - to the point that we almost felt embarrassed asking. However, the bottle was in deed empty and to just bring one bottle for a long table for 8 is simple not enough. We they even charged for water for 8 so why make a fuss over actually bringing the tap water to the table? There seemed to never be enough water on the table and we kept having to ask for some. It is not that we just drank water, we had beers, sodas, snaps etc but even with snaps it is nice to have a glass of water as well. The Heering came and seemed ok but the marinated hearing did smell a bit which we found odd. The waitress said they were perfectly fine and that is the house marinade. My husband ate them which he never should have done. The next day he had loose bowels, cramps and felt really weak and crappy. The heerings was the only thing that he ate that no-one else had. Then came plates of lard with peanuts and butter! We asked the waitress to remove the platters since we were highly allergic and she simply refused. She said the people who are not allergic should still try it and they were not touching each other etc etc etc etc etc. She was really nasty and condescending and not at all accommodating. Tried to explain to her that if someone is allergic to peanuts they can't even sit next to it and they may react if anyone eats them and kisses them. She would NOT budge. She ended up graciously bringing a separate plate of butter. No one ate the peanut lard or butter from those plates. Lucky no-one wanted to risk anyones safety and besides everyone thought the lard and butter looked and smelled gross. Sadly the waitress insisted on keeping it on our table, making us all very uncomfortable. After our food, which was generally good and the reason that they get 2 stars we sat for ever waiting for coffee and desert menus. The waitress cleared the table and asked if we wanted coffee and deserts. Some said no to deserts but we did say that at least 3 guests wanted deserts. We also wanted coffee as we had come straight from a flight from USA and needed some strong coffee. We waited and waited and waited. When we reminded our waitress after 20-30 minutes she told us that now the kitchen was closed and we could neither get desert nor coffee. She was rude and told us that we should have kept up with it ourselves and that they cannot tell guests that they are closing the kitchen. She refused serving us even a cup of coffee in spite we said to her come on we asked for it before you closed and you ignored us for 20-30 minutes. She would not budge and was very rude and rigid and argumentative. In fact argumentative is the word I would use for her throughout the entire dinner. And perhaps lazy. We would wait for 45 min between courses and we would not be able to get water without insisting. The waitress seemed to hate her job or maybe she was just hung over from too many christmas lunches. Still it is not professional to treat any patrons this badly. My husband said we should just stop eating here - even though we don't come often we used to come at least 1-2 times per year, but this was out of line. The mistakes on the food part we take as being too busy as the food usually is very good. Therefore they get 2 stars.

Yelp
There are a lot of places that serve Danish open faced sandwiches, but this one puts a fantastic modern twist on them. The menu isn't large, but there is a little bit of every type of protein. We were there on a Sunday afternoon, and the choice of two or three were for a very reasonable price. We decided to go with a salmon, herring, pork terrine, tartare and chicken salad and were not disappointed. The ingredients are all so fresh and flavorful, each balanced and standing out in their own way. The salmon and tartare were particularly good. The bread was top quality too. There is also quite the assortment of homemade snaps to choose from too. The are quite friendly and the restaurant is very homey. Absolutely worth the visit.

Yelp
We went with the smørrebrød sampler and were not disappointed. The traditional herring smørrebrød was my favorite. The waiter also encouraged us to order the homemade aquavit, which were an interesting addition to the meal.

Yelp
Aamanns is a delightful little establishment in Østerbro near many popular tourist sites. A perfect place for lunch, situated walking distance from the Art Museum (Statens Museum for Kunst), the Geologisk Museum, the Botanical Gardens or a tour of the Crown jewels at the nearby Rosenborg Slot. Smørrebrød is the very Danish open face sandwich - which you can find at many restaurants in town. Do yourself a favor and skip the other places. Go to Aamanns. Fresh, delicious, high quality ingredients served beautifully and with lovely service - a seeming rarity in Copenhagen. The Sunday frokost menu (lunch menu) had 7 distinct and varied options for sandwiches which come in 2 or 3 pieces for 155 DKK or 215 DKK respectively regardless of choice. And by sandwich - this is the Danish definition. There is only one piece of bread - a small slice of Danish rugbrød, or "rye bread" (but that is misleading to an American palette. Don't think of the New York deli brown rye bread with caraway seeds that you would pile with pastrami and sauerkraut between two thick slices and pick up with your hands to chow down.) Danish rugbrød is dense, chewy, seedy, nutty, sour and delicious. An acquired taste on its own. I am personally addicted now. Smørrebrød uses this delicious bread sliced thin as a base. Toppings for smørrebrød define the purveyor and Aamanns offers supreme representatives. The blend of different flavors on each of our offereings was perfect. Between the four of us - we tried all 7 choices - ordering 2 options each. I LOVED the curried herring (very Danish - seriously try it - it is delicious and not like the soupy yellow mayonaise-y versions I'd seen elsewhere - I loved it.) I also tried the pork cheeks with apple and créme frâiche. Delicious - but I was loving the beef tartare my husband ordered as well as the other beef my mom chose. Both amazing. The chicken salad was fine. Predictable, not epic - as was the avocado and greens option. If you are in to smoked things (and even if you aren't - you're in Denmark - try something different!) choose the smoked cod - it is minced and perfectly accompanied - so delicious. With you meal - try the house infused snaps - it's traditional. Just say Skål and look each person in the eye when you toast before sipping or slamming that toast. I loved my "Porse" option - a spiced herbacious option that mellowed the sometimes harsh taste of traditional Danish snaps. Tell the server what flavors you like and don't like - they can help you find one you might like. Try a couple different ones. Aamann's delicious offerings of modern smørrebrød and house infused snaps will convert the curious. Set in clean, modern Danish designed restaurant with lovely accommodating service as well. Skål! Cheers from Copenhagen!

