I was actually researching where to eat in Hilo when I decided to test out the "best restaurants" near to me in Kahului so I could get an idea of how truthful the search was. That's how I found this lunch-only spot. And with a 5-star average, it was worth a try. ATMOSPHERE: They're located in the former Broke Da Mouth space. It's small and simple with total seating for 12 inside, with two unprotected communal picnic tables outside. MENU: Tacos, burritos, tortas, Mexican plates, local plate lunches. They no longer offer the "crazy fries" as the current owner took over the place from his brother, but offers an off-the-menu "crazy nachos" in its place. The menu is customizable, so just ask. FOOD: Steak Burrito The meat was tender with a good natural flavor though not very plentiful, and filled with pinto beans, jalapenos, tomatoes, raw onions, and rice which I got on the side. The overall flavor of the burrito was quite bland, regardless of the chipotle aioli inside which I couldn't detect. Luckily I had salsa at home to wake it from its sleep. Good portion size. Crazy Nachos This was not listed on their menu but the owner/chef suggested it as I was inquiring on a dish they no longer offer which was the "crazy fries". It was basically traditional nachos with a topping of your choice in which we chose pork. The pork cubes were super tender but very subtle in the flavor department. The guacamole was really tasty and creamy. But that's where the joy ended. It wasn't as cheesy as I had hoped for, lacked sour cream, and ended up being just vapid. SERVICE: The chef/owner was very welcoming and engaging, explaining in detail the menu and preparation. Food preparation was a quick in under 10 minutes. OVERALL: Absolutely fresh but the dishes need flavor infusion. Great service.

The tacos are delicious and absolutely fresh. The chips, salsa, and guacamole were also really great. The service is fast too which is a plus.

Google
Great little spot, food is delicious but it’s located on a busy street. We ordered tacos and guacamole + salsa. There’s seating outside only.

Loved loved loved the food Service was amazing most definitely a must!!!

Google
Easy place to grab a quick bite, with outdoor seating. I ordered two Pork Carnitas tacos with beans and rice. The food lives up to the name, the beans and rice reminded me of Hawaii more than Mexico with their taste and texture. The tacos were very filling, meat cooked exactly how you want it with a few crispy parts, the aioli is so flavorful, they give a salsa that is perfect for the cabbage onion and cilantro topping. Very good.

Google
Fun ‘hole in the wall’ authentic, delicious and unique experience with amazingly friendly service. I really enjoy finding out of the way places to eat, made to order, real food from owners and employees who really enjoy what they do. I went alone and ordered Ceviche. It was delicious, fresh and beautifully done. There are a few tables inside but more outside. Not even close to fine dining BUT we’ll worth trying for the fun ambience. I loved watching the enthusiasm and genuine care given to every customer coming through the door, even the delivery of your food and checking back to make sure everything is okay. I will definitely return and have already recommended to several friends! BYOB, no bathrooms, limited parking on the street.

Google
Our first stop in Maui after landing. The fish tacos, rice and beans and guacamole/chips were awesome. Fast, friendly service. We took burritos to go for later. Glad we skipped eating at the airports and waited for this. Five minute drive from the airport. Definitely recommend!

Google
Would highly recommend, Mexican and local cuisine. Family owned and operated, delicious, fast, near the airport and Costco. I had the carne asada and chili verde pork tacos, wife had veggie burrito and churro sundae. 🤤

Yelp
If you're looking for bold flavors with a local twist, Acevedo's Hawaicano Cafe is a must-try! This spot has quickly become one of my favorites, and let me tell you, their Crazy Nachos are everything. Loaded, flavorful, and perfect for sharing (or not, no judgment if you keep them all to yourself!). It's my go-to dish every time, and I still crave it after I leave. The menu is packed with creative combinations that blend Hawaiian and Mexican influences so well. You can really taste the freshness in each bite, and the portions are generous, too. Even though I haven't dined in, the food always arrives fresh, well-packed, and still hot, which says a lot. You can tell they put care into every order, and that kind of consistency makes me keep coming back Highly recommend especially those nachos!

Yelp
Did a quick stop doing errands on the area. It was late afternoon, so it was nice and cool sitting outdoors by the water (river?). Quick service, very tasty. Staff was not very friendly. Had the carne Asada plate to share. It was just perfect for 2 of us. Not sure though if there was MSG in the meal. We both felt bloated and super thirsty after the meal. Sadly, I'm not sure I'd be coming back here.

Yelp
First place we ate at in Maui. We were very hungry when we landed so looked something up quickly before heading for the hotel. Got tacos on the run, turned out those were the best mani mahi tacos we've had our entire weeklong stay! Juicy, soft and delicious. We've made it a point to try fish tacos at different places including the more popular ones on yelp, and these were still the best!

