I am a loyal regular customer of this Gretna Academy store since last 20 years. They hired a new unprofessional Manager TERRY. For Who I complained last week to corporate office. That day A different man was using his name tag as manager. Today there was a different man with name tag TERRY.He approached me telling oh you are the one who complaint to corporate office, In retaliation today ,This man called police on me for tresspassing. Wonder who hire this unprofessional?? I was continuously harrassed by Terry and another unprofessional employee Christina. I give them less than Zero. Would not recommend anyone to deal with such unprofessional employees of Gretna Academy store.

Based on my recommendation, I was expecting a bit better overall. It does have a good selection but again, doesn't really compare to a Bass Pro or Cabela's.

On February 4, 2025, at 6:30 PM, I placed a curbside pickup order and received an email notifying me that my items were ready for pickup. I had already paid for my order online. After waiting in my car for over 20 minutes, I decided to go inside with my newborn to find out what was causing the delay. Upon entering the building, the employee informed me that she had been waiting for me to walk in. She then told me that my order had been canceled and that I needed to repay for the items. I was shocked to learn that she had allowed me to wait outside for so long without informing me of the cancellation. This was the worst customer service experience I have ever had, and the employee was extremely rude. It seemed she canceled my order simply because she didn’t want to come outside.

Best Academy I’ve ever seen. Super nice and helpful employees, great inventory compared to my local store in Montgomery.

All the items in my cart did not have barcodes. Made to unpack boxes of skeets several times. Drive over an hour to get them and leave with nothing. Terrible service

Yelp
My fellow Veterans, Academy Sports + Outdoors no longer accepts a Military ID, VA ID, or your drivers license with the veteran designation as proof of military service for their military discount. You have to register through Academy with "ID Me" to obtain a discount. I have an ID Me account that I had to ser up through the VA, but that account does not work at Academy for some reason. When I tried to register through the QR code displayed at the register, the website told me that they could not verify me and that I did not have an account. The cashier here just told me that allot of veterans are not getting their discount because of this, but it is now Academy's policy to verify through the website. They just lost my business.

Yelp
Very poor service in the hand gun section. Stood in line for over 1 hour while the manager just stood there and watched. He didn't even make eye contact with anyone. If he did, he might have to work !

Yelp
I went to the Academy Store in Gretna, LA on Sunday September 3, 2023. My receipt is time stamped 3:45. The cashier name is not on the receipt. If my memory serves me correctly I was at cashier number three. I went to check out. As I approached the cashier. She was laughing with her colleague next to her. Once I got to the counter I gave her a minute to gather herself. She scanned my item but continued to laugh. I had to ask her to please finish checking me out and i had to ask her what is my total. She said the total but I did not hear her since I am hard of hearing. I have a hearing disability. Therefore I had to ask her again. She became irate that I asked her again and said I told you it was 21.83. I gave her my money and told her she did not have to be rude and ugly to me. She put the money on the counter and stormed off. Another person had to finish the sale. I am completely disturb that the cashier went off on me. I was polite and tried to give her a minute to gather herself. I also was treated poorly by the changing room attendant. After trying on a pair of pants, I put them on the table like I was suppose to do. She asked very ugly "What you don't want these." She made me feel like I did something wrong.

Yelp
The branch of the national chain is conveniently located right off the Westbank Expressway in Gretna. Products: Sporting goods and outdoor gear. The prices can be steep, especially for new clothing items, but this is balanced out by end-of-season sales, so time your shopping wisely. Firearm ammunition was in short supply and highly rationed (particularly .22LR) over the past decade, but has stopped being an issue of late. Prices are competitive. (3 stars) Service: There always appears to be a horde of workers here, but like many other chain retailers, there is a dearth of cashiers available. They *will* call for another cashier to a lane if the line gets long, but that means they're being reactive, not proactive, and I do not take that philosophy in retail highly. Why bother with a greeter when people want to give you money?? (2 stars, generously) Facilities: A rather newish storefront, although the business has been here a while. The place is kept clean, and the interior recently went through a remodel. Parking is ample in the shared private lot. Overall, nice. (4 stars) Overall: An average business of this type which could excel with better manpower management. (3 stars)

