"Downtown is split in half by the Des Moines River. On the west side, you’ll find Surety and Hotel Fort Des Moines, and the 109-room AC awaits on the east. This Marriott property is situated in the center of the ultra-walkable East Village. It’s also a half-mile away from the glimmering Iowa State Capitol dome. (If you have time, by the way, pop in for a free tour of the majestic government building.) AC Hotel’s decor, from top to bottom, feels European and sleek. I spent two night during a business trip and our customers make the reservation for us here. The hotel is located in downtown, with a very nice and big lobby, the interiors are very well-kept, furnished with style. At the check-in I had a problem with the reservation, but the receptionist found immediately the solution. The room was, super clean, very big, the bathroom too, with a nice view on the Capitol. The two best points of the hotel are a super comfortable bed and a very silent room. One topic to improve is about the breakfast, because was only sufficient, few things to eat and to drink, with very low quality. I can’t say nothing about price, because I was guest of my customer.

Rooms were clean and comfortable. The bathroom door does not keep the light out at night, if you can even figure out how to turn the light on in the first place. Location was great, we parked in a city lot (a block away) for $10 rather than the hotel parking for $30. For $14 / person you get a basic continental breakfast. The free breakfast at the Holiday Inn is far better. For $250 a night it was not worth the price.

I don't have any reasons not to stay here, but also nothing to say that blew me away either. A bit pricey for what you get, but it is a very clean and nice place. Service was very good, staff is very helpful. 3.8 stars if I could.

The room was very good, spacious clean and with all required amenities. Cable options were great, staff were friendly and the best was their 5 mile radius shuttle support, Mr Tim was great guide while dropping us off. This kind of service is uncommon in usa, more available in Asian cities. Breakfast options can be better, a bit monotonic for those who have to stay for more than 2 nights

Peyton was easy to work with arranging rooms for wedding guests. The Jr Suite we used for the bride was perfect. The only issue were the had was the shuttle. We were told he would be available until 11:00-11:30 after reception. He left at 8:00ish. Heels on icey sidewalks, not good. Thankfully no falls or injuries. The other issue was the bar closed two hours earlier than posted on the website.

Clean hotel, with friendly staff. Modern amenities. AC brand of Marriotts has never disappointed, especially given the very reasonable rates. Easy walking distance to many diners and bars. Safe area. The rooftop bar and grill had an amazing view of the incoming storm, highly suggest if you enjoy watching lightning shows.

Google
The best hotel in the DM area. Peyton went out of his way to make our stay the best it could be! Rooms are always clean and stocked and ready for us when we arrive. The rooftop bar is incredible with great views, yummy drinks and friendly staff—Bonita and Trent were both super nice and conversational. I love staying here!! Oh and the showers are heavenly!

I recently stayed at this hotel and rarely write reviews but feel it worth my time to give back for a great stay. My time there was for business travel as the company I work for had a meeting there. I’m the meeting planner and interact with hotel staff at different hotels each year. The hotel was clean and felt upscale from the moment walking in. The room I stayed in was spacious compared to other hotels I’ve stayed in, the bed was comfortable, and I loved the LVP flooring rather than carpet. One of the meeting spaces was utilized for a board meeting and that was very spacious. Even though we didn’t use the AV equipment, it was available if needed without an additional charge. Coffee was in the meeting space without an additional charge. Coffee is also provided in the lobby area for guests complimentary. The staff were amazing and attentive. We had a private event in one of the rooms at The Republic on Grand (6th floor of hotel) and the food there was superb. That space is a wonderful addition to the hotel when planning a function with a meal or not. They also provide a shuttle for guests, and we were able to utilize that to help transport attendees to places close by. When leaving on the final day, I thought back of any negative thing I felt while there and couldn’t think of a thing. All comments from the attendees were positive as well. If ever in the area again, this will be my place to stay.

