My wife and I stayed at Aaron's Cottage for a week as we visited Hilo in order to see the Kilauea eruption on June 29th. We were very pleased with the condition of the room (we were in cottage #3) and the reasonable price compared to other lodgings in Hilo. The cottages are in easy travel distance to downtown Hilo and a variety of restaurants and attractions (e.g. Ken's Pancake House, Jackie Rey's, Moon and Turtle, Lyman House, etc.). The ocean front is within easy walking distance of the cottages. The proprietors included nice touches like a bag of Famous Amos cookies, a granola bar, and in-room coffee (with real half-n-half!).|There are a couple things to be aware of at Aaron's. The Hilo airport is nearby and there are occasional flights that take off in the middle of the night. The drive to Aaron's goes past an industrial port area that is not beautiful, but the area around the cottages is quite nice. The shower in the bathroom is enclosed on only two sides, which we actually liked, but the water can splash over a large area of the floor.|Overall, Aaron's perfectly suited our accommodation needs during our one week stay in Hilo. Very satisfied!

Google
Cute cottage with very nice management. The rooms are clean and the AC works well. They provide towels and soap, shampoo, etc. There is a small kitchen that is shared among a few cottages. The owners also let you help yourself to the fresh fruit in the garden! Also very close to a beautiful secluded beach.

The room was clean and the bed is comfortable. The cottages are close to the airport and along the coast. The staff and owner is very helpful and friendly. The a/c in cottage 1 hummed very loud, so we opted to open the windows for fresh air, only one problem, the area is infested with coqui frogs. A stereo of coqui frogs, no one should go through on their vacation. That's why I had to give this place 2 stars.

Enjoyed a nice long weekend here in Bungalow #5, a private detached studio with a queen bed. The bungalow is well appointed with everything you'll need, even a fully equipped kitchen. The surroundings were quiet and peaceful and I could park right in front of the unit making it easy to come and go. For the price this was one of the best kept secrets around, and supporting a local business is a bonus. The owners seem to put a lot of attention to detail in every aspect of their business and they're readily available to address any concerns. A better experience for me than a normal hotel situation. I will definitely be back next time I travel to Hilo to visit family and friends. Photo of view and parking out the front door.

We stayed at Aaron’s Cottage for three nights in room 8. This room shares walls on both sides. The walls don’t block out much noise, but he other guests were quiet enough so it wasn’t a big problem. The room was clean except for the floor. I did not want to walk around barefoot. It was not hot during our stay, but the room was exceptionally humid all the time. Everything in the room was wet continuously. It didn’t matter whether the windows were open or closed and the ceiling fan was always on. I couldn’t wait to go home to dry out. A dehumidifier would have been a tremendous help. I probably won’t stay here again for that one reason. Humid outdoors is one thing, but indoors should be comfortably dry. ||The location of Aaron’s Cottage worked out well for us. It is very close to a tiny hidden beach and close enough to the rest of Hilo, but you’ll need a car. The drive to Volcanoes National Park is less than an hour. ||The backyard was nice with lots of trees and places to sit. The shared kitchen could be helpful, but we didn’t use it. There’s a coffee maker in the room with some coffee, which is appreciated. There’s also a mini fridge in the room. ||Communication was great! Check-in was simple and the door code was sent via text. WiFi is very weak and drops often.

Google
Great location beautiful little spot in Hawaiian homelands near the beaches. The rooms are not cottages. They’re like motel rooms and they are tiny. There’s no service of the rooms while you stay there and there’s no washcloths which is annoying. It’s nice to have the shared kitchen because it saves money to make a meal or coffee. It’s decently clean. I was staying in the room number 10 which is on the kitchen and that is a source of noise. When I booked the room, they didn’t tell me it was on the kitchen, which they should have so I tried to ask to change my reservation or move my room, but the owner was not responsive and was annoyed. Oh well. But it’s affordable and it’s a Great Location and you get what you pay for.

We were very happy with the location. Close to swimming lagoon with locals picnicking made us feel like we were in the real Hawaii. the family cottage had lots of room, a state of the art kitchen, washing machine and dryer, comfortable beds and good linen. You need a car but this adds to the experience. So much nicer to be in a house on its own green block than a resort.Aircon and fans made the temperature great for sleeping. Good base to explore the volcanic area.