Yelp
Went here for our last meal on Maui, it was fantastic. Staff was very friendly, and outdoor seating area was clean. My group had a veggie quesadilla, pork chili verde tacos, and a carne asada burrito. Also got chips and salsa with guac, the tortilla chips are delicious! Quesadilla was hot and fresh and a pretty good size, pork tacos were loaded full and pork was great quality and flavor. Burrito was huge and fully packed, I wish I could bring this place back home!

Yelp
Food was good and service was friendly. Great Mexican food find on Maui. We loved their medium salsa sauce they provided - would have bought a bottle of that too, if they sold it!

Yelp
Got to fish and shrimp tacos and asked for spicy, and it was simply fiery and delicious!!

Yelp
Interesting take on a Hawaiian plate lunch, with Mexican influence Got the braised pork plate and the sautéed fish plate. Both were very tasty and big portions. The Mexican rice was ok - not my favorite. Mac salad was worth eating. The meat and fish were the best parts. Would come back if I wanted more of a Mexican flavor, but doesn't hit the spot for a straight up Hawaiian plate lunch

Yelp
The Food is so ʻono! We had the Carne Asada Burrito, Cali Burrito and the Pork Carnitas Taco. Guacamole was on point! Also great service and friendly staff. We are outside on the tables and enjoyed the music. We loved it!

Sophia H.

Yelp
Got the shrimp burrito and loved it, coming from someone who lives in orange county CA. Very friendly service as well.

Yelp
So grateful for this joint! We found this place when we visited Maui for the first time 7 years ago. Since then we never go back home without eating here at some point in our trip. The food is spectacular and their mango habanera sauce has a punch! The people here are always super hospitable and eager to help. If you don't want to wait, be sure to avoid prime lunch time

Yelp
Their Birria Tacos have to be my favorite item to get from them - they're perfect for snacking on and the consommé that came with it was also just as flavorful - a hidden gem in Kahului that I hope more people get to visit - Miguel Morales Photography

Yelp
Awesome Torta! I was very impressed with the great flavor. This was more food than I could eat in one sitting.

Yelp
The food was delicious! Really good chicken burrito, super unique and delicious spicy fishy dish, and great homemade chips. Wish they had more options for drinks, but the staff was nice and gave good suggestions

Arianne C.

Yelp
Food was SALTY, we didn't even half of the food we ordered and had to just get up and leave. Not worth the $ spent! Not worth trying this spot. Spend your money somewhere else that's worth it.

Yelp
Hidden gem that I've never tried all My life. Finally good Mexican on Maui. Will be back

David I.

Yelp
Easily the consistently best Mexican food on Maui. Burritos with sour cream & avocado spectacular, as is the Campechana(seafood ceviche). Call ahead for world class takeout, or eat outdoors there. World class.

Yelp
This place I would give 100 stars if I could. Friendly service everything made fresh and u can taste it. Probably my favorite quick stop in kahului alone.

Em S.

Yelp
Food was SOOO GOOD! Finally a good authentic Mexican food place, and not Americanized Mexican food! Service was great and plenty of seating! Will be back for sure!

Yelp
Great flavor. Friendly service. Love this place. Just wish there was more indoor seating on a windy day

Yelp
Exceptional customer service and food. I love the Asada plate. Very authentic and delicious

Yelp
Seriously the best meal I had the whole entire time on the Island. I was in Hawaii for 5 days and right when we were heading back to the airport to go home we stumbled upon this place. What a shame because if I would have known about this place earlier I would literally come every single day. We ordered the chips and guacamole, chicken taco and shrimp plate. Right when I saw the guacamole I just knew that it would be so incredible and let me tell you it was. So fresh. So full of color the avocado, perfect amount of salt and just so damn good. When I got the tacos I was a little hesitant because the chicken didn't look good but holy moly these tacos were so effing good I wish I would have ordered more. The sauce and salsa was soooo freaking amazing. I also had the rice and beans and they were really good. Everything here was so so so gooooood!! My only complaint the FLIES! Ahhhh seating is outdoors and flies ere flying everywhere it was so freaking annoying having to swat them away and not being able to enjoy your meal. Wish they had something to prevent the flies. I would come back in a heart beat and if anyone is near the airport YOU MUST COME HERE. ABSOLUTE HIDDEN GEM!!!!!

Yelp
The food here is SO good & the customer service is outstanding. Such a great hidden gem. Highly, highly recommend supporting this business!