Yelp
Very interesting hotel. It's nice i guess, and the people working there were all mostly nice. The man at the front desk was annoyed with me checking in when I had key access through the app.. other than him, everyone was mostly helpful I checked out of the hotel after one night because this hotel is form over function Meaning, you look good, but it's mostly a non functioning hotel. For example, the bar is on the top floor, and it's nicely decorated, but the have no windows that close the full way, so they are open all the time even though it was 29 degrees out. Unbelievable. They give you personal heaters but they don't even work more than 10 minutes at a time. I'm sure for a few months a year, it's really nice up there... The hotel rooms are mostly nice, again form over function They are freezing because carpets or area rugs would be unsexy I guess. It's super loud area of town that's just an fyi as it's not a hotel problem. Worse, they had a breakfast buffet Like most hotels, but unlike it being included like all the other hotels, it's $14 plus tax and tip, and not worth $4. Not even close to being worth the price. The person standing around the breakfast buffet there does nothing, but expects to get a tip for bringing your bill. Thus upset me the most I immediately checked out and went to the Marriott.

Yelp
Great location! Walking distance to a lot of restaurants, bars and shops. Spacious, modern rooms. The bed was very comfortable. Quiet at night - we didn't hear our neighbors and heard no noise above or below us. We would definitely stay here again. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the parking situation. They have secure underground parking which I paid $18 for. We left around 10pm to go get a few things at the store. We were gone maybe 20 mins. When we got back there were no parking spots left, so even though I paid $18 for parking, I had to park my car on the street overnight.

Yelp
Extraordinary design and beauty from the lobby to the rooms. The customer service from the moment we walked in was exquisite. Connor made sure everything was perfect for our stay and even had some lovely suggestions for the area. Thank you for a memorable stay.

Yelp
This is a nice hotel. It's not perfect, but it's modern & clean and the staff is incredibly friendly. We were here for the USA Gymnastics Nationals & it's very close to the convention center if that's your destination. What's good: FREE COVERED PARKING. Yes, you read that right. Location. Right in the middle of town, close to everything. Price. We paid under $200 a night. It's not CHEAP, but not bad for a Marriott brand in a nice city that offers most amenities. Granted, our view was terrible, but I wasn't in Des Moines for the view. That said, it's actually a pretty city, so I wouldn't have minded a view. The decor is really pretty. I love the clean, modern aesthetic. Beds are comfortable, and the showers are nice if you like rain showers. Not a bad restaurant at the Republic. It's mostly bar food, but they had a good Greek salad that was tasty and healthy as well as many other yummy-sounding things. Friendly people. I like that in people. What they need to work on: The Mobile App. The mobile app is really cool. You can request a mobile key and more towels, pillows, etc. the problem is that the staff don't seem to have adapted to the mobile app. I didn't get my mobile key until the next day, and when I got it, it didn't work. Also, I requested extra pillows on the app & they never arrived. If you call the front desk for anything, though, they're there in a hot second with whatever you need. Lighting in the bathroom. There is a lot of light, but the light in the bathroom is terrible for anyone, like ME, who likes to do her makeup in the bathroom. It just doesn't work. I'd definitely stay here again if I ended up in Des Moines again.

Jill C.

Yelp
The hotel itself is nice and in a great location. the bathroom though...definitely not a comfortable set up. the lights are ridiculously blinding, and the sliding door doesn't allow for privacy even though it is "frosted". The design is nice but not practical at all. Parking is covered with a 8ft clearance. With parking, this cost us about $200 for one night.

Yelp
Great hotel and staff! Rooms are comfortable, modern and clean. Republic is a rooftop bar with a great view, great drinks and food- a must when visiting Des Moines!

Caprice F.

Yelp
The AC is a super sleek and ultra modern hotel downtown! The staff here is very friendly and accomodating. The toilet is flat and square-shaped so you've been warned about that. It works just fine but it may throw you off the first time you see it. The shower is very nice with two different shower heads. The underground, heated garage is a very nice perk on a cold day especially. The breakfast here is interesting and more like a European buffet. It's not included but costs around $14 which isn't too bad. You won't find any bacon here folks, so don't be alarmed when you don't see it. However, there is prosciutto. The Republic on the roof is definitely a cool spot for a drink, and yes it is heated. The rooms here are not cheap, but this is a really nice hotel to experience, even for a staycation!