Yelp
Spectacular in every way. Me and my 3 kiddoes stayed 4 nights in the family cottage & wished we could have stayed longer. Like forever. Very clean, beautiful grounds, close to everything. Very smooth check-in, secure parking. Total Hilo vibe. I can not wait to return! Mahalo!!

Yelp
Aaron's Cottage is a great alternative to the hotels and other inns nearby when it comes to overall costs. This particular room I had was clean and well-kept and had what was described. It's a self check-in process and the instructions provided via text and on Airbnb were clear and concise. If you need assistance, you can call their numbers provided on the small office space between the carports. There is a printed welcoming letter attached to the clip next to the room door. Only thing that is not provided is a continental breakfast, so that needs to be updated if it hasn't already. I was provided with a small snack pack and coffee packs and water bottles, however. There is on-site parking available in either of their two carports, but it's first-come first-served. Chock's Beach is a short walk to the end of the road. In Cottage Room #3, the bathroom itself is a bit odd in that the shower is right next to the sink and the toilet, so the floor can get very slippery when wet. Also, the kitchen is shared and you are given a separate code to get in there. Not sure what the other rooms are like though...their website has more details. Free wifi is included, and a Roku TV is also available. The rooms are not entirely soundproof though.

Yelp
Location is amazing. Staff were very professional, friendly and awesome. They accommodated us to store our luggage's in a unit hours before check in. Definitely a place we will come back to

Yelp
Better than any hotel in Hilo. Safe and secure. I would definitely come back here. There's cats and my kids loved it. For Hawaii it has its normal things also by the beach and fun location. Aloha.

Yelp
I've needed to make repeated trips to Hilo this year and had to find accommodations that wouldn't break my bank account. My first attempt, reviewed elsewhere on this site, was, uh... not successful. But Aaron's is a good, solid place to stay if you are price conscious and don't need anything fancy. My cottage, no. 10, was quite comfy, the A/C worked well (though I didn't always need it) and in general was just fine. With a fridge and coffeemaker in the room and a small communal kitchen close by it's easy to make your own breakfast and save on the restaurant bills. And the guy in charge -- Aaron? I don't think I ever confirmed his name, lol -- is quite agreeable and helpful. Another bonus is that it's quite close to a string of quite beautiful beach parks. There's a small beach at the end of the street, but if you're really in the mood for a dip in the ocean to swim, there are better swimming spots just a few minutes' drive away. You do need to bring your own shampoo -- they supply body wash, but that's it. The value-per-dollar factor here is off the charts. I will need to return to town in 2-3 weeks and this is where I'll stay.

Yelp
Recommending this place would be the last thing I'd do. First of all, we couldn't get ahold of them for the longest time. It was our check in time but no body was there to assist us. Called them over 10 times using 3 different phones and nobody answered. Squandered time waiting around for early 2 hours and had to bother the others who are staying there asking how to check in and if anybody is around. They were guests that have been there for some time and kindly helped us. Seems like the people in charge was gone. We gave up and went out for dinner. When I called again after trying 10 more times, someone finally answered in a nonchalant voice. All the missed calls and they didn't bother calling back..? Wow. They told me the room was ready so we headed back. They just told us the pin code and room number over the phone so we checked in ourselves. The first thing we noticed upon entering the room was the fact that it was a room for 2 when we had asked for a room for 3. There was one queen sized bed and that was it. Called the office, but nobody answered. Seriously? I was extremely upset, called a couple more times and looked around the facility when I finally found Robert who took care of us. We told him that we had reserved a room for 3. Then he tells us he can bring in a bed. Really? He really thought we want to be cramped up in that tiny room. I asked for a bigger room and he suggested that we can have another room that's next to us. My friend was already in a bad mood and didn't want to keep them waiting so I just said ok. He then had the room cleaned up and we had to kill time again until that was done. Afterward, we noticed that there was a big dead roach in the corner of our room and somebody's used piercings on the table. When everybody's obsessed right now with sanitizing and cleaning, they really just left somebody's used piercings there. I didn't do anything about it though; we didn't want to waste time calling another 50 times. The shower room did not have shampoo or body soap and the WiFi did not work. My friends are moving away so it was our last trip together. Would have been nice if we could've stayed in one room instead of spending time in two separate rooms. They also gave us the pin code to our rooms to enter, but didn't give us an option to change the pin code afterward. It is not a very secure room so we all had to carry around our valuables everywhere we went. Robert was a friendly man, but its best to book elsewhere.