Yelp
This place was amazing. There were 5 of us and we.all ordered something different. Everyone had a great meal and best of all it had glutton free bread.

Yelp
I always visit Aamanns whenever I am in Copenhagen. Their modern smørrebrød never disappoints. If you have room to spare, I would order the 3-smørrebrød combo and try some of everything. I would pick one herring, one vegetarian and another just for fun. You will find the smørrebrød each a work of art in itself. Reservations recommended.

Yelp
Aamanns Etablissement is the premier place to get the unique Danish treat, smørrebrød. It is a quaint little restaurant not far from the national museum and some gorgeous parks. The service here was spotty by American standards, but when you aren't tipping you really shouldn't expect much. There also only seemed to be 2 servers for roughly 10 tables and the large crowd of never ending take away orders. I advise getting there before noon to avoid the rush. We decided to split 1 hot smørrebrød and 3 cold smørrebrød. This was too much food for 2 people. I'd suggest 1-2 cold smørrebrød (or 1 hot, it comes with 2 slices of bread) and the chef's selection of 3 canape smørrebrød for two people. My girlfriend loved everything we had. I like everything but I wasn't over the moon for the most part. I really enjoyed the warm liver pate with bacon and mushrooms. It was served with some gorgeous beets and herbs. It was a really wonderful combination. We also go the Pickled Herring, Potato, and Beef Tartare smørrebrød. They were good, but I think we were a little over adventurous with our selections. I could have used something simple like a cheese or roast beef sandwich. The Pickled Herring was good, except the put something very crunchy on it which gave me the unpleasant sensation of crunching fish bones. So while it tasted great, it was difficult to enjoy. We both really liked the Potato. The fresh vegetal taste of the potato was strange to our American palates, and we really enjoyed it! If the restaurant is busy take out is your best bet. And this place is a little pricey. But I think the quality of the food and presentation more than make up for it.

Yelp
This restaurant was delightful. The presentation of the open-faced sandwiches was amazing. I have never seen such beautiful 'sandwiches' before. The portions were quite large - I would have been just fine with 1 sandwich but I'm still glad I ordered 2 sandwiches because it was a treat just to see them. The water was indeed free which was another added bonus, and the service was impeccable. I was particularly impressed because there was only 1 man working front of the house, which means he sat people, took their orders, served their drinks and food, cleared, and bussed tables. Highly recommend Aamanns. This is a must visit in Copenhagen!

Yelp
AMAZING, best open faced sandwiches, each with their own flavor and each looks like a piece of art. I got the salmon, chicken, shrimp, and herring and its unforgetttable

Yelp
Went there because of all the fabulous reviews. Didn't really like the sandwiches after seeing the chef constantly touching his face and answering phone calls while he was making sandwiches.

Yelp
I came here as it was part of a Copenhagen food tour I was on. I tried 4 of their open face sandwiches. Pretty tasty, but I did check out the prices on the menu and saw that it is slightly pricey... Glad I got to try this place from my food tour!

Yelp
Tasty new Nordic Danish open sandwiches. The herring and beef were excellent, the chicken salad one was good. I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Copenhagen.

Yelp
BEST smorrebrod I've ever had! The menu may be small, but everything is of the highest quality and delicious! It puts my dad's to shame! I highly recommend this restaurant over any others if you want to try it only once while in Copenhagen. They're expensive, but worth every penny. We had four total for two of us and were satisfied, but could have had 1-2 more if we wanted to be stuffed. :)

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place. Delicious fresh ingredients and good service. We had the pan fried fish, brisket and North Sea cheese. Best meal we had in Denmark. Their beer choices and homemade Aquavit were great punctuation.

Yelp
We stopped off for lunch after a visit to the Statens Museum for Kunst around the corner. It is advisable to make a reservation, but they have a deli with takeaway items if you can't get a table. The staff were friendly from the start, and very helpful with my food allergies throughout the ordering process. The smørrebrød is fresh and bursting with flavor (I particularly enjoyed the beef, herring and salmon). I look forward to trying their New York location!

Yelp
For some of the most refined smørrebrød you're going to find in Copenhagen, trek out to Aamann's and order the sirloin, curried chicken, herring, or potato sandwiches served in hearty portions. I stopped in here as part of a food tour, and it was a great highlight -- the best midday meal we had in the city.

Yelp
I'm so glad we tried the smørrebrød at Aamanns first, because all the other ones we had afterwards, paled in comparison. Beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. We had stopped in for a small snack and shared: *The roast beef (Slices of roast sirloin with fried onions, coarse, chunky remoulade and grated horse radish) *The smoked salmon (Cold smoked Icelandic salmon with elderflower-pickled cucumber, water cress crème and rye chips). I'm not a big fan of smoked salmon in general, but I've done a complete 180. I wish we had more than one - why oh why did we only come there for a snack?? When having smørrebrød at the other place we tried, it was obvious how much better the ingredients were at Aamanns. If you're ever in Denmark, go here FIRST.. it will cost you a pretty penny (It was about $11 per open face sandwich, and you'd need at least 2 or 3 per person) but it will be worth it.

Yelp
This place is so worth it, I had the beef tartar sandwich. Even though it was small, it was divine. I love the interior decor of the place and the beef was well seasoned. Might be back for another lunch break :)

Yelp
Herring plate was good but a lot of food for two to start lunch, so you should really be into herring. The fish with the shooting star was good but the accompanying sauce was a bit overwhelming. The chicken salad was almost all sauce, little chicken. Really a mixed bag here. Did like the intense "snaps", infused grain alcohol shots.
