Essential Guide to Annecy, the 'Venice of the Alps'

"A thousand-year-old abbey repurposed as a hotel that blends history and hospitality—past guests include literary and artistic figures—and features corridor exhibitions along with an affordably refined restaurant serving locally inspired, bistronomique cuisine." - Lane Nieset Lane Nieset Lane Nieset is a travel writer from Miami who has lived in France for the past decade. L'Abbaye de Talloires (Annecy, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) 9 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Air doesn’t get much fresher than the stuff they’ve got breezing around at Abbaye de Talloires. The hotel, a converted Benedictine monastery from the days when the French monastic life was a scandalously plush one, is set at the edge of a pristine lake in the French Alps. That lake, specifically, is Lac d’Annecy, and it’s been drawing writers, artists, and savvy leisure-chasers for the better part of a couple centuries now, with the biggest names among them staying at Abbaye de Talloires. That may sound a bit snobbish, but when someone like Cézanne is compelled to visit a rural hotel known for its gardens and clear waters and vivid light, the endorsement nonetheless rings." - Tablet Hotels

L'Abbaye hotel in Talloires. France is a magical experience. The Abbaye is sparkling inside and out. We stayed in a suite which had all the amenities you'd want or need and a lovely view of picturesque Lake Annecy which is just yards from the hotels outdoor seating and bar area. Service there was wonderful and attentive. On our first night we ate at the Abbaye's outdoor garden area overlooking the lake. Service was perfect with delicious food, wine, cheese, starters and entrees. The service area and check-in reception was way above expectation and their help and guidance very much appreciated. We loved our stay at L'Abbaye de Talloires.

This is at least our tenth time of coming to the hotel so we must love it! We don't take breakfast, lunch or dinner at the hotel preferring to vary where we eat. However, we do a lot of sitting under the trees, chatting and having a drink which is truly wonderful. Since retirement we now take a classic room with a balcony overlooking the garden. The only fault is the water flow of the shower and bath are very poor. Not bad enough to stop coming though! We willl be back next year for sure.

All staff were extremely kind and helpful. The hotel generally was very clean. The rooms were smallish but presumably on account of the monks and historic houses building restrictions. We enjoyed the breakfasts with a range of fruit, a good range of cooked food, cheeses and a variety of hams and smoked salmon. What I did not enjoy was the coffee machine and missed fresh percolated coffee! We didn’t think the dinner menu was exceptional in quality considering the prices. This meant that apart from our first evening we decided not to eat in the hotel. Also it took a considerable time to be offered drinks which meant a long wait after being seated at our table. However we enjoyed our visit and would like to see the hotel in the winter season.

We absolutely loved our stay. the room was amazing, the view too. The location is great, the chaises longues and the deck amazing and everyone super nice. It was excellent and that's the rate I would give it. ||Until after we checked out, and asked to use the deck and to give us towels, we were told it was full, (it wasn't) and they gave us towels only for half of us to sit at the garden but not the deck.||It's such a shame that one employee, with this attitude, ruins a perfect stay and excellent service from everyone else.

Didn't stay at the hotel, but came here for evening drinks. They have quite a nice selection of drinks. I had the hibiscus spritz, and it was lovely! Very pleasant staff too and had a great view of the water.

My husband I had the pleasure of staying at the elegant Abbaye in the summer of 2018 during the Abbaye’s 1000th anniversary, and we finally had the opportunity to return this summer to share a holiday with our daughter and her family. The enchanting grounds of the Abbaye offer such a special place full of classic luxury to relax and unwind, and it’s where we have enjoyed making lifelong memories. ||We value the history and the luxurious sophistication of the relaxing lakefront atmosphere, offering a convenient walk into nearby Talloires. The Abbaye’s gracious staff are some of the best in the industry, and we appreciated many quality interactions with the Abbaye employees who are to be commended for their warm hospitality and professionalism. We truly appreciated the special attention we received from the proficient reception team before and during our stay: Mégane, Manon, Camille and Nathan, and at check-in from the friendly, engaging valet, Lucas; from our daily interactions with the magnificent Didier in dining service, to delicious drinks and boards served at the AT Bar by creative Aurélien and his staff, and to assistance from attentive Quinton for pontoon service; and much appreciation goes to the diligent housekeeping team, who carefully refreshed our chambre each morning and evening providing many amenities for our five night stay.||Many thanks to everyone on the Abbaye team for our memorable holiday in August 2025!! We’ll see you next summer!

Superb centuries old abbey nicely renovated. Very convenient and comfortable private access to the lake to relax and swim. Fine French food with emphasis on local products such as fish from the lake and sophisticated herbal and fumed touch. Very friendly and attentive staff.

Yelp
We had an amazing Michelin star meal at the hotel's Gastronomique. We selected the 109 euro menu and it was 11 courses. When the waiter kept bringing new silverware we thought he was kidding. My husband snd I travel a good bit and I'm confident to say this was one of the best meals we've ever had. Highly recommend drinks in the garden first.