Yelp
My family and I had a wonderful stay at Aaron's Cottages. The cottage was clean, beautiful and comfortable. Rob was very responsive while we were staying and answered all of our questions by text. We also needed laundry detergent and he stopped by with some for us. The location was beautifully surrounded by trees and foliage. The area was quiet. There were 2 beaches nearby. I would highly recommend Aaron's cottages.

Yelp
Dont let pictures fool you. You are there on vacation to enjoy your family they cant even sit out side for picnic and singing. There is no hours saying what time not to be outside for company. Going out side of our door there was dig shit. Been there everyday not clean up. Trash I'm the back was full and over flowing. Better to get a place where you are taken care of. We felt like tipping toeing when we come and go. We tried to stay away only when we have to sleep. Like I said sont let the pictures they take of the place fool you

Yelp
Oh my, where to start? Maybe I should start with the not-so-good to get those out of the way first. 1. The property is just a renovated house with carport driveway, and the sign is small so you are most likely to miss it. Sign is lighted after dark though, it is written on a turtle shaped short white post, refer to the picture I posted for better reference. Luckily it is located at a dead-end street so you know you are on the correct street. The house is right after the big sign for Arnott's Lodge when you come in on Keokea Loop, the very inconspicous house right after that sign is your destination. 2. Room is not very soundproof, the jalousie styled windows doesn't help either. So the frogs croaking away at night might be a big issue for light sleepers, so take that into consideration when you are booking. 3. If you are arriving after 8pm, you most likely won't be greeted by the owners for the check in process. There will be a printed welcoming letter taped to your room door, but you have to use flashlight or your cellphone to see it since the porch isn't lighted. All instructions will be on that paper, so check in is relatively hassle-free. The owners live right next door, so if you need them for anything they are nearby. 4. Driveway can park two cars, and it is on a first come first serve basis. So if you are the third party, you will have to park on the big grass yard at the front. Just watch out for the tree, and if it rained, watch out for muddy grass lawn. 5. I don't think there is room service, but you can also double check with the owners on that. Now that is done, let's talk about all the PROS! We reserved two nights for room #7. Island style decoration with lots of windows. Ceiling fan and air-conditioner available. We didn't use the AC but owner said it works fine, you just need to give it a bit time to work its magic and you'll have an air conditioned room. 1. Very homey and welcoming, amenities include: coffee maker, two mugs, a small fridge, a small dining table, TV, closet space. The bathroom has some cute decorations and in general it feels as if we are staying at a friend's place instead of booking a hotel room. 2. Wifi available, though signal is a bit slow, but it works and it is free. 3. Hairdryer available, body wash is provided, but no shampoo or conditioner. Huge stand-in shower with pedestals. Showerhead is actually the take-off type, so cleaning those hard to get places is much easier! 4. Back patio has chairs and a small table so you can enjoy the nice big back yard. Back patio leads to a separated room that is the kitchen, with working stove, stocked with pots and pans, dinnerware and such so you can cook some light meal if you desire. Just remember to clean the dishes well! It is a rainforest and insects are plenty. 5. Breakfast is provided at the kitchen in the back every morning starting from around 6am. The first day owner provided canadian bacon and home backed sweet bread rolls. Eggs were DIY. So we made scrambled eggs ourselves while another room made sunny-side ups. The second day owner said to make lives easier for us and so we don't have to wash any dishes, she made our breakfast and put it in to-go containers. Second day's breakfast had: half of a papaya, sliced strawberries and a lemon wedge, hash browns, scrambled eggs and sausage patties. Home-cooked meals that are both healthy and delicious! YUM! 6. The back yard is HUGE! So many fruit trees too! There are coffee, cacao, papaya, apple banana, pineapple, mandarin oranges and some other ones that I don't recognize. They also raise their own chickens, so the eggs we had for both mornings were fresh out of the pen! 7. They are located in a dead end street. At the end of the street to the left is a small access road that lead to a beach. Beach is closed after dark and opens at around 6-7am. So 2minutes walk from the cottage you can have a nice quiet beach with the view of the Hilo Bay. There are also several beach parks within walking (or driving if you so prefer) distance from the cottage, and they were all great spots for sunrise, turtle spotting, sunbathing or any other beach-related activities you do desire. 8. Pet owners rejoice, for this is a pet friendly facility! We've seen two parties with huge dogs on our second day here, so for people who love traveling with their furry family members, another place on your list! Friendly owners, great breakfast, homey welcoming rooms and great location, we've enjoyed this place so much that we are already planning on booking it again for our next visit.