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch after arriving on Maui and before heading to the other side of the island. We were all hungry and this place did not disappoint! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The food was delicious! I got the fish tacos and could have eaten an entire bowl of just the fish. The tortillas were fresh and made perfectly. The guys got burritos and said they would have some now and some later....well later isn't happening because they both devoured their burritos. The guac was great. Everything was a great start to our vacation!
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Love the ohana here and the love they put into their food! Been twice so far and it's been the best Mexican so far on island! Burritos are huge and stuffed with the perfect ratio of ingredients. My husband was pretty jealous when he saw mine and definitely had more than a few bites! The lengua tacos are my favorite also! The campechana is my husbands favorite!
google avatar

Amanda V.

Yelp
This eatery is pretty close to the airport, which makes for a great place to get a filling lunch after your flight. My husband and I were initially intrigued by the Hawaiian Mexican fusion, but we only saw Mexican food advertised outdoors before ordering. That's not to say that there isn't Hawaiian food here. It just was easy to forget that when the options outside were all Mexican. Not a big deal, but good to know. We got burritos. My husband chose chicken as his meat and I opted for vegetarian. There was no discount for vegetarian (ie more veggies instead of meat). Furthermore, the variety of vegetables was limited. I've had more flavorful veggie burritos elsewhere. Overall, food was good, but would be enhanced with a greater diversity of FRESH salsas. It would also be nice to see more tortilla options. Service was pretty good. Would be open to returning, but trying something else.

Yelp
I was actually insanely surprised..coming from SoCal finding any type of DECENT mexican food when I travel has been a struggle, but this place exceeded my expectations and I am so happy for that..Acevedos is a hidden gem, I had the fish burrito, and carne asada plate both were better than 80% of what I have had in Orange County, the service was awesome, and location is perfect will definitely be back!

Miles M.

Yelp
Ordered chips and salsa and tacos. Chips were overcooked. Salsa had no flavor, even after I tried to add condiments at home. Tacos were meh...Would not order these again.

Yelp
Great little taqueria downtown in Kahului. Order inside and they deliver to you in a paper bag or takeout containers. Specials of beef cheeks and lengua tacos were nicely done, and a couple were just enough. Take it Togo or sit at one of their 4 picnic open air benches. Be careful, it gets windy. I asked if they had some heat and we received some flavorful habanero salsa that hit the spot. Parking is on the street in in a tight shared parking lot. It gets busy right around lunch time so you might want to call it in for a pick up.

Yareli C.

Yelp
We arrived here looking for a Mexican option, this place was very good. We ordered 7 different plates and we all liked each one of them. Portions are pretty big. We ate outside on a very windy day but still had a really good meal. The lady at the front desk was very nice and the food came out fairly quickly.

Yelp
Where Hawaii exceeds California Mexican food!! Feasted on fish, carne asada and chicken rancher tacos. Best bargain in Maui. All the right heat. Flavor... best ever. A few tables inside, benches outside. Nice host. Close to airport. Yum!!

Yelp
Better than average Mexican style food in central Kahului. Prices have definitely increased, with about $3 being added to many menu items. The Nachos plate is a meal and not an appetizer for $16. Sour cream, guacomole and a generous amount of chicken with the chicken selection. I had ordered the pork verde burrito at $16, and my hubby got the fish burrito at $18, including an upcharge for the fish. Fish choice is ordinary cod, but a good white fish for a burrito. With drinks and a small tip, our lunch was almost $70 (!). Handy advice: each burrito was the size of a chihuahua. Split them, if you are a couple We probably would have been (finacially) better off splitting one burrito and skipping the nachos. As it is, we left with enough leftovers for two more meal for each of us. Good food, but, due to the pricing, I'd only eat here again if I am in Kahului already, and I just won big in Vegas.

Sara Y.

Yelp
We stop here every time we arrive at Maui and it never disappoints! The service is friendly, and the food is outstanding! We tend to get tacos and guac, but everything looks yummy. Can't go wrong with this special local place.

Yelp
Came right before closing after volunteering at the MHS. We were very hungry and needed food asap, I usually don't go into establishments right before they close cause that's not my thing but considering our hunger we took a chance. They were still very nice, burritos were big, I had a shrimp burrito. The guacamole and salsa were really good and fresh. I'm not a big fan of refried beans that was in my burrito but if I come back I'll remind myself to leave the beans out.

