First time visit. Great lil friendly hometown restaurant since 1963. I ordered the catfish platter. Really good and plenty of fish to take home. Loved the bread that was served. Great salad and fries as well. Great atmosphere and friendly customer service. I will return soon!

I used to always stop here in the late Seventies and early eighties on my way back to my oil rig, I was from Tennessee and they spoiled me on good Cajun food. The original owner, an elderly woman, was always so nice to me and treated me like her own. Great folks, great food!

We went to Abear's Cafe and enjoyed some live music on a Friday. Food and service were both good. Enjoyed the shrimp poboy, and my husband liked their fried oysters. Update: came back and tried the roast beef. It was pretty good too!

Google
awesome experience for some authentic cajun cuisine. a group of us showed up at 6pm on a Friday - they had live music and the place was busy. felt like we were eating in somebody's living room, lots of locals who clearly frequent the place. food was great, i had the chicken & sausage gumbo which was delicious. they have won the award for best local gumbo something like 7 years in a row. server was funny and helpful.

Google
Me, my husband, and a friend went there for the first time today. The people where wonderful. The food was amazing. I will highly recommend this to all my friends and family. Try to get there before the lunch rush. We got there right before and when we left it was getting filled up.

Google
This is a great little restaurant. All the food was good and the pie was definitely worth ordering even if you are full. I forgot to take pictures, but it was all good. I'd definitely go back of I'm in the area.

Google
If you're looking for authentic Cajun food then this is your spot. A little tucked away from the main road but an absolute diamond in the rock. If you're visiting homework or if you've lived in home with your whole life and never been to this restaurant then you need to go! Great food great service!

Google
A Cajun food heaven for Houma. The food is ranked #1 for what it serves, in many categories. Home style cooking, fried seafood, sandwiches, poboy, hamburger steak, potato salad, gumbo, stew, desert, all made in the kitchen from scratch. Sure it is not a 5 star type restaurant, but for it's type/style, it is 5 star. Soda and beer on real ice! Got to come here and just enjoy, especially when they have a band playing, 5 to 9 on some weekends. A must visit if you have friends visiting Houma.

Yelp
First time here for lunch today and I can see why they have been in business for over 60 years. The food was fantastic. Service was quick and friendly and the atmosphere was a very cozy country feel. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We all got different dishes but the special of the night was all you can eat catfish. The pies are amazing!!! Love the feel of the place!!! It's like we just arrived at grandma house and she wants to feed us!!! Love this place

Yelp
Very casual lunch dining. Everyone was so very nice. The kids were given coloring books and crayons to entertain them while we waited. A bread basket was brought out with a delicious loaf of soft white bread. I'm assuming it was made in house. It tasted very fresh. The gumbo is served with potato salad and was very good. I also tried the fried cauliflower and was not disappointed. I haven't had that in years. Grabbed a piece of coconut cream pie to go. Do not leave this establishment without having dessert. Wow. Sooooo good.

Yelp
My husband is from Houma, and we eat at A-Bear's every time we're in town. Love every lunch special we've had, generous portions and both the blackberry cobbler and the bread pudding are to die you! Delicious home cooking and very welcoming staff. Gets very crowded around Noon.

Yelp
Down home Louisiana cooking! Any place that starts you off with a basket of fresh french bread makes me happy. The shrimp was over flowing off the poorboy. The Bayou fries were amazing, best roast beef I've had, maybe ever. Great service and atmosphere. Worth the drive from Baton Rouge.

Yelp
Got a tip 3 hours away from here to go to a little place called "A-bear's Cafe" in Houma for the best gumbo. Didn't disappoint. A-bear's has set a new personal standard for how I judge gumbos and I enjoyed every spoonful. Tried boudin for the first time, no reference but very flavorful and reminded me very strongly of a Cajun analog to Lion's Mane Meatballs. On paper the rice-in-meatball idea has never appealed to me, but the end result of the soft rice mashed with gravy-infused pork sausage is immensely satisfying in a delicately fried shell. The pie was amazing. Nothing more to say. Place had an atmosphere that felt like Home and I'm pretty sure it is one. Loved every moment being there. Thank you for the memories.