Yelp
We stayed here for one night while spending 2 days on the Big Island. The cottage is a bit hard to find; we had to stop at another place to check our directions. Turns out we passed by it a few times already but weren't aware since we had expected the cottage to have a sign (it doesn't). The innkeepers were not there to greet us when we arrived which made things a little confusing. After parking our car in the shared driveway, we walked around back and surveyed the place. We located our rooms and the communal kitchen, which appeared quite dirty. Probably harmless, but I would not be comfortable cooking in that kitchen! Speaking of cooking, we did not get the family cooked breakfast everyone else seemed to get in other reviews. I feel like I totally missed out!! The rooms themselves are decent enough, with comfortable beds and free wifi. The bathrooms were mostly clean (dust and dirt in the corners) and fully stocked with all the usual necessities. We met the innkeepers on our way out after checking in, and they seemed friendly and recommended things to do, places to see. Overall, a good place to stay while in Hilo if you just want a comfortable place to sleep and are not expecting the Hilton, but not the easiest to find.

Yelp
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Aaron's Cottage. I loved that the cottage was situated very close to downtown Hilo, yet, in a quiet remote area away from all the hustle and bustle of the city. Depending on when you arrive, you may or may not encounter the Alan, the owner of Aaron's Cottage. If you don't see him, there's nothing to worry about because he'll have a handwritten note attached to your door with instructions on how to enter (code is last 4 digits of your phone number). Alan was a fantastic host who was friendly and reminded me a lot of Pat Morita (aka Mr. Miyagi). One of the perks of staying at Aaron's Cottage is serving yourself breakfast in a shared kitchen. I was somewhat disappointed in the fruits that were provided for us, after reading about what others had during their stays, but fruits are seasonal so I fully understand. The facility has a washer (fee required) and dryer (free) for guests to use and parking on-site (2 cars on the driveway, 2 to 3 cars on the grass). There's a "Secret Beach" a short walk away at the end of Keokea Loop where turtles come to rest. We didn't spot any but still enjoyed it, nonetheless. The rates at Aaron's Cottage are affordable but keep in mind that the amenities are limited. If you're seeking cleanliness and amenities of a 5-star hotel, this isn't the place for you. If you're a budget traveler who just needs a cozy place to stay, this is definitely the place for you. You're going to have geckos running around your front porch and insects flying or crawling around in the shared kitchen or in your room. It's Hawaii!

Yelp
Aloha! If you are looking to find the real and authentic Hawaii, this is the place to stay. We stayed here, all five of us; three adult kids...my husband and myself, in rooms 1, 2 and 3. My children had never been to Hawaii, and we wanted them to see where their Grandmother was born and raised, after her passing. Inn-keepers, Penne and Alan were amazing. They tend to you and your family, as if you were their own family...yet they are not intrusive, giving you plenty of privacy. They provided breakfast each morning; locally grown fruits, fresh baked favorites and island foods, which I really appreciated, savored and remembered from my own childhood. We loved the down-home atmosphere; cozy rooms that were nestled within a small, tropical neighborhood. All within a short walking distance from breath-taking ocean vistas, a fabulous little ice cream shop and convenient family style restaurants. We did not find it difficult to find, and we got there in the dead of night. We had great wifi reception and while the TV worked just fine....we sure didn't have time to watch anything! We will come back again, and again....and only stay with Aaron's Cottage from now on. Mahalo!