Yelp
Great hotel and best manager ever ! Dontrez helped us with our initial reservation and then was there at check in. Set up our rooms side by side because we had a large party. Helped us with local attractions and recommendations. Would recommend. Thanks DSM!

erik a.

Yelp
It's fine. Nice modern rooms but it's located off a street that sounds like it's the set of American Graffiti after 8pm. Breakfast is crazy overpriced. Rooftop bar is nice but closes early.

Julie G.

Yelp
Food is great. Staff is great. But the strangest thing in the world for hotels. You have to leave all the lights on at full wattage to watch TV, or keep yourbed light on or anything. The only way to turn the lights off is to actually get out of bed and turn off the front door lights. There is no other way. So what is the point of having a bed stand light? Makes zero sense. The front desk confirmed all rooms are like this. Btw, DONT turn off that main switch for full wattage in the room or the TV will go off and it takes about 15-20 minutes to reboot. Again, confirmed by front desk that I'm not crazy. Anyway, just kind of terrible planning.

Erick E.

Yelp
If you are staying here don't get room 403, Ac makes a terrible nocking noise when it comes on throughout the night. Maintenance came over to fix it but nothing changed. Just an FYI

Patrick T.

Yelp
Ok so I have never stayed here, but I have been to the Republic multiple times and love the view, drinks, and service! Even went 5 minutes before close and they were super kind and made my pals fancy pants drinks! Recently I got to work with Nick on an event... Nick helps manage the bar/hotel/event spaces and he was such a joy to work with! Always going out of his way to help, and solving any problem with a smile! You can't beat that kind of service! I would definitely do another event in the hotel lobby. The staff was fantastic and helpful, the bartender was fun and knowledgeable! And the space is just absolutely beautiful! This place is a win win win!

Denise K.

Yelp
had a wonderful two night stay. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. We stayed for a wedding and the house keeping staff had the rooms ready early so that we could get ready to attend a 2:00 wedding, which was very much appreciated. Will definitely stay here again.

Lyle D.

Yelp
The Republic on the 6th floor is one of the spots in Des Moines that makes it feel like a new city. The restaurant is open air with a solid roof. Even in winter it's warm and comfortable. Great small plates and specialty cocktails. I recommend the smoked whiskey, actually smokes, and the charcuterie plate

Angelika K.

Yelp
My husband and I were planning a little four day weekend getaway, however the first real snowfall of the season prevented that. I decided it would be fun to check into the East village Marriott for a mini staycation instead. When we arrived, we were greeted by a very friendly and helpful front desk clerk who made us feel welcome! Our room had an amazing view of downtown Des Moines (corner king). After we put our stuff away, we headed up to Republic on Grand (hotel's awesome rooftop bar/restaurant). I had my usual (Grandview cocktail and hummus board). The room was clean and comfortable and our bathroom had some extras in the toiletry department. We were able to sign into our Netflix account through the tv and had fun watching our favorite shows while enjoying snacks from the 24 hour sundries store. We had an excellent staycation and will try and make this a regular thing!

Yelp
After reading an interesting mix of early reviews and now having been a guest at the AC, I felt compelled to offer our thoughts on our experience. For any frequent travelers familiar with Marriott's various properties, this is the quintessential AC Hotel located in the vibrant East Village of downtown Des Moines. A big plus for us as conveniently close to some of the best of what the city has to offer. And if it isn't close - the best kept secret is shuttle van Tim T who will take you where you want to go. The AC is now our main stay when we return to Iowa.

Cory S.

