"Abadia is located in the old part of the city and founded in 1939. The name has origins in abbeys where pilgrims, who demanded a few hours rest, and a meal before starting another long religious walk toward Santiago de Compostela. It´s a old but it has great history and a good vibes." - Ana Bárbara & Armindo Araújo

Traditional Portuguese food and really good value for money. HUGE PORTIONS so you really don’t need to order many dishes. The final bill came to just about €20 and we were all so full. Loved every dish we had. The pork neck was so so tender and cooked in a delicious sauce. The grilled squid was also excellent- very fresh and cooked to perfection.

I had my best meal in Porto here. Wonderful atmosphere and service. The food tastes authentic and good. It’s a charming place to visit and have a great meal. There are 2 levels. I would suggest the top level for better visibility. We came for the tripe stew and it did not disappoint. The sea bream was also excellent. The service was fast and efficient. Staff were friendly and helpful. Bathroom was clean. Overall a great restaurant.

My friends and I had a good experience dining in Abadio. Jorge our server was very welcoming and professional. We enjoyed all of the dishes. All in good portions too.

Google
The Abadia do Porto restaurant offers traditional Portuguese dishes in a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere. I tried the famous Portuguese soup, **Caldo Verde**, but unfortunately, it didn’t leave much of an impression—the green ingredients seemed rather tasteless. For the main course, I ordered **beef with potatoes and sautéed vegetables**, and while the beef was a bit too rare for my taste, overall, it was good and flavorful. The potatoes and vegetables complemented the meal in a simple but enjoyable way. The service deserves recognition—the waiters were attentive and dedicated, doing their best to ensure my comfort. The warm atmosphere and friendly service added a nice touch to the experience. If you're curious to explore Portuguese cuisine and want an authentic experience, Abadia do Porto is a fitting choice.

This was our first meal upon arriving in Porto. Reached around 12pm and got a table immediately. The service was great and we did not wait long for our food to be served. We got the Tripas & Iberico pork neck for sharing, which came with some rice and veggies. Both dishes were amazing and felt homey. Portion size was on the larger end. The whiskey ice cream cake for dessert was great but not a must.

When in Porto, come here to eat authentic food that is really delicious and reasonably priced. In addition, the staff is very attentive and knowledgeable. While we were having dinner, there were a lot of people waiting in line, so the restaurant is very famous. I'm glad I didn't miss it and chose this place

Google
I would give it more than 5 starts if I could. Great service and huge places to adapt big groups. Staff was friendly and good suggestion on the wine selection. Food was amazing and big portion to share!

Google
Proper local restaurant serving traditional meals. Always busy so best if you book in advance. Sardines are a must to try, but we also went for the Portuguese kale soup - caldo verde. Everything was perfect, very helpful staff, we enjoyed our dinner here a lot.

Yelp
High quality service that sets it apart from restaurants in the area. Prices are reasonable for this caliber of service. I was with a group of four, so I tasted a few dishes. The steaks were terrific. The lamb dish, while providing a generous amount, was a bit dry. Serving sides are also generous.

Yelp
Very busy on a Monday night. A good sign. Our waiter didn't speak English so that was a challenge. Our first issue was that salads, entrees, and sides came at the sane time. Our entrees were starch heavy. We had sea bream, and the fish was fresh and properly cooked. Our other entree was goat. Tender, with a nice gravy. The salad had fresh ingredients, and one of the entrees had a side of baked cabbage. Overall a solid but not spectacular meal.

Yelp
The best meals (and service) I had on my trip to Lisbon/Porto. Traveling solo was challenging from a social perspective and I found most service in Lisbon restaurants to be cold/not welcoming. Abadia was such a breath of fresh air. The servers happily answered my questions, greeted me warmly, made recommendations, and were happy to see me when I returned for a second visit. The food was outstanding! One of the sheep cheeses on the cheese board was incredible! The veal was falling apart under my fork- so tender! The octopus salad was nothing short of fantastic. And the olive oil/onion/parsley mix was amazing! The Dorado was delicioso... just watch out for the bones. I only wish I had more time in Porto so that I could have come back for one more dinner!

Yelp
Excellent meal and outstanding service! Another Rick Steve's recommendation, buttressed by Yelp reviews. A large restaurant with several levels, we had no problem getting a table for lunch. Service was efficient and the staff attentive. The day's lunch menu is printed out and inserted in menu -- not sure if rest of menu is available, because we found the day's offerings pretty interesting. The menu recommended a white port wine to start, so how could I turn that down? I also went with kale soup (a first), which was highlighted by 2 slices of chorizo. Very good. My wife started with the Mediterranean Salad, which was a meal in itself. We followed those with fried sardines. They were not served hot from the fryer, but were tasty nonetheless. The roast pork was excellent, and the pork belly a close second. We ended the meal with sponge cake which was lite and not too sweet. Lastly, our server recommended an excellent bottle of vin verde, which I failed to capture in a photograph. Anyways, an excellent bottle at 23€. Meal with the bottle was 90€. Cheers! RS