Yelp
This was an excellent place to stay in Hilo and I'm sad we were there only one night. Alan (the innkeeper) flagged us down after we drove by it a couple of times looking for it (there's no sign) and was very nice. The room itself was great. It had a queen size bed, mini refrigerator, two fans, AC, and a TV. The bed was very comfortable and had really nice sheets. The bathroom was fully stocked with a bunch of very soft thick towels. There is a kitchen that is shared between all three rooms there that has juice, cereal, milk and some other things that he said we could help ourselves to which was really nice. For breakfast, they set out grapes, guava, and a fresh homemade blueberry walnut bread which was excellent. They also had fresh eggs in the refrigerator to make if you wanted (and we did), as well as cereal, milk, and passion guava juice. There was a little problem with the TV signal getting fuzzy in the upper channels too which was weird. Overall we had a great experience staying here and would do it again if we're ever in Hilo.

Kristen L.

Yelp
The kitchen had a stove, microwave, and fridge. One could provide all their meals between the kitchen and the individual refrigerators in each room. I will be in Hilo frequently and came hoping this could be my new Hawaii base. When I spoke with the owner, it was clear that this cottage is his life dream and passion and that he makes every effort to make it a high quality and highly enjoyable experience for guests. I found out speaking with him that the room I had been in had been occupied for almost a month previously, and the speculation is that they did not keep things as clean as they should have. I was assured my experience had never happened for anyone else, ever. I was offered two nights free on my next stay with them, if I stay with them again. I did like the place, the people, and the proximity to the ocean. I am not sure I can erase the memory of finding a cockroach between my sheets at night enough to visit again, but I am not prepared to tell others to avoid it either. My first day, I killed eight bugs in the bathroom. The next morning, I reported the problem to a very friendly and likable property manager. He said he would take care of it. That evening I killed a spider above the bed, a mosquito eater IN the bed, and several small flying bugs. The next day I killed ants IN THE BED, two cockroaches, and six small black bugs from the first day. I freaked out. That freak out won me two evenings in a non- infested room that was quite pleasant. One could even hear the ocean. If this had been the end If the story, I probably would not have left a review as they made an attempt to make things right. That did not happen though. I was told a can of Raid had been used on my old room and I needed to go back into it for four more days to make space for other guests who were coming in. Lacking options, as a refund was refused, I continued to kill several more beetles and flying bugs back in Raid-smelling insect nirvana, in addition to a cockroach that was in my sheets. The kitchen also had ants in the sugar bowl; mold, a dead fly, and old rice in the rice maker; and ants on the stove, fridge, cutlery drawer, microwave, and counters. All of which I also killed and cleaned. So, great place. Bad experience. But it seems like it was a one-off bad experience. The people, the facility, and the proximity to the ocean almost made up for it. It was a bit like being at camp, actually.

Yelp
We stayed here 2 days ago for 1 night. It was a quick stay, and with all the reviews that I read, I honestly wasn't expecting much. We arrived early (around 2pm), and found a note on the door with the door code to let ourselves in. Alan came by about 10/15 minutes later, apologizing that he wasn't in when we arrived. He guided us towards the shore/beach access, showed us the shared kitchen, pointed to where he and his wife lived (so that we could contact them if we needed anything), and made sure that we'd settled in ok. Our room was definitely clean. We stayed in #7, had a mini fridge stocked with water, free wifi, private bathroom, a/c, tv, and small dining table. Towels were more than enough and pleasantly soft n' fluffy :) All in all I was pleased with what we got for the price. It's close enough to everything Hilo, and not hard to find via gps.

Yelp
Aloha! We were doing a project in Hilo, so we booked this B&B place. We could get in the room directly without talking with someone directly. Just use "our" code on the lock. That was nice because we were tired. Room was clean and ready. My wife loved their breadfruit (ulu) shower curtain. (I'm wondering where they bought it). there is a common room/kitchen, where they bring stuff for breakfast each morning. Every day its a little bit different. I was surprised they had grapes! They should use only things grown on this island - I think. The best were eggs. I'm sure they are local! So tasty. I'm rating this place with 4*. I took one star off because of the kitchen. I think there should be a general cleaning and more focus on daily status. I three away A rotten pepper, oranges and some very expired things. Otherwise it's a great place! I would recommend to owners to brew coffee in the morning in kitchen. Coffeemakers in the rooms don't look so good and if they brew coffee, more ppl can enjoy it and no waste. Kona coffee is one of the best in the world! We had a good time in Hilo and this place was part of it! I would be back. Owners are very nice. Mahalo for reading this. PS: I just got message from owner. The grapes were local. Thank you for letting me know. I see you really care, what ppl write! Sending ALOHA from Kona and we will be back!