Yelp
This place is deceptive... its clean, modern, new and overall a solid choice in a great location. It should be a slam dunk for a 5 star rating, no problem right? The service and couple quirks just keep me from getting up to a 5 star review, plus I'm stingy. The check in is always a nightmare, even with a mobile check in so they know when to expect you. Sometimes the rooms are not ready despite a normal check in time. Other times, there are 2 people in line and it takes 10 minutes for them to get get checked in by the 1 person who is running the desk (gotta keep those profit margins high, right?). Other times, it takes theme 15 minutes (not joking) for them to figure out if they have a room ready for you. The service at the restaurants and bars is spotty... but the rooftop bar is awesome overall. It draws a ton of people who aren't staying at the hotel. Checking out, parked a car in... but done have your room key. Head to the front desk and waste time waiting for a staff member to let you into the elevator and click the garage level because the only levels you can get to without a room key are the rooftop bar level and lobby. Annoying, but i understand why. The room floors are loud most of the time.. noise travels easily in the hallway, no idea why. Despite the above quirks.. it really is a good 4 star place, just needs some assistance in a couple areas.

Yelp
AC Hotels started popping up around the mid/west a little over a year ago... we have one now in Denver and I've now stayed at the Des Moines location. Updated lobby and rooms with a nice, clean, Marriott-esque feel. There's a hotel restaurant on the 7th or 8th floor, which I didn't get to check out, but again it feels like an upscale-ish experience which one would expect from a new Marriott property. Thank you for the cable TV in the rooms. I didn't get to watch my regular Bravo shows at night, but I did catch part of a movie in the morning while catching up on emails in-bed. Toiletries also smelled especially good, I kept the lotion in my bag. My only complaint was that I when showed up in REALLY early the day of my reservation, no one offered to check my bag at the front desk. So I had to lug around my duffel for the rest of the morning/afternoon around town. That's the first time a hotel has never offered to take my stuff and hold on to it if I couldn't keep in the room. Odd, but it's OK, I had a very small bag and was able to keep it on my person. Total with tax was $153 per night. A pretty good deal for a nice hotel in DSM.

Bradley R.

Yelp
Somehow this hotel hasn't figured out how to clean rooms or blankets. The mild on our blankets haven't been discovered by housekeeping over the past 4 days because they haven't been in our room more than once. We finally brought it up but we're told housekeeping has left and no one knows how to get replacement blankets.

Jenny R.

Yelp
Very pretty lobby, the rooms were clean, the hotel shop supplies food and drinks, and some little items. I needed earplugs because they played loud music and I couldn't sleep, also a bunch of rowdy drunks outside my room. Should've been signs saying please be considerate, people are trying to rest. (Something like that possibly?).. I noticed that they go to great lengths to make the place look fancy, however they have the same exact bed frames that motel 6 does... they put wheels on almost all of the furniture which I think is hilarious. The breakfast isn't included in room price and costs another 13.95... there isn't any room service... and the cleaning people kept making me sign there papers to say they asked me if they could clean. Also the elevator requires your room key in order to go to floors other than lobby and 6...

Jeff T.

Yelp
Updating the review. The hotel did step up and give us free night another weekend. We took the time to enjoy the bar before seeing a show and had fun drinks, but the real fun was the small wine bar downstairs- low key, friendly bartender and a good place to just unwind. All that said, when I checked in I gave them a card to use for incidentals and they ended up putting all charges on the card loaded into my app profile. They worked hard to redeem their first experience, but still have a number of kinks to work out.

David M.

Yelp
This was a discovery for me. What a great affordable hotel in Des Moines, with on-site parking, and within walking distance to everything I wanted to do. The rooms are great too.

Robert V.

Yelp
Very nice hotel with very good amenities. Really enjoyed the breakfast buffet and the area.

Jeremy W.

Yelp
Fresh. Inviting. Modern. This hotel brings a caliber not seen before in the Des Moines Hotel market. This boutique hotel is perfect for a weekend trip or business travel. I stayed one night in October and found the staff warm and welcoming (even at midnight), the European breakfast fare excellent, and the location top notch for bars, restaurants and shopping. West elm is just down the street. Beautiful shops less than a block away. Pros: location, great rooms, amazing rain shower, good breakfast Cons: it's very modern which sometimes feels a bit "sterile"

Willow D.