Yelp
Nice little place for a lunch. I tried the Gumbo, a little bland. But the Country steak was amazing. Loaded potato and side salad. Lots of parking (free) get the pie before you leave. FOOD: SERVICE: VALUE:

Yelp
Good Home Cooked Meals Daily! Lovely little place to visit. Not far from Downtown Houma, Louisiana.

Yelp
I'm not sure why I never knew this place existed but I'm glad I know now. It really is hard to find good cajun food this far east but this place has it. We all had gumbo because it was the daily special along with shrimp & crab stew which I was tempted to try but I'm a gumbo snob so I had to find out. It is my new favorite gumbo in Houma. These people can cook! We also got the crabmeat stuffed fried jalapenos and they were awesome.

Yelp
Family owned and operated restaurant in a town that is close knit. This place was suggested to me by a coworker so I came to o Houma to see the sights and stop in here for lunch. I was not disappointed. Red beans and rice, side of potato salad. Peanut butter pie with chocolate for dessert. I was SO full. Lovely place. Stop in if your in the area. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Last day before flying back to California, my mama was cooked out. Also even tho I grew up here, we had all never eaten here. What a gem! From the cute old house, the adorable country interior, the incredible friendly welcome, we were happy to be there without even eating! Every person there treated us like they knew us. We got hush puppies comped from the kitchen. My dad had chicken fried steak and my mama and I had the catfish and white bean special. Perfectly cooked. Real deal...not overdoing extra crap in the beans and perfectly seasoned. The catfish was crispy and light. I also had to have lemon meringue pie and it tasted like my mawmaw's. I will not miss this place from now on!

Yelp
Great little hometown place. In an old house and family ran, this is a place for locals. Get in early so you don't miss the lunch special.

Yelp
Wonderful Mom and Pop restaurant. Great quality food and service. It was like going into someones home for lunch. Love it!

Yelp
Amazing Cajun!! Quaint, clean and tidy place. I was immediately greeted and seated by the very friendly (masked) staff. Since I was by myself, my waitress Rachel asked where I was from and was genuinely interested in what I had to say. They were out of Boudin, as it sells fast. I ordered the seafood platter which came with fried shrimp, stuffed fried shrimp, fried oysters, catfish fillets, cup of their award winning gumbo, side salad, and sweet potato fries. Food was above par and clearly made to order. I can see why their gumbo is award winning, if in doubt get it, you will want more than a cup though! All fried food was hand breaded and no food was previously frozen. In general portions are larger than expected. Prices were very fair and for the quality, I would say def worth every penny. Restrooms were clean and well stocked. Staff cleaned tables after patrons left and before new were seated. Packed half the meal in a to go box for later and paid with card on my way out. Thanks A-Bear staff for great food and a wonderful Cajun experience!!

Yelp
This place has been around forever, home cooked style foods, the large sweet tea is an icon and service is pretty decent. Prices have gone a bit to high for me to enjoy very often.
google avatar

Christie S.

Yelp
Great lunches. Home made deserts are the best in town! Get the bread puddin!!!!!! Quaint seating area. Convenient location. Down home hospitality.

Morris R.

Yelp
Stayed in Houma four days and being a foodie we ate the local cuisine (Cajun). This was the best meal we ate.
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
Really great Louisiana style cooking. Gumbos and rice dishes abound plus shrimp and crawfish. We had the red beans and rice with smoked sausage which was outstanding. The others at the table had a shrimp salad and fried catfish. All said they were excellent.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful personalities! Great service! Lots of smiles! The chicken and sausage gumbo is A+!

Ashley B.

Yelp
Service is horrible. The one who just stands around glaring is unsettling, will not be back.

Yelp
Great Louisiana cookin'! I would have not found this place had I not been treated to lunch by a few locals. This place is smack dab in the middle of nowhere and the outside doesn't look like a place I would normally choose for lunch. I ordered the sausage and chicken gumbo...and oh man... it was awesome. Normally, the gumbo I get is mostly liquid, but this one is filled with sausage and chicken. Each time I pick up my spoon there is a pile of meat on it. They didn't skimp out! The only slight downside is that it wasn't spicy. Some people like it spicy but it was still good to me. I also heard that their desserts were good but I didn't have any. Maybe I'll come back here next time for some.

Blank R.