Yelp
Only stayed one night but wish it had been longer. Such a fun place. We used to live in Hawaii and this was like coming home. Big room, great bed, large bath, very clean, all the amenities. Al, one of the owners was working next door so we got to meet him. He collects fresh eggs from the chickens next door and puts them in community kitchen for any of us to cook. Also brings in pastries, milk, whatever. Only 4 cabins and we share but we also have total privacy. Loved it there! Totally recommend for a wonderful experience. Close to everything in Hilo but on a quiet neighborhood lane with a jungle feel.

Yelp
Wonderful place in Hilo on the big island with a great location for exploring the East side of the island. It is walking distance to very nice beaches and the ice cream shop and about 5 min by car to downtown Hilo. The rooms are nice and very clean and there is a communal kitchen. The owners are super nice and helpful and provide fresh fruit and wonderful baked goods each morning. They made our 4 night stay there seem too short. I can't say enough good about the place. Stay there.

Tara M.

Yelp
It's not big or luxurious, but if you're looking for a simple and clean place to catch a good night's sleep and a place to shower that's inexpensive, this is it. At less than $100/night, this was the perfect place for my husband and I to stay while we explored the Hilo area. You do need a car to get to the downtown area, but it's only a couple miles away. It's on a nice, quiet residential dead end street with a path at the end of the street leading out to a quiet lava rock beach. There is a common kitchen. We didn't use it, but it seemed fine if you're looking to cook and eat in.

Yelp
This place is simply the best in Hilo! Clean and spacious rooms, romantic gardens, full-kitchen with lots of food and even free cold beers in the refrigerator! 1 minute walking from turtle beach. Seafood restaurant nearby. Innkeepers Alan and Penne are so nice that they will give orientation of the neighborhood and even make delicious chow fan (fried rice) and cut fresh coconut for your breakfast! We wish we could stay longer with them. We'll definitely choose this place again when we visit the Big Island in the future.

Yelp
We enjoyed our stay very much. Alan and Penne were so friendly, breakfasts were delicious, and the B&B is a 4 minute walk to a quiet beach! We would definitely stay here again!

Yelp
First of all, I like to be upfront and just say that this is a mixed review: as a first time guest to Hilo on the Big Island, I really enjoyed my stay at Aaron's Cottage, the hospitality was wonderful and it gave me a real experience of what "Aloha" means on this island, HONESTLY, you won't get a B and B host anywhere on Mainland who treats you like family, they have a way of welcoming you to the island experience that was just heavenly, this is true for most B and B hosts I have encountered on the Big Island. HOWEVER, honeymoons don't last, the hearts could feel very warm at first but later you might start to see and experience things about your host that were contrary to your initial experiences of who they are. If you are just sight seeing on this island most likely your experience will be light and pleasant: they provided fresh home-made breakfasts every morning, the rooms were tidy and clean, the dogs were friendly and adorable. Keep your experiences at this level everything will be superb. Do CHOOSE your B and B host with CAREFUL consideration, they can either make or break YOUR experience, so DO THE RESEARCH.

Yelp
Great place to stay! Nice and close to a few quiet family friendly beaches. Breakfast was fantastic (loved the fried rice!). Alan was super friendly and very helpful in providing information on fun things to do in the area.

Yelp
Loved my time at Aaron's cottage B & B! The hosts are warm and friendly, the rooms were clean and comfy, with nice beds, soft towels and AC and ceiling fans to keep the rooms wonderfully cool. The breakfast was delicious with lots of locally grown fresh tropical fruit and baked goods (Coconut muffins anyone?) and homegrown fresh eggs cooked just the way I like them! The kitchen was clean and well stocked and got me started right each day. I came to Hilo to drop my oldest child at the University and staying at Aaron's was the perfect match for this trip, giving me a bit of Aloha feel, with no stress or strain. The garden is lovely morning and evening, which is pretty much all I saw as my days were spent up at U of H which is about a 8 minute drive away. We did get to go to a beach near Aaron's for a bit of playtime in the ocean - there are several nearby one that has friendly sea turtles you can swim with! I didn't have any trouble finding the place with google maps and was even able to get there in the dark on the first night. I'm sure if my kid goes for all 4 years at U of H, we will be back and definitely stay at Aaron's Cottage every time!