Yelp
I loved Acevedos back when they first opened and still love their food today! I always get their crazy fries with no beans, their lengua and cheek tacos, and da cali burrito. Their hot sauce is spicy! But I love how spicy it is!! Their portions have gone a bit smaller, but that's understandable in today's economy, but the flavor is still there! I also noticed that they had extended their hours, so that's a plus! We had stopped by right after work, around 5:30PM, a bit worried they'd turn us down because they close at 6PM, but they took our order! The guy working in the front was pretty attentive and nice asking if everyone was doing okay and if we needed anything. Seating is outside by the road, so you're going to head a lot of cars and motorcycles passing by when you're eating and waiting. And because it's outside, it's most likely going to be windy and be careful of falling leaves and small twigs. Can't wait for another Acevedos food trip!

Yelp
The food was so amazing! Came from Honolulu..and this place is by far the most authentic and tasty! Needless to say we coming back not just for the food but for the amazing customer service! U guys are the bomb! Oahu got nothing on this place!

Yelp
Excellent food! We shared a huge burrito. Delicioso!! Sweet staff! Limited seating.

Yelp
This spot was recommended by my aunt and uncle who previously visited Maui as a nice spot to grab a bite before heading to the airport. My friends and I arrived right when Acevedos opened on a Monday morning, as we were looking to eat a quick lunch before dropping of our friend off for his flight home. The staff were very friendly and we quickly placed our orders. I have a smaller appetite, so I opted for the Keiki (kids) carne asada burrito. I'm glad I went for this size, because it ended up being comparable in size to a typical chipotle burrito. In terms of taste, the asada was pretty tender and decently flavorful. The tortilla felt a bit large to the ratio of filling in my opinion, but the taste was decent. I wasn't a huge fan of the salsa that accompanied the burrito as I'm more of a red salsa fan, but those who like jalapeños might enjoy it more. Overall, not sure if I'd go out of my way to return here, but if you need a quick bite, it's a convenient spot to visit!

Evan P.

Yelp
Fast service! Amazing staff! Hot and delicious food!!! They even soft fried my corn tortillas for me! If I could give Six stars I would!!

Yelp
I got the Garlic Shrimp. It was excellent. The food came out quick and the service was spot on. We sat outside and listened to MexicanoHawaiian music. Will go back again...and again, and...

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp so stopped by for a quick lunch... it was a little strange how early they closed down, but maybe it's the area? Either way, plenty of items on their menu but we decided to share Al pastor nachos, which were pretty decent considering how far away from the border this place is... lol They had cute little outside seating and their salsa was tasty... definitely would give it another shot to try a few other items
google avatar

Yelp
I haven't been to every restaurant on Maui. But this may very well be one of the best if not the best Hawaiian/Mexican restaurant anywhere. Portions are generous. The people are helpful and cheerful. The Chicken Ranchero Burrito with chips, salsa and guacamole were delicious and tasted fresh and nutritious. Topped it all off with a Diet Coke and a smile.
google avatar

Yelp
This family ran Mexican/hawaiian fusion restaurant is special!! You can taste the love in every bite! You feel like you're invited to their family party and they are sharing their culture and food with you!! It's a definite must have before or after the airport for anyone from out of town!
google avatar

JaNese B.

Yelp
The one thing I can say is the food was sooooooo fresh!!!! The guacamole was amazing!!!!! The rice was good too. My husband loved his burrito!

Rental N.

Yelp
I attended an event where they catered in Steak and Chicken Tacos from Acevedo's. I've never eaten at Acevedo's before but now I'll be a regular customer. The meat was cooked perfectly (not dry), the aioli was delicious and the sides they provided for the tacos were fresh and plentiful! Lastly, I'm a chip snob and theirs were light, crispy and fresh with just the right amount of salt. The salsa varieties provided were tasty as well! Best Mexican food on Maui I've had so far. Can't wait to try other menu items.

Yelp
Acevedos has become a regular in our rotation of take out dinner options these last few months. We've tried the burritos, tacos, quesadillas and keep coming back to these three dishes. The pork chile verde plate, chicken ranchero burrito and loaded crazy fries with lengua. It's super specific, but these three dishes have hit the right spot, so we're not going to mess with a good thing. Pork chile verde is their well seasoned and tender pork with cilantro, onions and chile verde sauce and comes with rice, beans and tortillas. It seems so simple, but is really flavorful and fresh. The chicken ranchero burrito has rice, chicken, creamy sauce and crunchy grilled veggies that balance flavor and texture. Last but not least, the crazy fries are loaded with pico de gallo, cilantro, onions, sour cream, guacamole, and your choice of meat and salsa. It's a meal in itself, but we usually all share it. Parking can be a little challenging depending on when you visit, but calling in and ordering a ahead makes it a quick stop to picking up dinner. I will try and take pictures of the burrito and fries on our next visit, but it's tough to remember sometimes when you know it's going to be delicious.