Yelp
I'm A LA. STATE & N.R.A. Certified Firearms Instructor! Myself & another close friend went into the Academy located @ 91 Westbank Expy in Gretna, LA. We were looking at the men shirts, jogging pants, etc. As we were shopping a young lady cordially asked us if we needed help. Her assistance was above measure meaning, she was *Courteous, *Professional, *Pleasant, & *Knowledgeable. Her Character was *Polite, *Caring, & *She was concerned about our satisfaction of choosing everything we wanted! She really was *Undeniably Customer Serving & Top Notch Genuine! I had to ask her name. "Niyanna L. was her answer!!! :) Thanks Academy for having her in your employ! She is *A Great Representation of 1st Impressions!! Why? Because that was our 1st time in this store because we're from LaPlace, LA. & happen to be on that side of the river. We are usually visiting at least 2 others closer. Yelp
This Academy is pretty typical. It has all varieties of sporting goods. They have a huge shoe selection. They also have a good, reasonably priced ammunition selection. Handguns seemed overpriced. Rifles and shotguns have pretty standard prices. Depending on who is working, they may have to walk an ammunition purchase to the register for you. Academy also sells school uniforms, swing sets and bbq grills. Go during the week. Weekends get crowded.

Yelp
I was kind of surprised to discover that Academy is a Southern regional chain. They've only had a website for about a year or so; what retail establishment with over 100 locations doesn't have a website until 2010 (OK, maybe late 2009). Anyway, much of what I said about the Clearview location is duplicated for this one. I shop here for jeans, local sports themed items, random sporting goods equipment, ice chests, gifts, y'know that sort of thing. This store is pretty crammed with clothing, so much so that it's hard to make it through the aisles. The sizing of a lot of their brands is pretty random. I've purchased clothing with a spread of about 4 sizes. The sale racks do offer some deals. They have a LOT of shoes, but again are somewhat haphazardly organized. Although I do know that the cleats are usually in the back corner. This is my go to location for sports related gifts (how many Saints knick knacks exist anyway?) and jeans.

Yelp
Ever since this pandemic, employees are rude, they perform like they don't want to be there. If that's the case quit and find a new job. This is not the first time an employee has been rude at this location. Corporate needs to make some changes in this location. Until then, they have lost my business. And I will be more then willing to spread this.

Yelp
I shop here not that often, but this trip was cool.. The employee at the was pleasant, she greeted us upon walking in. The shopping was a short one, but I wasn't certain of where a particular item was, do I asked the employee. She assisted us and was pleasant on the process.. I found what I went needed, went to register , and checked out.. The cashiers was very pleasant... Thumbs up..

Yelp
This isn't a bad little place, if you happen to be on the Westbank and need some sports equipment. They sell everything that you could probably need, from football pads to golf clubs. My only complaint was that their "tailgate" selection of Saints and LSU shirts/jerseys etc was really kind of sad. There wasn't a big selection at all and there were a limited number of sizes. I don't know if it was just this particular location, or if I should be looking for game day gear at a specialty shop instead. I would go here if I need sports equipment, but for other stuff I would go elsewhere.