Yelp
Popular Portuguese restaurant we found to be just ok. Not bad, but not as great as I would have hoped. 3.5 stars Food: 3.5 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3 Cost to worth it rating: 3 Opentableable: no but via email Return worthiness: maybe not Highlights: - Large menu in all languages - Many options for wine by bottle and half bottle and glasses - Pork tenderloin: was tender, 4 stars - Potatoes: small round potatoes slightly smashed with garlic were simple but good. 4 stars Midlights - Kale soup: was ok--simple broth and kale. Funny I thought the pieces of chorizo was a carrot slice so downed it in one bite. 3 stars - Seabream: was ok, full fish but with tons of bones so hard to eat. Wish they would have helped me debone it. 3 stars Lowlights: - Very crowded so need reservations - Seabass had a 40+ minute wait so didn't order that since we were just arriving that day from a long flight - Was hoping would be a more local spot but seemed more touristy - Service wasn't very friendly and came to drop off food and left Had high expectations but didn't have our best meal here.

Yelp
Abadia was one of the nearby dining suggestions from our hotel, and I'm glad we visited. It was a linen tablecloth, exquisitely professional dinner presentation that was both a meal and an experience. My wife elected to go with the local specialty - tripe stew with beans and meat. If something has a long history, regardless of how appealing it may sound from the name alone, there's a good chance that it will be really good if you are brave enough to give it a try. That was certainly the case with the tripe. We were both glad we got to taste it. I chose a delightful roast pork for my dinner, and was equally happy. Every table at Abadia had something interesting - a smaller table next to it, that the black aproned wait staff used as individualized serving stations. Large portions arrived at the table, and an ample amount of food was plated while we watched, and abundant amounts of additional servings sat waiting for us to get to them. Service was of the old school, professional kind, making our evening at Abadia an exceptional one.

Yelp
My family and I ate here after a recommendation from our tour guide Pedro. We were warmly greeted upon arrival and sat quickly at our table. Our server Guimarães was wonderful. He provided lovely wine recommendation and was super tolerant of our (bad) American jokes. We had several dishes at our table. The seafood rice was INCREDIBLE, the baked cod, salmon dinner and braised goat were equally as wonderful. The portions were large, 2 people could absolutely shared the seafood rice. Absolutely delicious Portuguese meal. We will eat here again.

Yelp
This place was exceptional, among the best dining experiences we enjoyed in Porto. The pork neck dish was remarkable... as was the grilled squid and the caldo verde.

Gunveer D.

Yelp
We ordered veal - medium rare and vegetable soup and shellfish soup and grilled chicken breast and white wine and rosé. I think everything was great. I would rate it 4.3/5. Servers are extremely nice and friendly. It has diner vibes but overall food exceeds expectations if you go by vibes.

Yelp
You would not discover this treasure just walking around as it's on a side street. What a great find! We had the whole fish, and it was truly the best fish I have ever had. The waiter deboned it perfectly tableside, and the two of us feasted on moist, wonderful fresh fish. Devine. Outstanding wines, that were, by American prices, a steal. It was a wonderul meal and I highly recommend stopping in.

Hyeon Ju S.

Yelp
The food was incredible, but the service was immaculate! Our server Rui was so kind and gave us excellent recommendations. He was accommodating and made us feel very welcome to the restaurant and Porto. Try the hake fillet with rice and beans and get the pão de ló ovar! You will have a fantastic experience :)

Amy Z.

Yelp
Tried tripe stew and pork with chestnuts, both are delicious. Will visit again. Service is good.

William H.

Yelp
Delicious food, nice atmosphere, old school professional waitstaff, fine wine. All combine for a wonderful evening.

Yelp
Octopus is fantastic! Some of the most tender octopus I have had ever eaten! Aside from the octopus dishes, the other dishes were good but has no wow factor. The decor of the place is olden style. The prices I felt were a bit higher because it is frequented by tourists like me. HOWEVER, I definitely am willing to come back and only order the amazing octopus and veggies as well as the octopus salad. The caldo verde is good but I feel like I can get it for cheaper elsewhere and it would taste the same. Monkfish was cooked well but the taste is not as memorable as the octopus. 3 stars just for the octopus and decent service. The price is higher than the local shops but still affordable compared to NY prices.

Yelp
This place was recommended to us by our taxi driver in Porto. He explained that once a year he has a family reunion in Porto and all 23 members of his family eat at Abadia together. Per his recommendation, we ordered the octopus, codfish and the prime rib. Firstly, a reservation is most likely not needed as the restaurant was huge and had many many tables. The service was great, our server helped steer us in the right direction with our order. While the restaurant is known for its codfish in olive oil, it was our least favorite out of our dishes. The octopus in olive oil and the prime rib were great and flavorful. The cheese assortment was also amazing- especially paired with bread and wine. The Portuguese portion rule stands true at this restaurant - the servings are largeee. They offer all dishes in a 2-person serving or a 1-person serving. We got all 1-person servings and even still, we could not finish our plates. Trust me - do not over order.

