Canada's Coziest Getaway Includes Fireside Chess, Hard Cider with Monks, and the Best Grilled Cheese

"Saint Benedict Abbey is an architectural beauty that has been home to Benedictine monks since 1912. The monks hold a daily mass with Gregorian chanting and produce hard apple cider and cheese. The monastery offers silent retreats and requires reservations." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Are you ready for a heavenly cheese experience on the Eastern Townships Cheesemakers Circuit?! This is the place for you! Beautiful and tranquil surroundings, beautiful church and amazing cheese selection including old blue cheese - my personal favorite! 👍 Spend a few minutes in the church to give thanks for everything you have in life! Perhaps say a prayer 🙏 for others!

A peaceful and spiritual place. I loved the calm vibes here. The architecture is breathtaking, especially the multicolored brickwork. Don't forget to stop by the boutique for their famous cheese and cider before you leave!

We’d been curious about this place for years—our school always ran fundraisers with their cheeses—so we finally decided to visit. The Abbaye itself is beautiful. We took the tour, which was interesting, though I might skip it next time. That said, we did learn some neat facts, and our guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the Abbaye. You can tell the staff here truly care about what they do. We were especially excited to see the cheese factory, but due to high tourism (great for them!), access is now restricted as it disrupts the monks. It was a hot day, so we didn’t explore the outdoor grounds as much as we’d like, but it’s a charming place to visit. Picking up fresh cheese on-site—and at a good price—was a definite highlight. We’ll be back again one day 😊

Amazing experience! Very spiritual to sit in on a service, have picnic on the grounds. Pick apples in the fall. Their cheese is delicious. Highly recommend

A very nice quiet area in the nature. A very humble and yet beautiful monastery. In the basement floor there is a boutique where you can purchase delicious goods. Their variety of cheese was so tasty.

Enjoyed coming to this area for an unplanned visit. The shop inside offered many great options and was fantastic to take the time to have a picnic outside. The apple orchard added an extra activity for the visit. I wish there was more areas of the grounds that could be seen and more areas open inside to enjoy. Parking spots were a little bit of a challenge to get but many different areas available.

It’s a very beautiful place. The chapel is incredible. And the landing grounds are beautiful as well as the orchards and the roads to drive around there.

It’s a wonder of construction and you can feel the history of the abbey when you visit. Lots of displays about the history and daily activities and there’s also a wonderful little shop for souvenirs and cheeses and other snacks! It’s a bit of a drive from Montreal but worth the time!