Yelp
So ever since this pandemic started I've Been scouring all the Academy Outlets all over the southeastern coast of LouisianA FOR gym equipment. I've been to Hammond Covington Lafayette (off 49) Gretna, Slidell, basically all over. I had to piece together a weight set. I got the Adidas Olympic Bench in Slidell. Cap 300 Lb set from Lafayette, I go get my smoking wood for my smoker from the Metairie location. I picked up dumbbells in Covington. Hex bar from Gretna. Speed bag from Hammond... ETC GRETNA HAD THE WORST SERVICE GRETNA WAS THE ONLY PLACE I HAD TO ACTUALLY GET OUT MY CAR AN GO IN BECAUSE THEY WERENT BRINGING THE STUFF TO THE CURBSIDE. I WAITED OVER 30 minutes EACH TIME BEFORE I HAD TO GET OUT AN GO IN THE STORE, ASK FOR MY ORDER AN WAIT FOR THEM TO GET IT. NOBODY IN THE STORE IS TENDING TO THE CURBSIDE Each order I made for curbside at the Gretna location, each time I was promised it'll be ready by 6 PM. I never got notified to the next day every-time I ordered my order because nobody is working over there. I've had to cancel 2 orders from Gretna just because they wouldn't pull my order A few days ago I picked up my Hex Bar I made a order after I made the hex bar order My hex bar was ready but the latter order wasn't Mind you this is a Day an 10 hours after Still No notification for my order I get to the store Get my hex bar Let them know I have another order that wasn't ready it was small One 12 lb dumbbell Asked if they could get it They told me I needed to wait on the "Email" Long story short The rude an incompetent managers made me cancel my order an I basically wasted my time They were not willing to do there job an get my order. My order was in stock because while I was in the store I was online on the website Don't go here The managers dont care. The fact that they'll hire people like this to control they're money an run there store an brand and represent them is very careless an wreckless.. They're ruining the brand. I've left academy several emails complaining with no reply. Just don't go. That's all I can say.

Yelp
In terms of proximity, this Academy is closer to Uptown residents though seemingly far away on the Westbank. The sales people have always been pleasant and helpful. No trouble with parking. The store is consistent with other store set-ups. Why is it just okay? Not everyone is a sports fanatic, so it'd be nice if there was an Academy-standard line of sports-related items for, oh say, a group of semi-inebriated adults to play cabbage ball (btw, cabbage balls are in unmarked boxes and priced at 17.99. Are cabbage balls that hot a commodity? Made in Costa Rica.), and they need a regular ol' bat. The bat options were seemingly unlimited but when I asked about just a regular ol' bat, the cheapest suggested was around $60... I know places like Walmart are good for these sort of things, but I needed that cabbage ball, and yes, Academy did have it at a premium. I'll definitely go back to this spot, but if you're looking for something on the cheaper side, maybe call ahead to find out pricing!

Yelp
Just about the same as any other Academy location.. Decent pricing on shoes, which is good since the kids keep tearing there's up. Pricing on ammunition during this recent panic buying has stayed pretty much the same. No major increases, maybe a couple of cents per round depending on what it is you are looking for. Gun prices have stayed pretty in line as well. Normal increases, like $10 to $20. They are not looking to gouge anyone like other retailers. The guys behind the gun counter don't always know what they are talking about, but you can't blame them. One day you may see an employee stocking swimwear and the next day he is behind the gun counter. Tons of camping, hunting and fishing gear available too. I find their pricing in line with other retailers, even online retailers, or even less than others. I've even priced some canoes and kayaks here. Some models were $100 to $200 cheaper than at other stores. Want Saints gear? They got it. Want Pelicans gear? They got it. Want LSU gear? They got it. Want Tulane gear? They got it... you just have to look hard to find it.

Yelp
This Academy is alright and usually has a good selection of items and sometimes has some nice surprises in their sale racks. They have gotten much better about stocking ammo and often seem to have more ammo than the other Academy locations in the GNO area other than the one at Elmwood. They also have a great fishing section and have some decent sales on many fishing items. They also sell hunting and fishing licenses so you can make sure you're legal before pursuing the sportsmen's paradise Louisiana offers.