Yelp
The service was good, the food was delicious. I'd recommend you check your receipt closely, as I was charged for 2 additional dishes that I didn't order and didn't have. I wish I saw it before I paid. The reason I even looked is because the check semed higher than expected.

Yelp
Traditional Portuguese food in a 75 year old institution, served family style to locals, groups, and tourists by very friendly multi-lingual waiters. We went all/in: Bacalhau, roasted goat, caldo verde... A good experience but nothing gourmet here. Glad we visited but once is enough.

Gary L.

Yelp
I had the most wonderful dining experience on the evening of 5/06/2019. The smell of the food will greet you as you walk towards the restaurant. The service is great. Atmosphere was excellent. I had a dish with octopus - it was surprisingly good. I feasted on two dishes made from salted cod; I can hardly put into words the delight my taste buds experienced- of course marvelous marvelous. The dessert dish which reminds you of French toast was a crowning moment for an already great evening. Also, had some red wine, was pretty good. Great portion size and pretty reasonable prices. All in all, if you visit Porto you should dine at Restaurant Abadia. You will not be disappointed.

Damaris C.

Yelp
Busy restaurant and the food was good not great. Maybe for locals it's better since a local recommended it we decided to try it. The staff was friendly and overall we had a good time. The desserts were delicious.

Jason G.

Yelp
Wonderful Portuguese comfort food served up by friendly staff. They tend to be busy, but the location is so big that turnover happens reasonably quickly. This is a great choice for a nice family meal at a reasonable price.

Steve K.

Yelp
This was 1 of the best seafood restaurants I have ever been to. Aside form the excellent quality of the food, large portions and reasonable prices the manager let us use his cellphone for almost 2 hours while we were trying to get through to our airline to change our reservation at the onset of the Covid crisis in March of 2020. I would be happy to eat here every night if I were back in Porto.

Mike L.

Yelp
3.5 stars Another Porto institution. It's always busy & for good reason. They are serving up traditional Portuguese food from steak to chicken to sausage to bacalao. Their caldo verde was great. I had a steak that was served to me tableside on a sizzling platter. Great presentation & great steak. It also came with an assortment of Portuguese sausages which were delicious. One of which was the very traditional alheira which tastes great but unfortunately I'm not a fan of the texture... a bit too soft for me. Probably because of the bread that's also mixed into the sausage. My wife had the bacalao fritters/cakes & she was unimpressed. Texture was a bit soggy; you expect a bit of a crust on the outside of a fish or crab cake. And the flavor was lacking. At best, she said it tasted like average battered fish. While one dish was a bit disappointing, it was still on the short lists to return to because the rest of the food was great, service was top notch, and the prices were very very good.

Yelp
This place has been around since 1939. That in of itself should say something. The portions are huge, relatively speaking. It's good for families and large groups as it's quite boisterous in there. It's tucked away in an alley which could make it a little difficult to find. Give this place a try, you'll be pleased you did.

Fons J.

Yelp
Good service and the waiters helped us very much. The food was excellent quality for the price.

Ichiro T.

Yelp
Excellent restaurant with a variety of delicious food and wines. No worries they prepare the menu with several language. Everyone in the restaurant looks happy. Andre, our server, was friendly and knowledgeable. Take your time and enjoy wonderful meal!

Steve M.

Yelp
An experience so welcoming and tasty, we returned twice in a week. If you're drinking wine (and you should), ask for Pedro (the sommelier) to help you navigate the terrific list. Tough to go wrong here.

Phil K.

Yelp
Can't think of anything to complain about but plenty to praise. The waiter was friendly and helpful. The portions were huge and excellently prepared. The place was full but we never felt neglected.

Cassis S.

Yelp
This restaurant came highly recommended by a local. The portions are very generous, and the service was very good, but the taste of the food was just average.

Adam P.

Yelp
Highly overrated I think. We (myself, wife and 2 friends) were recommended here by our host and had high hopes. First impression on entering is that it's a very large restaurant, two levels with a central cavernous area. The vibe is bustling with waiters running to and fro. In some areas the tables are lined against rustic natural stone walls. In the hither regions where we were seated, the ceilings are low and the lighting harsh. The menu is very traditional Portuguese. We started with an assortment of breaded fried appetizers which were pretty tasty. For mains we had cod (bacalau), grilled octopus, and black pork with piri piri. The portions were large but the food all average at best. Pork far overcooked, chewy and tough (but did come with a good piri piri sauce). Cod was mostly potato topped with shredded cheese. Octopus was not bad, a large portion, but not as good as what I'd been eating at simple little hole-in-wall places in Lisbon. Overall impression of food is that which is being pumped out too fast by an overworked kitchen. Service friendly but hectic and distracted. Touristy touristy, riding on past rep.
