"On the 300-acre Ackerman Family Farms, which has been family-run since 1909 and open to the public since 1999, I wandered a pumpkin patch that showcases more than 160 varieties of pumpkins, squash, and gourds — many of them heirloom eating varieties — enjoyed a corn maze and carriage rides, and saw the educational tours that bring thousands of schoolchildren to learn about the art and history of pumpkin patches; this year the farm expects more than 30,000 pumpkins to be picked by hand and more than 10,000 guests.