Yelp
This store is one of my favorites to buy tennis shoes, clothes and gifts, I never had a problem with them why I'm giving 3 stars is because I need their attention with the new guidelines to wear a mask inside the store and 6 feet distance! I was 2 weeks ago there and the guy who sweep the carpet he is not covering his mouth and nose and he get so close to you when you trying the shoes so he is not respecting neither the 6 feet and he was coughing I really want say something to him but I decided bring the attention to customer service they told me they going to do something about it!, looks they forgot or this guy dont care because I came back last week and he is doing the same thing! And other thing: cashiers need to pay attention to tell customers respect the 6 feet in the line cause they don't, and now I hear a lot stories of people fighting when you say something to stay away from you but if the staff of the store say it they going to do it so pay attention on that please let's make a safe environment for your customers, thanks

Yelp
I've been going to this academy for a while, but had a great experience buying a weight bars and weights today. I walked in asking for the weight bar, thinking I'd have to buy everything individually, and was helped by Charlie who got one from the back inventory. He immediately keyed in on what I was trying to get and let me know about a sale on a bar and weight combo set, and even returned to the back to get the entire set(HEAVY). Checkout was quick, Charlie even helped me load the set in my truck. Very great experience.

Yelp
This store has everything. They always have great prices and I love going there in the off season to get all my upcoming sports gear. They always have Saints/LSU shirts on sale. Got to love their $5 chairs, where everywhere else they are so expensive!

Yelp
Academy is my go to place. I love going here to shop or just to kill time when I'm bored. They have your every need from fishing, hunting, clothing, working out equipment, and sports related stuff. The staff is always friendly and helpful. They're a supporter of the Saints, LSU, and Tulane so you can find gear here.

Yelp
The Sport Authority or Dick Sporting Goods of Louisiana. A lot of Duck Commander paraphernalia. Friendly service. Decent pricing.

Yelp
I could live here! Being from California, we don't have a lot of cool sporting goods store.. This one was pretty cool.. Like better than Dick's but not as cool as Cabela's.. Great prices and selection

Yelp
Waited the longest I have ever waited in for a big box store, and there were only about 4 people in front of me. The guy in line 2 at 11:30 on july 1 so slow

Yelp
on Saturday, November 10, 2013. Had the worst service from a young girl named Olivia who was verbally rude and along with her rudeness and lack of customer service she kept giving dirty looks because she did not want to give us a refund for an item rung up wrong that I caught before signing my credit card. She refused even with the cashier next to her Alyssa had asked her to. Alyssa offered to get a superviser, which I was thankful for and she assisted. I asked Olivia to see her nametag (had hidden under a jacket) but she refused twice and told me "too bad if you do not believe my name is Olivia". I have four boys and that day we spend well over a $100 on football clothes and shoes and I am a die hard customer with 4 boys who play sports all year round. My husband however will be returning his pair of shoes, who was also there with me as a witness along with 3 of my boys. However, they have to learn that being disrespectful is not helpful. I know for a fact, I will not ever stand in her line and if I even see her, I will walk out and start shopping at Dick's in Oakwood mall. The prices may be a little more but they have great customer service, which is worth it to me.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to shop. Buy almost everything I might need here, clothes, shoes, hunting, fishing, camping etc. Clean, friendly store with generally great employees and managers. Good, central area location with very good inventory and quality products. Good return policies, easy to do business with.

Frigid A.

Yelp
Went for boxing headgear. Everything was misplaced, didn't get any help, the employee tried to sell me something else instead of help me find the right headgear.

Liz S.

Yelp
I came here a few months ago to purchase a new paid of running shoes. Although the store has a lot of athletic wear options, they don't have many sneaker options as other stores have visited. When I asked an associate about two different pairs of sneakers I choose out, she said "well do you wanna look cute or do you wanna be comfortable?" I am not sure why she thought that question was appropriate. Especially when I asked her "which is best for running?" To make my visit worse, I heard 2 employees loudly complaining about how customers don't put away the sneakers they try on. But isn't that your job? To return merchandise to where it belongs? Last time I checked, you don't get to complain on the clock. Even though I am in need of more workout gear, I will not be returning. I refuse to contribute to a store where employees think it's okay to be rude to the customers.

Bre J.

Yelp
Way better than the academy in HARAHAN. Never go there. HORRIBLE SERVICE. A+ to this academy