Yelp
When in town for a hair competition that my salon is competing in, we arrived to our venue to find that NONE of the supplies that we needed were available. We called our hotel to see if there was anything that they could do to help, and Nick promptly reserved a gorgeous, well lit space for all 20 of us to set up and prep in less than 30 minutes. This staff has been so accommodating and has gone above and beyond customer service standards. The space is absolutely beautiful, and I fully recommend giving this hotel your business. Thank you, Nick, for saving the day!

Eric B.

Yelp
Nice hotel. Was there for a 2 day conference. Staff was nice and attentive. Facilities were well maintained and clean..I did not have a room to rate..food served was decent. Chicken was awesome. Brisket was tough and hardly any smoked flavor. Not a cut with a fork tender..if you need a knife the brisket isnt done. Drinks for breaks were cold and a good selection. Conference room was nice and clean but wasn't large enough for our event. Not the hotel's fault though..

Megan E.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this hotel! I'll start with the most important, the staff! I've worked with Nick A. a few times now for events in the hotel, and he is the absolute best. We've often partnered with charities for these events, and he goes above and beyond to help us make it an incredible success. From the smallest details to the overall facilitation of the events, we could not do it without him, and he is a true delight to work with. He's also so great with the rest of the staff there (and customers who I've seen him interact with many times during our walkthroughs), and you can tell they have good leadership from him because they are awesome, too! As for the hotel, it's so great, too! The rooms are so nice, super modern and they work to keep it as environmentally-friendly as possible! The Republic is such a welcome restaurant in Des Moines. The patio is so lovely and great drinks! I will definitely continue to work with this hotel and Nick. The staff is fantastic and helpful, and the space is absolutely gorgeous!

Ari S.

Yelp
I was disappointed with the hotels lack of service. They have a beautiful bar but no bartender? Do not stay on the 5 th floor.... The 6 th floor is the rooftop bar (which closes at 11:30) and for some reason they start moving the tables around a few hrs later to clean....so you are awake listening to chairs and tables being moved . Be prepare to haul your luggage to your room ... no bellman.

Douglas W.

Yelp
A beautiful designed modern contemporary hotel. The entire property had that well finished and upscale feel of all Marriott properties. I think however that the pricing structure is 20% too high for DSM and the corner premium room we stayed in this time around was on the small side. In a large city this would be fine but not in our small town and for this price. Good but not great.

Scott A.

Yelp
Have stayed at the AC several days over the last month. While day staff has been more then amazing the over night staff is more then unacceptable but incapable of providing any customer service. This is after a horrible experience at the Savory (as sister company).

Olivia H.

Yelp
Check in and check out was a breeze. The staff in the evening and the following morning was very courteous and polite. Our room was very clean and modern. We really enjoyed our stay. The hotel was quiet even though there seemed to be some sort of event happening that evening downstairs. Not the best place to stay with a baby or children because of space and lack of in-room microwave, but would definitely go back with my husband for a weekend away.

Carter A.

Yelp
This is a noisy over priced hotel. I have stayed in Marriott hotels around the world and this was a huge let down. Rooms are very loud and housekeeping didn't replace bath gel after my first night so I had to use hand soap from the sink. Whatever happened to midwestern hospitality? Staff is cold and impersonal. Stay here on a client recommendation, don't make my mistake. Too many better places.

Kate A.

Yelp
listen... this hotel is super nice with comfy beds and all of the good hotel things INSIDE the room, but the parking is abysmal. the location of the hotel makes it so there are a few spots behind the hotel (which a bunch of people NOT staying at the hotel seem to park in) and a larger parking garage beneath the hotel. usually, ALL of these spots are filled. nearly every time i have stayed here in the last year i have had to park on the street, which i suppose is fine, but you would expect more from a hotel that markets themselves so luxuriously. additionally, the location is an issue because it is surrounded by bars. there's also a bar on the sixth floor, which leads to many loud and rowdy guests stumbling around. this is arguably not the fault of the hotel but still could be prevented at least slightly. overall, a nice hotel with nice staff but the convenient location becomes less and less convenient as your stay goes on
