Characteristically clean, dry, crisp, tart, and effervescent, Abbey Creek has pioneered a distinct profile and approach to winemaking. My husband and I chose to come here after viewing the fall foliage at the Portland Japanese Gardens to celebrate our Saturday date day, free of our very animated five-month-old, and it has proven to be one of the best discoveries we have made since moving to the area. The atmosphere is relaxed, the staff are animated and enthusiastic, and everyone in the establishment bobbed their heads along to the hip hop tracks. It was incredibly refreshing to escape the often snobby atmosphere that accompanies wine tasting experiences and the resulting stiffness that you feel when you can't be natural. You can be as intellectual or as naive about wines as you want here - these folks will meet you wherever you are at.
We opted for the 5-track wine tasting which, much to our delight, came with a side of plantain chips - a nod to the founding family's Haitian heritage. I had spent several months living and working in Haiti from 2011 through 2012, and I have dearly missed the beauty of the country, the food, and its charismatic people - especially the plantains that debuted in every dish. So, finding out about their Haitian roots just made my day. We honestly loved all of the wines and could have bought bottles of each of them, which solidified our decision to buy a refillable bottle and return to purchase more! Next time, we will check out their new downtown PDX location and indulge in their food menu as well! Do check this place out - it is well worth it, and you will not be disappointed!