Yelp
The chicken and sausage gumbo is to die for!!! Also crab cakes are delicious. The ladies who run this place are all lovely. God bless them all ! Great place, great people.

Yelp
Catfish with the crab sauce, red beans and rice with a salad and cup of gumbo. Delicious! Local feel with a lively waitress staff. Loved it and will be back.

Yelp
A-Bear is that wonderful diamond that you stumble upon and you realize you are in a little slice of heaven. The service is impeccable! We were greeted by Rachael as soon as we walked in. She sat us at a very nice table in the front. Our drinks and food order was taken promptly. Since it was Friday they offer all you can eat catfish! Now, there is this very cool duo playing Zydeco music. The music was hopping, the food kept coming and we had a great time. Since we were stuffed we ordered our desserts to go! All their desserts are made fresh! They offered the following: Bread Pudding with rum sauce Blackberry cobbler Peanut butter pie (oh my) Chocolate Peanut butter pie Coconut cream pie We ordered the bread pudding and coconut cream pie. Our overall experience was very positive and we loved that slice of heaven!

Yelp
A great find on a Friday evening. Music along with chicken and sausage gumbo and a side of potato salad really hit the spot. Downed it all with a swimming pool sized sweet tea. Some of the best food I've had in a long time.

Thiago L.

Yelp
Amazing! Chicken and sausage gumbo was great! Service awesome and I was the 50th client and won a whole pie!!! Peanut butter pie!!!
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I were looking to enjoy some authentic Cajun cuisine before heading out on a swamp boat tour and I can't imagine a place that would fit the bill better than A-Bear's. Whenever I walk into a small restaurant that's built in an old house and I see a bunch of locals enjoying their lunch and chatting it up with the staff, I feel like I'm on the right track. And such was the case with this quaint little spot. I ordered the Catfish A-Bear special (four fried filets topped with a savory butter-crab sauce). Despite how it sounds, the meal wasn't overly heavy. I don't eat fried catfish often, and this definitely met the high expectations I had for ordering it in south Louisiana. My wife had the chicken and sausage gumbo which was also quite good. The catfish special came with two sides, the first one being red beans and rice (which were unfortunately a little bland). The second side (potato salad) reminded us a little of mashed potatoes and was surprisingly delicious. And at $8.95 it made for a fairly good lunch deal. Arguably our favorite part of the A-Bear's experience was the Cajun country atmosphere and friendly service. Just to give you an example of the atmosphere... they had a sign on the wall that said the 52nd customer of the day would receive a free dessert (it appears that the number changes each day). Lo and behold, it was my wife's lucky day, so our waitress gave us the good news and my wife enjoyed a piece of chocolate peanut butter pie on the house (which she told me was rich, creamy, and delicious). All in all, I would highly recommend A-Bear's for anyone who's looking to sample some local Cajun flavor in Houma.

Yelp
i grew up going to a bears on friday nights and this was my first time going back in years!!! i got a fried catfish platter with stuffed jalapeño poppers and it was very good. the food came out quick and you could tell it was fresh. the staff and owner came by many times and treats you like family. we also got the peanut butter chocolate pie and oh my god it was the best pie i've ever had. it was perfect. the perfect amount of peanut butter taste with a hard coat of chocolate on top. i'm glad i was able to visit before moving out of state. the staff wore masks and they had sanitizer for customers as well.
google avatar

Levi M.

Yelp
Excellent bread pudding! Would go here again just for that. Friendly service too. Good Cajun food as well. Love their shrimp gumbo.
google avatar

Amanda K.

Yelp
This is a great find. It feels like being over at someone's home for lunch or dinner. The staff is friendly and attentive and treats everyone like they're a regular. I had the gumbo which was delicious. Possibly the best part is dessert so don't skip out on that! I'm told the desserts are made by a local woman who drops off pies she made that morning. I had the peanut butter pie and it was so good! If you're lucky enough to be near this place, go!
google avatar

Becky G.

Yelp
It's nice to have a few locally owned restaurants in town. But the menu here has alot of overpriced dishes. I've eaten here about 10 times over the years & each time I'm hoping something has changed. At least half of these times, I've had to send my food back because it wasn't hot. The last time we went, the waiter was kind of a smart ass & that doesn't fly with me. The food, when hot, is ok. There isn't anything that sets them apart, in my opinion, other than they are local. I will say the coconut pie is pretty good.
google avatar

Rico C.

Yelp
Maybe Rico favorite food on the planet. Many time I go here. Catfish a-bear and shrimp pirogue are what I want to die for (alway see yelp people write that. jaja.) I bring city girl there for friday music night with cajun band. One big family in back cook everything.
google avatar

Patapsco M.

Yelp
Ate lunch here on my first day in Houma and liked it so much I ate lunch here the other two days in town also. Everything was good. Gumbo, po boys, fried catfish, red beans and rice, white beans and rice- all great. Three meals and not one bad item of food. Tastes like the kind of food my Cajun Grandma would make if I had one, and it was obvious that it was a place where locals went to eat. Even the sweet tea was awesome. Can't say enough good things about it, go here if you can.
google avatar

Nell C.

Yelp
Went for lunch with a local resident. I would never have found this place because it is off the beaten path. The building does not resemble a typical restaurant. It appears to be a house that was converted into a restaurant. They offer daily specials but I decided to try the Chicken & Sausage Gumbo which came with Potato Salad and fresh bread. I have never had a "real" gumbo prior to today. Each spoonful was loaded with meat. The broth was flavorful but I decided to add a little hot sauce to spice it up. I really enjoyed the potato salad and bread too! My lunch mates savored the bread pudding for dessert. Give this place a try. It will be worth your while!

Alexis C.

Yelp
The chicken and sausage gumbo and potato salad were great! We also loved the coconut cream pie and peanut butter pie. It's also such a cute place with a lot of character!
google avatar

Kyle W.

Yelp
I have a major problem with this place...they made me fat. The food is just so dang good. The catfish is amazing...I love the Poboys, and the bread pudding...whew!
google avatar

Mark E.

Yelp
Great La home cooking kind of place. Plate lunch was huge and more than filled the belly. Food had very good flavor. I wish I would have had room for the fresh daily desserts they had on hand. All in all I will visit again when in town. Until then you need to make it a place to try for yourself.
google avatar

Duncan B.

Yelp
Homerun Houma, LA Catfish is a Must, Order of the "specials" Board It is all Great

Bobby B.

Yelp
The food is very average and the specials seem to be precooked. The desserts are fantastic. The service is not very polite.
google avatar

Armond B.

Yelp
The food here, on its best day, is pretty average at best. I've been here quite a few times. However, this was always with vendors. I would never pay my own money to eat here, simply because there are much better places to eat. In fact, Mike's BBQ, which is about a minute down the street from this place, is much, much better. I will say the peach cobbler a la mode was actually pretty darn good. Other than that, though, the food is extremely bland. To be honest, some of it taste as if came straight out of the can.

Janis E.

Yelp
Country atmosphere but a staff who seemed ready to close for the day. The portions were generous but the "award-winning" gumbo was lukewarm and bland and served with too much rice and in a an overflowing bowl. The home made coconut cream pie had a strange tang not sure if it was the sugar or vanilla.
google avatar

Titus T.

Yelp
Very good place to eat if you want authentic Cajun food! I got the lunch plate special, red beans & rice, it was great! I was enjoyed how friendly the servers and owner was. It was like eating at home. Amazing peanut butter home made pie!!
google avatar

Anne R.

Yelp
The food is very bland, very disappointing. The sweet potato fries were the only thing that was tasty. The potato salad tasted like Crisco and potatoes, with no seasoning, and the shrimp etouffee and red beans and rice were quite bland. I've had better cajun food in Houston! I've fun thing, they do offer free dessert each day, but I was not a fan of the food.
google avatar

Shanna H.

Yelp
We love this place! The charm alone was the best. Go on Friday nights when they have a band! Great experience for these transplanted Indiana Hoosiers !! Loved it
google avatar

Jeremy C.

Yelp
Catfish abear, red beans and rice, and bread pudding w rum sauce--awesome! Band was great too!
google avatar

Tim O.

Yelp
Good Cajun style restaurant, food is mediocre at best if you are from here! If you are from out of town it's ok place to get some ok Cajun food.
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
Nothing fancy, just good old southern cajun cooking. Try the gumbo.
google avatar

Erik Z.

Yelp
I have not been to A-Bear's in years but I can't forget their peanut butter pie!
